We had a reservation on a Saturday night. We were greeted and seated right away. We're not fond of high top tables, but that's all that was available when I made the reservation. I only saw two high top tables for two people and they were in corners. So we sat in a corner on backless stools. Stools in restaurants should have backs!Pretty uncomfortable and we won't do that again. It also has really high ceilings so it got pretty loud in there. Our server was Erin and she was good! The place was packed inside and outside (in the rain - there were umbrellas over the tables) so the staff was super busy. She kept the drinks and food coming at a good pace. We started off with drinks and onion rings. We had been told how good the onion rings were so we had to order them - they lived up to the hype! I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband is. He had three different ones and didn't really enjoy any of them. He tried Tidewater Plains, Master of the Universe, and Batholith. I had a Jungleberg cocktail and liked it so much, I ordered another one. The server said they were out of them. There were five ingredients in the drink so I have no idea what they were out of. I ordered a Spicy Ancho Margarita and it was okay. It shouldn't be called spicy, because it is not. I ordered Chicken Wings and Onion Soup. Yes, it was summer. What a great place! The vibes here were wondeful. My friend and I sat at the bar and watched some of a World Cup game while enjoying beers and the bean dip app. We loved the beers - I believe we both ended up with Sunblind after asking for samples of two we couldn't pick between. There were so many options that looked appealing. We split the bean dip appetizer which was super flavorful and fresh. Do wish there were a few more toasts to spread the dip on but the veggies also made for good dippers. Prices were decent and the happy hour looks like a good thing to check out with $5 drafts. Went to Perennial on Lockwood to treat my two interns after a semester of hard work and we had a great time. I chose this place because of recommendations from friends for it being accessibility friendly which I can confirm. One of my interns utilizes a wheelchair and the inside was very easy for him to navigate, their staff more often than not opens the door for you which was an appreciated convenience, and the restrooms have transfer bars which are very helpful. I also appreciate how it is a low-stimulation atmosphere, the lights are dimmed but not to the park of struggling to see and the music wasn't blasting. The staff were very kind, attentive, and accommodated to our needs! Only complaint is the food was a bit too salty which is a criticism I rarely have. Maybe it was the combo of the mac and cheese + French fries? Well seasoned to overly salty is a slippery slope. So...I just had the best dinner with my dad at this restaurant. We actually stumbled into this place solely because Olive + Oak didn't have any bar seats open for us, but honestly, I am so glad it happened that way! We were seated with our wonderful server, Nina (I believe). She was friendly, chatty, and very knowledgeable about the menu and restaurant itself. My dad and I started with drinks off the cocktail menu...I got a spicy marg (I don't remember the exact name), and he got a traditional margarita. My spicy marg was fabulous! It had a little heat, but it wasn't overwhelming. My dad unfortunately had a mix-up with his drink, but once we let Nina know, she happily made him the right one. It was also delicious! For food, we had the chicken wings, which were incredible!!!! They're crispy, spicy, delicious, and they will absolutely be devoured again someday soon. I came here with a large party of family members on a recent trip to St. Louis. Reading the other reviews, I can only come to the conclusion that we got very unlucky or came on a very odd night, because our experience was not very positive. I will say it's an attractive restaurant with comfortable furniture and a nice vibe. There's a large beautiful bar and a decent amount of seating. The acoustics are such that it does get very loud and it may be hard to hear other party members if you don't raise your voice. We came in a party of 8. My uncle who lives in the area made reservations for us and our table was ready when we arrived. About half the party sat in the booth and the other half was in chairs across the table. Given the size of our party, we covered a lot of ground on the menu. They have a nice beer and cocktail selection. I tried the strawberry mojito and it was tasty and packed a good punch. My mom had the sangria and liked it too. Husband was pleased with the beer he selected and had a couple by the end of the night. This was probably the highlight of the dining experience. Our waiter was a tall young man who really didn't seem to want to be there. In his defense, I honestly probably would've been a bit annoyed too - my aunt was definitely there to party and she razzed him a bit. But even before that happened, I just don't remember him smiling or engaging with our party much at all. At one point he even argued with my uncle about what he'd ordered. Our food (entrees in particular) was also rather slow to come out, though they were fairly busy. Underwhelming service, for sure. We got onion rings and their artichoke bean dip to share as appetizers. I don't like onion rings but my husband tried one and said it was good. The artichoke bean dip was okay but I wouldn't order it again. It was very acidic and overwhelmingly lemon-forward. The texture was hummus-ish but on the chunkier side. It was edible but I didn't love it. My mom and I both got the Cuban sandwich with fries. This was definitely the best thing that I tried/heard about food-wise but I'd still only rate it a 3/5. It was a huge portion and the fries were good, but the pickles were overwhelming both in flavor and in added moisture; the sandwich was wet quickly and I couldn't taste much pork, Gruyère, or even mustard. The pickle flavor was just so loud. Good pickles! But not the only thing I want to taste on a Cuban sandwich. My aunt got the house salad and added trout to it. She thought the trout was very overcooked and it did indeed look quite dry and cardboard-y. I was seated too far away from my two uncles and one of their dates, so I missed their orders. I think they were happier with their meals than we were on my side of the table, but I don't know for sure. My dad got the beer battered fish of the day with fries. It was not adequately explained to him that the fish of the day at our time of visit was catfish. He was expecting a fish that