I had an appointment with Noemi to do some partial color to my hair - but first thing was first - get the tape-in extensions I had out of my head. I met Kelly ( the hair extension specialist) and she educated me on the type of hair extensions she uses on her clients and I was able to hold them to see the different lengths as well as to feel the quality of the hair in my hands. Kelly is super knowledgeable about the extensions she uses as well as the process to place them in a client's head which was very assuring as hair extensions are a pricey investment - but Kelly has me excited for what is to come. And a huge huge thank you to Noemi, Kelly and the really nice girl who is the greeter for all helping me get out my tape-in extensions. (it was a long 30-45 minute process getting those puppies out). My hair is super fragile still from the tape-ins which was not my best choice - but I feel really educated about my next steps in the hair world as I will be getting extensions in the fall with Kelly. Noemi gave me a hydration mask for my hair due to my hair being very fine normally and now fragile after the extensions we hydrated my locks then placed a nice silver-lilac tone on them. It reminds me of the days I had grey-lavender hair which was a great time. I cannot wait to see Noemi in a few weeks to revamp my locks to a lovely new shade and continue planning for my extensions with Kelly. read more

Spoke & Weal is a rare place where I know I'll be getting quality hair care in any city they're located. I'm from LA but am visiting Chicago for a while so I decided to trust my hair with Spoke & Weal Chicago. I'm so happy with my decision because Annie listened to my wants and needs with my hair (I'm a model so it's a tad bit specific) and cut it better than I had ever imagined. My biggest hair complaint is that with my hair being in between straight and wavy, I tend to wave it with a hot tool more than keep it straight BUT I want a cut that would work both ways so days that I'm feeling lazy, having it straight wouldn't scare me. She told me exactly how she was going to help me achieve my hair goals and kept me feeling confident and comfortable the entire appointment. At the end, she straightened it to show me what it will look like on my lazy days, then added some waves to show me the other way. She gave me best of both worlds and I am so happy! Also, she's very funny and has a great personality. I recommend her 100%! read more

I saw Annie for a free first-time client haircut. My hair is thin and fine, so very unforgiving if cut poorly. I was extremely specific in saying that I didn't want the long layers around my face to be cut. I was trying to grow them out. So what did she do? Without telling me, Annie gave me curtain bangs. And let me tell you--it looked absolutely awful. It wasn't what I wanted or asked for at all. I didn't notice when I left the salon, because Annie had curled my hair and it kinda camouflaged the bangs. But every single day for the past four months I've had to look in the mirror and hate my hair. It still looks bad after months of trying to grow it back out. I had heard so many people rave about Annie, but it's clear that she does what she wants, instead of listening to the client. Never again will I trust someone with my hair who only has 3 years of experience. Smh. read more

I have absolutely loved everything about my experience with Jackson at Spoke & Weal! It is not only a BEAUTIFUL salon but it has been the best experience I've had getting my hair done!!! They have such a good team at this salon and you can tell they all really care about their work and their clients. Jackson is an extremely talented color and hair artist, super friendly and easy to talk to, and I have never been unhappy with the result of my hair! Y'all. If you have room in your budget, GO HERE. I won't beat around the bush - this place isn't cheap. However, it's well worth the money for (1) the experience and (2) the haircut. They make you change out of your top into one of their t-shirts... which may literally be the most comfortable shirt I've ever worn. You get your scalp and neck massaged with fragrant oils while you sip high quality tea or coffee. I went to Amanda Price, a master stylist and educator at Spoke & Weal. Having a pixie, I always look for a stylist who either has a pixie or works with short hair... and Amanda did not disappoint! She is not only the bomb professionally but also interpersonally. I love meeting other Northern California transplants in Chicago :) One other thing: I have a pet peeve with stylists who try to upsell products I don't need. Amanda was totally candid about which products were/weren't worth considering. She even told me to hold off with purchases until I'd tested out some others/used up my own supply. I came here for my first appointment and let me say I am BLOWN away. Demi did my color and Amanda did my cut. Through the whole process they were helpful and informative. Great salon overall and not pretentious in the least. Felt taken care of the entire time. I came in with some less than ideal highlights from somewhere else and Demi worked her magic into THIS. Amanda knee how to work with my long hair and made it look sooo healthy with movement. And I think the pictures say it all. Stunning work. I will be back again and again. read more

