If ever there was a MORE worse time to have surgery, it's during a pandemic!! But if you have to have surgery during a pandemic the best place to go is St. David's Surgical Hospital. Hands. Down. In July, my doctor scheduled surgery for me in August. I was terrified at the idea of going to a hospital with sick patients, possible COVID cases, masks, etc... All of my worries were eased during my pre-op visit at the hospital. Every staff person took measures to ensure safety of all patients including limiting access, taking temperatures, safe social distancing, and requiring masks. The facility itself is beautiful, clean, and well- maintained. While waiting in the lobby, I noticed that everytime someone vacated a seating area, the area was immediately sanitized. Mary (registration/check in) was so nice and so sweet. She noticed my wait time was pretty lengthy so she got me started on my surgical paperwork so I wouldn't have to do it on the day of my surgery. My pre-op visit was handled by Alli (RN) and Dr. Hudson. Both were caring and compassionate. Both helped me feel calm and at ease. It was a great start. Friday before the surgery, I came back to the hospital for a COVID test. The test was conducted by a very patient and kind nurse. It was quick and relatively painless (I cried of course). Op day was very chill. There were a handful of people in the waiting lobby. Again, everyone took measures to ensure patient safety and I was allowed one guest. My husband stayed with me during the pre-op wait and visits with nurses and the anesthesiologists. The pre-op bays are only separated by curtains, but considering you're not there for very long, it was no biggie. I was still able to talk candidly to staff and my husband. Off to surgery....... And then I wake up. All I remember was that I felt like I was on a shopping cart far away from the others. From what I remember, the post-op area was open, but I was out of it, so I guess it was all good. I do remember being nauseated on the ride to my room and one of the nurses crashed my bed into a wall, but I didn't get sick, so I'm not holding it against anyone. I think I was mostly asleep for the first day and some of the second day. All the nurses and nurse aides were amazing! I can't remember all of them, but there was Christie, Hannah, Jillian (?) , And many others. They were super kind and patient and gentle. The other staff that deserve kudos are housekeeping and the food staff. They called me each night to take my order because I was too out of it to do it myself. The set-up. Ok so the room set up is fantastic. I don't think there were ever more than ten patients on the floor (probably way less). The floor was quiet and calm. The room is huge with the bed, two chairs, a coffee table, external sink, bathroom (with a bathroom sink); then there was the attached guest room with a pull-out sofa bed, closet, and tv, and another coffee table outside the guest room. The suite was big enough that I could walk laps around it instead of walking up and down the halls. The food menu was pretty incredible. If only I had an appetite. I stuck to soups and juices and they were decent. Husband ordered from the same menu. I believe the price was $9 flat for anything. He ended up with a steak meal a couple times. It definitely DID NOT look like hospital food and he said it was good. Overall my stay was comfortable. Everyone was kind and caring. They definitely do surgery and recovery right!

The pre-op and OR staff were wonderful! They were kind and thorough in their explanations. I felt they genuinely cared about me and my experience. I was particularly impressed that the anesthesia and OR staff would come and visit with me. I met 4 people preoperatively and they were all remarkable. I couldn't have felt more at ease going into a major procedure. I honestly thought that if I needed surgery in the future this was definitely the place I would go. Unfortunately, my post-op nursing experience was so horrendous I could never recommend this facility nor will I ever go back. My night nurse, Cyndi, Is a disgrace to the nursing profession. She seemed absolutely annoyed at even the simplest request. My husband was afraid to go home for the night and leave me in her care. He had noticed how simple requests were handled as a huge inconvenience. Asking for a soda with some ice, I got a mini can and a great big plastic container of ice. I asked if I could please have a cup and a straw, grunts and eye rolls with a response if "you said you wanted soda and ice, that's what I brought." My broken call light began calling the nurses station anytime I tried to use the TV. After I apologized multiple times, a man at the desk yelled the f-word and began storming down the hall, opened my door and yelled "what!" After apologizing and explaining, yet again, that I did not push the call light, I asked him to see if the cord was fully plugged in. He chuckled and mentioned that he had placed a work order for the call light to be repaired 3 months ago. No reason the staff should've kept yelling "what!" Into the call light every time it went off. Needless to say, I didn't dare watch TV or use any of the controls on that. I was sick of getting yelled at. My husband noticed the next morning that it was taped and jimmied. No apologies, nothing. I felt terrible every time I asked for anything. I'm prediabetic, they only had mini diet Shasta and mini diet ginger ale. I didn't realize they had been giving me a jello with sugar. I asked the nurse to check my blood sugar she said she would need an order and she wasn't going to call to get an order to do so. They kept checking my temp orally right after giving me ice or ice water. I mentioned that it would be great if they'd check it before or wait a bit so it would be accurate. They would respond with something along the lines of "put the thermometer in your mouth." All I got from that night staff was grunts and eye rolls. It was the worst hospital experience I've ever had. They kept telling me to take more pain medicine than I wanted or needed. They'd bring in large doses and tell me that I needed to take it because of my pain score, which was better managed with the ice packs they didn't want to keep brining in. They'd complain about having to waste the medicine I didn't want to take. I knew that keeping my gut working as well as possible was vital to my recovery from this procedure. They were frustrated that I wanted to use Ice packs and positioning to help my pain as much as possible. I'm suspecting their game plan Is to drug the patients so that they won't be bothered. The nurse complained to me that the CNA emptied my drain and foley because now she didn't know how much was In there. Seriously, It was a joke. I felt like her emotional punching bag all night. She needs some therapy or something. I was literally scared that if I had to stay another night I'd have the same nurse. I was so grateful that my guy was working well enough the next day that I was able to go home. I was absolutely not going to stay one minute longer and I will never go back. It's unfortunate because the pre-op and OR staff were exceptional and the facility is beautiful. The hospitalist also was so very kind! Very, very sad. I would have loved to have had a good experience. The pre-op and OR staff were outstanding but you never know if you're going to end up having to stay the night.

