I so wanted to like Sporty's because of it's whole "Where the locals eat" thing, but it was basically a dark dirty dive bar with a crappy neon mural and folding chairs that served breakfast. We were there for breakfast and I'm sober and don't like sports so all of that was a minus. My eggs and bacon breakfast was serviceable but unmemorable. My bacon was delectable and I was wondering if it was local. Extra big bonus points for been so generous with the coffee, that stuck out for me. Some of my family got these intimidatingly enormous pancakes that they didn't like much. If you like local diners and dive bars you'll love it. read more

First time here, waited an hour and a half for everything and we didn't even get everything we ordered. Red headed Server forgot a whole meal at our table after an 1 1/2 and we didn't get water until an hour in, we only got waters because the owner told someone else to get us waters. She forgot two drinks at our table and then gave excuses as well as I watched two other tables walk out on her bad service. Food was at least pretty good when it came out an hour and a half later, but not so good I'd wait an hour and a half again. If you see this server run you won't be served well at all and she will feed you excuses lol read more

Sporty's is the kind of place for the 45% of the island's population that is unapologetically uninterested in eating ramps. Which is reassuring and unpretentious-and I like that, if that wasn't clear. Consistent greasy-spoon style food in an informal and quiet(unless you're here during a game) place that attracts a lot of old timers and families. I come in primarily for a quick breakfast and lunch so I can't comment on the nightlife. But if the flyers on the wall are any indication, there is a nightlife. So maybe check it out if you are interested in seeing another dimension to island life? I'm not a bar person usually but if you are-go for it! read more

Breakfast two days in a row. Call me a slow learner. Day 1, the place was almost empty but the lone server could not have been less interested in offering decent service. She spent most of the time we were there hiding out. A real expert at avoiding any potential eye contact. Husband ordered a scramble, which was delivered as a heap of glop. I ordered the chicken fried steak with home fries and a biscuit. The potatoes were rock hard and needed at least twenty minutes more time on heat. The biscuits were served split, with the inside cut surfaces "grilled." The grilled surfaces were as crisp and black as charcoal. We were so stunned at being served obviously burned failed food that the waitress offered to "make" and bring replacement biscuits. We said "yes, please." Twenty minutes later she brought us ONE cold ungrilled biscuit. Yuck. Day two: husband preferred to skip breakfast when we couldn't locate an alternative spot within walking distance of our Airbnb (Hardware Store had not opened yet). I took a shot, figuring I had learned how to order my way around the problems of the previous day. I ordered sausage and biscuit with gravy. I left 3 minutes after my food finally arrived. Gravy was flavorless glop. Biscuit was under-baked and still just raw dough in the middle. Sausage tasted off. Well here i return about 6 monthes later to see if they might have changed there ways of doing things. Well my last time I was on here I complained that they don't ever and I mean ever answer there phone. But today I got to say they did. At 843pm I called and they answered the phone, I tried to order a k-2 burger and the lady on the phone says to me and I quote "um yeah its going to take an hour to an hour and a half to get you that burger, I'm the only one here. I am the waiter, the cook, the dishwasher and the bartender, so if I can get to it it won't be for a very long time" to make a fucking hamburger. I'm calling a place where thats what they do they make food for people. Even at the most busiest place ever , I've never seen it where a restaurant ( that cooks food) takes them an hour to an hour and a half to make a 5 minute burger. I drove down there and I saw that there was no one sitting at a table in the restaurant area. And there were 5 people sitting at the bar and the so called waitress, cook, dishwasher, bartender, ect was leaned over the bar with her hand under her chin and elbow on the bar talking to the people at the bar. Not running around doing the dishes, making food, serving drinks or taking orders. She was socializing, laughing with the drunks at the bar. So I waited there for a few minutes watching her do just about nothing. She could have had my burger darn near done. FUCKING SERVICE ANYMORE SUCKS, HARD TO EVER GO BACK. Breakfast came highly recommended by the manager of the inn we stayed at and we were not disappointed. Big working class breakfast done right. Mostly regulars and local folk hang out here, and to be honest that's where I'm trying to eat! There is no pretense here. Has a bit of a truck stop / diner feel to it. Okay, my mother-in-law simply loves this place for breakfast. Something about her childhood in Northern Idaho. Unpretentious, generous portions, relatively tidy, now (gratefully) smoke-free. Personally, I'm not a fan of big TV screens on the walls, but this place is primarily bar, so not out of the realm. In a nutshell: If you have a mom-in-law from a small logging town, this is where she'll want to go for bottomless coffee and a short stack. Love the chicken fried steak. It's ALWAYS delicious. Unfortunately the hash browns always disappoint. They're cooked in a thick pile so only a bit are crisp and browned and the bulk are flavorless warm potato shavings. If they're busy, expect them to be short staffed, but they will take care of you eventually. Your typical diner, with pretty good food. I had the fish platter, which had an amazing amount of seafood for the pricetag. I didn't touch the fries, they weren't all that great, but the fried seafood was all delicious and fresh. In fact the fried oysters were probably some of the best I've ever had. I like this place because it's totally unpretentious and you never see yuppies there. You can get an awesome diner breakfast there, but you might want to bring your own coffee. Sportys lives up to its reputation as the locals hang out. If your from off island this is a great place to get a slice of the island life as seen through the eyes of its locals. Overalls and dirty mucks are the attire and in most days its patrons filter in to catch up on gossip and watch sports on the big screens. The food is good. It's all made from scratch by the Croatian owners. Things generally don't come out of a can and it shows. Breakfast is by far my favorite. Nothing fancy, but everything is well seasoned and consistent. Biscuits and gravy are good as is the hash. If your looking for a good no frills meal on Vashon don't pass this up read more

