This was a great hike! The trails were well-marked. It's busier than most trails I've hiked this summer but the folks you meet along the way are extremely friendly. It's a bit of a drive but worth it. Hiking as the leaves begin to change would be beautiful. Some years ago we also went snowshoeing here. read more

Sprague Brook is a well maintained park that is ideal for: - camping for families - mountain biking - hiking - fishing - winter activities such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, etc Much of the park is geared towards camping, but there is also a veterans remembrance area with some benches under trees, memorials, and a scenic pond, and then there are trails in the woods. The veterans area is mowed and would be a nice spot to setup a picnic. You'll also see people fishing in the pond over here. The trails are maintained for mountain bikers, which you'll see many of, but hikers can also use. Nothing crazy, but a lot of repetitive slight up and down, up and down, but not steep. If you're just going for a few hours, check out the memorial area, then head back towards the entrance, pass it, then turn right down the unpaved road before entering the "improved camping area", then park by the warm up house. There is a trail entrance there. It may depend on how far you want to hike, but nothing was incredibly scenic on our hike (from warm up house to pallet bridge). Would come back for a picnic, or walk another trail, but there are more scenic trails in WNY than this one. read more

I love this park, I camp here every year with my family during the weekend of Ellicottville's fall fest. It is my absolute favorite car ride of the year, once you get off the 219 or 400 and head your way to Sprague Brook all of the leaves that line the country roads and hills are changing before your eyes. This is a nice place to camp if you want to partake in the fall fest festivities but want to avoid the high cost and craziness of staying right in Ellicottville. The park is very relaxed and low key, you don't feel like you need to give up a kidney to check into your campsite like other parks. We were able to set up a tent on our camper site, and had extra vehicles and nobody bothered us about it. In fact you can usually just drive right to your site without stopping anyway. The park doesn't have as many hiking trails as some of the bigger parks in our area or as many recreational spots but it is one of my favorites if you just want to go to relax. The park is great for families though. It has a playground, fishing pond, tennis courts, baseball diamonds etc. They have both electric and non-electric sites, we opt for electric and have never had any issues. In the winter you can go snowmobiliing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, sledding etc. I'm a fan and will keep coming back! read more

This park doesn't seem big, but it is. Hiking trails that are for mounting biking and x-country skiing as well. Short hike or long it's what you want it to be. The creek is perfect for creek walking. Shallow enough to roll up your pants and no get them too wet, and a deep spot or two to cool off in. Or just hop rock to rock and stay dry! We love the creek walk. We usually take a short hike through the woods and take the creek back to the road. There's a small indoor facility for parties, a few shelters, a couple playgrounds for kids, and there's also a small campground. Cool place to picnic, hike or mountain bike/ I haven't rode my bike on the trails but I hear they are pretty awesome. I ride my bike to the park but I had no idea about the trails until this past visit. Check it out! read more

This is a great park. It seems small, but it's actually really big. Especially if you do the whole trail in the back of Sprague Brook. This park is good for anything outdoors, hiking, biking, fishing, camping, swimming, running, parties, sledding, snowshoeing, x country skiing, etc.. I am very glad we have something like this so close. It's not Yellowstone or Yosemite, but it's nice for what we have. read more

I just absoultely love this park and it's easily one of my favorite in all of Erie County. First of all the park is really big with miles of trails and loads to see. But what I love most about this park is the terrain. In a flat place like western New York this park provides some trails that have some challenge with sheer cliffs, hills, narrow edges, and mud and water I just love it. By no means are these trails or park difficult but I feel that they provide a significant enough challenge to make a hike worth it and feel like a challenge and not a walk in the woods. The main park trail is approx 5 miles long, but it takes about a mile to get to it from the beginning portion. There are also numerous snowmobile trails and other trails throughout the mark providing hours of new enjoyment and sights to see. The natural beauty of this park is best experienced deep in the quiet of the woods, near the babbling of the creek, and on the grassy hills overlooking the beautiful view of the mountains and hills of Southern Erie County. This park has camping as well, and they're nice campsites with actual privacy. They've got playgrounds for kiddos and plenty of picnic tables, benches, and shelters to enjoy if you're having a party or just for lunch. This park is great year round but I think it's especially pretty in the fall with the valleys and hills lit up with color. I've been here plenty of times and I'll be back plenty more, I love this place and I think you will too. read more

We love coming here for hikes. There are many great paths. The one we like doing the most is a ~7 mile loop. We've done it in the wintertime, too. I would issue caution when attempting to hike it in the winter -sometimes it's hard to find the path and unless you are vaguely familiar with the path, it could be pretty easy to accidentally get turned around the wrong way. Most of the time hiking boots is fine, unless there is 1.5+ feet of snow, then snowshoes might be advisable. Just remember, the trees and woods provide shelter so even if there's a foot of snow outside, there may be less in the woods; this is what we found when coming here. Waterproof hiking boots and gaiters work great. Also a word of caution because you cross the stream twice -when we went in January, the water was fast-moving and deep. We crossed anyway and our feet were soaked but as long as you have wool socks on, you should be fine to hike out! Highly recommend coming here if you are looking for a scenic hike! read more

Our family spent this weekend at Sprague Brook. Making the reservation with the Erie County Parks Department was easy, as was getting to this site, about 30 minutes South of Buffalo. The campsites were located pretty close together, but we were initially thrilled with the location of our site,(site 67) which was in view of a cute little fishing pond, as well as a playground. However, once it got closer to bedtime for our three kids, ages 6, 6 and 7, our Prime Time Location was less than desirable. The people in the campsite next door were clearly there to party, as were the family across the road from our tent. Despite the 11pm "Quiet Time" restriction, the party next door was in no way ready to close down, and two calls to the Rangers were met with an answering machine. The second night, we were able to get a great, solitary location (site 42), which although wasn't at all shady, it was much roomier, and much more secluded. Unfortunately, at 2 in the morning, a party at another site in the park busted out their karaoke machine, which was aggravating, but the rangers did a drive through around 2:45 and that seemed to take care of that. The bathrooms were ok - they did have hot water, which was awesome. They were not the cleanest, but I've definitely been in worse. The fishing pond was great - in the early AM, my kids caught 4 sunfish. The park itself is very beautiful, and located about 5 miles from the town of Springville, where they have all the modern amenities: big box stores (for emergency sweatshirts), grocery stores, pizza, etc. Despite the lax attitude to the "Quiet Hours" of 11pm to 8am, we would definitely go back - but if would be awesome if they had a more family friendly camping zone, with earlier quiet hours on the front and back (our kids were all up with the sun at 5am both days. sigh.) and far away from the partying crews. read more
