This place is where I discovered my love for aquariums! I'm not sure how I stumbled upon it or why I decided to go in, but it was during the COVID pandemic that I walked into Sunset Pets and was instantly captivated. I had never had any interest in the aquarium hobby, fish, or aquatic plants before. I had a 1-gallon cube with a sump, but without any knowledge of the nitrogen cycle (don't do this!), I impulsively purchased six bright endler live bearers, two of each color, and a very unfortunate female who had been accidentally shipped with the males. At the time, it was nearly impossible to find female endlers because endler breeders didn't want us to know how incredibly easy it is to breed these fish. A few months later, I had expanded my collection to nine aquariums, each dedicated to raising all the babies my fish had produced. They taught me the basics of cycling and how plants help eliminate ammonia, and I gradually began adding plants to my tanks. Once I had a few cycled tanks, I started keeping new species of fish. This shop also sells birds, reptiles, and rodents, but I can't provide my opinion on those because I've only purchased fish, aquatic plants, and fish supplies. Amazing shop over all, love the owner's passion about animals and fishes. I'm coming to get some live rats for my snakes, it's a bit pricey compared to reptile factory. One small live rats is $7, meanwhile the reptile factory is $3.7. But it's a one stop shop, you can basically get everything you need. So, this establishment just lost a formerly loyal customer who has spent hundreds of dollars in this store, and was planning to continue spending hundreds of dollars in the future... but not anymore. I've shopped at this store half a dozen times over the past 7 or 8 months, initially having been recommended by someone. They do have pretty good prices, especially compared to bigger chain stores such as Petco and PetSmart, and they also have some fish that you can't necessarily find in those other stores. I dropped by recently to pick up some fish and ghost shrimp (10 of them) for my aquarium. By the time I got home that day, half of my ghost shrimp were dead, and by the next day, all of them were dead. Yes, ghost shrimp are cheap, and some may not live very long, but for sure they should last longer than just a few hours or one or two days. I've kept them before, and they will usually last at least a few weeks, in many cases several months, or even 1 or 2 years. I called and spoke with James (one of the managers there whom I've met many times), told him what happened, and asked if he would replace my ghost shrimp the next time I came to the store. His response was, "No, no, no! We don't replace those." I said, "They are only worth a few dollars, and they were obviously unhealthy and died right away. I've spent hundreds of dollars in this store, so can you just replace them for me as a courtesy?" Again, "No, these shrimp are cheap, are sometimes used as feeders. Why would we replace them for you? You also need to check your water parameters (i.e. blaming me and my tank/water for them dying; keep in mind that half of them died before even entering my tank)." I said, "I do often check my parameters. They are fine, and my other fish and shrimp are doing just fine." And I asked again nicely, "Hey, I've spent quite of money in your store, and all I'm asking is if you can replace a few dollars' worth of shrimp that were obviously unhealthy and died within a few hours. You are not willing to do that?" His response: "Yes, we don't replace those." His tone was as if saying, "How ridiculous is this that you're asking. Why would we ever do something like this?" So I said, "OK, fine." And then I got off the phone. Petco, where I've bought lots of equipment, fish, and supplies, would take care of this situation, no questions asked. I've also been to another local fish store that would replace fish or other aquarium pets if they died within hours or days - they did once for me on a fish that cost much more than the ghost shrimp. For this store to be willing to lose a loyal customer who has spent hundreds of dollars there within a few months, and who would have continued spending hundreds of dollars on them in the future, over some bad ghost shrimp they sold me that only cost a few dollars and died within a few hours, makes absolutely zero sense. Sure, this store has the right to refuse to replace the shrimp for me, but beyond this being unreasonable and unethical, it also makes no business sense for them, even in a selfish sense. I always try my best to support small and local businesses, but if this is how they want to conduct their business and treat their customers, then I am glad to - and on principle - take my business and money elsewhere. read more

