I'm leaving a 5 star review because I've had great experiences here with a very knowledgable staff. They haven't tried to up sell me anything and have been fairly helpful. A lot of cool exotic stuff, not just your typical fish store. They can do custom set ups too. That being said, I do have a complaint: The great staff I'm referring to is almost never there. There have been multiple visits where I show up and they only have their one worker who literally knows nothing about aquariums holding down the fort. He's obviously hired just to do busy work so I can't blame him but where are the main guys who run this place? I drive 45 minutes to come here and I've been disappointed several times. I think the management should reconsider their operating hours since half the time the store isn't really operating. If I wasn't so impressed by my first few visits I would not be leaving a 5 star. read more

Not sure what has happened to this business. Seems to be by appointment only. Young guy at the desk is helpful, but has to check with the owner before he sells anything. So I wanted some rock for my new tank, and picked out a few pieces in the back. Was just about to pay, and the guy checks with the owner who then tells him the rock can't be sold. Great place for SPS corals and everything reef related. This place is a far ways from my house but I would not hesitate to call it one of my favorite stores in all of Southern California. Aaron, the owner, runs a very neat shop with great service and prices as well. He is extremely knowledgeable and fair; won't sell you bad corals or fish before they go through a very rigorous quarantine process. In the shop, you'll find a HUGE tank right when you walk in with has tons of beautiful SPS and a huge variety of fish as well. To the right, you'll see their smaller SPS tank with LEDS. Aaron runs different types of lighting on all his coral tanks, showcasing the positives and negatives of different types of lighting (meta halides, T5, LEDS) as well as different types of brands of LEDS (AI, Ecotech, Maxspect, etc). It's great to be able to see what types of lighting produce what kind of results and it gives you an idea of how these corals will look underneath your own tank as well. Come here to become impressed and amazed by everything! The only thing I dislike about it is that it's a little small. Congrats to Aaron for starting this store front and opening it to beginners, hobbyist, and professionals alike. read more

Best fish store in the area. I have been a reefer for a long time and I have not found a better store to date. It is extremely clean and they have a huge inventory of the top brands like ecotech and innovative marine. Brands that are too expensive for most stores to keep on hand. Jesse and Aaron have one of a kind customer service! Last week they ordered a clownfish morph and they had it in store two days later. They answer questions very quick via email and are willing to work with me on any project or idea I have. I love this place and have made it my go to LFS. read more

This is a great lil boutique coral store. Aaron the owner is extremely friendly and great to deal with. He has a great selection of unique and interesting corals that he is farming. His coral prices are reasonable. The shop is clean and has a great assortment from bread and butter to the rarer stuff in both the fish and coral selection. Amazing shop for SPS they have all of the "named" pieces i have been searching for without a huge price tag. The owner is a hobbyist at heart and will try and make sure you can actually be successful with the coral or fish you are buying. This shop really bridges the gap between - Profit & Customer Service. They archive everything you buy so in case you lose it, you can always come back and pull up your purchase history and get another frag! I can't believe this is my LFS! Who knew the north glendale/la canada area would have a small, high end reef store with all the name brand coral frags, and ORA livestock. And the prices are fair! And the display tanks are immaculate. And the owner/workers truly knowledgable. This place won't impress the casual fish keeper, as it's aimed towards the reef elitist who wants all the best name brands and blingy frags. But for those of us in the know, and addicted to this expensive hobby, this place is LEGIT. read more

I was very excited to see some really great specimens of ORA seahorses. All aquaculture photosynthetic gorgs were decent. Some algae issues. Prices were high, but it's because they were aquacultured. I will be back for a really nice piece of gorg ASAP. Overall, small store, high quality goods, worth the visit if you have the budget. read more

