We tried the St. Elmo tavern while on vacation in Ouray last week. We loved it. We did not have a reservation, but the kind man at the front desk set us up at the beautiful bar in the tavern while we waited for our table. We enjoyed our wine and mixed drink. The tavern is quaint and lovely! The food, service, and drinks were all amazing. We had the bison empanadas, sweet corn ravioli, and linguine with elk ragu. For dessert, we had tiramisu. We stayed here over the 4th of July weekend. They had just changed owners and we got to know many of the people that worked there. They were so easy going, friendly, funny and very helpful and treated us like family. Grab dinner here and get the pork chop! The drinks were amazing and beautifully made! The room was so cool and big as well. The bed was great. I love the old building and see others comment there isn't an elevator. Yeah, that's okay! Its a historic building. Ouray is going to work your legs out one way or another. But the staircase was even beautiful! I will definitely stay here again. read more

We started with the carpaccio which was wonderful and then I had the chicken parmigiana which was amazing and my friend the fettuccine Alfredo and I got to try it and we both thought it was really delicious. Incredible place, really enjoyed staying here for only 1 night. Booked on hotels.com. A little pricing and my only complaint was there were these tiny flying black bugs/flies all over. I realize that hard to control. All over the shower/bathroom mostly and some in the bedroom. But truly a great place with lots of history. Old creaky floor well kept with amazing old furniture and decorations. Just incredible timely memorabilia all around. Great service. Breakfast included in a family style setting where you can meet and chat with all the guests. Eggs, ham, and cheese enchiladas, fruit, cereal, juice etc. we came at a somewhat hot time, so the place doesn't have air conditioning so that could be a factor for long stays in the real heat of the summer. For us the night was very cool and we put the fan in the window and the night air was amazing. Would definitely recommend read more

Beautiful, historic hotel and restaurant. We just stumbled into this hotel on our visit to Ouray. The staff let us walk around to visit the public areas. It is beautifully decorated and comfortable. The new owner is upgrading the hotel rooms and has opened the restaurant in the cellar for dinner. We had an incredible meal in the charming old stone cellar. It has a beautiful old wood bar and cozy seating. The old stone walls and bar are just charming, and beautiful. The staff at the hotel and restaurant were friendly and attentive. The italian chef prepared delicious meals. We had the homemade pasta as well as the burger and salads. Everything was well prepared and delicious. Best pasta we've ever had outside of Italy. The prices are very reasonable. We got a bottle of wine with dinner which was also reasonably priced which was not expected in a tourist town. Went for a long weekend in Ouray, and picked this gem of a historical hotel. It's like walking back in time when you enter. Aurora, the lady that helps with the kitchen, is a great cook and fun personality. David, the keeper, is informative and kind, offering input on places to visit and sightsee. If we go back Ouray, St. Elmo will be our go to hotel. read more

The two ladies that cooked up everything were so friendly. They did a great job of socially distancing everyone with Mizz Rona on the loose. When we spoke that evening there was no mention of room being on the first floor just that how did I expect you to fill the vacancy in such a short period . I explained I had just made a couple hours ago so there was no way I could have given you the seven days you requested. You were very angry and no longer wanted to talk and said YOU would call ME back in the AM. So I am sorry something was lost in translation . As an update, I want to add that we stayed at the St. Elmo on July 20th. We mailed the key on July 21st. USPS confirmed that the key was delivered on July 29. It is now August 4th and still have not gotten the $35 charge removed from the credit card as stated on the information card regarding key return. This person was so rude. The hotel is beautiful. The lobby looks exactly like the pics. If you like historical buildings, you will like this one. It's also in a great location and the Bon Ton restaurant that's attached is VERY good. Things to know: no tv, no ac. It was hot. We slept with the windows open. The bathroom tub/shower had old caulking and dirty scratched linoleum on the floor and walls. This was disappointing for the price. Things to know in COVID times: I'm pretty sure the owner/manager (David?) is an anti masker. He never wore one, and neither did the cleaning crew or the women who were making breakfast. When we arrived and got in our room, I noticed an envelope with cash in it on the dresser. This was obviously a tip for housekeeping. So...had our room been cleaned???? I took the envelope with the cash back downstairs to David and told him that it was in our room and I wanted to be sure our room had been cleaned. His response? "What do you want me to do, do you want your money back?" Uh. That's not what I asked and that's a weird response to asking if our room was cleaned. I said I wanted to be assured that our room was clean and he said "they clean the rooms." I'm still not certain it had been thoroughly cleaned, David's response was not clear (seriously, yes or no) but it did look clean. My husband went to take a shower and couldn't get the shower to turn on. Back to David we go. He comes up and after 5 minutes comes out and says he also can't get the shower on and immediately follows up with "I can give you your money back". Wow. Ok. 2nd time he's offered this. After finding the money I had looked up other hotels and the entire town was 100% booked. I told him this and he said "sorry. I guess I can ask house keeping if they know how to turn on the shower" (they did!) Maybe he should have offered that before telling us we were welcome to leave? (For the second time) The hotel offers a really good breakfast...in a small unventilated room. It has 3 tables and the tables each have signs on them that say "2 people per table and only people staying together". Ok. That seemed fine. Not even 2 minutes after sitting down a man we don't know asks to sit at our table and says "this is just how we do things, we share." Uh, no. Thanks. My husband and I get up and leave. All in full view of the kitchen staff who saw and heard it and did nothing. The signs around the hotel regarding social distancing and masks are meaningless. My guess is they were put up because they had to? My gut tells me David offered to refund us from the get go because we were wearing masks and inquired about the room being clean and he wants nothing to do with that. We had friends staying at 3 other hotels in Ouray for the weekend, all of whom said their hotels were enforcing distancing (one person in the lobby at a time, things like that) and staff were wearing masks. I was not comfortable with how the St Elmo was handling COVID. Long story short: if you are an anti masker, you won't mind this historic hotel and will enjoy the communal breakfast. You might even feel welcome there after interacting with David. If you support science and don't want to contract COVID for the good of yourself and the rest of humanity, this is not the place for you. This is really what it comes down to. If we weren't in a Pandemic, I probably wouldn't be writing this review or at a minimum, I would have commented on the hot rooms. But I do wish I'd known this sooner and I would have chosen to stay somewhere else. read more

