The food was unimaginative. A salad was to was an apple whiskey vinaigrette dressing, but the dressing did not taste of apples or whiskey. I'm not sure how they missed the mark. The service overall was fair. Initially, attentive. Then our food brought by another server. We did see our server again until time for the check.

Tucked away and totally delicious! My husband and I came here for the first time to have dinner with his advisor and it was excellent! The patio area is spacious and has a lovely water wall feature (the space is dog friendly as well!). The service was very friendly and attentive as well. So much of their menu includes house made bonuses like their buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, and Gorgonzola dressing which we had with the vegetarian drumsticks (friend cauliflower with made in house breading!). Everything we ate was flavorful and HUGE! It was awesome since we got to take leftovers and eat the tasty food the next day! I had a fantastic salmon and my husband had the fried chicken sandwich - both of which were delicious! I am super pumped to have come here and will be back with more friends and family soon!

Take a walk in Lafayette Park then head on over to this brewery/restaurant. Enjoy the old building atmosphere in its spacious rooms around the bar or off dining area. Service was great . Enjoyed brunch with some unique takes on small and large plates, and, truly, large plates!

We went for a date night and it was a great time. The food was great! My husband got a shrimp and grits and a beer flight. I got a sandwich and a sangria.

We were staying in the Lafayette Square section of St. Louis over the summer and decided to try Square One since we could walk there. It was early so there weren't many people in the dining room. There was a front bar that had quite a few people. I liked that the building is historic. It made for a nice vibe. Service was on point, we didn't have to wait long for our drinks then food to come out. I had a lovely stout, which i thoroughly enjoyed. The star of the meal for me was the steak and frites. The steak was huge and cooked perfectly! It was juicy and topped with melted garlic butter. Delectable! I ate every last bite. My husband got the burger and he really enjoyed it. If I lived nearby I'd definitely be a regular!

Located in historic Lafayette Square, this is a classic "Old School" bar serving delicious drinks and meals with both indoor and outdoor seating. They are listed as both a brewery and distillery but we only tried their spirits. They make their own whiskeys, gins, vodkas ,run and agave. We decided to try to a flight...Urban bourbon, blueberry bourbon, strawberry basil gin and Vermont night liquor. The bourbons were very light and easy drinking. I did not taste much blueberry. My wife loved the strawberry basil infused gin. The Vermont Night liqueur was my least favorite. Whiskey infused with citrus zest, winter spices and vanilla sweetened with maple syrup. Way too many flavors plus the spices took over . It was a shame we had just eaten as their food menu looked amazing. I would like to try their beers if I'm ever in the area again. If you love historic buildings as this place was built in 1883 and love crafted beers and spirits, this is definitely a place worth visiting.

Square One is such a great spot. The interior has that warm, classic pub feel, and there's a great outdoor patio. I came with a few coworkers for happy hour and we all loved the atmosphere. Their beer selection is excellent and they also distill their own spirits. I didn't order food this time, but everything I saw looked really good. Definitely a good stop if you're in the neighborhood!

When my wife invited me to meet her in St. Louis for the first time, the first spot we stopped at was Square One. We sat there for hours as I enjoyed a few of their beers and she sipped vodka. It's been a favorite place for us to visit when we come in town since then. We have been for brunch and drinks here and there, but this time was our first lunch. The beer list is diverse and very good. I haven't had a bad one yet, and I've tried anything from IPAs to seasonals. The burger with BBQ also did not disappoint! The fries are some of the best I've had in STL. I did wish there were more of them, but it's probably best for me to not have an endless amount. Every time we have gone, the servers and bartenders have been attentive and friendly. We have gone in the middle of the afternoon and late at night, and always enjoyed the company. Usually we sit at the bar and make friends with fellow drinkers. The outside area for brunch is also very enjoyable. It's one of my favorite patios when the weather is nice. There are many good establishments to visit at and around Lafayette Square. For a meal or a drink, I can't recommend this place enough.

Crabcake sliders and cheesy jalapeño grits

Love Square One! More than a brewery or distillery with a tap/tasting room, it's a full restaurant with a well-rounded menu. First off, they take reservations, so if you're going at a peak time get yourself on the list! Getting to Square One is easy by car. If street parking isn't readily available, head to the free lot across--wait for it--Park Avenue. They have bar seating (no reservations), several indoor rooms, and a lovely patio with plants and water features (not just tables on a parking lot or the sidewalk.) The indoor temp is always comfortable. I've been to Square One for brunch and for dinner and have always been happy with the food. For my last visit I had crabcake sliders (excellent!) and chose cheesy jalapeño grits for my side (rather dull; they didn't taste strongly of corn and had zero hot pepper kick--the only thing I've had here that's not 110%.) Salads have very generous piles of toppings, and the smash burger's great too. Finally, the drinks are fab! Square One makes a lot of good beers and spirits--and those are featured on the cocktail menu as well. You can't go wrong with anything featuring the JJ Neukomm Whiskey, agave, or gin. Cheers!

Popped into this spot after an event down the street. It was mid evening and we sat on the covered patio. It was a bit chilly out so this was a great way to get the best of both worlds. The restaurant filled up quick but the service didn't show it! Our server was attentive and patient with all of the commotion. I ordered an aperol spritz (I know I know I was at a brewery). It was fine but I think I'll stick with beer next time I'm at a brewery! :) I ordered "girl dinner" as they're calling it these days, a ceaser salad and an order of pub pretzels. Both of these were good! I love soft pub pretzels so this hit the spot, they were served with cheese and mustard. Looking forward to going back for sunny, warm patio time!

