IV carrying anesthesia came out during procedure. Woke to my nose burning from the tube, my hands throbbing from nurses vigorously trying to put in a new IV, and being extremely aware of what the doctor was doing. The nurses and doctor were all kind, but the guy who came in to start the anesthesia never addressed me at all. I am a definite proponent of efficiency, but this was a very assembly line like experience. read more

Surgery went very well and the staff are very efficient and caring. I would recommend coming here for patient care.

TLDR: They drugged me with a dangerous opioid without my consent, and it could have been damaging. Best of all, there was no reason to violate me like that except to save themselves a few minutes. Yes, I was violated! Anesthesiologist at this facility was either in a rush or didn't want to answer questions, because she never informed me of the drugs they intended to use, even after my wife asked! "We just use propofol. Easy on, easy off" is all she said. Discharge papers just showed propofol, too. There was never a discussion about risks or alternatives, even though she stated so in the medical records. After an afternoon and night not breathing or sleeping well (and my wife staying up to make sure I didn't stop breathing), I requested my medical records. Turns out they also gave me fentanyl without ever disclosing it! I have central sleep apnea (disclosed to the Dr), which doesn't play well with opioids. It could have killed me! Why would they do this? From my review of the literature, it looks like adding fentanyl to propofol shaves around 2 minutes off of procedure time. They were willing to give me dangerous opioids, with potential adverse reactions, to save themselves a couple of minutes? This was completely against my wishes and without my informed consent. It was illegal. And to the best of my knowledge, she's still working there. My wife and I mentioned other concerns that no one bothered to write down in the medical file. They don't seem to care about your concerns, don't seem to respect your wishes, and don't seem to care about or respect your loved-ones. They seem to only be concerned with kicking you out the door ASAP. Other things happened that I'm not listing here. If these things happened to me, they could happen to you. Be an empowered patient and don't let doctors violate you or your rights! Check your records after a procedure and stay away from this place! read more

Nurses and doctors are very nice and we're able to answer all my questions to my satisfaction! The entire process from checkin to checkout was well organized and efficient, thanks to everyone from the nurses, doctors, to the receptionist. The facility was spacious, large comfortable waiting room, and well equipped modern operating room. If I have any future needs, I will try coming back here, depending on my insurance coverage. read more

No prior mention, and wasn't even listed in discharge papers! Completely irresponsible and DANGEROUS! And turns out they signed forms saying my husband had been informed of risks and alternatives to medications used. THAT'S A LIE! I was there--these discussions NEVER happened. Update: *****WE HAD CONCERNS ABOUT PATIENT RIGHTS AND SAFETY. WE BOTH FELT VIOLATED.***** All I received is the inadequate Google review reply you see below that falls short of guaranteeing the necessary changes WILL be made to protect other patients and their loved ones. I also feel it doesn't show sincere concern for what we experienced. They can review processes all they want, but it can't change how we were treated. If they were truly committed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders, I would think better processes would have been put in place years ago so that some of what we experienced would not have even been possible. To say I'm not impressed with this response is an understatement, but it doesn't surprise me in the least. Also, I don't feel like our feedback was initially taken very seriously at all--our concerns were dismissed at first. Original: My husband requested I be at his side immediately after his procedure. I had to ask the front desk three times to be escorted back to my husband after they sent a text notification stating he was in recovery. It felt like they were holding him hostage. I felt like my insistence at honoring my husband's wishes was treated as an annoyance. Maybe they made me wait longer out of spite (I did ask nicely, in case anyone is wondering)? Maybe they didn't feel any urgency? Maybe they didn't care and thought of me as his annoying little wife? About 25 minutes elapsed between the completion of the procedure and being reunited with my husband. No medical or safety reasons were ever provided for the extended delay. Unethical. Unconscionable. Just because they do these things every day doesn't mean their patients do. It certainly doesn't mean their loved ones are not worried for them. As my husband's partner and advocate, I should not have to fight anyone for access to him once he is out of a procedure room (in recovery as the text message told me). I should not feel a sense of panic because I am not there for him, as he himself asked of me. And I should absolutely be treated with more respect than being asked to have private conversations over the phone in a waiting room, trying to *not* miss the nurse who should have taken me back to him right away. And yes, I stated early in those conversations that I was indeed in the waiting room, and it didn't seem to matter one bit, especially to the doctor. I did not feel respected as my husband's health advocate or partner, and that is unacceptable. Edit: My husband is on the phone with the administrator. We are getting what I feel are the standard excuses. There is no excuse for the way we were treated, at least not from my point of view. Obviously, they feel like they were in the right, and I don't agree. *****There were other concerns I don't feel are appropriate to post, but they were in regards to patient rights.***** This was a terrible experience I hope no one else has to go through. I feel angry, frustrated, and helpless. Please consider a different surgery center because I know from personal experience that this could have gone a lot smoother. My expectations were clearly set higher than I should have expected from this facility because I've had a much more positive and patient-centered experience at another center in Austin. You absolutely have a choice, and I encourage you to exercise that right and find a place that may not leave you feeling the way I do right now. The damage is done! read more

