I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. This was the go-to place for my family as I was growing up since I lived across the bridge in Point Pleasant. The food is almost always good. I think I had food poisoning from something I ate once, but since I've eaten here countless times throughout my life with nothing but good food served to me, I don't even think twice about going back and I have. I even came here the day I got my braces on when I was 12 and I just remember being miserable because I was in so much pain I couldn't even eat my baked ziti. The service is always good too. My boyfriend and I love Italian food and love finding the hidden gems so when we came to the shore for a night we wanted to find one around here... well squan tavern did not disappoint! To start we had fried calamari and buffalo shrimp and they were great! For our meals I had the eggplant rolletini and my boyfriend got the veal Marsala. They were both delicious. The portions weren't overly big which was nice since they give a salad to start a bread basket and side of pasta. The place is very cute and family friendly but also nice to go to as a couple for a good meal and some wine. The pizzas must have been to die for as everyone was ordering them and the place had a line out the door for pickups! I would definitely recommend this place! Today I had dinner at the Squan Restaurant. After hearing so much about the food I decided to take my family there for dinner. Well to say the least I was very disappointed . I ordered the mussels which most of the shells empty and the remaining ones were very small. The Clams Casino were just horrible . Two out of three dinner were marginal. I am sorry to say but I was extremely disappointed not only with the food but also with the waitress who seemed to be annoyed with everything..Another thing that I was not happy about was that I ordered a drink and felt that it was watered down..just saying..finally I felt that $140.. for a dinners that were less then superior. read more

Been coming to this place for years! Excellent family run business that has been around forever. Staff is always top notch and so is the food. Great meatballs, pasta, meat sauces,and pizza, all of which is available for take-out. If you want a good view of TVs, youre going to have to sit at the bar or the bar dining tables as the back dining room has no TVs or view of the bar. Parking in their lot can be a bit tough if it's crowded but street parking is abundant. read more

Wasn't coming into this place with much expectation but was very pleasantly surprised by absolutely delicious pizza done my way, with hot cherry peppers mushrooms and onions, then the parmesan chicken wings were absolutely delicious, the sauce was dippable. So disappointing. This longstanding Manasquan tradition has a horrid kitchen. 7 for dinner. Pizza for 3 came out without toppings. Server said to give her 30 seconds. By the time she came back, 10 minutes later,4 of us had finished our dinner. The pizza now had a burnt crust as all they did was put the toppings on and reheat. The awful part was the unapologetic attitude of Joe, manager. He said that it takes time to correct a wrong order and he's been making pizzas for 40 years and a crispy crust is great (it was black). Overall, the worst service. After waiting 45 minutes for the main course, the pasta and seafood came out cold and mushy. Truly the worst experience and the server couldn't be bothered to even come over to give us our check. I've heard such good things about the Squan Tavern but this was inexcusably terrible. read more

Had our annual pizza and beer day at Squan on the Friday after Thanksgiving. We started doing this many years ago and it has turned into a wonderful tradition in my family. Sometimes we've had close to 20 people but this year we had 8 adults and a toddler. Most years we've gone to Squan and if you enjoy thin crust pizza this is the place to go. The tap beer selection is good with some local breweries on the list and the service was friendly and prompt. We'll be back next year. read more

Fun time with friends. My friend lives within walking distance so we thought it was worth a shot had not been there for some time but it was a fun time. This place is high up on my Italian restaurant list. Great pizza and any other food you would want to order. As another yelper put it, "don't fret (garlic) is prevalent here" and that makes the food that much better. Pizza is my usual order but I love the eggplant parmigiana and the meatballs are always tender and flavorful. Everything here is good and I've never had a bad meal. Salads are fresh and I'm a fan of the bleu cheese dressing. Desserts are just as yummy as the main courses. This place can get busy busy and crowded so be prepared to wait if you come on a weekend evening. Amazing food and nice people make it worth the wait. read more

Have been going to Squan for 30+ years but the last two times we have been here in the past few months we have been very disappointed. The same dishes are much smaller is size, and the quality of as good. The eggplant parm was just a slab on the plate. We kept going here because the food has always been consistently good....I don't know what has happened....we are very sad. read more

I was disappointed by my dinner here. My soup and pasta were flavorless. My bread was good. The pasta portion was pretty large. The place was very noisy. It was pretty costly as well. The pasta special was $16 (there was no meat or seafood in it). They used to have a good reputation in the area but they didn't live up to it. read more