I went in here with my boyfriend who has a small 4 gallon salt water tank. We were lookin for a new aquarium store after growing frustrated with the quality of product and service received from other aquarium supply stores near Pasadena. The owner of SPS Coral was very helpful and knowledgeable about what would succeed in my bf's tank and even helped him out with aptasia control. They have a great selection of frags, all of which are very beautiful! Definitely know where to go for aquarium things now. All in all: a quaint store with a vast selection of frags, pleasant owner who is helpful and knowledgable and cares about his fellow hobbyists. This place is great. The store even smells great. Most aquarium stores smell like low tide. SPS is bright and very clean. They are small and are not trying to everything, but what they do, they do right. All of the corals look extremely healthy, as do the few fish that they have (they specialize in corals). We really like how the fish are quarantined for 2 weeks before being sold. They also will not hesitate to call a Vet to check on their fish, if needed. My son (6 yrs), wife, and I are newbies. Aaron gave us GREAT advice to help us get started with our new tank. From what we can tell, he uses very modern techniques. We bought 2 paired clowns that are doing great. They were initially fighting a lot to decide dominance. We emailed Aaron and he gave us some very helpful advice. We have emailed him a number of times, and he always responds very fast and treats us like we are his number one customer, even though we have not spent a lot of money there (yet). We live in West LA so it's pretty far for us to get to SPS but definitely worth it. read more

Sad, it used to be the best coal store available in the area. Good pricing and selections good customer service before. Now I had been there twice. Guy at the register said everything in the tank are display only. About 10 polyp frags with tons of algae growing on them are the only thing on sale. I purchased from them many times I know they have tons of great stuff in the back as well. But this new guy just don't want any business anymore. read more

This place does have pretty decent and healthy livestock. However; the older gentlemen that helped me had poor customer service skills, and Poor advice. I really wanted to find a good clean coral store and I thought this was it based on the reviews. What a disappointment! It's very small, about 200 SQ feet if that, a few dirty frag tanks, and a teenage behind the desk. So much potential yet poorly executed, I know u guys can do better! We need a good store in the area, step it up! I'm going to leave a four star rating just because I don't like bringing down a business's ratings but the owners should step it up. Clean up the tanks and have more frags for sale. Not just a fancy display tank and a few bottles of supplements on a rack. read more

I have not seen Aaron who has been great. Now there is an elderly gentleman who couldn't really provide the service I needed... I went in to check my water and buy some chemi-pure. I came out buying some water clarifier and coral food that (I only later found out) I really didn't need. He tested my Phosphate which came out to be an error (I found out later). He also said he would email the other test results. Of course, I got no email for 2 weeks. I hope Aaron comes back. It's a great store otherwise. Corals look very healthy in the tank. read more

If you are looking for SPS corals this place is like heaven! Small shop, but plenty of room for their specialty. Very helpful service and lots of information for a beginner starting out with SPS corals. Prices are very fair and a great selection of SPS as well as other corals and saltwater fish, but SPS is what you want to come here for. read more

Was a nice shop for a short while, now not so much. Just another run down saltwater store with barely any livestock. What they do have looks incredibly unhealthy. Main display tank was mostly dead coral and pest anemones. Such a bummer since for awhile they looked like they were going to be a legit shop but just gone straight downhill in the last year. Live a half hour away in the valley. Still make the hike out here. They are a smaller shop but carry more hardware than anyone else. They also only carry the best quality livestock and keep the store up well. Everyone there has great knowledge of the industry as well. I would suggest checking them out if you have a saltwater tank. read more

I live in Sacramento and I hear nothing but great thing about L.A coral stores but man this store is much a disappointment all the corals are basic or dead. The display tank in the front has nothing but dead skeletons or almost dead. I hope they get their "sps" coral on point. I wish it was a better store! The customer service was par when we first walked in there was no one in the shop then out comes a younger man to just say "how's it going?" And that's all. read more

I am a reef keeper from Colorado, decided to check out some aquarium stores while visiting friends in Southern California. Having visited 5+ stores earlier in the day, SPS coral was by far the worst. To start there wasn't any SPS corals alive in the store! All the coral was bleached or dead skeletons. I had trouble finding any healthy specimens. Having visited several stores already, SPS coral was the first that I bought anything at, and I regret it. Terrible disrespectful customer service by a young man who clearly didn't want to deal with me. They didn't follow the prices on the stickers! Then asked me if I wanted my change. Already having paid double what I expected, the last thing I wanted to do was pay more. If Terrible selection of brown and dead corals wasn't enough, there was no fish livestock available. Seriously never felt compelled to write a yelp review before, but don't shop here, literally any other store in the LA store is better. read more

