We where coming on a walk home and it was the only bar in this neighborhood. I guess that's why it's so highly priced. We came in to this dive bar which we usually like . (Nothing fancy at all" We asked for a glass of Chardonnay which the bartender didn't think they served and then I asked well do you have any white wine? He said yeah but only box wine. One he confirmed it was Chardonnay after going to look at it we said ok we will take it. He served us half of a glass of this and charged us $15 for two half glasses of cheap warm Chardonnay out of a box that we had to ask for ice to chill it up on our own! I will never frequent this place again. Not because he didn't know if he had Chardonnay but because he didn't even care that he was clearly over charging us for warm boxed white wine!! read more

Cool dive bar on Monterrey - I would go here more often if there was more parking. The first time I was here Rudy was the bartender and the guy was super cool with a great attitude. Since then I've seen Patty several times, even though she understands only about 1/10 of what I'm saying, she's always smiling and pours a good drink. And if you are looking to buy a Honda, please buy it from her and give me the credit. Also, I've met some really cool people here, a nice young couple, and one time there was this guy that has the most amazing wine cellar compared to most restaurants!! I stopped by the Friends Bar for the first time after living in the neighborhood for over 20 years when I saw that they were reopening, and I can only say that I wish I'd been a regular all along. The staff and clientele were all so welcoming, and mostly local faces which was great to see. We played a few rounds of pool (only 50 cents/game!) and also enjoyed the outdoor patio, recently re-done. Rudy, the bar tender on duty, made us cocktails of his own recipe which were fantastic. How did Evelyn refuse me service when I didn't even ask for it in the first place? This is what happened; my friend (who is a girl) and I sat down at the bar. Right after a few guys walked in the door and sat down at the bar as well. Evelyn (the owner and bartender) walks past us and goes straight to the guys. It was obvious we were there first, but she chose to ignore us. Both my friend and I started asking her why she ignored us and she made up some story about me slamming the door on her foot...? How would that ever happen if she is always behind the bar? Anyway, she proceeded to yell at me and call me a "F***ing Bi***". If you are the owner of a bar and you want people to respect you, you do NOT call them that. My friend and I have had numerous problems with her when we go there. She always complains that we get guys to buy us drinks and we never spend money. Why does she care? She is still getting business and people are buying drinks? It sounds to me like she is a bit jealous because she is past her prime. This incident what the cherry on top and we will NEVER return. read more

I suggested to my buddies that FRIENDS bar is where we should go for the after party and continuing celebrating one of my friends birthday. Usually, Evelyn and Rudy would be working and we totally didn't expect a rude bartender to serve us tonight. We ordered cognac shots with cocoa cola as chaser backs. The bartender brought us soda water as chaser and when we politely stated that "we asked for cocoa cola and not soda",. she threw a pissy fit at us, collected the soda water glasses, poured out the soda water and gave us coke with the same glass. After rudely PASSING/SWINGING the glasses over at us, she still murmured,. "you asked for soda,. i give you soda, *ROLL EYES and walk away",.. mmm lady,. I just read the other reviews, and think that I must be going to some other dimension of a bar that exists along side the Friends Bar that I know. I wish that the spot had a juke box with a wider range than a small chunk of the early 1990s. I did not think that the staff was that friendly- I actually was waiting for some one here, and got the evil eye. Hmmm..
