The staff were extremely kind and helpful when we told them we were vegan and even let us try the two options before we selected their dairy-free peppermint patty. This is my first time to the Richmond shop. Took the kids up to DC many years ago to try out the one there before it came to Richmond and remember really liking the brown butter almond brittle. The Richmond shop is bright and airy and the service is very friendly. I like how they're very open to giving you samples and not making you feel bad about it. At least on my trip. My family and I ordered the salted peanut with chocolate flecks (which I thought was good but needed more chocolate), Texas sheet cake (which I think is the dairy free version of the chocolate blackout cake. I didn't realize it was dairy free so I picked it thinking you could taste the chocolate more but I think most of us preferred the chocolate blackout cake) green mint chip (which was very good and my daughter smartly combine this with the chocolate blackout cake. Salted peanut butter would've been good with the CBC as well ) and double dough which was pretty awesome. I'm actually normally not a cookie dough ice cream fan because I prefer the cookie but I thought this was done very well. My only disappointment was that they did not have any kind of coffee flavor, which is my go to for most ice cream stores besides the classic chocolate, peanut butter and mint chip. I absolutely love Jeni's. Before they even had a store in my location, I used to have it shipped to me. Here's the thing, I live well over an hour from the nearest jeni's and all of their cool flavors makes me want to drive up there often to try them. Especially since they don't offer those flavors at Whole Foods. The ONLY thing that sucks or is lacking is that there is NOWHERE for customers to sit or relax while eating their ice cream. It's actually weird because literally every other business in carytown has outdoor seating, even the smaller businesses next door have a table or two. But not Jeni's, which makes no sense. You have nowhere you sit and enjoy your ice cream. After driving over an hour, I'd like to sit and enjoy my ice cream. But oh well. The flavors are so fun tho. I have strawberry pretzel pie and watermelon taffy. I had originally come up there for the bubble gum, hoping that it reminded me of the nostalgic version of baskin robins, but it didn't. I tried all of the new summer flavors and they were pretty good. Toasted s'mores is probably what I'll get next time. The marshmallows in root beer threw it off for me. The employees are always friendly and welcome trying the flavors. They also take the time to describe the flavors as you're trying them. My favorites are the double dough and gooey butter cake. They're both on the sweeter side and decadent. I do wish they would label the menu with common allergens. The only way to tell without asking is by reading the descriptions on the little flavor cards on the display case, which you can't see until you're up to order. Let me begin by saying that they're opened until midnight unlike some of the places down the road. I love Carytown, but some places close too early. So if you're in the mood for ice-cream and it's late, they'll be open and they have parking right in front of their establishment. When you come in, the place is spacious, bright and they have lots of flavors to choose from. I decided to go with their 3 scoops that comes with a piece of waffle. I honestly don't remember which flavors I had, but what I do remember was that they all tasted amazing and I ate them all. Also, you can always ask for a taste test before committing to a flavor. I just sat in my car and enjoyed the ice-cream because they don't have a place to sit. I remember one time, I crossed the street and found a bench, but that's when I went in the daytime. Popped into Jeni's for the first time seeking an after dinner treat and was pleasantly surprised! The staff was very nice and walked us through the options, thoroughly explaining the half scoop offerings, which allows you to get multiple flavors without committing to a lot of ice cream The inside was very colorful albeit a bit small. They had multiple flavors available which felt very exciting and offered unlimited samples. I was excited to see that they offered dairy free options but there were only 2 offerings (Texas sheet cake and Lemon Bar). Compared to the 12 other flavors, I wish there was maybe 1 or 2 more dairy free options to really feel like I had more choice. I ended up getting a standard double half scoop of Texas sheet cake on a waffle cone which was absolutely delicious! It is a very decadent flavor, creamy and rich all of the things good ice cream should be. My partner also got a standard of cookie dough on a waffle cone and shared that it was also phenomenal. It did ring us up at just under 20 dollars for two cones which was quite pricy. Due to the lack of seating, I couldn't justify this being a consistent go to spot since it is both expensive and lacks being able to enjoy the ambience to support it. However, I think this is great once in a while treat spot if you're into the unique flavor offerings they have. Having tried a number of them, I can say that all the ice cream is well made and flavorful with selection relying on personal taste in the moment. On my last trip I went for a fruit-forward selection of 3 flavors: Sparkling Cherry Pie, Brambleberry Crisp, and Wildberry Lavender. As a berry fan I enjoyed each ice cream, however the texture wasn't my favorite as you could occasionally feel small ice crystals in the jams mixed into the ice cream. Three half scoops of ice cream will run you $7.95, which is a bit more expensive than other shops nearby but not so expensive that the treat didn't feel like a value. A waffle cone or bowl will add an additional $1.55. The waffle cones are a bit more salt forward than I like, so I'd likely avoid in the future. I sampled the salty Carmel, gooey butter cake, and coffee. I ended deciding on getting a standard which is two scoops of coffee and butter cake. I was definitely surprised and disappointed by the portion of that scoop, definitely small and expensive for what you get. Jeni's is more pricey than grocery stores brands, but it's not outrageous compared to other boutique options in the area. Their