This was the culminating experience of an amazing weekend's ramble through northern California. The St. George is a tiny little beer and wine joint located in the criminally overlooked treasure that is the former mining town of Volcano. Dave, the owner is a magnificent host and and all around great guy. He welcomes everyone who comes through the door as though they are a decades-long regular. He has a bottomless wealth of stories to tell and is always ready to join in a good conversation. The menu is simple: a selection of about twenty well-curated bottles of beer, and a rotating selection of wines, most of which are made by Dave wearing his other hat as an award-winning maker of port-style and red wines. Dave says that he intends to put a small tapas menu together soon, but for now there is food available at the hotel next door. No matter, the limited menu is part of the attraction of the St. George Wine Room. The focus here is not on the vile pretensions of the wine snobs and foodies, but on time spent in a cozy place with an honest drink and the easy conviviality that a well run bar provides. Here, strangers are swapping life stories fifteen minutes after meeting and generally behaving as though meeting at a party hosted by a close mutual friend. There is a tiny stage that plays host to a variety of local acts from singer songwriters to small Latin combos a few nights a week, as well as serving as the arena for one of the most joyfully informal karaoke nights this side of a Filipino wedding. The night we were there, the solo guitarist playing covers at the restaurant around the corner was maybe going to show up. He didn't. Instead, the sons of one of Dave's friends came in and played a low key duet set of intimate guy-with-guitar songs and elegant improvisations, followed by a bout of joyous karaoke. The informality of the evening's entertainment only served to heighten the homey feeling. To be perfectly honest, I would rather not advertise that the St. George and Volcano exist at all. I'd hate to see this place devolve into an antique boutique cluttered little town like the nearby Sutter Creek. Charming as that city is, the simplicity and hideaway cosiness of Volcano and towns like it offer something different, and it's places like Dave's that are illustrative of this difference. But this place is too great to keep to myself, so do yourself a favor and stop in. read more

We took the day to stroll around Volcano yesterday & thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We happened upon this little wine bar & went in to take a look - were told that a latin jazz band was playing later so we made a note to stop by. After frequenting the other local establishments I was ready to call it a day, or was that night, when the hubby said "I'm not done yet!" So back we went to the wine bar & am I glad we did! There was a duo playing guitar & harmonica & sounding nothing like latin jazz but we got ourselves a beer & settled in by the pot belly stove to hang out a bit. The latin band had not showed up so these guys just grabbed their instruments & entertained us all night! Later we sauntered outside where some had gathered & we were welcome like old friends. The front of the bar is like someone'e home patio - filled with seating & people stopping by to chat. We met the locals, the owner brought me a wonderful glass of port he had made, totally unbidden & we hung out for quite a long time, another beer, another glass of port...an unplanned day that turned out to be one we'll remember for a long time! read more

This is a warm, welcoming, and trippy little place. Was up in Volcano for a short honeymoon and found we were a little afraid that Volcano was so desolate. But then found this bar on Monday night and had a great time. Dave and Susan were so amazingly nice to us. The have great local wine, tons of yuummy beers to try, allow dogs, have great music and are just wonderful people. We ended up staying late into the night and having a great time. In fact, we were a bit sad no one was there the next night. Thanks guys for making our Monday so fun! read more

This place is just the right mix of the hometown dive bar you love, and the charm and warmth of a wine bar that you are always on the look out for. I've been in twice, and have had the pleasure of having two very, very good experiences. I met Dave, and his lovely wife Susan on the second occasion. Great people. I especially love that they encourage dogs to come in. They are also generous bartenders, and are quick with a suggestion and a sample. By far, the most generous pours for samples I have had in a minute. Maybe it's my youthful good looks or my sparkling personality, or both-- but these guys have been good to me both times I've wondered in from a day of taking in the sites, and I shall not forget it. Also, be sure to hang around and check out the live entertainment if you're lucky enough to catch it! We have been lucky to catch some great acoustic entertainment in the past, and some fun impromptu karaoke. Good times, cozy environment, and nice selection of brews and wine. Score! read more

Dave is truly a fantastic host with generous pours and delicious wine!!! Dave's "pub" as he likes to call it, is a wonderful place to enjoy a glass of wine, hang out with the locals, listen to fantastic music, enjoy some laughs and engage in some competitive dart playing. Stopped by after dinner for a glass of wine and to check it out. It's small, but felt more intimate than crowded. There were probably a dozen people listening to Nedra and Julio play blues, and it was comfortable. Service was attentive and friendly. Wine selection wasn't extensive, but Dave's own vintage was quite good and a large portion. There are more - and very good - beer selections. A very pleasant surprise in Volcano, and we'll likely return. read more