Surgery is never an exciting thing however I can say my experience here was top tier! Once I went back, the team of people were very attentive and efficient. I was treated with care, respect and listened to. I had to get a broken bone fixed and I can say my experience was probably the best that it could've been for an outpatient service. I started to panic inside right when we were starting the procedure. This was my second surgery on that eye. I didn't think I was going feel like that. The care was fine, but the billing was terrible. We have United Healthcare and Oakwood doesn't have a decent negotiated rate with them (almost twice as much as Austin Endoscopy Center). We did self-pay (still more than AEC's negotiated rate) on a payment plan and thought we were set. Then we got a bill with an identical charge for a different insurance code. So, double billing for the same procedure, with the addition of a biopsy. The entire procedure took the doctor 5 minutes and the biopsy added maybe a minute. And as an outpatient, the time spent was about 3 hours from check-in to check-out. The other thing is that they use a small, local lab - Clinical Pathology Associates (not CPL) - that also doesn't have a decent negotiated rate with United Healthcare. Our insurance company recommends Labcorp. The local lab charged almost 4 times as much as Labcorp's negotiated rate ($1100 vs. $300). We weren't given a choice about what lab to use or told how much it would cost. I am guessing most of Oakwood's patients use Medicare judging by the age of folks in the waiting room. If you don't have Medicare or an insurance plan that covers 100% of costs, don't agree to come here until you check with your insurance company and ask about all the hidden costs. If we had known the true costs, we would have driven into Austin and gone to the Austin Endoscopy Center and asked for LabCorp. Not happy with these folks at all. read more

Wonderful staff at Oakwood Surgery Center! My mom had cataract surgery here. Kala C. was her pre op RN and was so helpful, friendly, and comforting. Dr. Ryan Sturgeon was my mom's anesthesiologist and was absolutely wonderful, too. The post op staff was fantastic, although I didn't get their names. I can't say enough great things about this surgery center. They were so great about every detail leading up to my procedure. With all the concerns with COVID, I was a bit on edge. I felt completely safe and am so glad I didn't put this off longer. I felt like the staff really cared and took the time with me to make sure I was comfortable in every way. They even followed up with me next day and made sure I was doing well. I will definitely book my next procedure here if I can. read more

I had knee surgery at Oakwood Surgery Center in Round Rock. I thought the nurses & anesthesiologist were extremely caring! They did everything to ensure my comfort both before & after surgery. I would definitely recommend this center! The only reason I only gave 4 stars is due to not being able to speak to someone when calling. Made sure the center and doctor was in network, but they used an out of network anesthesiologist with no choice of choosing another one and I wasn't even aware until it was too late. Notice that all the complaints on here and basically everywhere else are about the billing department...? Rude doesn't even start to describe the condescending, arrogant, nonsense that comes from Lisa Sweatman. (And thanks for admitting on the phone today that you violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) She thinks she is the final authority, but I'll make sure that she understands that she isn't. They tried to overbill us both times we went there. The first time we finally got it resolved, but the second time has been an ongoing pain in the butt. Paid in full doesn't seem to mean anything to these morons. You tell me how much it is going to cost, and I pay in advance, then you don't get to recalculate and add some more fees on top of the bill. Even the billing department can't explain why they don't know how much it will cost. I'm done fighting with that unreasonable woman, but will be filing suit to get this resolved and will update with the results of their willful violations. Perhaps someone in administration should take note that all the problems lead right back to Ms. Sweatman and her attitude. read more

