A few friends and I came here for dinner and some drinks and it did not disappoint. We started with some apps of mozz sticks and stuffed mushrooms. They both were soo tasty!! DELICIOUS!!! This was not my first visit & it won't be my last. Great family friendly restaurant. Let's just start with the bread basket, the bread was nice & warm, with GARLIC KNOTS not overly cheesy or greasy. My husband started with the BAKED CLAMS, big portion & extremely flavorful. My go to is usually MEAT LASAGNAS the best I ever had. I asked for very little sauce, but was full of meat & very flavorful cheese. He got SHRIMP SCAMPI over LINGUINE he loved it. Every time I order from this place I regret it. After receiving a wrong item in my pick up I called just to let them know. After briefly explaining the situation to the girl who answered the phone she puts me on a brief hold. I assume the manager gets on the phone and responds, "whats wrong with the food" in his arrogant tone. I worked in a Italian Restaurant for 10 years and would never pick up the phone and say that. He continues on with his attitude to a point where I just hang up on him. I will never go there again. I can go anywhere in St James and get over priced mediocre Italian food. read more

Pizza was okay. Child spaghetti and meatball servings were ridiculously small for the price. Layout was crowded and noisy. For half the price we could have eaten at our favorite neighborhood pizzeria and the food would have been better. Update: changed from three to two stars. My husband and I ate Sicilian pizza, which is an Italian favorite of our family and frequently eaten. We experienced the worst heartburn of our lives that lasted until five in the morning. Also, we had to ask for napkins three times before someone brought them so my five year old could wipe our face. From the server who comped an attitude the minute we walked in saying that the table we wanted to sit at was reserved, the previously ordered entrees that were subpar (not the same chef as other times we could tell), the manager who sided with the server nor apologize for the subpar dishes when we were repeat customers and had to go elsewhere to eat ( customer service 101- the customer is always right) we will not only never return but have a good friend in restaurant business for 50 years and not acceptable what the manager did. Beautiful decor, great background music (at a normal level), great service, relaxing setting. My fiancé and I tried their restaurant portion the other evening and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the restaurant. Upon walking in we were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress was very sweet and willing to swap drinks out of we didn't like it at no extra charge. The meals were unbelievable. Being Italian I judge pretty hard on what people call "Italian food" and I have to say it was not a disappointment. Even the following day when reheating the meals (veal parm and penne alla vodka) you can tell the restaurant used many natural ingredients not short cuts substitutes as the penne was not greasy and still had its full taste as if it was made fresh. The portion sizes are large and the best pet is you can order sides of pastas which can serve as a meal with an order of a salad or soup. Veal parm was to die for. Thinly sliced, breaded and baked to perfection. The sauce and cheese were just like grandmas recipe. Penne alla vodka was one of the best recipes I've had yet. The sauce was creamy, chunky and spices were perfect with the bits of prosciutto chunks mixed in it. Greek salad was amazing because of the feta cheese. The feta was so fresh and heavenly. Even the next day the salad wasn't soggy and gross. The red sangria I highly recommend- it's certainly strong but very yummy! I think the 2.5 star average rating is about right for Sputino. If I had the option to rate it that way, I would. But I think I have some constructive criticism for this place that may be helpful, so I'm glad to see the owners are actively checking Yelp reviews. My first impression is that the bar was small. Not much can be done about that, they did okay with the space and the stools were very comfortable, and it was a nice place to sit. The wine list is something that could use some work, it is very reminiscent of the type of list you'd see in your typical casual restaurant. Now, don't get me wrong, I think it's great that there are plenty of $22 to $30 bottles to choose from, but I am typically in search of something a bit nicer than what is on the list. I think adding some medium-level priced wines, particularly Italian blends (maybe a $35 to $45 barbera or valpolicella) would be good, and perhaps a $50-$60 California premium cab or blend (like an Orin Swift) and maybe a $40-$50 Long Island Red. When we sat for dinner, we ordered a tossed salad to start. Portion was decently sized, vegetables were fresh, the dressing was explained as "italian-style" which we figured would be EVOO and Vinegar based but instead was balsamic vinagrette (it was good either way). For an appetizer, we ordered eggplant rollatini, which I'm hyper-critical of everywhere I go, for the $9.25 I think it was a bit small (compared to, say Ciro's Kings Park where you pay a dollar more but get 3 rollatinis that are each much larger). The eggplant was a bit rubbery, which in my experience comes from being a little undercooked or perhaps from underripe eggplant. It wasn't the worst I've ever had though, the sauce was good and the ricotta filling was creamy. We ordered two pizzas, and both of which could have been great with some slight changes to how they were prepped. The Fra Diavolo - I agree with another Yelp writer that it appears to just be a marianara sauce with crushed red pepper flakes added to it and cherry peppers for spice. Right down the road, they would buy the Fra Diavolo from Uncle G's and use that sauce, or make their own in house. Also - either way they make it (marianara or real fra diavolo), they should strain the sauce in a cheese cloth to remove some of the moisture. The pizza was soggy in the middle and had to be fork eaten. I actually enjoyed it better as a leftover the next day, when I re-heated it in my oven on a pizza stone and the bottom got crisped. The other pizza was the prosciutto and arugula. Arugula is an ingredient I use in home pizza making all the time and it's a GREAT add-on to pizza, and my suggestion for Sputino is to add the arugula to the pizza earlier in the process so it wilts a bit. At home, I would assemble my pizza, get the meat and cheese on it immediately, and add the arugula when there is about 5 minutes of cook time left. At Sputino, our pie's arugula was definitely added on top after removal, as was the cheese blend (except for the mozz, that was added early and melted). In terms of service, everything was excellent. The hostess, bartender, wait staff, bussers, everybody was extremely professional and friendly. Food came out quick, the orders were correct, my glass of water was always filled. In summary, I think Sputino is suffering a bit from an identity crisis - hanging out somewhere between casual Italian dining (which there is already plenty of on Long Island) and a trendy brick-oven pizza spot (which we would use more of, if executed properly). The prices are certainly reasonable, the staff is great and both the food and ambiance have potential. I think I'll give it another shot in the future to see what else they have in store for us, and I'll re-evaluate. read more