Top notch salon. It's so minimalistic and pleasant inside, which makes appointments relaxing. The staff is at the absolute top of their game. I go to Alex for color, and Sam for cuts. Alex is the only person in the city that I know will get my hair exactly as I picture it in my mind, and if it fades too quickly or something goes awry, will touch it up or fix it for free. She's fantastic. Sam did a great job evening out my length and saving my long hair without taking too much off. The ends were dry and I was so afraid I'd have to lose a lot of it, but he was able to provide long layers to remove the dry areas and keep my hair long and beautiful! Hands down I would highly recommend them. They don't recommend any services you don't need and are honest about how often you need to come in (for me, it's every 6 months!) read more

I love love love my hair!!! I saw Demi for my color. I was looking for a change but not too dramatic and she delivered! Everyone noticed my new hair color but I still felt like me. My cut was amazing as well! Sam is like an artist creating a sculpture. So detailed and precise! My cut is modern and easy to style! I prebooked and can't wait for my next service! I even booked a blowdry with Sam just because I loved how he styled it so much! The salon is really nice open and simple. Parking was very easy and free if you walk a little which is nice for the city. Plus it carries Aveda which I am a huge fan of so that was a plus! My first time in Chicago and my friend told me she had a complimentary card for a haircut so I couldn't say no. I went in for a cut with Samuel, when he sat me down, he was so honest and offered his expertise, I immediately knew I was in good hands. Even though I went in for a cut, he suggested maybe some color on my hair. I wasn't opposed to it because I was trying to grow out my ugly yellow blonde to my natural brown. He hooked me up with Demi who was absolutely amazing. She suggested to take me to my natural brown and I was all for it. The cut and color I received from both Samuel and Demi was what I've been looking for for the past 7 months. I honestly might have to fly back to Chicago just to get the great service again!! Sam & Demi are my hair fairies ‍ I have been coming here since they opened about 4-5 years ago, and I am consistently happy. They are so talented, artful, kind, knowledgeable, and personable. Their assistants are always amazing. I really can't recommend them enough. I am lucky to have healthy hair, but I also recommend Sam & Demi to anyone who is looking to get their hair "back on track" after damage. It's worth every penny to have your hair taken care of right. Wonderful people. Plus I love that the salon has a chill vibe :) read more

This is an amazing, excellent and absolutely perfect salon if you're the type of person who likes to be seriously overcharged for subpar hair treatment performed by rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional stylists. Allow me to share a cautionary tale. Not being from the Chicago area I was not well versed in the local prices for salon treatments. I wanted to get tape in extensions. I was shocked at the $700 quote as I only wanted one package of extensions and just to add some fullness. For comparison sake, I have since conferred with several other local hair salons quoting me $300 max including new hair. Spoke and Weal also charged me $170 for a trim. They also charged my husband, yes a MAN for a men's haircut, $170. Here is where it gets really good. The hairstylist Amanda was fine. Unfortunately, the person I had to deal with the most was Demi. I have never in my life been treated in such an offensive and childish manner. The last time I went to the salon, my extensions were nearly coming out in fact one of the tapes had come apart a few weeks prior. Because they did not tell me if one came out to immediately come in, I just went ahead and stuck it back on. When I mentioned this to Demi she reacted in such a disgusted manner as though I had told her I had dipped my head in bleach. She told me I in no way shape or form could take them out and put them back in. Again, no one had said anything of this nature to me when got them put in and subsequently all the other stylists I have shared this with just laughed and looked perplexed by her reaction. When I came in for my extension touch up I asked if I could blow dry my own hair. I have very very curly and complicated hair. Last time Amanda used a flat paddle brush and basically brushed out aka frizzed the heck out of my hair to dry it. Anyone who has curly hair knows that is not the way to go. They were amenable to this arrangement, bringing me brushes and clips and what not. When Demi came by to put the extensions in she started putting them in wherever. I asked if she could adjust the placement of one and she got snippy and snidely told me she knew exactly where they had been because she spent 5 seconds 40 minutes ago taking them out. I am sorry, I have had these in my hair for almost 2 months, I assure you I know where they where and regardless, I am the client paying ludicrous amounts of money, do I have no say in the matter? She then got all up in a tizzy acting flustered. Saying that they have a whole process and by me blow drying my hair I had thrown everything off. I profusely apologized, explained again that they could do whatever they needed to do to my hair to prep it all I had asked for was to be able to dry it the way I like it done. It did not get any better, Demi continued to have an attitude much she like she did the first time I had come in. I did not feel good upon leaving but because of covid I was nervous to try somewhere else. A few weeks go by and I tried to call to schedule another touch up. I called twice and no one answered which I thought was strange. Then I get a call from Demi. She claims they sent me an email (which I never got, checked junk etc) basically saying they cannot work with me. She felt that I was not letting her shine as a hair expert and acting like I know more than her. THE PHONE CALL LEFT ME IN TEARS, A STYLIST MADE ME CRY FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON!!!!! I was devastated and unbelievably hurt. I cannot make heads or tails as to why she behaved the way she did or why she felt I "wasn't a good fit," regardless this is not how you treat clientele. Shame on you and your disgusting, despicable, reprehensible behavior Demi. Know better, do better. I am much happier with the other salons I found. read more

