I'm not kidding when I tell you I ate here twice in one day. On the way to Taliesin we stopped in for coffee and (delicious) breakfast pastries. After the tour we went here for lunch. This place made me want to live in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The store was great, a lot of local hand crafted goods, as well as organic body products. The food at the cafe was really great, and even though they were busy at lunch, we found a seat and our food didn't take long at all. I'm so happy we found this place, and I'm missing it a little bit now as I write this. read more

The Spring Green General Store was a great place for lunch. Soup, salads and sandwiches seem to be their specialty with many vegetarian choices. The sandwiches came on tasty Ciabatta rolls and the Gazpacho soup was loaded with fresh crunchy vegetables. A space that has both retail and a restaurant, I enjoyed a flavorful and inexpensive lunch. A Mediterranean sandwich with a tangy feta cheese spread which had a hint of lemon. It was a very good sandwich. Added a cup gazpacho and that was very well made as well. It has a fun vibe and the whole place is a bit of an experience. read more

Very vegetarian friendly! They have tofu and veggie scrambles along with many other meatless options. The whole grain blueberry pancakes were to die for. They also had some freshly baked pastries which were delicious. Great coffee as well. If you're going for breakfast, plan on getting there at 8:00 to get a table. Otherwise, be prepared to wait. Also be sure there are no festivals going on. Every time my husband and I plan a drive out there for breakfast there is always some sort of festival going on such as Bob fest or Beatle fest and it's a zoo down there with no parking and if you do make it in there, the menu is limited. I had the Athens scramble and it was very flavorful. It came with a side of salsa and a small piece of sourdough bread which I thought was a little odd. I would have preferred toast or an English muffin. They do not make eggs to order, only scrambled. My husband prefers over easy eggs but had to settle for scrambled. They were pretty bland. The sausages were an extra $2 and were brown and serve. He asked me to stop buying him those at the grocery store years ago and then we go out for a pricey breakfast and that's what he got. Very disappointing. It would be nice if they offered some quality meat choices and eggs to order. The gift store is nice, although I believe they should really use at least half of that space for dining. I think that most people are there to eat not shop. read more

By far the best place in the area for breakfast or lunch. Not the traditional meat and potato greasy spoons Wisconsin is known for. They serve great local food made well. I love their Greek salad and hummus plater. They have daily specials, yea for hobble pobble! I love their strudel pancakes. They even use real Wisconsin maple syrup! Not maple flavored corn syrup.. Pricing is very fair. The is a down side, this place stays busy, very busy. They only have about two dozen tables and you wind up waiting. Its not that bad, you can place your order then wait for a table. For me It's simple, great food with a wait or bad food fast. read more

The lady taking our order was curt, and not very happy to see more customers. I was surprised since we experienced such friendliness throughout the rest of town. It became a joke over breakfast because she seemed to treat each new customer with equal displeasure. We had peach/raspberry pancakes that were ok. The GS is the best. Great food and awesome people. It's like home. Get your own coffee and bus your own table. Works just fine. You might have to interact with visitors and locals, make eye contact and communicate......the horrors! Get there early! If you're lucky you can get a Cinnimon Twist. Here's the deal: Notice that the cash register is OVER THERE. Notice the signs that explain the process of ordering. It's all very simple and fully documented. Get your face out of your phone and look around....interact with your environment. The place works. It's a local hangout and a visitors delight. Be nice. Smile. Enjoy an awesome meal cooked by someone who respects food and have some semi locally roasted yummy coffee. Notice the sign that says "Slow Food Zone". Chill. read more

The G Store is a gem! I grew up in Spring Green and went there a few times, but didn't truly appreciate all it had to offer until I moved away. Fortunately, I'm still within easy driving distance and try to go often when visiting my parents. Wonderful, wholesome foods with great choices for vegetarians, as well as many local options. The buckwheat pancakes are a MUST TRY for breakfast. Throw in some pecans and I'm swooning. They always have awesome coffees and feature a new one maybe weekly? Lunch is great too, I generally go for the special or the soup of the day and have never been disappointed. The store itself has so many things to offer. I could spend all day looking around at the fun kitschy things or the organic health products. There are some great music festivals in the summertime. An all-around great place! If you're head to SG for a show at APT, make sure to go early and hit up the G Store for a delicious meal. read more

This is a place that could easily be missed if you weren't looking for it, but what a shame that would be. You enter the store, where you can find drinks, pre-made sandwiches and local, hormone-free cheeses in the refrigerated case. The general store sells a variety of chocolates, natural and organic products, and toys. The café is to the right and it sells a variety of high-quality food at reasonable prices. My chicken waldorf salad was excellent. But the best things I purchased were the bakery items. The scone was fantastic and the cinnamon roll (a long twist of cinnamon bread topped with maple cream cheese icing) was so amazing I almost drove back to the store to buy more. It's located just before Taliesen and the House on the Rock, so it's a convenient place to either stop for lunch, or to place an order to-go and enjoy a picnic before or after your visit to these places. read more

I didn't hate this place but the wait and treatment of customers was pretty disappointing. I waited 20 minutes for a hot drink to go before finally just leaving. Another time where we came to sit down and eat the food was good, but cold. It seems like they might need more people in the kitchen, but maybe if you catch them on a slow day you'll have a good experience. read more

Hey - your info is wrong. There IS outdoor seating! On the back of the store is the "Smoking Dog" porch for those who smoke &/or have dogs. Complete with water dish for the puppers. AND the original balcony set from American Players Theatre's Romeo and Juliet production is in the back yard and offers a delightful shaded area for families to gather in summer. AND the do have alcohol, Todd and Karin offer many delightful beers - many of them locally produced! As one of the previous reviews stated - the General Store IS one of the best things about living in Spring Green. This was like discovering a community that was hand made for me. I was campaigning in Spring Green and saw that there were people parked all over, walking towards this store. I walk with them and learn of Bob Fest, a free event of music and politics and amazing people. The food here (fresh made) was delicious and amazing. The have a wooden porch you can sit out on and a large grassy back area. It is all wooden and has a nice old timey feel. The owner even let me do some canvassing on property during Bob Fest, how cool is that?!? read more