So good! Happy that one of my friends told me about this place. Quite the diamond in the rough. There was plenty of parking, and so many choices of pets and supplies! I'm really into the fishkeeping hobby, so this place had so many good freshwater things. Fish, supplies, food, additives, plants, and decorations. The owner man, didn't catch his name, was very helpful and answered several of my questions. Good stock, I didn't see any dead fish. I mainly go here for their aquatic plants and freshwater fish. So far, I've gotten some guppies, siamese algae eaters, otocinclus, and many aquatic plants. This store also has a good variety of corydoras, shrimps, and fancy guppies! You should check out some of their HUGE corydoras (not for sale) in one of their tanks- it's so fascinating to see that corys can grow that big! In addition, I truly appreciate how friendly all of the people here are and how they are so knowledgeable and willing to help you. They will not pressure you to get certain plants or fish just to make sales. The tanks are clean and the quality of the plants is great! Btw, they also carry some UNS tanks as well! Parking can be a bit tricky because they share a small parking lot with a few other stores in the same area, but at least it's free! read more

FISH LICE AND TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE: I went in several weeks ago because they were one of the few stores that carried fancy goldfish. I purchased 3 orandas and took them home and put them into a brand new tank that I had been cycling for 6 weeks. The tank was fully cycled before I put them in (I'm a very experienced fish keeper and have been in the hobby for years). Within a week one of the orandas starting getting red spots so I separated it into a quarantine tank. I know that fish can sometimes get sick within the first month of "coming home" since the stress can lead to a lowered immune system. My first thought was that it was an internal infection (septicemia?) so I started treating it with an antibiotic trio (the water is a bit yellow in the pictures since the nitrofurazone yellow colors the water). I also added aquarium salt and increased the temperature. Plus I made sure to mix the medication into the food which is faster way to get the antibiotics into their system. The fish showed no improvement during the first 7 days so I went to the pet store and spoke to Jims (not sure if that's the spelling of his name). I told him everything I was doing and he told me I was doing everything right and that he had nothing else to add. I know that antibiotics can take 10-14 days to fully work so I figured I simply needed to continue treatment. A few days after, the other 2 orandas in the main tank started showing red spots and then I noticed that there were little white spots in straight lines on the aquarium glass and immediately realized they were fish lice eggs (argulus)! Yikes! So I basically put the first fish through an intense antibiotic treatment that was totally unnecessary and useless. I called the store and spoke to Jesse and he told me that there was nothing that I could do except to PICK OFF THE LICE BY HAND--he didn't give me any treatment options and didn't explain to me any other options as a customer (full/partial refund, exchanges, returns, etc.). I told him that was terrible advice because that wouldn't take care of the eggs or any juveniles that weren't visible to the naked eye. He said he had no other advice other than to manually remove the ones I could see. I asked him if he knew they had a lice outbreak and he stayed quiet for a really long time. I insisted that he tell me the truth because I needed to know exactly what was wrong with my fish so I could treat them properly. He then admitted that he had seen "one or two lice" in the store aquariums which he had been picking off of them. I explained it was incredibly irresponsible to be selling sick fish and that I had 3 other aquariums that I could have spread them to (luckily, I know all about quarantining and also use separate equipment for the quarantine tank so as to not cross-contaminate). I hung up and called my other trusted fish store (Bob's Tropical Fish) and they immediately provided me with several treatments even though they weren't the ones to sell me the fish. Knowing now what was actually wrong with my fish, I spent the evening literally "picking" lice off of all 3 orandas. In total, I got about 75 lice!!!!! I put them all in a container and went to the store the next day. Jims was there and I showed him the lice and told him about my conversation with Jesse. I told him I was really upset about the whole thing, all the time (and money) I'd spent on trying to treat the first fish (for the WRONG disease) and that I hadn't been given any good advice, that Jesse had admitted he knew they had a lice problem and that I hadn't been given any "customer service" options. He tried to talk around in circles and didn't provide any additional help. After a while of insisting that something needed to be done, he said he would speak with the owner and that someone would call me with options. He took my name and phone number down and that was 5 days ago, Wednesday (March 15) and, not surprising, no one has called me back. AVOID THIS PLACE COMPLETELY--AWFUL FISH STORE AND AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE. I hope this is hopeful for anyone who has recently purchased goldfish from them and they are showing red spots. You need to treat for argulus (fish lice). read more