I came in last week for a color appointment with her hoping to make an future appointment for a hair cut. I had my hair cut six weeks prior at a place closer to my apartment and it didn't feel quite right. Simay was able to step in that same night and stay late to cut my hair. Disclaimer: I went in as a hair model, so I knew there were risks. I had an appointment with James and it started off really well. We talked about what I wanted to do with my hair (I walked in with a medium brown in my hair and a bayalage that was a little over 6 months old). I wanted to go a coppery red, but I knew it would possibly take more than one session. He started on my hair and we chatted and all of that. Once he washed it out, he told me it wasn't as light as he had hoped, but still looked promising. When I was at the sink, I could tell something was up because they kept looking at my roots and applied what they called a "dimmer" to them. Then the blow dry process started and my roots were visibly lighter, about a half inch but still noticeable. I couldn't see it very clearly in the mirror, but I got home and saw that it was really noticeable and even more so in pictures. Again, I know there were risks being a "Hair model" but I've never walked out of a salon with a clear band in my hair. I texted James kindly to ask him for advice and wondering if I should get the roots darkened or what could be done so it blends better. The rest of my hair color is fine. I just cannot walk around with lighter roots and I'm going to have to get it fixed elsewhere. I felt disregarded having him not even reply to my message, since I wasn't asking for it to be fixed for free or anything, I just wanted some advice on how to get it fixed or what could be done. I would have even been willing to make an appointment there again to have them fix it and pay full price, but now I feel like because I was just a model my hair was disregarded. I'm afraid to even wash my hair for fear it will get even lighter. I will say the staff is super nice and the products they used smelled great. I just wish I had been regarded as a potential customer and my question had been answered. Letting me walk out of there like that wasn't cool. read more

Love this place! They have seriously amazing stylists here. Demi is my go-to for color. Siobhan is my go-to for cuts. And, honestly, I've never seen bad hair in here, so you really can't go wrong with any stylist choice. Everyone is very friendly. They definitely go the extra mile. Amazing shampooing experience (and comfortable too). And there's complimentary, little bonuses like neck and shoulder and hand massages. It's a clean and modern space. It's got a hip simplicity too it. And not only does my hair look great, it's such a great experience too. You never feel like anyone is too busy and you are never rushed. In sum, this is a stellar salon and you should get your hair done here. read more