Great dive bar/restaurant! We visited the island to celebrate the 4th with friends and arrived early and hungry. Sporty's in the middle of town was the "happening" spot! TVs showing games, car races etc. Service was friendly and prompt! I had eggs and corned beef hash with a single pancake. My wife had a cheeseburger which she liked. Mine was prepared exactly as requested and I was amazed at the size of the pancake which was served on a oval shaped steak platter with pancake covering the entire plate with 3" hanging over the edge all around! The portions were huge and prepared well. The prices were reasonable and it was a full house at 10:30 am. Give it a try if you are ever on Vashon, you won't regret it! read more

It loses two star recently because the service is wavering steadily. the last three times I have been there the waitress has forgotten parts of our order. Once with just two people, once with five, once with three...so I don't think it has a lot to do with a bunch of orders. I can't give a place a good review if they don't feed me or apologize for their mistakes. What made it a fun spot kind of went bipolar- the "at your own pace" dining I had when the place was near empty was reversed to " At MY own pace" by the waitress, and saw no other signs of speediness from the other two employee's. read more

The inside is definitely a run down bar, with the typical local crowd. It's definitely a "hole in the wall" type establishment. However, our waitress/bartender was very kind, and was timely in everything. My boyfriend and I split a Ruben sandwich w/ fries, and ordered a side of potato salad as well. The potato salad was not bad, and the Ruben was good. The corned beef was not fatty at all, though my boyfriend did not think the sauerkraut was all that strong ( I didn't see anything wrong with it). It was decently priced as well. Sporty's is as good as it is bad. I'm giving it an extra star because I've only eaten breakfast here, and I hear such good things about their lunch. The pros? Open early, no hipsters, polite waitress, lots of space. Their biggest fumble is their hash browns and coffee. I eat here every month or so, because I get desperate for breakfast on Vashon. The hash browns are always blackened on the bottom and swollen with what I believe is butter flavored Crisco. Their coffee tastes terrible compared to other restaurants, but it's not any different from Diner coffee. A good fix for it is cream and plenty of sugar to cover up the taste. Their food is standard, divey food. I almost always order the french toast since I'm not too fond of their eggs either (usually too wet or too dry). It's too bad they don't have any maple syrup, I might come more often if I know exactly what I'm pouring generously over my french toast. I've tried their omelets before and wasn't impressed, eggs too dry, too much oil and too much cheese, not enough vegetables. I'll probably still stop here once in a while, because there's really no other choice if you want to stay on Vashon. But if you don't, just wait about an hour and go to any of the diners on the mainland, you're not missing much. read more

This little divey sports bar delivers a great breakfast. My hubby and I each got a pancake with two eggs and bacon or sausage. For less than $6 each! AND THE PANCAKES WERE THE SIZE OF A PLATE! HUGE! And the pancakes were really well cooked and fresh...light and airy. Everything was hot and fresh and eggs perfectly cooked over-medium. Wasnt planning on leaving a review but after this morning I had to. The steak I got was extremely chewy, taking me a couple minutes to get through a piece. Fries were mediocre. Salad was the best part. Garlic bread was burnt, but not that bad. What prompted me to leave a review, however, is me waking up at 2 am this morning, and having diarrhea as well as vomiting all morning long. I have lived on Vashon for 25 years and have enjoyed Sporty's for all those years. Famous island-wide for their breakfasts. They serve equally good bar food for lunch and dinner. Surprisingly good basic hamburgers. And most importantly fries are well done - crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Prices are very reasonable and they give generous portions - no tiny architecturally designed tasteless food here. One of the few restaurants on the island that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. And LOVE the fun when an island newbie orders the Tall Stack for breakfast. They have done a slight remodel so it doesn't smell like a dive bar but has not altered the hometown atmosphere. However, as the island gentrifies and becomes a bridge-less Bainbridge or Mercer this gem's days may be numbered. read more

Have you seen the kitchen ?? Food is absolutely terrible, staff are insolent and the owners could not care less about customer service- they are all about taking your money. We went there for breakfast, since we had been told it was great- well it was not. I would never eat there again, and have spoken with people who tell me how bad the kitchen is--- before you go, ask to see the kitchen, and then decide..... it was my worst breakfast ever, and vow to eat over the road next time. We had breakfast and I had eggs Benedict and my friend had hash and taters breakfast. The portions were huge and we could not eat them. Hot and well made. Hash was excellent. Eggs Benedict were cooked perfectly and lots of sauce. Service was spot on and very helpful. Highly recommend if you want to go to a place that the locals hang out....nothing fancy but local food. Big screen tv so you can watch games but not too loud. Want a huge well made breakfast...Here is the place...just good ole fashioned diner type of food. I have eaten here several times and each time the food and service is consistent . If you want fancy or high end food, do not go here...if you want diner fare, then go here...I have not had lunch or dinner but only the breakfast...lots of food at a good price and nothing fancy, just a diner type but good...recommend for everyone. read more