I visited the store today and loved it. If you are a SPS fanatic, this is the store. I met the owner's father, Henry and he was very friendly and helpful. I bought a few items and they were very reasonable in price. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was that I wish it was a larger store. All of the corals look healthy and the tanks were all well maintained. The store was air-conditioned. Definitely a very well-stocked store. Came with my boyfriend during our LA pet store tour to pick up additional coral. Relatively small, but crystal clear water quality, tidy aquarium, great selection of corals, and most of all, friendly and helpful employee. We picked small candy coral for $10, which is doing great in our pico tank. read more

This is a great shop for all your hard to find items including dry goods and coral. Aaron and his father are great people that will answer all your questions and point you in the correct direction towards keeping a successful marine aquarium. I can't wait to come back to the shop as I haven't been there in quite some time and would enjoy to see their wonderful display tank since it was very hot that day and the AC was broken. Great store. Even though it's a small place, they have a lot of great SPS corals, and they have small frags of a number of them for a reasonable price, which works nice with my tight budget. And all the people there are very nice and very willing to help and answer questions and give guidance. I also really liked hearing that the fish they sell have either been tank-raised or they have quarantined them for 6 weeks and treated them before offering them for sale in order to make sure they are not going to spread a disease to other fishes in your tank, and to also make sure that they are not going to have some problem eating and dying from starvation in a few days after you get them home. read more

In a most disappointing turn of events, SPS Coral Store has, in every manner, lost the traits which once made it an excellent local fish store. The customer service is as poor as one can imagine--it could only be worse were there no employee at all present--, the knowledge of the shop's monitor is unparalleled in nonexistence, and the coral and fish tanks which once were so well looked after now appear as though they were taken from a grimy pond. When at first one walks in to the store, one once was greeted with a "Hi! How are ya today? Is your tank doing well?" Now rarely is the staff member even at the front of the store. He will not ask if one needs any help when he finally sees one, saying, if anything, only "Hey." When I first became a customer, there was a man named Jesse who was almost always there. He could answer any questions one had on product and livestock availability and use and care. When he stopped appearing, Aaron, the owner of the shop, and either his daughter or his father Henry, would be there. All three were extremely knowledgeable and lovely to speak with on topics concerning aquatics. About one year ago, their appearances began to dwindle, replaced by a fellow without personality and who, frankly, has not the slightest idea what customer service should be like, nor has he any knowledge of saltwater tanks beyond that of a neophyte. It is astounding and saddening that a shop with such a passionate owner would hire someone who could not answer any questions at all. I have frequently seen him with a notepad of answers to common questions he could not answer. If one's question is not in that notepad, I give my blessings to him who tries to make sense of his confused babbling. Once I asked about the price of a new pump for my chiller, and he again and again said, "Chillers are expensive." I explained at least three times that I already owned the chiller and only needed a new pump, but obviously he was trying to avoid the question. At another point, when I needed a replacement scrubbing pad and had forgotten to get one from a decent establishment, I asked a question about which he thought was best. He began telling me about how he did not know the order of the nitrogen cycle--elementary for reef-keeping. His lack of experience with the hobby shines through in the way he cares for, or, rather, neglects to care for, the tanks in the shop. I try to avoid using this store as much as possible now, but when I do occasionally go in for emergency purchases (like the scrubbing pad), the tanks always have algae on the glass and bottoms and the corals look bleached and unhealthy most of the time. The shop in general looks dirtier than ever it did before, with water spills and live rock pebbles scattered across the floor. As I said, only when I must do I shop here. I find difficulty supporting a business that does not keep its once-high standards. It seems I am not alone, since there is rarely another customer, unlike before when there was always someone else looking around. read more

I have been going to this store for a while now. They always have an excellent selection of fish, SPS, and other coral. They also have the largest selection of in stock dry goods I have seen. Protein skimmers, dosers, controllers, lighting, supplements, reactors, food, they have it all. Another great thing about this store is the knowledgeable staff. They pay close personal attention to their customers needs, and often go above and beyond to help their customers out. When I first started out with reef keeping I had several issues with my tank. They took the time, listened and helped me correct these issues. They never push products to make a sale, and always give honest advice. Although this store is rather far away from me now it's the only store I actually go to. read more