My primary doctor did a great job checking with insurance AHEAD of the procedure. If you have issues with billing it's probably because it wasn't set up well from your provider. I knew exactly what I would owe and I have united healthcare. They immediately told me my doctor was running a little behind but it wasn't long before I was taken back. I went back and I never had much wait time. They seamlessly got me dressed, prepped and to the procedure room and out and home. I felt like there was no lag time. The nurse who prepped me was especially nice and talked to me like actually to me. Which is really nice given you know they say the same thing over and over all day. The staff called the following day to make sure I felt well and didn't have any questions. I would definitely go back! read more

Very clean and comfortable surgery center. The nursing staff was very attentive and caring, the bed was comfortable, and there was even a heater of some kind on the wall that attached via a flexible tube to my gown to keep me gently warmed! That was wonderful and comforting. I've had surgery at other facilities and was moved from the "pre-surgery" bed to a stretcher, to the operating table, to another stretcher, and then to a bed in the recovery area. At Oakwood, I was on the same comfortable bed start to finish, including in the operating room - nice! The only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars was this: before surgery, an anesthesiologist came and interviewed me about my history and briefly explained his procedure. Then, as they wheeled me into the operating room, I was introduced to a Nurse Anesthetist who would be doing my anesthesia. It felt something like a "bait and switch" deal, though I'm sure she was qualified and I woke up in the recovery room remembering nothing of the procedure (much to my relief). I just think I should have been told beforehand that it would be either "this person" or "that person" who would be doing the anesthesia. read more

I had a trapeziectomy with lrti done here 3 weeks ago. The staff is exceptional, they were professional, attentive and kind. The anesthesia staff was really top notch. Most narcotics make me nauseous and I'm vomiting after even simple procedures but not only was my surgery pain-free it was also nausea-free. The nurses were all absolutely wonderful, making sure I was always comfortable and my husband was included in all aspects of my care. They warmly and courteously answered any of our questions. Also, I received a follow-up call from them the next day to ensure I was OK and ask if I had any questions. I've had medical care at various other places and this place topped them all, from the very first contact with the office and reception staff throughout. In my opinion, the cost for my surgery at Oakwood was not unreasonable and I appreciate the fact that they confirm cost with you prior to treatment. Unless it's an emergency, a patient has the right and responsibility to shop around and make a knowledgeable, informed decision. I'm not sure everyone who leaves a review has his/her facts straight or has analyzed the cost breakdown. Is there a billing inaccuracy? Is there a coding error? Did you address any specific billing issues with the center? As for me, I did a lot of research on the different types of surgery for my condition, asked for and received opinions from two different surgeons and checked out the surgery center before my procedure. I'm really happy I didn't go with the first recommendation I received and would definitely refer my friends and relatives to Oakwood. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. I would rate the nurses and medical staff a 5 star. THE BILLING, A 1 STAR. If I could give a -star I would. They made me pay $100.00 outstanding bill from 2003 before they would let me have my surgery on Monday, May 8. I had a procedure done back on 2013 there. When I questioned where the $100.00 bill was then and why I wasn't informed about it, I got told well it was overlooked. Come on now 2003? I was then told that it was turned over to collections, I'm guessing back in 2003, they couldn't or wouldn't tell me. I asked for an itemized bill, no answer if they would do that. Then the office administrator had the never to call me and said to due all the back and forth, she felt it was in their best interest to cancel my surgery on Monday! She is not a doctor, a nurse or any other medial professional. How in the world could she or should she have the right to do that? And I not only paid the $100.00 but also for the surgery on Monday. read more