The St George Wine Room is one of our favorite hang outs. It's like sitting in Dave and Susan's livingroom and enjoying a variety of musical artists (or Pandora if no one's playing). Mondays are sort of an open-mic type thing. They're only open Thurs through Mon, so plan ahead. This is a very small, eclectic and casual place to unwind, and their hours tend to be longer than other local places. read more

I love escaping to this "backwoods" wine bar. I live in this area, but this joint feels like I am on a mini-vaca. Dave is very sweet and attentive to his customers. It is nice to see him and his wife having so much fun working together and B.S.ing with the regular's. I haven't had so much fun in so long until I came here. It was St. Patrick's and there was a live band (of course, they weren't dead). My whole family came there and we had a blast. Some of the people that come in there are quite interesting. Don't be afraid to conversate with all the locals and the visiters. I have to add that the wine Dave creates is great! Easy to carry a buzz with being that the alcohol percentage is higher than most wines. He creates different flavors and I enjoy them all. read more

Tourists love it as you can see........locals living nearby, not so much. It can be very noisy and crowded and several friends who live nearby tell me it's not the greatest neighbor to have in such a tiny town. Have to admit that really does affect my opinion of it, especially when the noise is disturbing while we are trying to watch a play in the outdoor theater across the street. When I've been there the owners were super friendly if sometimes a little forgetful. Quaint and rustic it certainly is, so if that's what you're looking for, this may be a place you'll like, unless of course you're trying to get some sleep in the hotel next door. read more

We were recently road tripping across California and stopped for a few days in Volcano. The Wine Room was recommended to us as the place to be on a Monday night in the sleepy little town of Volcano. The place is pretty small with a stage in the center and you feel like your hanging out in someones living room. They have an impressive selection of great beers, and we tasted port from the owners personal vineyard that was delicious. We happened to be there on an open mike night and we were completely blown away by the talent of local Volcano-ans. This is my kind of place! read more

I was in Volcano for the first time and had the opportunity to go to the St. George Wine Room. It was a night I won't soon forget. Susan and Dave are the nicest warmest friendliest people and there wine bar reflects that. It was like going to my best friends house. They made made us feel right at home. They were serving a great selection of wine and had a huge selection of beer. It was live music Monday and we got the opportunity to listen to Pat (I hope that is his name) play his guitar and sing. Just when I thought the entertainment couldn't get any better Bonnie got on stage and sang her little heart out. She has the most amazing voice! If you have the chance to get down there I highly recommend it. I have never experienced such extraordinary people! I can't wait to visit my new friends and finish my dart game. read more

Cute spot. Owners are very friendly. Makes his own wine. There was live music, which was nice. Best part was that there are random instruments scattered around the bar for anyone to pick up and play along. Nothing intimidating, just tamberines, and some clinky wood boxes. Very fun. The Wine Room in Volcano is a wonder. Eclectic with various musical artists that paraded through out the night. The flavor exceptional among the wines available. A 65 year old vine Zin made any Napa Valley wine cower and hide in the corner. This is a small pub, with atmosphere you would dream of. The town is wonderful as well as its people. If you drive thru ... you will most likely stay the night. read more

The wines are good, Dave is great, and the locals/regulars are all so friendly. Sadly I didn't get to meet Susan who sounds lovely, but we will definitely be back. I got such a great vibe from Volcano, best weekend getaway ever. read more

It seems cliche to use the words rustic and charming to describe this wine room, because it is so much more than that. Having said that, The St. George's wine room is very charming, inviting and well you guess it...rustic! We stopped by for a beer after attending a local theater production across the street and Dave made us feel like family. Not like VIP, but family. I was chilly so I nixed the beer and tried the old vine zin which was bold in flavor; a good balance of sweet and bite. And it warmed me up immediately-read high alcohol content! Dave offered up generous samples of his petite syrah and his port which had been aged four years in the barrel and was undoubtedly a HIT with my group. We watched a talented young lady sing karaoke as she took request via shouts from my raucous group. We joined in as an impromptu percussion section as Dave handed us drumsticks, cowbells, tambourines, and wooden blocks from off the shelves which double as part of the room's decor. My favorite piece is this super cool squeezebox. I really resisted from touching it. I will be returning here and maybe bring some friends for a round of drinks and karaoke.