I get my hair done here every few months. This salon is wonderful, and the employees are amazing! I'm a person who is very hesitant with my hair. I also have that whole odd feeling about cutting my hair. However, this place really changed my views on hair dye and hair cuts! I initially went here when they were in their opening process; my colorist is Demi and Sam is the person who cuts my hair. They've definitely restored my confidence in my hair! I am no longer afraid to get my hair cut. I will say if you have curly hair, I recommend you get your hair cut with Sam. My hair is kind of a mess and pretty curly. Sam appears to know his way around curly hair; I don't ever have the fear that when it cuts it that it will look like he's cut 3 inches off. My haircuts always end up looking great. I've gotten three haircuts in the last year, which is impressive, considering that prior to this I hadn't cut my hair in 4-5 YEARS. Since beginning to cut my hair, its gotten much more healthy and looks much better. Thank you Sam! I might be biased because I've know Demi for a while; however, I never let her do my hair until recently. Demi is straight up with you. She will tell you that it takes time for you to get the look you want; you can't just go in an magically have hair that looks a certain way. It takes time and multiple appointments, which I have done. I'm very satisfied with my hair. It never feels like it will break, as I typically tend to go lighter. I truly trust Demi to help me make decisions on what she thinks might look best. I always go with her suggestions. Other positives: 1.) Mini massage when you get in - man, I love these things. Legit. I always ask the person how awkward they feel giving a person a neck massage but they're always super nice about it, haha. 2.) Complimentary tea and water! Their tea is awesome! 3.) Everyone is extremely friendly - you'll never feel judged or gross in here. 4.) Everyone tries to chat with you. I know getting your hair done can be awkward, so it's nice that people are always chatting and getting to know you. 5.) Their shampoo smells awesome, haha. I will let you know that their prices are not cheap, but I promise you, it's worth it. My haircut runs $75 and my partial dye at $160. I don't even care, because of the care and love they put into my hair. Overall, I love this place. I truly think you should at least check it out! You will not regret it. read more

Originally I had a complimentary haircut with Amanda which was okay. Honestly there was nothing special about the haircut and it felt rushed because I didn't even get a massage that should've came with the haircut. I didn't even get asked if I wanted anything to drink. Also, I didn't really appreciate the upsell on products that she didn't even use on my hair either. But fast forward in time, one of the color stylists, Noemi, reached out to me and offered me a complimentary color service which I booked about 2 weeks in advance. She tells me the day before that because I received a complimentary cut prior I couldn't receive a complimentary color service. She made me cancel work and tried to sell me on a balayage. Why would I honestly go to your salon when you made me cancel work and you tell me the day before when you had plenty of time to tell me that you can't do my hair? Also, if this were the case you should've never contacted me in the first place. Unprofessional and honestly one of the worst salons in Chicago. Thanks to Noemi I don't think I'll ever come back here again because for the price of 250 dollars I think I can find someone else who can dye my hair better judging from her mediocre work on Instagram. read more

I really wish i could give this salon a better rating. I was very excited when i made my first appointment after an initial consultation with Siobhan and Tina. I thought i explained my hair concerns very clearly: i didn't like my highlighted blond hair turning yellowish, and emphasized a few times that i wanted "ashy cold blond" highlights with deeper (but still ashy blond) color at the roots. I made an appointment for the hair color followed by keratin treatment to smooth my frizzy hair. First, I should note a few good things about the salon (thus 2 stars and not 1). Great atmosphere, nice design, comfy chairs, complimentary beverages and neck massage on arrival. Unfortunately the rest was very disappointing. * Hair color: instead of ashy/cold blond my hair is now more yellow than it was before my visit. But, even more shocking, my roots were never touched up. I realized it only when i got back home because of dim and deceptive lighting in the salon. My roots (the half-inch grown part in my natural color) were left completely untreated - never happened to me before, i remember clearly talking about deeper root color but this was not the case! I attached some photos of what my hair/roots looked like right after my visit in natural light. I do not think my "new color" can be described as cold or ashy or anything else we were talking about during my consultation. * Keratin Treatment: i would never do it if i knew what it involves (this was my first time doing keratin). My hair was sticky, smelled horrible and was impossible to comb through for 3 days when i was not supposed to wash it "to let the keratin stick to it". But on the day i finally washed it, my hair looked and felt exactly the same as it did before the treatment - and it does now (2 weeks later). It still has a strong chemical smell to it every time i wash it. No effect at all. The frizz is still there too. * Conclusion: wasted $650 (keratin+color) and almost 4 hours in the salon. However, what's much more frustrating is that my hair now looks worse than before i had it all done. Very disappointing and i wish i just kept my old color. Can't wait to have my color re-done (it's not recommended to color it for two weeks after smoothing) and can't wait for the keratin to wash out. read more

