Long lines to order, even at off times, but the food came quick!! I had the clam chowder, crab cake sandwich, lobster grilled cheese, and fries. All were great. The chowder had an excellent, rich flavor, with lots of clam pieces. Quite chewy, so maybe avoid if that's not your thing. The crab cake sandwich had a great helping of crab that was cooked well. The lobster grilled cheese was crispy, warm, and flavorful, and the fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. This is a favorite stop for us - so conveniently located on Route 1. Over the few years, since it opened, they've created a lovely spot under a giant tent and with plenty of parking. Sure, it doesn't have the water view that its sister location in Narragansett has, but we're happy to have the same great food nearby! The chowder is among the best in the area, the fried clam cakes are great too! We often get the tacos. This Father's Day they had grill shrimp tacos which were excellent and reasonably priced. My daughter likes the swordfish tacos which are also great. The salsas and sauces are professionally prepared. What's better than spending the Fourth of July at Monahan's? I'm glad they were open after a day at the beach. The line wasn't too long and a friend of mine had been raving about this place so I decided to stop in for dinner. With so many seafood options on the menu, it was hard to decide. But you can never go wrong with Point Judith calamari to start. And for my entree I did the swordfish tacos on the specials menu. WOW! What flavor they packed in them. We stopped at Monahan's Clam Shack on the recommendation of a woman who said the food was amazing. We arrived around 5:30 on a Friday night and there was a very long line to order - a great sign! We ordered the 3 clam cakes appetizer, a lobster roll (cold) and a scallop dinner. The good arrived fairly quickly and was very hot! The scallops were perfectly cooked with a nice batter, but they had a lot of grease in the container. They should have been left to drain a bit longer before plating. The lobster roll was ok. Larger pieces of lobster, rather than tiny minced up pieces would have made the flavor a bit better. The "clam cakes" were not, in fact, cakes. They were fritters. Large fritters that were piping hot, unfortunately they had little to no actual clams in them. Two of them had not one piece of clam - I checked after biting into the first one and realized it was a large dough ball- the third one had 3 pieces of clam and one only was a discernible large enough piece with clam flavor. As a native of Maine, I've eaten many, many clam cakes and I can attest to the fact that these should not have been named clamcakes and a lot more actual clam pieces should have been in them. read more

Ordered a cold lobster today and was underwhelmed. Lobster was tasteless and a little watery. I suspect the lobster had been frozen. It might have been helped with salt and pepper. Food was great! Can't deny that - the hot lobster roll was greasy and buttery as heck but it didn't make me sick - though I only had half of mine and traded with my partner for her cold lobster roll. Which was also great! Add fried and some pretty nothing coleslaw, and two sodas, and we're $75 in the hole for something that left us wanting more... but it was undeniably good, and stacked high. We knew it would be expensive and we were ready to splurge on it. Unfortunate that we were left hungry but that's probably more of a personal problem. Outdoor seating was nice! We had spent the morning at Ninigret Park and Monahan's was an awesome spot to grab lunch afterwards. There were a ton of people there for lunch. but they did a great job at getting through the line and getting everyone's orders out the door quickly. We got the mozzarella sticks, fried whole belly clams, cold lobster roll, and the red chowder. The red chowder was really good and definitely something I'd order again. The lobster roll was jam packed with lobster which I appreciated, but I think they use Miracle Whip. And well, I just can't 100% get behind miracle whip, it just doesn't taste great. The whole belly clams were hot and fresh. They have two seating areas with a ton of picnic tables. It was packed so we had to share with someone else, which worked out just fine. They have a basketball hoop which all the kids were loving, but it was right in the middle of the back parking lot. When it's busy there are way too many cars going through there for the kids to be playing there. They also have a large field with cornholde setup. When I travel to the Northeast, there are a couple things I look for in different restaurants - - items you just cannot find or are simply not as good on the West Coast. A classic example for me would be clam strips, or even better clam bellies. So when I saw this clam shack around lunch time, I had to stop. Ma'am, I am so glad that I did! Fresh, delicious huge portion of fried clam bellies. Perfectly cooked. Nice table outside. A perfect travel meal. I am only sorry that it is around 3000 miles away! read more

