My partner and I stayed here one night while driving cross-country and it was such a welcome break from roadside motels and chains! Beautiful view of the woods from our room, a sweet little deck, clean spacious rooms, comfortable bed, super kind staff, and all kinds of personal touches (loved perusing the yearbook from 1930 in the hallway). The first room we were given unfortunately had a broken sink faucet in the bathroom, but the staff quickly and kindly switched us to the room next door. I could have done without the television playing during breakfast (felt counter to the peacefulness of the rest of the environment) and would love to see a move away from styrofoam/plastic to dishes/utensils that are more eco-friendly... but all in all, a wonderful gem. Also seems super convenient for anyone visiting the lake/dunes. We'll be back! read more

This hotel is dated but charming. Pool was fine for us and I really enjoyed the scenic sitting areas to read or meditate. The beds were hard for me and my bit of arthritis but husband and kid thought it was fine. Cons: odor of old smoke/musty. Even though website and other liturature said cribs available they did not have any and our toddler slept on a blanket on the floor or in between us in the queen bed. No compensation offered upon complaint. read more

I really want to give this place a three, but I can't. There are some good things and bad about this place. It was easy to make my reservation for a king size/hot tub room. Rates were pretty average...we loved the view, but our patio door was very hard to open and close. We were looking forward to the complimentary breakfast until we discovered cold sausage links (there was a microwave) and cold boiled eggs. I really wanted to make my husband a waffle, but there were no waffles on the morning we went. The room was pretty decent - the bed was comfy, but there was mold on top of the air conditioner and the carpet felt moist all over, so we wore beach shoes in the room the whole time. The pool was ok. It was really cold in the room and in the pool. The hot tub was closed, but we really liked the sauna/steamroom. Definitely helped warm us up after swimming in the cold pool. Everything considered, I would probably stay here again. The staff we dealt with were pretty nice, and the view is really pretty. read more

This is absolutely the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my entire life! Seriously, I was a traveling salesman for several years and stayed at dives everywhere in the US. This is by far the worst. Words cannot explain how bad it is. Stains on the floor were scary. The room greeted us with a wonderful septic system smell. The staff were horrible Housekeeping did not even clean our room on our second day. We had to go to the front desk to at least ask for towels. They were thrown at us with no apology. The breakfast was literally inedible. I would not pay $10 a night to stay at this dump. read more

Come on guys, for the price, this is a great little stay. I loved it. It was a nice country atmosphere. The staff were helpful. The breakfast was great for being a hotel breakfast. The back balcony has a great wooded view. Sure it has its downfalls. The walls are thin and you can hear your neighbors tv. We were there for three days and I never saw a maid, although we knew they were around because they did do a good job at keeping things clean. They Just never checked on us. For the price, you can't get much better. You get what you pay for. It's no 5 star hotel but it's a great little stay. I don't think people are giving the hotel credit that it deserves in their reviews. I will be staying there again. read more

I try to be respectful to businesses and I don't use yelp that much, but this place is really disappointing. 1) I booked a nonsmoking room online, paid for it, etc. Then I arrive and they put me in a smoking room and claim "it does not smell like smoke." Yeah right. It smells like a cigarette farm in here. They offered me an upgrade to a "whirlpool" non smoking room for more money. Any other place would have given me the upgrade for free considering I already paid and booked the room. 2) The balconies are adorable but umm there is no place to sit. Don't advertise enjoying the balcony and wingback chairs and all this when there's a rickety balcony outside with no furniture and absolutely nothing. Lame. 3) The sauna is broken. The pool is disgustingly dirty. I should've read the reviews. :( read more

Have stayed here annually over the past 4 years on fathers day weekend during a charity bike ride. the facility was quaint but much in need of updating. However the new owners are investing resources in this hotel & it shows. New bedding, new rugs (in my 2nd floor room - remainder of hotel on schedule to be completed by years' end), new wall paper & curtains pool room totally rehabbed & the lovely sitting rooms at the end of the 1st & 2nd floors have all been updated. There's now a legitimate breakfast option with scrambled eggs, sausages & the usual make your own waffles (including the adorable mini-waffle maker for kids or if you don't want a full one). On my opinion, the owners are really trying to bring this back to what it was like when it was built. Plus they now have a liquor license so I don't have to pack a cooler with some post ride cocktails, I can just grab a reasonably priced beer from the front desk & chill on the patio. I'm so glad I came back again this year. read more

Coffee machine had previous guest coffee packets in the tray still. The facility is a little old and rundown. Check in process took forever and made me late for an event. The only room they had left when i checked in didn't have a key so they had to let me in each time. When i said that this was unacceptable for the same rate that every other guest had they did not offer any compensation. The manager on duty was unsympathetic and very rude. Told me that it was more inconvenient for them than me. Also upon checking out the manager noticed that i was charged incorrectly by a few dollars and went into further detail about how that would be docked from the employees pay which is very unprofessional. Situations like that should be handled behind the scenes not to customers. I will not stay there again or recommend it to anyone. read more