The perfect place to spend a sunny day. Their patio is lovely, service is attentive, food is delicious, and the beer is great! Definitely my favorite spot in Lafayette Square.

We came for cocktails and it was pretty empty, at least the bar area. They had a variety of liquor from cocktails to craft beers. The pricing for cocktails were great, about $10 for one. This is a score for us as we're used to California pricing of about $15-$20 for a cocktail. We got 2 cocktails. I got the strawberry fields and my friend got the Miss Peaches. Both were refreshing and not too sweet. Good place to stop by for some drinks before heading to dinner.

Would highly recommend, nice options for groups who have different drink preferences, they have a lot of non beer options! Food is really good as well, portions are pretty large so the price is very fair. Service has always been great and fast!

I met here with members of a local running group for one of their periodic pub runs. It was extremely cold when I got there, despite having been nearly 90 degrees out the day before. Several members of our group stood in the doorway, preventing other patrons from entering and exiting. Modern's staff deserves credit for not complaining or forcing them to leave. They may have sensed that this wasn't the local unhoused population. Only employed people run recreationally, despite having relatively little free time. I see this place all the time, from my car on the adjacent highway, on my way back to civilization, but I'd never had the occasion to stop by. Perhaps I'd be a regular if I attended the nearby community college. But if I could afford to eat here, why would I be attending community college? The beer will set you back. I would have been fine with a 32 oz can of Miller High Life, but when in Rome. There's an extensive selection of beers on tap, and probably even more in cans and bottles. I'm no connoisseur, and I don't have that kind of time, so I went with something called Silent Gs, or something to that effect. I justified it, in part, by telling myself that its name is a reference to the Lil Wayne bar adored by people who started listening to rap music in 2003. I paid $7.50-ish for a not particularly large serving, but damn it if it wasn't pretty good. I appreciate it anytime one of these higher gravity pale ales doesn't taste like it was sourced from a trough-style urinal at a circa '83 ballpark. A couple of girls from the aforementioned run group mentioned that this place carries a brussels spouts salad. I don't eat salad, because I'm a guy, but these girls are certified baddies, and I succumbed to the peer pressure. I attempted to mitigate the impact on my reputation by also ordering a slice of pepperoni pizza. I'm gonna have to have a difficult meeting with my accountant, as a result, but it was worth it. The entree serving of the salad would have been enough food, even without the pizza. It's enough vegetables that it's actually kinda obnoxious, like they're trolling you. Who do they think I am, a damn cow? Part of that may have been the brussels sprouts. They help give the salad a surprising heft, for something that doesn't have any meat in it, and help make up for the lack of bacon, which I generally require with brussels sprouts. The candied walnuts, which I thought might be croutons, were another delightful surprise and complemented the tang of the pickled red onions. The pizza came topped with an oddly precise-looking quantity and arrangement of pepperonis, like they might have Russell Crowe from the movie A Beautiful Mind working in the kitchen. It's not like at Domino's, where they just toss them on there and they might not even be on half the pizza. I guess they have to do that when they sell it by the slice. You'd be upset if you didn't get enough of them, because they're delicious. They're the kind that curl up into little cups filled with disgustingly unhealthy and yet delicious oil. I wonder if that's also because they serve it by the slice and hence have to reheat it. That may have resulted in the end of the crust suffering from a bit of Popeyes biscuit-like dryness, but what are you going to do. Then again, that may have been a purposeful attempt to get you to purchase more expensive beer. Everything else here was so well executed, it's hard to imagine this wasn't intentional on their part.

I came with my parents and husband and we all agreed it was a great idea and a very comfortable space, perfect for what was needed. I was surprised at how relatively ample the parking was here despite its proximity to the city. We found a spot with no problems. There were discreet signs that directed us up the stairs to where the event was held. It was spacious, airy, and cool, with a decent number of tables and a very nice large bar, as well as restrooms for both men and women. Our family members who spoke were able to stand on a small stage and share their thoughts. The food was served buffet style in front of the stage. Although you'd think it might be hard to hear given the acoustics, they worked out a way to make it so their speeches could be heard easily. Even visiting with other folks after they spoke, it never became too loud to hear each other. There are also nice TVs which displayed photos of the family. Although we used the space for a celebration of life, I can imagine it would be a good fit for all sorts of events, from corporate parties to just a chill hang out space when it's open to the public. It did get a little bit hot in the space as the event wore on, but it wasn't intolerable. The food and drinks were also quite tasty, especially for catered/buffet style food. There were pretzel bites and cheese dip and three different types of slider burgers: a standard/original burger, a taco burger, and an Impossible burger. The pretzel bites were crispy and buttery. I had a taco burger slider. It was a tiny bit dry but had a great flavor. The bartenders were great -- friendly, answering questions, working efficiently, and very kind to all the guests. Husband enjoyed the beers he tried and my mom and I both ordered the "Cranberry Crush," which was a yummy (and strong!) cocktail that was bright and perfectly sweet. They also serve mocktails, which I love! Glad to include folks who are sober. Thanks, 4 Hands, for creating a welcoming and comfortable space for us!