This road side clam shack used to be The Hitching Post for as long as I remember. I actually headed down here with a friend returning to RI after being away for 20 years because she had a nostalgic craving for clam fritters from the former restaurant. Welp. We found out it was operated by Monahan's en route but she wanted to go to the spot to check it out and see if it tracked with what she remembered. It was-only better! It still has the vintage feel of the roadside clam shack. Order at the window and get your food. Pleasant counter staff were patient with a steady line of Saturday lunch patrons ahead of us. It always cracks me up when people aren't sure what they want to order after standing in front of the menu board for ten minutes in line...but I digress. They had a really nice selection of seafood offerings that were mostly fried. We each opted for the lobster roll (one hot and one cold) and split a 1/2 dozen clam cakes (aka fritters). Believe me - you will want to order more clam cakes than that, but don't. They are tasty, crispy and loaded with clams but they are filling!! Three per person leaves you with fried food regret, but not terrible. The lobster rolls were about $25 each and so worth it. Mostly claw and knuckle meat that had minimal Mayo and NO celery...exactly the way I prefer. Generous portion of lobster nestled on fresh green lettuce leaf in a toasted brioche bun. I never eat the bun, preferring to just enjoy the lobster. I got a side of hot butter to dip the lobster meat. Excellent call! Some folks did take their orders on the road. We grabbed a picnic table in the beautifully shaded side garden. The helpful staff brought our order to our table after a very short wait. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, service and location. No obscenely long lines, easy parking in their private lot and a nice quiet area to enjoy the meal. AND - there's cornhole to pass the time while you wait for food or to entertain the kids. Real bathrooms in the back that are clean and accessible eating areas for young and old. Wow! This place did not disappoint! I ordered the cold lobster roll and it was packed and delicious! My spouse got the fish and chips. It was seriously amazing! Two good pieces of fish cooked to perfection. The seasoning was on point and flavorful served with both lemon and tartar sauce. The staff are lovely. We opted to eat in their picnic area and food was brought out to us. A line formed shortly after we arrived and they made quick work of taking everyone's orders. The Good: Even with a super long line, it went fast and the food came out way quicker than I thought. Friendly people. The hot lobster roll was unreal - 9.5/10. Scallops were HUGE and tender, but lacked sweetness or any seasoning for that matter. White Clam Chowder was very flavorful, but our cup only had 2 pieces of clam. All broth and potatoes. My son had the fish and chips which was good but the fish was breaded with Italian flavored breadcrumbs which was not what I'd call fish and chips. It was good, and the fries were good, but we expected a batter coated fish and that's not what their fish and chips are. We ordered the fish sandwich, a piece of fried flounder and onion rings to share. The fish was paper thin and so greasy you could only eat half of you'd be sick. They have 2 sizes of onion rings so I ordered the large. They give you 7 greasy rings in the large and they are so greasy they fell apart. We live locally and I now remember why we said not to go back from last year's visit and we had different food then. Not worth the $36 read more

A couple weeks ago, this would've been 5 stars. My two first visits here they crushed it with the fish Reuben sandwich. Others in the group had ahi tacos and BLT. The last visit, the fish in the Reuben was off a bit- I got used to the dry, crisp-fried version from other visits and I hope the last one was just an anomaly. Takeout service was pretty quick even on fathers day and the picnic tables and cornhole set up in back is great. Will definitely be back. read more

This place use to be very good. Not sure what's happened but the fish sandwich was very well done with a weird kinda of seasoning. It wasn't fried with a nice golden batter and the bun that it was on was a small slider type bun. It was terrible. read more

I had fried clams, clam chowder and my wife had lobster roll. The clams, lobster roll and chowder were OK, but really not great. It was our first time and I expected it to be really great food, but it just was not that great. Clams were small and dry, chowder was a tad spicy and not very many clam bits, not very good flavor. Lobster roll was generous but, dry and not flavorful. I regularly get fried clams, chowder and lobster rolls at other seafood restaurants in Galilee and Matunuck and it's definitely much better. Some people rave about the food at Monaghan's, but it just wasn't that notable to me and I was disappointed. To those who enjoy it.. I say just keep going. I'll probably not go back again. read more