Looks cool better as a museum, no AC no TV, no fridge, NO AMENITIES. $319 dollar mistake bed are uncomfortable, no screens on windows can only open 3 in the king room suite (facing the main street noise) no plug in for the provided fan or for today's technology, no "happy hour" as advertised, shower was my dwindling hope, nope it's a 1900 building I get it. Might be great in the winter. Asked for a VETERANS discount @$270 he said sure my discount was to charge me $319 thank you for your service. My last hope that's it HAUNTED and I can pester the ghost for my money back. Would not reccomend this place at its current price Maybe the breakfast is $250 we'll see. read more

What a cool old hotel. Beautiful decor and our room was wonderful. It had its own sitting room, two big very comfortable beds. The windows a latch was broken so it did not stay shut. We could hear the noise from the street below. The window covering on one of the windows did not close all the way so light came into our room much earlier than we wanted. The light/fan did not work in the bedroom over one of the beds. And the continental breakfast way extremely limited and only open for an hour. Love looking at the different rooms. Loved the history and the cleaning crew was very nice. Hope to have the opportunity to stay here again. read more

St Elmo was very awesome! The staff was absolutely fantastic, the gentleman that owns is so nice and honestly he had some good jokes too. Inside is like a perfect time change to the past with the vintage/antique furniture and style. The bed was very comfortable and the morning breakfast was very tasteful. The lady who was preparing individual food is an excellent cook and is also very nice as well. The location is also so perfect for Ouray. Just a hope skip and jump away from anything in town. I wish it were possible to give a higher rating that 5/5 because honestly this place is like a 7/5. Will most definitely stay here next time we come back to Ouray! read more

My husband and I stayed at this hotel over Labor Day weekend. The hotel appeared very nice, and we were genuinely excited about our stay. However, when we returned for the evening around 10 pm our room was covered in gnats. Swarms of gnats. We tried to make the best of it by covering toothbrushes and turning off as many lights as possible, but they were everywhere. Even after turning off the bedside clock and our cell phones, they were landing on our faces and arms.. basically anything not covered by covers. It was disgusting. We ended up having to drive to Montrose to stay in a Days Inn which ended up being cleaner. We booked the hotel through Expedia, so I left a review of the hotel 8 weeks later. The response was condescending, and false (they claim to have called and texted with us to make the best of the situation, which is entirely untrue. In fact, we had to get Expedia to help us), and claimed to be surprised by my late review. How odd and unnecessary? They only reimbursed us for 1 night despite not providing a sanitary place to sleep. We understand there was a gnat problem in the area this summer but our friends who stayed in a nearby hotel did not have this problem INSIDE their room. We typically love staying in historic hotels, but this was far beyond reasonable for over $250/night. Will definitely not be going back. I wish I could post my videos of these gnats crawling in the curtains, lamp shades, dead in the sink, and covering the ceiling, but the files are too big. Such a horrible experience. read more

Definitely a historic place and really cool to check out, but not somewhere I would stay again. +check in was easy and they provide private parking which is nice in this small town. I was extremely underwhelmed at the cleanliness and comfort, especially for the price tag. Decor is old ( which is their style) but feels old and mildewy...beds are the worst in terms of comfort that I've stayed in, tiny, creaky, thin mattresses and just bad! Noisy throughout the hotel ( we were the only guests under 40 which would make you think quiet) but the walls are so thin! +Breakfast was ok, they lay out fruit and yogurt and breads then made us some little pancakes and sausage. It was quaint but felt very overpriced for what you actually get. read more

My wife and I had a nice stay. The bed was comfortable and the room furnishings reminded us of a step back to the late 1800s. There was no TV in the room (it was downstairs) but that was fine with us. The breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes and ham was filling. The english muffins were a nice touch. Cereal and yogurt were also available. I wish the breakfast was available earlier than 8 am, as we stayed in August when the sun was coming up shortly after 6 am and it is sunny in the morning and typically rainy in the afternoon. I love this Bed and breakfast. I'm not a fan of the victorian era and it's floral decor but I was very comfortable at this BB even with the Victorian decor. They do have some great antiques in the rooms. My husband and I stayed in the king size suite at the front of the BB over looking main street. Choose a back bedroom if street noise bothers you. We enjoyed watching the activity on main street in the morning from our sitting room window. Breakfast was very good with a huge assortment of fresh fruit, apple pancakes with raspberry jam (made local) and sausages. There was a variety of breads, cereal, muffins, hard boiled eggs, juices and coffee to choose from also. We were quite pleased with St. Elmo's and would stay here again. read more