My wife is a pastry chef and I'm a chef, met in culinary school and now we live 3 mins away and proud to say we have our pizza night with Spuntino. Not just great food - the Service and attitude of the staff is outstanding. Friendly and PROMPT on the phone. Quick delivery! And For me, how a restaurant handles service recovery (Outback #1) is the DNA of a restaurant. Eat somewhere 30 times something is bound to happen. A delivery person opening the heated bag inadvertently dropped a tin platter with zucchini sticks, let's say the sticks were tossed in dipping sauce. Not awesome but no big deal. Next visit Mike told me to call, have any delivery 100% fixed - he guaranteed everything to be the highest quality dine in, out, or delivery. We've enjoyed their Lasagna, Eggplant Parmigiana, Rice Balls and Brocolli Rabe (as a side dish). Most disappointing part is I ordered delivery the person taking the order didn't forget to charge me for the drinks but they did forget to deliver it. So I ended up going to the store to buy soda which defeated the purpose of this whole transaction. I just worked 12 hrs and didn't want to leave house again. This is a new addition to the St James area. The restaurant is located in a free standing building across from 7-11/Del Fuego. They have a rather large menu that includes brick oven pizza, and many other italian entrees. We ordered some beers from their taps. They include Peroni, Shocktop and I think it was Sam Adams Ocktoberfest. The beer was was clean tasting and crisp as it is probably coming out of brand new lines. The tables are rather close to each other kinda like places in the city. We ordered "Arancini Al Forno" as an appetizer but it does not really lend itself well to an appetizer. It is essentially a baked dish with rice balls deeply in there so it is difficult to share. Since this place bills itself as a "Brick oven pizza" place we got pizzas. I am pleased to say that it really is a brick oven pizza place. Plenty of places have their gas oven surrounded with a brick facade and call it brick oven. Yes all pizza ovens do have bricks in them too, but I consider brick oven pizza to be a very hot wood or coal fired oven. So yes the pizza was brick oven style and it was OK. I must say I prefer the pizza at The Pie in Port Jefferson but this place is pretty good as well. I just think that their oven does not get as hot as the crust is not as light and crispy as places like The Pie and Pepe's with their coal fired ovens. Small personal style pies are $12.75 which is more costly than The Pie, and for about 1.25 more I can get a 18" pie at my local pizzeria. Will be back, and a good addition to the area. read more