Clean facility, comfortable waiting area. I have never encountered a more compassionate and personable staff before. Their main concern at all times was focused on my level of comfort. It was my first time ever having a procedure that required anesthesia and I let them know my level of fear about being put under. They explained my options very clearly and allowed me to make that decision without feeling pressured. I even asked if they could just not tell me when they do it and to sort of sneak it into my I.V. and that's what they did for me! I'm no longer afraid of any anesthesia I may need in future thanks to this positive experience. I've been home for a day now and am recovering well! The even called to check on me this morning. Nursing staff is great, building and furniture are dated and depressing, telephone staff has things set up for their convenience, not patient convenience. When you have a surgery scheduled, you will be prompted several times to call them. You will not be able to reach a person, just a message saying that "due to high volumes of calls ..." we can't be bothered to answer the phone, but we will get back to you in 24 hours. I don't want a call back in 24 hours, I want to be able to speak to a person. I don't want to have to discuss my surgery in front of the 100 other people in my cubicle farm when it's convenient for them to call me. Really, I don't want to talk on the phone at all unless it's something important. The kicker is that it's not important. The calls are for their convenience, not yours. The first call is to prepay your bill, and they can't even answer the phone for that purpose. The second call is to tell you when to come in, something easily handled via email or text. If there is another surgical center available for my next procedure, I'm going there. read more

First the bad. They are owned by HCA. A big corporation which sometimes means they are disorganized. Some of the phone contacts are not very helpful. The least helpful, was the billing department. A fast talking, curt lady named Renee called me and said okay you will owe before we do the surgery $1,200. I said well I need the surgery, I'm in pain and I don't have that much. The lady asked what should we do about this? I have to say well I know you have payment plans. . . She said oh would you like to do that? (Um yeah! My job is not bad pay at all but even the most responsible people don't have this much money around.) So needs improvement in their billing department!!! Possibly this is there policy but bad customer service when your product is so very expensive!!! Also the nurses or nurses assistants staff who ever called me to tell me not to eat before the surgery and all that doesn't know much about anesthesiologists that work in their facility. ( I wish I could tell you what their titles were but they weren't too good about identifying who they were either.) They only returned my calls to request a particular doctor to put me under the day before surgery. Not too good. I had to be a bit of a detective and talk to a scheduler, Lynda, about this who was able to inform me of the group they use to find their anesthesiologists. The billing department at the Austin anesthesiology group was very helpful with the requests and got one of my preferred doctors there to take care of me. Dr. Eddings-who was awesome. Perhaps this is an example of the care smaller corporations are able to provide? The good was the nurses-all very caring. The very young nurse who first greeted me was a bit nervous and talked a little too much about bleeding. This resulted in a panic attack that had me covered in sweat. Not too pleasant. I think I scared her so much that she left without doing the IV. Which was fine but I felt bad that I scared a nurse who should be used to this stuff. Not really something you should have to think about day of major surgery. What she did that was good was she got the OR nurse to come back the next time with her and she evaluated my status. Dr. Eddings gave me something to calm down and all was better after that. Otherwise the place was very professional, good operating procedures, awesome wait time, clean, nice waiting room, nice colors. Nice receptionist who worked out a better payment plan for me. Everyone I met, in person was very helpful. read more

Was going to get two shots In back for leg pain. They called and said it would be 1800 CO pay. This means 10,000 dollars for the surgery center. Hopefully there is a warm place in HELL for people that charge this much. Maybe I should quit my job and be homeless and get it for free. The care if fine. Medical staff is caring and competent. Billing is awful. First time I had a procedure here, overcharged me over $200, and it was a big hassle to get them to credit the overcharge back to my TexFlex card. Second procedure overcharged me approx. $800. Even though they electronically received payment from BCBS, it will be a few weeks for them to refund my money. Really people? You have a negotiated contract with BCBS, and should know how much to charge me up front. read more

Before my procedure I'd never had any kind of surgery and needless to say I was pretty nervous the morning of. I was treated with as much respect as one could imagine given my nervousness and everything was explained to me in great detail. The facility is very clean and the nurses are not only extremely professional they are extremely kind. I like that they all have me their names and what they were there to do. I recommend this place for your surgery needs. Its amazing how arrogant the medical profession has become. I called 4 days before my procedure to ask them what the fees and charges will be from the facility. The office manager literally laughed at me and said they would call me back. When I asked her what was so funny and she realized I was not kidding, she apologized and put me on hold and provided the information I requested. Apparently the staff in the business office at Oakwood surgery thinks its "cute" or funny when patients are concerned about medical costs. read more