I wanted to love this place. It started off great with a kind greeting and a mini-massage from the girl at the front desk. My consultation with Simay also went well, she gave her honest opinion about what would be best and and I agreed so we ran with it- about six inches off plus addition of side bangs. My two-star review is essentially for the bangs. They are SO SHORT. Not only are they way too short to be side bangs, they're too short to even be regular bangs! It's been about two weeks since my haircut and every day since I've had to pin back the front of my hair since I literally can't do anything else until they grow out. Thank god for bobby pins and headbands but shouldn't a professional know better than to make such a rookie mistake? Very frustrating. read more

I have to admit, I was reluctant to come in here at first. I've heard horror stories about Aveda stores & locations similar in other areas. Luckily, I'm happy to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was very friendly. The hostess even offered me water or tea & gave me a shoulder massage while I waited for my stylist. Before he did anything, we talked about my desired look and he explained everything he was going to do and what products he was going to use and why. I felt very comfortable and safe, especially since he decided to trim my hair after blow drying it. See Samuel Cutz if you need any kind of haircut. He's the best! read more

THIS IS THE WORST HAIRCUT EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. And considering how many I've had (at top service salons) that's truly saying something. Things started off very smoothly. After having walked in off the street, I was offered a complimentary cut after waffling on the price (which is nothing to sneeze at). This was a pleasant surprise, and encouraged me to take a chance, which I did when I came back later that day. At this point I'd like to say I have natural (read: Black) hair. But MANY MANY white stylists have done it.*** I was warmly greeted by the receptionist, then seated to be given a lovely aromatic neck massage. Things were looking good. Until my stylist AMANDA PRICE came. AMANDA was unfriendly right off the bat, as if "we had had a conversation before". Very pushy ("Can I ask why you left your previous stylist?" What does THAT have to do with anything?!), arrogant, and most of all, condescending (after I asked her to trim my ends a little, she said "Well, if it'll make you happy", as if I asked her to do a jig simultaneously). AMANDA said barely a word to me as she worked. Now personally, I'm not much always for banal salon chit chat, but it was clear when I tried to comment here and there about my hair and was met with stony silence that I was not in the company of someone who meant me any good. Or perhaps better put, I knew I was with someone who did not care for me, either as a client or as a fellow human being. And had no problem showing it. And here's the rub. While no one else I encountered there was anything other than professional (with the exception of another stylist Sam dropping hard-core profanities in the adjacent booth), AMANDA's attitude, coupled with what turned out to be (when I got home and looked at it, really looked at it, since I was offered neither the side or back view) a really crappy haircut (worth $125 somehow, regular price???!), I can only believe that: A) She's never, or very rarely, cut/touched/encountered a black person's hair, and that B) SHE DOESN'T LIKE BLACK PEOPLE. I can forgive A (for a comp cut, that is). But I cannot forgive B. For obvious reasons. But even A is unforgivable WHEN I WAS TOLD SHE'S A MASTER STYLIST. "Master" or "Master race"?! Master of what? Certainly not MY hair. It is truly baffling, maddening and exhausting to know that in the year 2019, I as a black woman cannot get even a decent haircut at a salon that tops out at $800 cuts. Are these people trained that potential black customers don't matter, just because we're're outside the "norm" of most north side salons? Which, not for nothing, is TOTALLY against the law. When I put on my coat to leave, instead of coming over to thank me (I still gave her the commensurate tip for her services), she instead stayed oddly glued to the hostess station and said "Goodbye" to me from afar, as in, "Don't come back now, you here?" I was not offered a card or a future appointment or cleanup. I was not shown any product. Just a relieved look that said "I hope nobody like you ever darkens our (my) door again." With that I was dismissed. I put my head up high and braved the brusque winter day that had promised to be like spring. But somehow I was not surprised by the weather. read more