Go-to pizza place in St. James/ Stony Brook. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with Spuntino's food. All the pizzas are great, and the brick oven specialty pizzettes are insane. Chicken Crust, Toscano and Insalata especially. We mostly do takeout, but the few times we've sat inside have been great as well. Chicken Pinocchio and the Penne Vodka are family favorites for sit-down. Calamari is always fresh too. I've had several dreams about the meatballs. read more

Took the family there yesterday for a very late lunch\ early dinner. I had the eggplant parm and it was delicious. My wife and son each had pasta dishes which were also very good. I came here with my family on a week night. The place was empty. Long story short, we will not be coming back and we would not recommend this restaurant. Food: We ordered caesar salad and thai calamari for apps. The salad was fine, but the calamari was not the best. We then ordered two pizzas. Margarita and a Fra Diavolo, which is a spicy pizza. The margarita was nothing special. The Fra Diavolo was just the margaita pizza with some sausage and peppers put on top. The Fra Diavolo actually reminded us of pizza from Chucky Cheese. Service: We did not have a good experience with the service here.First we ordered wine. The food came out before the wine. The waitress totally forgot and did not even notice we had no drinks. A server handed us someone else's takeout in the middle of the meal. Then the waitress forgot to put in the order for our second pizza, so we had to wait. This weekend my husband and I tried Spuntino - St. James for the first time, but it won't be our last. Not only did they offer pizzas and your traditional Italian fare, they also had unique items on the menu, which of course we had to try. How often do you find baby artichokes battered, fried, and smothered in Francese sauce? Or "Pinocchio Chicken", which was chicken covered in a Marsala sauce with the perfect addition of caramelized onions and a touch of cream to take it over the top. I will never step foot in this restaurant ever... my 1st time and last...from the stoic faced hostess and her lack of timing, and lack of hostess experience said our wait was 25 minutes, reasonable for a Saturday night....1 hour later we were still standing at the cold doorway like idiots....we were a party of 5... but not 1 table that could be converted to a table of 5 was placed in the correct location of the restuarant. They would not let us sit in a booth, we were told we were "not allowed"... The hostess did nothing to keep us apprised of the extended wait or how and when we could be accomodated...so I will just end on this note... This is probably one of my least favorite Italian restaurants now me and my boyfriend were out for dinner and our food and waitress service was awful we felt very rushed and unwanted when we were eating our dinner so we didn't leave the greatest tip but we did leave a tip after we left the waitress chased us out of Spuntino literally chased and started aggressively questioning me and my boyfriend on why we didn't give her a "good enough tip". My boyfriend felt bad so he gave her a couple more dollars. Afterword he realized he left his wallet in SpunTino when he went back to grab his wallet the manager started screaming at him for not tipping his waitress enough ridiculous!!!!! overall the food there was not excellent but ok I am just very disappointed in the way me and my boyfriend were treated. My family has been ordering in from Spuntinos for years. We can't resist the convenience of delivery when having a family of 5. Prior to this past year, food was consistently tasty and fairly priced. In the past twelve months something has changed. The food quality has been poor and prices have gone up and now unreasonable considering. Pizza has been way over cooked, clam sauce was rubbery, and takeout orders often get mixed up. When frustrated, we call and complain (but not always). When we do, they credit or replace food as they should as a good establishment. I think we're hanging it up. This past week food was below par (again) and its starting to outweigh the convenience. We're off to look for another Italian restaurant that delivers. read more

My parents live in Dix Hills and I started frequenting the Sputinos there once they moved. Fortunately, being that my wife and I live in Smithtown, we were happy to see another Sputinos open that was much closer to us. We love the pizzettes (good value and very tasty) and the appetizers (mozzarella fritta (?) and calamari are great). I recently tried the special calamari ranch pizzette and it was amazing. I took the other half home and was eagerly anticipating finishing it! Hopefully that gets added to the menu because, like I said, it was amazing! Kudos to you folks... The staff is friendly and the food is excellent. Hopefully on busier days you'll eventually have somewhere to sit down to wait (outside of the bar area). Food and service here are excellent. We reserved a table for a large (13) party for a birthday, and everything was perfect. The food was fantastic. Our server, Joe, was attentive, knowledgable and friendly. They even cut and served a cake we brought ourselves for a small fee. It couldn't have gone better. read more
