I met up with a large group for a Thursday happy hour, and we needed a venue that would accommodate a large group. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is a free parking lot and a huge patio that, unfortunately I think, faces the highway.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are a few businesses around it but it feels rather industrial.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The location is convenient to Forest Park, the Medical Center and South City via Kingshighway or Hampton. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of seating both inside and on the patio.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was extremely hot outside so we were seated inside, in the "Garden Room." This room has lots of windows (no garden) and got extremely hot during the stay. I guess the AC couldn't keep up with us.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This is a brewery so they have lots of beer options. I can't speak to the quality of the beer. Since I have Celiac Disease, I checked ahead of time and made sure that I saw lots of wine on their drink menu as well. Since it was 4PM when I arrived, I asked about any happy hour specials. Sadly, they told me there were only beer happy hour specials, no wine specials. I ordered a glass of white wine from their menu and got what I thought was a small pour of an only so-so glass for the price. I did like that you order your drinks in a separate line, and you can pay as you go like I did or start a tab. This is great for a large group like ours. My first visit to Modern was in April and I've been back several times since! It's in a great, central location if STL, and a great spot to stop after a walk in forest park. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The patio outside is dog friendly, and there's a ton of seating for busy nights and big crowds.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You order inside and get a number. Their beers are listed on the wall and they have a delicious food menu. I love their pizza, it's always good every time I've gotten it. They also have some pretty tasty fries. Nothing impressed me and my friend. TMB is a card only business, they do not accept cash. Don't worry, they did not charge the card fee. So it's kinda like paying cash. When arriving at Modern Brewery, pick out your table before going up to the counter to order. MB is an order at counter establishment, so expect minimal service and you'll be fine. When your food is ready they'll bring it to your table, that is why you need to know your tables number before ordering. Once you've finished eating, the staff will bus your table. Delivery and bussing is the only service you'll receive. Lucky for me, I ordered a beer and was given it when I ordered it with my food. My friend unfortunately ordered a gin martini. I ordered a beer because when she ordered her martini, the staff behind the bar discussed loudly who was going to make it. Once it was made, she had to watch the bar to see it set aside and go pick it up herself. I know we were at a brewery, but I still was surprised that they served the martini in a small coupe glass and charged a premium price. Being a martini enthusiast, I am glad I did not order one, because I would have been majorly disappointed. My friend commented that it was not worth the, $14. The best thing about our food was the, Brussels Sprouts Salad. We each chose it as our side dish and it was the star of our meals. I easily could have made the side salad a meal. It was thinly sliced Brussels Sprouts, pickled red onion, goat cheese and candied walnuts with a lemon vinaigrette. This salad got two thumbs up from us. My friend ordered the, Double Cheeseburger and the meat was over cooked. It was over-cooked, cut like leather and was tough to chew. My Porchetta Pastrami was more bread then sandwich. I will say, the house pickles on it were, top notch and full of flavor.The focaccia bread was good, too. I took half of it home and unfortunately it did not do well as leftovers. The gentleman who took my friend's order was friendly and personable. However, the young lady who took mine and the other girl who ran orders and cleared tables, had the personality of a wet dishrag. The Charlie Murphy pizza was my favorite! The toppings tasted so fresh and it was perfectly cooked. I also really liked the bacon cheese fries, and I will be ordering that again. The wings didn't come with the sauce on it, so we had to pour it on, but it was still tasty. The Brussels sprouts were very fresh, but it was a lot in the bowl! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's hard to beat this place's location, if you want to run a few miles in the park across the street and then reverse any progress you may have made, and then some, by consuming copious quantities of beer, pizza and what have you[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I can confirm as much, having done so yesterday. I met here with members of a local running group for one of their periodic pub runs. It was extremely cold when I got there, despite having been nearly 90 degrees out the day before. Several members of our group stood in the doorway, preventing other patrons from entering and exiting. Modern's staff deserves credit for not complaining or forcing them to leave. They may have sensed that this wasn't the local unhoused population. Only employed people run recreationally, despite having relatively little free time. I see this place all the time, from my car on the adjacent highway, on my way back to civilization, but I'd never had the occasion to stop by. Perhaps I'd be a regular if I attended the nearby community college. But if I could afford to eat here, why would I be attending community college? The beer will set you back. I would have been fine with a 32 oz can of Miller High Life, but when in Rome. There's an extensive selection of beers on tap, and probably even more in cans and bottles. I'm no connoisseur, and I don't have that kind of time, so I went with something called Silent Gs, or something to that effect. I justified it, in part, by telling myself that its name is a reference to the Lil Wayne bar adored by people who started listening to rap music in 2003. I paid $7.50-ish for a not particularly large serving, but damn it if it wasn't pretty good. I appreciate it anytime one of these higher gravity pale ales doesn't taste like it was sourced from a trough-style urinal at a circa '83 ballpark. A couple of girls from the aforementioned run group mentioned that this place carries a brussels spouts salad. I don't eat salad, because I'm a guy, but these girls are certified baddies, and I succumbed to the peer pressure. I attempted to mitigate the impact on my reputation by also ordering a slice of pepperoni pizza. I'm gonna have to have a difficult meeting with my accountant, as a result, but it was worth it. The entree serving of the salad would have been enough food, even without the pizza. It's enough vegetables that it's actually kinda obnoxious, like they're trolling you. Who do they think I am, a damn cow? Part of that may have been the brussels sprouts. They help give the salad a surprising heft, for something that doesn't have any meat in it, and help make up for the lack of bacon, which I generally require with brussels sprouts. The candied walnuts, which I thought might be croutons, were another delightful surprise and complemented the tang of the pickled red onions. The pizza came topped with an oddly precise-looking quantity and arrangement of pepperonis, like they might have Russell Crowe from the movie A Beautiful Mind working in the kitchen. It's not like at Domino's, where they just toss them on there and they might not even be on half the pizza. I guess they have to do that when they sell it by the slice. You'd be upset if you didn't get enough of them, because they're delicious. They're the kind that curl up into little cups filled with disgustingly unhealthy and yet delicious oil. I wonder if that's also because they serve it by the slice and hence have to reheat it. That may have resulted in the end of the crust suffering from a bit of Popeyes biscuit-like dryness, but what are you going to do. Then again, that may have been a purposeful attempt to get you to purchase more expensive beer. Everything else here was so well executed, it's hard to imagine this wasn't intentional on their part. read more

Our order came out a bit "well done", but flavorful to eat. Plenty of other starter options to choose if this creative app is not your vibe. For Pizza, we ordered a Pepperoni, Mushroom and Pepperoncini whole pie. Served hot from the oven, this was excellent with uncured pepperoni, fresh shrooms and spicy Pepperoncini's; I like "hot & spicy", but should've eased up on how much crushed red pepper I added as Pepperoncini's already gave it a really nice kick!! The crust was good, but a bit heavier than NY thin crust; and for me, glad the cheese was not Provel blend but a generous portion of Mozzarella...my kinda melted gooey cheese atop a pie! Before going: Definitely allow yourself some extra time to find a table if you are meeting a group of people. It's a seat yourself establishment. Big groups are harder to seat if it's packed! The Charlie Murphy pizza is a must-order with the perfect balance of spices and bold flavor, and their barbacoa is insanely good. The sandwiches are served on the freshest, fluffiest focaccia-style bread that somehow manages to be both light and hearty at the same time. As a sour beer lover, I'm picky--and they absolutely nail it. Their sours are bright, balanced, and done really well. I've had modern brewery a few times but realized I've never written a review! It's usually really packed, so you mig hit need to