Can't stop in Spring Green without visiting this gem. Great breakfast and lunch. Versatile menu with interesting dishes. Advertised as "old school comfort food with a creative twist." Have to place your order at the counter, then the cashier hands you a table card with the name of a country. They deliver your food, but guests have to do the clearing. My burrito was immense--the size of a torpedo. Couldn't finish it. Great soups. It's not uncommon to be told there is a wait for your food. We were told half an hour and got our food in 10 minutes. The general store has an array of clothing (women's), jewelry and other fun things. It's fun to just browse. read more

This place is always good, and the food is always great. Ive been going for years. Quality of staff can vary a bit, but overall, it is a great breakfast place, and a very good lunch spot. Coffee is excellent also. Some days are just crazy busy, but they mange really well throughout the year, and quality is consistent. I hate to rate this quaint place so low. It has free Internet and locals gather to spontaneously entertain you with music. The breakfasts are the only standout meal here. Ok. The soups have merit too. I had a lunch there that really made me mad. The tuna sandwich was $8. It was very small and had no sides. The salads lack any substance too. The manager should take a trip to the Prairie Cafe in Middleton to see how it should be done! Next time we are off to Freddy Valentines or the Shed for lunch. read more

Have eaten there for years but it's really gone downhill in the past 6 months. Significant increase in prices, everything is "extra", and the kitchen staff are a bunch of kids who can't get a simple order right. Was there with a friend, we both ordered the Virgo, mine with sausage, his with toast. His came with toast and sausage, mine came plain. Both were dry and overcooked. He ordered a pancake which came 10 minutes after the Virgo. I ordered French toast which came 5 minutes after the eggs. The place used to be jammed on a Sunday but was virtually empty today, now I know why. read more

This is what it says, a general store, but they have a small cafe as well and it is one of the earlier-opening establishments (830am) in this small town to grab some breakfast before going off to the area's attractions. They have quiche some mornings (if you're early enough), and the one we had was very good. My husband, on a different morning, had the "breakfast sandwich," i.e., eggs on an English muffin, and he said it was good. Gorgeous cinnamon pastries, and down-home friendly staff. No white linens, no china -- still, 5 stars for just being there, and a place you don't want to miss for breakfast when you're in Spring Green. (I was very impressed by the little sign in the front window "you can use the restrooms inside, no purchase necessary". So representative of Wisconsin civility.) read more

Stopped in for lunch with a couple of other people yesterday and had the most creative and delicious sandwich I have had in a very long time--a "grilling cheese" sandwich. It consisted of a thick slice of perfectly grilled cheese (with a solid, smooth texture) and was topped with roasted jalapenos, chipotle aioli, and greens. Served with a cup of soup or a salad, the meal was more than filling, but it was one of those meals you had to finish just because you knew you were not going to be having it again soon and would miss it. It was a beautiful end of summer day in Spring Green, and the cafe stop made the day all that much more delightful. read more

Love this place! Such a great place to grab breakfast! I have been here many times and I always end up going with one of their ommlets and they all are divine and made from farm fresh eggs. This place has a very liberal relax vibe so a perfect place to come with friends or solo to read the newspaper. This has to be one of the top places to have breakfast in WI! read more

The store is lovely and quaint! It's very aesthetically pleasing! The sun porch is a great addition and place to sit. However, the food there is... not good for what the price is. A good portion of food on the menu is microwaved. The burritos are made fresh! We torch the tortilla on the gas stove and then put the re-fried beans that cook all day on and whatever else the customer wants on the burrito. Then what do they do? They pop it in the microwave! Why? I don't know myself. I find it too be a foolish practice. The coffee? Eh. If you're planning on getting a latte or cappuchino don't hold your breath it'll taste way different every time. They don't know how much espresso to put in. The vegeburgers? Morning star patties cooked on the panini. That's not so bad... except they sell the burgers for more than the price of an entire BOX of patties. They also can't hold staff to save their lives! You can go in maybe once a week and expect to see someone missing or a new face. They've gone through I believe... about 7 people in the past 6 months. Not what I would call good managing. The food is overpriced and quite mediocre. You'd be better off going to Carlitos. Even culvers is better than this place. Don't bother buying stuff from the store, you can get it for half off at Walmart. The store may look pretty and sometimes you'll get really friendly employees but don't be fooled. This place is a disaster that runs straight down to who runs the place. Many times you go in there and you'll meet standoffish employees who seem to act high and mighty. It's better to get your food elsewhere. The only good thing I can really say about this place is the fact that it's nice and pretty on the inside and there are plenty of outlets to plug your laptop into. Really though, why spend over seven dollars on an italian sub you could make at home for half the price! The food there is way overpriced and although they may get good business it does not mean there are not flaws in the system. The employees are unhappy in their environment and a majority of their business comes from tourists who don't know any better. The environment is also quite toxic as many of the regular customers seem to have their heads up their bums. It's just not a good place to be around. People act stuck up and high and mighty and who likes feeling judged? No one. It may seem like a great place but honestly there are many, many, MANY better options in town. I don't like knowing that a majority of the warm food is microwaved. Especially things that are made fresh and then thrown into a microwave. It just doesn't make sense! If you like the place more power to you! But the staff is unfriendly and the environment is just blargh! Not my kind of spot. I'd much rather grab something from Culvers or even the gas station then waste my money there. read more