works in a fish and chips type of meal and catfish is definitely NOT it. It tasted muddy as catfish often tends to and he did not like it at all. I'm not enthusiastic about the idea of having a "fish of the day" being the go-to fish for a beer battered fish and chips vibe (as many fish, like CATFISH, may not work in that type of dish), but I'm not in charge. Lastly, my husband got the chicken pot pie. It was a very small serving for how high the price was and it was just straight up bad. No way around it. The crust was burnt and the inside was dry as a bone and seasoned with flavors I don't usually associate with chicken pot pie. The meat and other fillings were tinted orange and tasted weird (in addition to the burnt crust vibe). My husband is not a complainer (too shy and intimidated by the frosty service) and usually just eats whatever is put in front of him, even if it's not very good. He couldn't even eat this. A few bites and he was done. I tried it and can confirm it was really, really bad. All in all, a very disappointing visit, especially for my immediate family members. My uncle who took us here enjoys this place (hence the choice to come), so I can only guess we came on a very off night. Our server was really friendly and quick. She checked in on us often and gave some helpful recommendations. We ordered drinks and a couple of apps to share, and she left us a full bottle of cold water, which was such a nice touch. We got the pretzel monkey bread, french fries (the best) and the artichoke bean dip. We weren't planning to stay for dinner, just wanted some snacks. The food came out fast and honestly looked too good to wait on. I loved the monkey bread, the pretzel bites had a great crisp to them, and the sauces they served with it were really good. The bean dip was good too, just not as much my thing since I'm not a big fan of dill, so I left most of that for everyone else. If you judge a bar by its silverware, this place is the real deal! Solid and substantial. We started with a house salad and a bowl of the potato chowder. Both were made of high quality ingredients and tasted fresh. The salad was topped with seeds and croutons - a fabulous crunch. After sitting down, we were promptly given water and menus. It wasn't long after where our drink orders were taken - the right amount of time for us to review the menu without wondering where the waiter was. Part of me not liking this space as much as I want to is how loud it gets with it full of people. The floor and walls might have all been concrete or some hard surface which bounced the sound waves every which way. It made it difficult to have a conversation at a table against the wall at the far end of the room with a group of 7. We were all leaned in and having to play the telephone game to know what some on the other side of a neighbor said. It finally got quiet near the end of the evening (around 8). I also was disappointed in my food options. I loved my Brussels sprouts and sharing the marinated olives with my bestie. However, the blueberry & lemon cold soup had no citrus tang to it all, and it was an unpleasant bitterness. Unfortunately, the house salad was also bitter. I'm disappointed that a salad with so many ingredients didn't have some balance and flavor. I felt like my soup and salad selections were examples of a cook trying to get fired. Will I return? Maybe, leaning towards no. This is a place attempting upscale cuisine but has work to do. With one of the best patios on Lockwood, Perennial earns its spot with top notch food and drink. The food is elevated bar food with something for everyone. They pickle the tomatoes on the bruschetta adding a pleasant vinegar-y lift to the heavier cheese with bacon lardons but it's not so different that your picky eater friend might not like it. The bourbon peach iced tea is perfect, no notes. Can't remember the name of the second cocktail we tried but it was great too! The service was great. I'm going to call this a hidden gem. It was a challenge finding this place from the street! They are located right next door to Olive and Oak. They are all under the same restaurant group. I have always loved O&O, and knew I was in for a treat. The space is welcoming and warm. The patio offers plenty of seating. There are heaters when the weather is chilly. The inside space is fun and hip. There are two large community tables, a large bar, smaller tables and an event space. Our server Jess was fantastic. Attentive, but not overly so. Fun and energetic, she fit right in with our table. Helpful with the menu and made delicious suggestions. Let's start with the drinks, because why not? They offer a great variety house made beers. Our favorite was the "cool mom". There is a small wine list. The cocktail menu is concise with a selection of beautiful cocktails. The blackberry mint julep is amazing! Fresh and bright and refreshing. We started with a few appetizers. Pretzel monkey bread is a good choice for kids, and folks who don't like to branch out. We went with the white bean dip only because it includes Passenger chili crisp. If you haven't had this, I highly recommend. This is the best chili crisp I've ever had. Full of flavor with a nice heat. This elevated the bean dip making it an epic dish. It was light and bright, and warm from the crisp. The bruschetta is delicious. An interpretation I'd never had before. Kale, lardons, balsamic, along with the traditional ingredients. I'd recommend this one as well. For meals, we had the buffalo chicken sandwich, the Lockwood burger, and a house salad with the fish of the day. We also went with the aviator salad. This was also like nothing I've had before. It's an interpretation of Cesar salad with crispy capers, and shaved horseradish in the dressing. I could see where this wouldn't be for everyone. I really liked. It was beautiful out so people were enjoying their time on the patio so the tables weren't turning over quickly. 20 minutes after our reservation time we settled for a table outside by the front door with no air flow. We should have just sat inside at that point. Our server was prompt. We ordered drinks and a couple appetizers. ( wings and white bean dip, both were very good) I got the duck fat Chicago dog, it was delicious. It had a little kick to it and my fries were cooked to perfection. My husband got the Cuban. He could only eat half and was elated that he got to have it for lunch the next day. Drinks, food and service was impeccable. The server even took our apps off the bill because of the seating snafu. Great place for date night, dinner with friends and family or just grabbing a beer. read more