Stayed at the Spring House for a couple days. The place is under recent new ownership and there making great progress. They have spent a lot of money to make the improvements. I enjoyed the pool and exercise room. The room itself was very clean and the water was hot. The place has a very honey feel to it, nice decor and amenity. Your in the ravines and woods, very nice atmosphere and charming. The comp breakfast was good and the staff was readily available, so my stay was excellent and I will stay there again. Best of all the rates are fantastic for this quality of Inn. read more

I initially booked on an online travel site for a 1 night stay. I then changed the check out date making this a 2 night stay. I received confirmation for that change via email. We arrived at Spring House Inn the evening of 8/19/16 and were initially informed that they had NO reservation for us. The clerk then looked at the confirmation I had pulled up for him on my smart phone and asked me to give him a few minutes. I was then told that since I had the confirmation, they would give us the 2 night stay. I was charged 2 transactions of $88.48 to debit visa totalling $176.96 (2 night stay plus tax etc). We immediately went to our room and then left to go to dinner. While at the restaurant I received a phone call from Spring House Inn informing me that we COULD NOT stay as the hotel was fully booked already. We immediately went back, cleaned out our room,  were told both transactions were "voided" on debit visa, and left. We were then forced to find another hotel to check in to. Debit visa still had a hold on it for the $176.96, plus a hold from second hotel within 1 hour's time. This caused bank to lock the debit card for fraud protection. By this time we had a screaming, tired, hungry 3 yr old and a locked visa debit with $176.96 hold STILL on it! The Spring House Inn grounds were unkempt, the rooms were dirty and out dated and we were literally thrown out of there after already being given a room! I honestly wish I had taken pictures! Other reviews called it "charming". I call it dusty, musty smelling and desperately in need of upkeep!! All we wanted was a quick weekend get away and ended up in a nightmare!! The Spring Hill Inn staff blamed the problem on the travel site and told me to make a complaint there. I realize that could be the case, but they offered no other solution to this issue. In the hospitality industry, this place was sorely lacking!!! My suggestion? Spend a few bucks more and stay somewhere else! read more

I booked a whirlpool king for this weekend (over 5 weeks ago), as an anniversary surprise for my wife. We arrived in a little past 10pm this evening, checked in and went to our room. Upon entering I realized it did not have a whirlpool. I returned to the front desk and explained the error. The attendant looked up my reservation and confirmed the room was wrong, however they did not have a whirlpool room available for our entire stay. I told her this was unacceptable, and was then told there is a room that a guest had not yet checked into. She contacted the owner to authorize the switch, the owner refused. I then learned to following details: My reservation was made at a much earlier date, I booked directly from their site (other party through AirB&B) I paid more. Not to mention I am there. The compensation I was offered, was that we could stay in the downgraded room and that they would be "so kind" as to reimburse us the difference for the downgrade. Really?! I asked to speak to the owner, he refused. I finally just asked for a refund but was told "the owner will not be refunding you until tomorrow". I had to call my CC and file a dispute, in order to finally get a refund. During the exchange I was also told (accidentally I believe) that this kind of error happens often. We had no luck finding another place to stay due to some festival this weekend, and now at 4am I write this (after driving back home). Anniversary weekend ruined. read more

I stayed here in Fall 2016 and while the building was charming and the location quiet and in the woods, everything was broken - TV. WiFi. hair dryer. No coffee available and hardly any food. Because I love this historic inn and its location, I came back - things had improved so much. Excellent WiFi, TV not only worked but had over 300 channels; room was very large and spotless, bed was comfortable, there was coffee available. Very quiet and relaxing. I had a great stay and will be back in a few months. Can't wait to see the view from the room balcony in spring. read more

This place was decent. Staff friendly, breakfast nice, room was clean besides the giant cobweb on the ceiling. I have two small children and there was a broken outlet in the room so I had to push a chair in front of it so my one year old wouldn't touch it. The smoke detector was hanging from the ceiling by a wire which was unappealing but whatever. My kids were looking forward to the pool and it was very underwhelming. The pool room itself was maybe only 65 degrees, there were switches to turn on heat, humidity, and the fireplace but none of them worked. The pool water was cold too and it said it was 3ft deep but it was more like 4.5-5. So besides the pool the place was decent. Not in town though so you do need to drive if you need food or anything. read more

Really want to say 3 stars but just can't. First of all let me say we had a nice stay...not so much 'because' of the Inn as we modified and made our own fun. However, with that said, upon pulling up to the Inn you get the feeling you have found a secret place far from the beaten path...real far. The trees, brush, WEEDS are all overgrown and the parking lot is huge with plenty of weeds and no cars. Upon further examination of the inn itself, being that it is in the woods what some may find 'charming' I found to be dirty...cobwebs, spiderwebs and leaves stuck in different places in the entryway were icky. As you enter the lobby your view changes...pretty, cozy, and quaint, you will sigh a breath of relief that maybe all is not as it seems. Our room was a jacuzzi king suite and it was ok, housekeeping could do a better job and tho there is cable, no option for ordering movies and no dvd player. A/C was working, bed was comfy, however room 110's jacuzzi is the smallest of all of them. The pool area was clean but hot tub was empty and the manager said its due to their rates being so cheap right now...doesn't make a whole lot of sense cuz to me you still offer all aspects, that's what makes people want to come back and pay a regular price. Overall for their special summer rate it was worth it...we stayed 2 nights for the price of one (regular rates.) Continental breakfast is ok...more then just donuts and cereal, we were offered busquits and gravy too one morning. I think had the fireplaces been lit, hot tub been working, and landscaping more appealing this review would have been closer to 4 stars. The Springhill Inn is a nice place. However, the carpets need cleaning or replacing AND the furniture needs cleaning or replacing. Needless to say, the carpets and furniture were stained and in desperate need of cleaning. Worst of all, the towels were super-thin and very scratchy. Ever hear of fabric softener???? Worst of all, check out was at 12pm and yet we were bothered twice about checkout before then. We felt rushed and harassed. read more