Great selection of fishes and knowledgeable staff. I can't tell you how important it is that they know their stuff. Ask them anything about the fishes, whether it's a community fish, territorial fish, what type of food to feed, best temperature, etc and they'll tell you all about it! Not to mention the prices here are the best in the LA area. For example, I just purchased some ghost shrimp $0.39 and ghost catfish $8.99 from PetSmart two weeks ago. They sell the ghost shrimp here 5/$1 and ghost catfish is $3.99. This was my 2nd visit and I'm more than thrilled with my purchases: * Green spotted puffer fish $2.99 * small guppies $0.99/each * Ghost shrimp 5/$1 * Yoyo loach $5.99 * Bubbler regulator valve $0.25/each * small water pump for my 3 gallon fish tank $9.99 * freeze dried blood worms 0.42oz for puffer fish $8.99 It's clean, well kept, no dead fishes floating around. They also carry lots of aquatic plants as well and saltwater fishes. The only downside is that their parking lot is small, shared with 6+ other businesses so it's hard to find parking. A hidden gem!! Amazing prices and large amounts of inventory! I found this shop through Yelp and it was so close in distance that we decided to consider it. Upon reading reviews, we wanted to go check it out in person. The parking lot is small so be prepared to park on the street if you don't get lucky. But don't be discouraged! It's well worth it. We entered and at first got a bit overwhelmed because they had lots of supplies! I asked the employee, Jesse, where all the Bettas were and he showed me and also informed me they had wild bettas. My little ones came with us so they were excited and was a bit chaotic but Jesse was so amazing being patient and even called them over to watch him feed live worms to the frogs! The kids loved the experience and calmed down after watching Jesse take care of all the reptiles. It's also super calming walking through the aisles of fish tanks and plants! Both tropical and salt water, from ghost shrimps to huuuuuge fishes! The sound of the bubbling tanks and the fishes noticing you and following your movements through the tanks, I wanted to stay there much longer. We ended up choosing a male betta and the kids named him bluey. He's thriving in his tank alongside another tank with our betta from the OC Fair. Thanks Jesse!!! Really good, family owned store that is well stocked with high quality fish. I specifically come here for the Betta fish. Hands down the best collection of Bettas I have seen at a pet store. Typically you would have to import or buy offline, which is nerve wracking and something I'm not willing to do. Decent choice of aquatic plants Downside parking is a lil hit and miss so come earlier in the day. Also wish they carried more specialty products in store. ..... still worth the trip. This place is great they are very friendly and are always ready to help. They have a variety of freshwater/saltwater fish as well as plants and other aquatic life. They do also carry reptiles, birds, and rodents which is super cool. I've bought all my fish from here and even got a baby Koi Betta! When I go there usually isn't many people and I'm able to point out exactly which fish I want! When my tank was infected with ick the owner pointed me to the best medication and it cured my fish. Also you can tell they really care as if they see anything wrong with the fish while they bag it or within the tank they won't sell and let you know about it. I appreciate the honesty and how clean they are keeping. Now during COVID times you have to put on hand sanitizer before you enter the store which they provide! This pet store is unusual in that it has a very good supply of relatively difficult-to-find aquarium plants, fish, and invertebrates, along with other pets like birds, small furry mammals, and reptiles. Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and their livestock and plants were quite healthy when I visited. It was the 90's and I lived by here like one block away! I've purchased fishes, fish food, fish supplies, a guinea pig from here. It's amazing to see this place still up and running! The funny thing is is that I have seen different owner's and the outer appearance of the store never changes. Given, I haven't been inside here since the 2000 something. I've never mingled with the employee's, sometimes I get the one's who don't smile, but that's fine, working in retail sucks, I know. Anyways, before I kick the bucket I want to revisit this place.
