What a cute shop! Ended my beach day with a sweet treat after catching the sunset on East Beach. The line moves in a really weird way and usually just results in some people choosing their own path. I think everyone at the window does a great job of getting everyone their order quickly. I got a double scoop of coffee Oreo and salted caramel chip in a cup. Stopped in for a quick "grinder" before heading to the beach and it was just alright. We ordered an Italian grinder for $13.95 and a large soda for $4. The actual sandwich itself looked decent, the bread was perfectly toasted with a ton of fresh veggies on it, but the meat portion was underwhelming. If you are going to charge $14 for a sandwich, please make sure the meat portion meets what your charging, it was 2-3 slices of meat, making exactly one layer of protein. The food is pretty solid and everyone there is fairly nice. I'd say the only major complaints are that they have no air conditioning there and is cash only. I spent nearly every weekend in Westerly last summer, and no weekend was quite complete until I got my fix at St. Clair Annex. Their peppermint ice cream is divine; they're one of few ice cream establishments that I know of that carry the flavor regularly. I've also had coffee, sandwiches, and snacks from St. Clair Annex, and they've all been fantastic. This little local institution is snug between tons of shops and close to the cute little carousel which is popular among the area's kid community. Didn't know quite what to expect from a spot in a touristy locale serving up sandwiches and ice cream. With a captive audience, the food just has to be mediocre to keep the crowds coming. But had to hold back a star because good service is key for me. The chowder was OUTSTANDING! This chowder featured good bits of quoahog - the large variety hard shell clam - with tasty potatoes and onions. It had a rich broth seasoned gently with rosemary. SO good. Not long afterwards, my lobster roll came up at the counter. It was a roll served up in a buttered hot dog bun cradled in some finely shredded iceberg lettuce and a side of piping hot fries. I counted at least four whole lobster claws in the roll and the meat was fresh-out-of-the-shell tender and delicious. The whole cup of chower and roll was twenty bucks. Seriously?? A freaking bargain! I would go back tonight - four hours later for another lobster roll and cup of chowder. Went there for lunch yesterday. Placed my order at the window with the young man he confirmed my order and seemed to understand what I wanted. The order Came out wrong and I explained to him the error he went in the back and few minutes later came out with another order which was still incorrect. i heard him tell his manager that it was wrong and the manager said "well if she wants it remade she will have to pay double since we already wasted two meals" I then went back to talk with the manager and he was firm that I had ordered wrong and they were right. I was fortunate enough to have some friends with a boat take us to Watch Hill for the afternoon (coming from their launch in Groton). We weren't sure how our day was going to play out (lunch in CT or RI was the question) and I was seriously hoping for a killer seafood lunch closer to Groton. We popped into St. Clair for a quick bite and I was really happy to see that they had a lobster roll on the menu. Three of the four of us ordered it and we all really enjoyed it. All of us are more inclined to order a hot lobster roll but we agreed that this simple, stuffed roll with mayo and lettuce on a perfectly buttered and grilled NE style hot dog roll was well worth the $20 price tag.
