Here's the thing, I live well over an hour from the nearest jeni's and all of their cool flavors makes me want to drive up there often to try them. As a berry fan I enjoyed each ice cream, however the texture wasn't my favorite as you could occasionally feel small ice crystals in the jams mixed into the ice cream. Three half scoops of ice cream will run you $7.95, which is a bit more expensive than other shops nearby but not so expensive that the treat didn't feel like a value. The flavors are absolutely fantastic and so creative; not just the standard options that you can find anywhere else. Some of my personal recommendations are Brambleberry Crisp with chunks of berries and streusel, Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks, and Gooey Butter Cake with actual pieces of cake and caramel swirls. Even the non-dairy flavors like Lemon Bar are perfectly creamy every time; no watered-down taste, ice crystals, or overwhelming coconut flavor like a lot of other dairy-alternative ice creams. Jeni's is more pricey than grocery stores brands, but it's not outrageous compared to other boutique options in the area. Their standard serving is two large scoops and a piece of freshly baked waffle crisp for about $7. They also offer ice cream flights of up to 10 flavors, waffle cones and bowls, pints, and 12-packs of half pints to go. The shop is very cute and the staff have always been really friendly. The space is bright and clean, there is party bunting on the ceiling, a jug of water for customers to help themselves, and a legible board with all their current flavors. This is Richmond's first Jeni's, and despite how often I travel to the DMV, I've yet to try Jeni's at one of their shops until now. I've tried their pints as sold at Whole Foods but never thought much of them. I think they're delicious; however, it was never a brand of ice cream I craved. My store experience wasn't too different than my Whole Foods experience. The ice cream tastes the same no matter where purchased. The advantage you have in the store is being able to sample the flavors before you buy and getting a waffle bowl/cone which are soooo oh oh oh fresh and tasty. Also, we tried the Pink Champ, described by Jeni's as "our first-ever sparkling beverage made specially to pair with ice cream. It's a flavor enhancer. Palate cleanser. And an all-around interesting drink Akin to a seltzer, less sweet than a soda, and with a refreshing tart edge, Pink Champ helps all the nuances of our flavors truly shine." I couldn't agree more with the description. It's definitely accurate. The tartness and lightness contrasts, balances, and well complements the ice cream. There was no indoor or outdoor seating, so we sat outside at a nearby restaurant on their patio. On the side of the Jeni's building (it's on the corner of Cary and Nansemond), there is a low wall you can probably fit around 3-4 people on and a city bench, but it's sad that Jeni's doesn't have at least one table outside or inside. The seasonal/temporary Brown Sugar Pop-Tart flavor was only available by the pint, so I took it home and tried it later. It tastes as awesome as it sounds! If you think the Brown Sugar Pop-Tart is one of the best flavors (which it IS ), you'll love the ice cream. I am a Jeni's stan and have been for 7 or 8 years. I moved to Richmond about a year ago and was SO sad when I realized that they didn't have a Jeni's. So you can only imagine my excitement when I learned a location was opening here. Unfortunately. My first couple visits were not so great and on one of them, I ended up leaving without even getting anything. "Why?" you ask!? Well because they scoop small. And by small, I mean TINY. And i You're paying like $7 or $8 for ice cream, then being charged $1.50 on top of that for a waffle cone, just for the scoops to drop inside to the bottom. On what earth do you have to eat CONE first in order to get to the ice cream?? IDK, Maybe toddler scoops are a new company standard, but like I said - I've been a customer for years, and visited shops in different cities/states and *never* ever ever complained about scoops until RVA. They also don't have seating, or even a counter to stand at and the area of Cary Town where they're located doesn't have very many benches. I love the variety of gluten-free ice cream. I told the lady serving me I was gluten intolerant, and she still offered me a cone. I've had Jeni's up in NOVA so I definitely wanted to check out their new branch in RVA. I went during their grand opening to get some free ice cream. I know it may not be the most representative of a typical customer's experience, but I wanted to highlight the ice cream flavors I got to try! The salted peanut butter with chocolate chunks is still my favorite because they do a great job balancing the sweet and savory flavors! The chocolate chunks are also a great addition as they aren't too sweet but balance out the nutty profile. The darkest chocolate was also pretty solid for me, but I can see how others might find it too bitter. The brown sugar almond brittle was another surprise for me! I loved how it tasted like almond milk (and almost like a traditional chinese almond dessert). The brown sugar/caramel swirls were a nice complement to the almond-y base flavor. I got my ice cream scoops in a waffle bowl and immediately recognized the subtle cinnamon flavors in their crispy waffle cones/bowls. You can just smell the buttery waffle flavors as soon as you walk in the store!! The opening event was much more organized that I had expected and staff were very friendly. FINALLY a place that has DELICIOUS dairy-free ice cream!! We stopped in here one Friday afternoon and we were not disappointed. I had a scoop of the Texas Sheet Cake (dairy free) in a sugar cone and it was decadent and chocolaty and amazing. My daughter ordered a scoop of the Strawberry Buttermilk in one of the signature waffle cones, she said it tasted homemade and she gobbled it up. My boyfriend and I paid our first visit to Jeni's ice cream tonight. We were pleased to see that the shop was clean and orderly. Staff were pleasant to deal with, had positive attitudes and that the environment was just generally welcoming. The menu included a wide array of very eclectic flavors, most of which we had never tried before. I opted for a "Standard" two scoop cup, my flavors of choice were brown butter almond brittle and salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks. The ice cream was very flavorful yet light and not overly sweet. My boyfriend made a similar choice for flavors and spoke highly of the quality of their waffle cones. I like unusual. I enjoy new experiences as does my husband. That's why we like Jen's ice cream.. This shop has flavors I've never heard of . Wild berry lavabdar.2.Buttersxirch Brownie . 3. Texas sheet cake . On our first visit I t tried darkest chocolate and butterscotch brownie,, My husband sampled Wildberry Lavandar and Darkest chocolate. Our second time there I ordered Wildberry Lavandar and a vegan option lemon bar. Next time our we had a chocolate decadence experience darkest chocolate and a non dairy option Texas sheet cake a combination of chocolate crumbles, cocoa, ahd fudge. The staff is warm and friendly as are most of the Virginias we've met. They are talkative and make customers feel welcome.