try to go at odd times, but service has always been super quick, no matter how busy it is. The location is great and super open space, plus a nice patio! I haven't gotten beer here before but everyone I've gone with loves it. I've loved all the cocktails I tried too, especially the strawberry one! Fries are always delicious. The bacon cheese fries are some of my fav in St. Louis! I've also tired the barbacoa melt and the chicken sandwich (buffalo/spicy style). Went to Modern Brewery this week and I enjoyed enjoyed the food & atmosphere. I was surprised to see they had a special on crawfish handpies & the person at the register said they were good so I had to order it. She is right. It was good. Fresh, cooked perfectly to be crisp on the outside and warm/hot throughout. Not quite as good as in Mississippi or Louisiana but it was tasty. And perfect for lunch with a side salad. I got a Caesar and added bacon cause I'd heard the word. Was yummy. One of the folks had wings and fries, they looked awesome and she said they were great. Someone else had and loved the Bibb Salad with green goddess dressing. The only meal someone said was just ok was a slice she ordered. Everything came out really quickly. I find it kind of weird that I saw lots of large red cups that said Coke on them but ordering a Coke meant getting that cup with ice and a can. There is a full bar, a fountain drink would have made more sense and would have been more likely to fill the cup: I was there for a business lunch, a small group. We booked the small room at the side which was nice. We were asked to go to the counter to order rather than use the QR code for some reason. Only complaint on the space was it was freezing cold. I did bring a jacket though I hadn't needed it outside but the AC was insane. I would have moved, maybe to the patio but the work thing ya know. It perfectly suits meeting up with friends for a few beers or bites. Super cool place. Only complaint is holy cow, there were a million kids running around (I've noticed this recent trend- tons of kids at area breweries). The kids didn't bother me, but just a heads up in case you're one of those "get off my lawn" types. Also, we were there on a Saturday evening, and it was packed. It's seat yourself, so you might have to search for an open table. Food orders are at the counter. The line was long, but it moved really quickly. Food was outstanding. I had the schnitzel slider, hubs had the crab cake sandwich. For as crowded as the place was, the time to get the food was very reasonable. It was hot and absolutely delicious. The beer was also awesome. I had the Dessert Island Cherry Cordial (yes, dessert, not desert). OhmyLawd it was divine. Sadly they ran out before I could get a 2nd round of that. When they brought the food out to the table, they didn't always bother to find the person who ordered the item., They just left it on the table. My husband and I have been fans of modern brewery for many years, frequently patronizing their operation on Manchester prior to opening this amazing establishment on Oakland. Why? The beer is amazing. This is coming from someone who's not particularly fond of craft beers. Birdman is the beer that changed my mind and to this day is still my favorite!! Over the years, I've tried a number of Modern's beers and although they all may have not been my cup of tea, the quality and passion is in each one. In our most recent visit, I finally tried the food and I was impressed. The portions are very generous and priced well. If you know me, I like to start my tasting experience with small plates to get a feel for the place, so that's what we did. Here is my take on each: Brussels Sprouts salad - Delicious! A very generous portion for a side salad and great flavor. Cajun Arancini - These were so good. A crispy, crunchy exterior with a creamy, cheesy interior. I was not a fan of the dipper. Luckily, they were just fine without any dipper but I would have preferred a marinara or something with more bite. Crushpuppies - Wow! These were wonderful. Again, a crispy, crunchy bite with goodness inside. Unlike the arancini, I think these needed a dipping sauce, perhaps more of the drizzling sauce on the side. Korean tacos - These were a little too sweet but had good heat. The tacos came heaped with meat, almost too much meat. Is that a thing? For me it was...maybe using a larger tortilla would help. Modern is a vibe of its own that offers great beer (wine and cocktails) and good food. Come for the beer but definitely try the food!! You won't be disappointed. There are no servers here. You either need to go up to the order area to get your drink or food or scan a QR code to order. I have mixed feelings with this. On one hand, you don't need to wait for someone to come around place your order but on the other hand, having a server provides more of a personable and connected experience. Definitely