standard serving is two large scoops and a piece of freshly baked waffle crisp for about $7. They also offer ice cream flights of up to 10 flavors, waffle cones and bowls, pints, and 12-packs of half pints to go. The shop is very cute and the staff have always been really friendly. The space is bright and clean, there is party bunting on the ceiling, a jug of water for customers to help themselves, and a legible board with all their current flavors. This is Richmond's first Jeni's, and despite how often I travel to the DMV, I've yet to try Jeni's at one of their shops until now. I've tried their pints as sold at Whole Foods but never thought much of them. I think they're delicious; however, it was never a brand of ice cream I craved. My store experience wasn't too different than my Whole Foods experience. The ice cream tastes the same no matter where purchased. The advantage you have in the store is being able to sample the flavors before you buy and getting a waffle bowl/cone which are soooo oh oh oh fresh and tasty. Also, we tried the Pink Champ, described by Jeni's as "our first-ever sparkling beverage made specially to pair with ice cream. It's a flavor enhancer. Palate cleanser. And an all-around interesting drink Akin to a seltzer, less sweet than a soda, and with a refreshing tart edge, Pink Champ helps all the nuances of our flavors truly shine." I couldn't agree more with the description. It's definitely accurate. The tartness and lightness contrasts, balances, and well complements the ice cream. There was no indoor or outdoor seating, so we sat outside at a nearby restaurant on their patio. On the side of the Jeni's building (it's on the corner of Cary and Nansemond), there is a low wall you can probably fit around 3-4 people on and a city bench, but it's sad that Jeni's doesn't have at least one table outside or inside. The seasonal/temporary Brown Sugar Pop-Tart flavor was only available by the pint, so I took it home and tried it later. It tastes as awesome as it sounds! If you think the Brown Sugar Pop-Tart is one of the best flavors (which it IS ), you'll love the ice cream. The ice cream itself could've used more filling, but I think that's the case with all of Jeni's flavors (where applicable). read more

I am a Jeni's stan and have been for 7 or 8 years. I moved to Richmond about a year ago and was SO sad when I realized that they didn't have a Jeni's. So you can only imagine my excitement when I learned a location was opening here. Unfortunately. My first couple visits were not so great and on one of them, I ended up leaving without even getting anything. "Why?" you ask!? Well because they scoop small. And by small, I mean TINY. And i You're paying like $7 or $8 for ice cream, then being charged $1.50 on top of that for a waffle cone, just for the scoops to drop inside to the bottom. On what earth do you have to eat CONE first in order to get to the ice cream?? IDK, Maybe toddler scoops are a new company standard, but like I said - I've been a customer for years, and visited shops in different cities/states and *never* ever ever complained about scoops until RVA. They also don't have seating, or even a counter to stand at and the area of Cary Town where they're located doesn't have very many benches. On my most recent visit I ate my ice cream too fast to take pictures! One of my favorite things about Jeni's is their seasonal picks. This visit I got the white chocolate peppermint (peppermint bark) and the seven layer bar (reminiscent of Samoa). Both were delicious. Jeni's always feels like attest and there I never any pressure! I've had Jeni's before in DC, and I've been obsessed ever since. Once I saw Jenis open in Cary town, I ran and brought my sister and nephew. On a Sunday afternoon, it wasn't crowded at all. *Please take note that there isn't seating inside, and there is limited seating outside. They allow you to taste test the different flavors. I love the variety of gluten-free ice cream. I told the lady serving me I was gluten intolerant, and she still offered me a cone. I reminded her I couldn't have my ice cream in them due to the gluten. She stated she was "pretty sure" they were gf and double-checked her binder and realized they were vegan not gf. An honest mistake, but if I were someone who didn't know any better and got the cone, it could have been a more serious matter. My sister and nephew loved the ice cream but definitely a bit pricey. I've had Jeni's up in NOVA so I definitely wanted to check out their new branch in RVA. I went during their grand opening to get some free ice cream. I know it may not be the most representative of a typical customer's experience, but I wanted to highlight the ice cream flavors I got to try! The salted peanut butter with chocolate chunks is still my favorite because they do a great job balancing the sweet and savory flavors! The chocolate chunks are also a great addition as they aren't too sweet but balance out the nutty profile. The darkest chocolate was also pretty solid for me, but I can see how others might find it too bitter. The brown sugar almond brittle was another surprise for me! I loved how it tasted like almond milk (and almost like a traditional chinese almond dessert). The brown sugar/caramel swirls were a nice complement to the almond-y base flavor. I got my ice cream scoops in a waffle bowl and immediately recognized the subtle cinnamon flavors in their crispy waffle cones/bowls. You can just smell the buttery waffle flavors as soon as you walk in the store!! The opening event was much more organized that I had expected and staff were very friendly. Staff were pleasant to deal with, had positive attitudes and that the environment was just generally welcoming. The menu included a wide array of very eclectic flavors, most of which we had never tried before. I opted for a "Standard" two scoop cup, my flavors of choice were brown butter almond brittle and salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks. Fun place! I've been to the original location in Ohio years ago & always enjoyed it! They have a variety of fresh, sweet flavors, & I recommend them. They also have great promotions, so keep your eyes out for that! The staff has been helpful & attentive when I've been there too. Casual place but should add some outdoor seating options. read more