Everything was five star in this hospital - from the care my husband received from the nurses, to the staff delivering our food! Everyone cared about not only my husband's health and recovery but also the comfort of the caregiver - me. All of the nurses were efficient and kind, even when juggling multiple patients and calls. They always followed up on our questions and concerns and kept us informed. The doctor at the hospital Dr. Berneburg was very aggressive about my husband's care, which was needed. He kept in contact with my husband's doctors about his surgery and recovery and made some important adjustments to his medications. My husband's hospital room consisted of a suite with a separate bedroom that had a closing door and full size pull out bed. This made staying overnight much easier and comfortable. The hospital room was large with enough room for two oversized chairs and a small table. You could also order room service for yourself. The food was great! Hospital grounds were nice. There is a covered parking garage and lots of comfortable waiting areas. I recommend the small waiting area on the second floor, past the larger one just off the elevators. It's private and quiet and good for sleeping while waiting for surgery updates.

I have had many nurses over the course of 8 months, with a total of 6 surgeries and Nurse Susan was my all time favorite.

Despite her visible dehydration and the difficulty staff had establishing an IV, she remained in the ER for approximately four hours without receiving any IV fluids. Before being discharged, she suffered a physical setback, yet she was still sent home. The following day, we were notified that she tested positive for C. diff. It is deeply concerning that a patient in her condition, with what turned out to be a serious infection, was brushed off and discharged while still thirsty and weak. We now have to wait several days to see her primary care physician for follow-up care that should have been initiated or supported by the emergency team. I am disappointed by the lack of effort and the dismissive attitude we encountered during this visit. I would appreciate a review of her case and an explanation as to why standard interventions, such as administering saline fluids, were not provided given her symptoms. We can do better for all patients.

When she called for someone to come clean her it took them many hours to show up... up to 6 hours at times. I could go off about many other things about her time here but I am running out of characters. So incredibly outraged! When I spoke up about the care, only excuses were made and no accountability was taken. Still she sat hours upon hours in her own feces after I spoke up and advocated for her. Unacceptable!!!

I figure I better write this review before a year is up on it. This was not a plan visit but then…read moreagain what hospital visit is planned. I'm just gonna cover the highlights of what makes this good and bad in my opinion. First and foremost with any hospital ratings is the nurses. I've got to admit this ascension Seton has more outstanding; above average nurses. Like around 70%. Then about 15% our average and 10% are below average. Unfortunately, there are about 5% that are in the category of why are they even nurses if they hate people? I found these mostly to be the Night Shift people. Next step is the hospital beds, they have two types. I'm gonna call them the Chevy and the Cadillac. Needless to say they are both uncomfortable. The bar that gets them to move up and down so you could sit lay down have your legs up or also what sticks in your back the entire time making sleep impossible. The Chevy beds I have to admit did at least have convenient factors of a cell phone charger right in the framework so you didn't have to try and stretch it to the wall. It was also easier to make the bed go up and down, which is extremely helpful around meal times. It is a pain to get your food served on a tray that needs to slide under your bed, except it doesn't give you room to sit with the table in front of you. There were so many times when I had to eat almost laying down with just my neck above the food tray, not comfortable The temperature throughout the hospital it's always a bit chilly. I can't remember the reason for it but it's medical. One room they had me in. I was freezing and I like the cold. I asked for more blankets since most of the blankets they have are so thin. My favorite was they asked me if I wanted a heated blanket and what they do is they throw it in the dryer for about 15 minutes then bring it to you. So you have a short amount of time where your body can absorb that heat before it's all cold again. My main point being is that freezing room was freezing because the air conditioning was broken in it and it was probably about 62° until they fixed it. Now the most important factor the food. Most of the time they will hand you the menu items that you can order off of they don't tell you about the off menu items. Get to know the lady who brings around the menus and be real nice to her and she will tell you what off menu items that she can get for you. There were certain things I did, which I don't normally do. I told them I was allergic to pork because that pork was so overcooked. It was disgusting. Don't order extra vegetables. It basically is overcooked mush. And whatever you do, don't eat the eggs in the morning. They are the fake powder kind that you mix with water and fry up. Trust me it taste fake. Some of the favorites of the off menu items were the spinach, strawberry pecan salad and the grilled chicken sandwich. I don't know about anyone else, but I basically saw my doctor for approximately two minutes before I went in for surgery and that was it. You mostly deal with the nurses or the doctors assistants. During my time there, they were renovating the hospital because it was an older one. So if you were brought to the basement to have test done, you get to go by the new cafeteria being built, which was going to be huge. I don't want to say I wanna be here again but as a hospital, it was OK