not a dealbreaker, though. I love Modern and will continue to frequent this establishment as the beers and food change. You've gotta try it all, right?!? Kudos to Modern Brewery!! Great spot for happy hour or a casual hangout after work. I came here with coworkers and had a really good time. The space is open with plenty of seating and there's a private room for events. They also have outdoor seating! There's a HUGE selection of beer and cocktails. I wish they had mocktails since they're my favorite but that's okay. I tried a modern mimosa beer! Also we tried a mix of their beers, pizzas, and the fried chicken sandwich with cajun fries. The sandwich was huge and super crispy. Definitely filling and flavorful! Parking can be tricky depending on when you go and you might need to park on the street which isn't too bad since it's right there in the same street. Modern Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri is putting out some of the best beers in the city. Between their IPAs and Stouts you could argue one of the top breweries in the State - though don't sleep on the food in the brewery or their other styles. I enjoyed a flight of the darker variety. Toast Malone An Imperial Stout Finished on House Toasted Almonds and Tahitian Gold Vanilla Beans. Looted Art + Coconut (2024 Bourbon Barrel Aged): An Imperial Stout aged for 1 Year in Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels and Slumbered on Toasted Coconut Flakes. This is a coconut BOMB. Phenom (2023 Rye Barrel): A Chocolate Oatmeal Imperial Stout Aged in Sazerac Rye Barrels for 21 Months. Deliciously velvety and chocolatey. Honestly was apprehensive of this being another gentrified space with mid and unseasoned food popping up in STL, but I was pleasantly surprised. 5$ for a Shirley temple is kind of goofy, and 14$ for a generic cocktail you're better off getting straight 1.5oz pours of the good stuff. Would love to see their happy hour deals extended beyond Tuesday-Thursday, and for what their Happy Hour deals include to be added to their website. Tried their pepperoni pizza and fries. I got a Diet Coke (not a drinker) and a slice of the Charlie Murphy (red sauce base, mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, whipped ricotta, fresh basil, and hot honey drizzle) Pizza. It's a large slice. This is a hand tossed fermented dough. Very flavorful and nice. I thought the slice was nice and crisp. I'm curious if it would be the same if you ordered the whole pizza or if it was extra crispy because of the recook on the slice. I liked the char and the slim cornicione of the crust. Great place to grab a bite with family or friends. We went on a Sunday afternoon. There were plenty of tables available both inside and out. You place your order at the bar and they bring it to your table. We ordered a little bit of everything. We tried the bacon cheese fries, kings oak double cheeseburger, barbacoa melt, pepperoni pizza slice and murphy pizza slice. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. My only complaint is that the drinks are all bottled/canned. We will definitely be back! read more

I am an online food and entertainment reviewer who reviews the St Louis and Chicago markets, besides being a Yelp Elite. Sometimes I wonder why entrepreneurs choose the things they do in the restaurant business. Modern Brewery/Kings Oak should just stick to the brewery. The food struck out on so many levels. In their mission statement they talk more about the beer and the "cozy and lively atmosphere" than they do about the food. I ordered the Schnitzel Slider which is PORK TENDERLOIN, slaw, pickle, mustard on a brioche bun. When I see pork tenderloin I expect a nice piece of juicy grilled tenderloin. No, the sandwich came out and was a long thin FRIED piece that stuck out over the bun by 3 inches on each side. And honestly, mixing slaw with mustard? Horrible. I also ordered Butternut Squash soup. I've some really good and some really bad. By nature, butternut squash soup should be smooth, sweet and creamy. This was slightly spicy and was on the thinner side. They have a self serve water station with a faucet and plastic cups. But, NO ice. Room temp water just isn't good. My girlfriend ordered the burger which is a smash burger with arugula and aioli. It was horrible. We thought it was the burger that had a funny taste. We believe it was the aioli. I mean c'mon, who screws up a burger. To add insult to injury, as I was finishing up the Brussels sprouts there was a sizable although small piece of burger on the plate. The bus staff swoops in and takes the plate without asking if I was done. I will say this, the Brussels sprouts with lemon vinaigrette and candied walnuts was very good. With a lot of good restaurants in St Louis, restaurant pricing sky high, and tons of competition for your food dollar I cannot in good conscious recommend this restaurant. read more