First, this will be my future choice of stay when I visit the dunes. It was the peaceful stay I was hoping for. Though it doesn't offer the resort amenities, it has the same vintage (1960's) feel in the rooms and common areas as Chestnut Mountain and Eagle Ridge in Galena, IL and the Abbey near Lake Geneva. Though there is some opportunity for improvement, it was better than I was expecting. I paid $79 in August, 2015. Pros: King room is more like a Jr. Suite, with love seat, chair, desk, mini fridge and microwave; great view of the savannah from the balcony; common areas are in very good condition; non-smoking room was odorless-- no residual tobacco odor at all (maybe this has always been a non-smoking room). Cons: Room was generally clean but could have been a little better; room could use new carpet and fresh paint. Other: Staff was friendly and qualified but not polished. A little extra training might help (not too much though-- stuffy staff would be worse). Some break-out areas appear to be available for group gatherings-- may be worth checking out for company functions. Breakfast was slightly above average compared to other hotels. read more

Like others have said, they would've gotten better reviews if not for the manager, Danielle. She was horrible! All of the other staff were very nice and respectful. We stayed for one night and had many issues. Entrance lights to our room didn't work..neither did the bathroom lights. Wifi never worked our entire stay even after they "reset the routers". They claimed it was from a storm a few days prior which I now believe is just an excuse. The advertised pool, sauna, etc. is so dated, dirty, and disgusting. Not to mention, the pool was freezing. Our balcony door only opened if you yanked on it with all your strength. Speaking of doors, our main door to the hallway would not shut the entire evening and night. So we ended up having to sleep with an unlocked, open door! Not safe at all! There were bugs everywhere (dead and alive). The entire place is very dated, and breakfast left much to be desired. We were told to speak to the manager at checkout to talk about how they would fix this all for us. After checking out our room, the woman covering for the manager called her and explained the situation. They gave us a full refund. We left satisfied. An hour later, we received a call from the manager chewing us out for making her come in on her day off to check out the room which she insisted only had one lightbulb out, even after we told her we had video and photographic evidence of everything wrong. Danielle continued to yell and told us she was taking our refund back. She even went so far as to lie about seeing video of us swimming in the pool (We stuck our feet in and decided it was way too cold!) Needless to say, Danielle was the worst manager we've ever experienced...HORRIBLE! DON'T STAY HERE! read more

We just stayed here on out of desperation. They had the last available room in this part of our trip every hotel for an hour each way booked up. THANK GOD WE FOUND IT. THE BEST PLACE I HAVE BEEN TO IN YEARS!!!!!! No joke this place looks right at home in the European forest great mix of Bavarian /French country. People have said the place is dated but it really isn't. It is designed to look this way. My son is huge into design and really hard on hotels and even he loved this place. The pool was great the beds were comfortable the room and beds were immaculate and the rooms are big with big bathrooms which I can't stress how clean this place is. If you want a place that has character and not the cookie cutter chain hotel this is the place for you. We stayed in our fair share of hotels from the Double Tree to the Red Roof and this was the best overall value I have had. They were awesome. If you listen to the desk the local food is great. Honestly If you have or have had a bad experience here then that is on you not the facility . The breakfast was waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. If you needed anything all we had to do was ask they even brought a fan to help my son sleep. I will be back here this summer to see what the area has to offer with my kids and again with my wife for our anniversary. read more

We stopped here on our way to Michigan and this was the nastiest hotel we have ever stayed in. We found a hair pin, lid behind the chair and part of a wrapper on the floor. There was a candy bar and half eaten bowl of ice cream in the fridge. The coffee pot was nasty and still had a used coffee filter in it. The WiFi never worked and we were told that it needed to be reset, and then we were later told by management the Internet was down due to storms that happened 4 or 5 days earlier. Miraculously, the front desk still had their Internet. The pool was colder then Lake Michigan! Breakfast was a joke! The selection was horrible and pretty much everything was gone. The most disgusting was the public hair in our washcloth!! We called the front desk to complain and she told us to talk to the manager in the morning. Supposedly, the manager emailed the owner and was supposed to get back to us later that day. After not hearing from her for 2 days, we called and we were told that we were offered another room and we didn't take it. That was an outright lie! Who in their right mind would have stayed in that discusting room?? Management made us feel like we were trying to pull one off on them to get a discount on the room. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place! We will never be back!! read more