My family and I have been coming here since I was a kid 25+ years!! I moved to Florida about 8 years ago but every time I come to Jersey I have to come to Squan Tavern, it's a family tradition. The food is fantastic my favorite app is the pesto fried calamari and my all time favorite meal is gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream sauce. I even see the same waitress that took care of us as a kid still working here. If your in the area it's a must!!! read more

Dined here based on a coworker suggestion. There was a large group of us and we were seated quickly. The staff was friendly. The food was disappointing. Ordered a chicken pesto pizza. It was very lacking in flavor and substance. Others ordered a meat pizza and it looked a bit better. Overall we had a decent experience but the food was lacking. This has been on our list of places to try for many years (too many, in fact), and we finally went this past weekend for late afternoon drinks and some food. We sat at the bar which was tended very nicely by the bartender, and the drinks were great. We wanted to order some food, and were told that a waitress needed to be called over...mmm, ok. So, a waitress was beckoned and we placed our two app order...buffalo shrimp and eggplant rolletini. Both turned out excellent and bodes well for their other food options. The bar vs food thing is really really odd. I travel a lot and my wife and I go out a lot (several times a week), and almost always sit at bars to drink and eat. I have never had to separately order food when sitting at a bar, unless is was a bar that had no food but had nearby food trucks. I'm talking hundreds of times I've sat at bars and eaten all on one bill ordering through the bartender. But at this place, I had two bills to pay, one for the bar and one for the food. Great lil spot in manasquan for Italian or pizza nice bar area but you need to get hear early. The fried calamari is excellent and the bufflo shrimp are banging. Great place for a first date or a night out family. The pizza is really good for southern jersey always a go to when you cant decide what to have for dinner. I have been eating at Squan Tavern off and on for 40+ years. I'm giving them three stars over two because their pizza is still great. However, This past weekend (Oct 9) I went with a party of 15 and had a much different experience. I made reservations in advance. I wasn't the first one in my party to arrive, and one of the members of my party said "we're over there" pointing to a large table. I assumed that meant the host/hostess already knew we were there. It turns out they didn't - which isn't their fault, but I felt attitude from the staff from an honest mistake on my part. Second, they were irritated that some in my party bowed out of dinner, meaning we had empty seats and they had to take away a table they had put together for us. Next, the waitress was obviously perturbed that we asked for separate checks. I get it, separate checks can cause extra work for the waitress, but I was sure to inform her of this BEFORE she even took our drink orders so she was well prepared beforehand. Then, our food took 90 minutes to arrive. We ordered a combination of pizza and pasta. Of everyone's meal the pizza was the only thing that got positive reviews. My chicken parm wasn't very hot (temperature) and just wasn't worth the $20 they charged for it. I'll be going elsewhere for Italian in Manasquan, it's a shame Maria's has gone down hill as well. read more

It's 12/28/2017 as I write this.Life has taken me to a new marriage as of 2007 and Springfield,NJ. I am still a regular there with the new Mrs. The Bossones? Love this place! Pizza great for carryout. Ask for your salad dressing on the side, they tend to be too generous with the ladle. Good, old time Italian in a family atmosphere. Drinks a bit pricey. You will have to wait in the summer, even on a Tuesday night They are fussy if you are dressed to "beachy", so cover up a bit. One thing I like about it is that the Squan doesn't change--I always know that the tvs in the bar will be featuring local pro baseball, the picatta will be good, the meatballs are terrific and the eggplant parm will always be done just right. read more

Not bad but so much quality competition around they need to step it up. Great pizza but leave the seafood for another place. Clams oregonata are just stuffed clams and while the white clam sauce is good the clams themselves were big chewy and nasty. After many years I would say it used to be better. Boy , where do I begin .... To give some context, my wife is English and I'm happy to go to the Olive Garden rather than eat her Italian food. We also had a trip early this year to Italy where we experienced some amazing Italian meals so my awareness of good Italian food has gone up dramatically this year. That being said, our meals this evening was just awful. Obviously I didn't expect home cooked pasta but what we got was bland, barely hot and cover with the most awful, insipid tasting sauces. The cream sauce on my daughters tortellini tasted of flour and cream with a hint of "Christmas spices" as she put it. It's an old tavern , a local hang out, not a high class spot, but regardless of price I expected a bit more. Stick with the pizza. My memory of that from several years ago was that it was good. I can't fault the waitress who was very pleasant. I'm being generous with two stars for the food. read more

Not a huge fan on the pizza you find in the little mom and pop restaurants at the beach but, this place has got their pizza down! It's also this crust, which I don't particularly fancy when looking for pizza, but theirs is unreal! The dough has got ridiculously amazing flavor, there's something about it!
