I will start off my saying that you should call to make a reservation even on Tuesday. We got there at 7pm and was told we couldn't be seated inside until 8:30 but they had take out and picnic tables outside of we wanted to eat sooner. We did take them up on this offer and was also able to order drinks from the bar. We sat drinking our cocktails and waiting nearly 30 minutes before my boyfriend asked about our food. We were told it would be ready soon. Another 10 minutes and we looked inside to see two seats at the bar. We took them and were told they would bring our food to us. Another 20 minutes went by before we got our first dish and 5 minutes before we had to ask for the second. When we finally got our food, I can say it was a pleasant surprise that both dishes were hot. I ordered the seafood casserole and my boyfriend the whole belly fried clam plate. My seafood was tender, the creamy sherry sauce was perfectly seasoned (I'm a cream sauce snob). The clams were also tender and the cole slaw delicious. Alison was our bartender. She was a delight. Although it really was so busy in there she kept up with her orders and never looked frazzled. She even put the Red Sox game on during all this. She make me a watermelon martini which I highly recommend. Dana, the head chef and owner came out to us asking about our food and offered us a dessert for our long wait. We found this after seeing 4 1/2 stars on yelp. We had the chowder, salmon, and stuffed mushrooms. All the food was ok, but not really good. The chowder was thin, and the salmon over cooked. My son, husband and I had dinner here on a rainy night earlier this week and it was excellent. The broiled seafood sampler was interesting, flavorful and well cooked. My son said the paste in his primavera was fresh and al dente. The atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious, which was perfect for my non-dress-up family. This review is of the takeout window only. The Square Rigger used to be my favorite place for lobster rolls and chowder - but this year's price increase is sheer piracy. They jacked up the price for a lobster roll, and it no longer comes with a cup of chowder. By the time you add in the chowder, it amounts to a 20% PRICE INCREASE IN A SINGLE YEAR. 96 bucks for the same tab that was $79 one year ago. I love everything about this place, from the food to the ambiance to the service. Every time we go to MV we go and it is consistently very good. The family friendly atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed. I like the nautical theme, it's very "islandy" and even if you're not a local you feel like one at their cozy bar. We ate here for our only dinner in Martha's Vineyard. I would say it was just average overall. My mom and grandma both ordered the pasta primavera which came with side salads. The pasta dishes were HUGE. They could have shared the dish and still had some left over. It was jam packed with veggies. Based on the size, I was happy I settled on getting the app portion of pasta and the crab cakes. Both were average - the pasta sauce wasn't anything great. Neither my mom or I were too happy with the wines we drank. The atmosphere was exactly what you'd expect for a 'New England' feel in the restaurant. Went lobster roll and quahog chowder to lunch after we hit the brewery across the street. The chowder was AMAZING. Probably the best I had all week around the cape. Lobster roll was served with potato chips, which I don't like but wife does. I asked to sub fries and still got the chips with the fries on the side. The lobster roll was pretty good... looked like mostly leg and claw meat, no tail... but not a ton of filler mayo or celery. Wife ordered the hot lobster roll, which is a nice option. Absolutely incredible experience with Chelsea as our waitress. This establishment is authentic, welcoming, mellow, and has phenomenal food. We ordered multiple items including the baked cod, seafood casserole, double-stuffed lobster, clam chowder, and sides and left full and happy. The BEST lobster roll I have ever had!! We asked our hotel concierge where she would go for the best roll on the island and she sent us there. Perfect spot! The owner Tony was absolutely wonderful. There was almost two lbs of lobster in the roll and it came with a delicious cup of chowder. I couldn't even speak as I ate. It was that fantastic. This restaurant was recommended to us by a number of locals for its farm to table approach to classic American food with a focus on seafood. The food was quite good... I had the clam chowder which, as a chowder snob, was my least favorite thing.... it was a bit too runny and the meat was really chewy to the point of not being edible. (Our waitress, however, was kind enough to take it off of the bill as a result). As for my filet mignon, it was perfect. But the real star was the produce... the side salad (often a "throwaway" at restaurants) was made with incredible local greens and the side veg of a puréed squash was *out of this world* good. My boyfriend had fried clams which were wonderful... perfect breading so as to not overwhelm the wonderful clams. He then got the special... a lobster casserole with a strip steak. The lobster was great and, again, the beef was really nice. All portions were very generous, which led us is to guiltily leave a lot on the table, but apparently they participate in a local composting program, which assuaged most of our guilt. But we both felt, more than anything else, the service was fantastic. Our waitress Laura was a complete doll as well as being highly knowledgeable about the menu... plus, since we were one of the last tables of the evening, she brought over extra au jus and popovers... a real treat! We will most definitely be coming back on our next visit... and I'll just skip the chowder and bask in a massive dish of whatever is in season! read more

This place was very good during our trip to Oaks Bluff Martha's Vineyard! We stoped as this place before heading to the beach. The turkey wrap was great, however the Chicken Salad was amazing! i've been going here all my life and while it is a staple for an older generation of islanders i have never been blown away by the food. it's good, odds are pretty good you'll have a good meal, i'm a big fan of the prime rib with their butternut squash and rice pilaf sides (very tasty) but if you have a seafood allergy you can cut the menu in half, from what i hear all the lobster dishes are amazing, unfortunately i can't partake. the staff here is always very friendly and very helpful, they really know their menu and you will walk away full. read more

I had been passing the Square Rigger for years but never stopped in because of its awkward location. So glad I did. It is an old school restaurant with quality food. The Clams Casino are awesome (even if they don't have a piece of bacon on top) The drinks were perfect too. We had the grilled lobster, steak tips with shrimp scampi and steak tips with shrimp alfredo. There wasn't a drop left on our plates, the lobster was fresh and flavorful and the steak tips were cooked to perfection (didn't even use the salt) and the shrimp dishes were a very nice complement. I even enjoyed the salad prior to the meal. We will go back the next time we are on the island. read more

This is the second time we have had take out at this restaurant. I can honestly say this is the worst customer service experience imaginable. We were told food would be ready in 10 minutes. We arrived on time and waited at least 40 minutes. By the way we ordered 2 lobster rolls and a shrimp cocktail. The girl at the window never smiled, was nasty when everyone placed their order and thought texting was more important than answering a simple question. "Do you have any idea how much longer? We went here on Saturday, August 12, for dinner. There were 4 of us, myself, my husband, my sister and her husband. We received a warm welcome upon arriving. Our waitress, Laura, was amazing! She has a great personality and extremely knowledgeable of the menu and the cooking styles. We had the fried clam appetizer special which was the best fried clams I've ever had and I'll admit I'm quite the aficionado! It was lightly battered, large portion and delicious. I had the baked stuffed lobster which was moist and the stuffing made me keep eating even after I was full because I couldn't get enough of it! My husband had the sautéed lobster, he wanted all the deliciousness of the lobster but not have to work for it, ha! My sister and her husband both had the seafood special of sea bass with Cajun spices. My brother in law also got his with shrimp on top. We are still talking about our food, waitress and service three days later. We will definitely go back and bring our kids next time. They have a great kids menu too!