I really loved my experience at the Los Angeles branch so when I moved it was easy to just schedule an appointment here. My first cut was fine, the stylist was super excited about teaching me curly hair techniques--not SUPER relevant to me since I have wavy/straight hair. My second time coming to this salon, I got really excited to go blonde. I probably shouldn't have chosen the cheapest option because despite having ample pictures, the highlights turned out very 90's streaky, which is not at all what I was going for. Colorist was very nice when I said towards the end of session that I wasn't completely satisfied with the color and we scheduled a time to correct it; however, I ended up going elsewhere because I wasn't super confident about it turning out the way I wanted (again). To her credit, she had her hands full with starting another appointment when the bleach was supposed to come out of my hair; maybe that had something to do with my dissatisfaction with coloring. All in all, this salon is okay. They have nice amenities like a massage with essential oils and REALLY fantastic tea, but I think there is better cuts and color for a more reasonable price out in Chicago. If you are really set on going here, it might be worth spending the big bucks and looking at the Instagrams of the colorists but keep in mind those will be their best work. read more

This salon is trendy and up to date with popular hairstyles. Amanda cut my hair and it looks amazing! The aesthetic is perfect, the music is great, and they also give you a neck and scalp massage before getting a shampoo rinse. This is definitely my new go-to place to get haircuts! Ask for Amanda Pierce if you're looking for someone that knows current hair cutting techniques and trends. read more

Found S&W via Salon Apprentice (if you are not familiar with this resource, i SO recommend looking into it for discounted hair/color/beauty services!), and was thrilled to get a slot for highlights on a Sunday afternoon. Salon Apprentice can be tough with busy schedules, so finding an appointment on the weekend is always a win. I digress. I have long blonde hair and have been coloring with highlights for what feels like forever. More specifically, ~14 or so years. My hair has gotten so light, and I want to get away from platinum blonde and more toward warm, honey tones. I ask for this every time I go to a salon for highlights...and every time I'm left disappointed with another platinum 'do. The old highlights take for-e-ver to grow out. UNTIL TODAY! Just got back from an appointment at S&W (saw Alicia, who was unfortunately just in town for a couple days but is based in Iowa), and omg. She is a hair magician. She understood exactly what I wanted. She explained the somewhat complex process she would follow to warm my hair up and get rid of the years old platinum blonde that was still lingering and growing out. The products were great, the salon itself is super cool and modern, but most importantly - Alicia was fabulous and made such a strong impression that I will definitely be going back even if she's not my stylist since she lives out of state. Left the salon LOVING my hair and with a couple new Aveda products to use at home. YAY! High recommend checking out this new northside salon! read more

I got an ombré/balayage color done by Demi and she killed it. I went through a couple pinned photos to demonstrate my desired look. Demi listens to you, make sure you two are on the exact same page, and it explains every step she is going to take in achieving your color. I then got finished with a cut by Sam who also did a fantastic job. Along in the process a complementary stress relief back massage and hand massage were given. Couldn't recommend Demi and Sam more! Came in yesterday for balayage and Demi was a dream to work with! I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she was very realistic with me - let me know I probably wont achieve that exact look today but definitely would over a couple sessions. The result was everything I wanted and more! Sam finished me off with the best haircut I've received in the last 5 years. Can't wait to be back - thank you Demi and Sam! read more

I went there yesterday for a straightening my hair I have very coarse hair and it was rushed and not what I expected none of the pictures on the website show anyone with curly hair so I should've figured I will not be returning I came out looking like a dog poodle hair straight and half curly. Also the stylist kept saying how damage my hair was not cool made me feel like crap read more

To say Demi changed my life might be an understatement. She may truly be a color wizard. She was able to achieve the color I had long wanted but never thought I could have. Demi transformed my dark brown, lifeless hair and was able to correct the uneven highlights I'd done before. I can honestly say I love my hair now due to her magic! Book now! No customer should be treated this way, especially after making an appointment. I would not recommend this salon to anyone who expects professionalism, respect, or fair treatment.
