I'm an avid thrifter and this is one of the better thrift stores I've come across. Everything is pretty reasonably priced for what it is, especially compared to Goodwill and other thrifts. They definitely do price certain items a little higher (name brands, new with tags, etc.) but it's not as terrible as most other places, and still a place I'd recommend to find some treasures on a budget. The store is clean and nicely organized. I went on a Thursday afternoon so it wasn't too busy and not super loud/hectic. Can't speak for weekends or other popular times. The store is predominantly womens' clothes. They have a good variety in brands, prices, and types of clothing. They have a good mix of vintage and more "modern, trendy" brands and styles. The child and men's section is a little on the smaller side, so if you're primarily looking for that, you won't have as much luck. Though I am on the younger side, I do enjoy how this store doesn't try to cater to my age group or "trends", so they attract a more considerate customer base in my opinion. I was given a bed frame. After a while a volunteer convinced me I don't need it and better buy a bed then she came and collect that frame . Buying clothes here is also almost impossible with their rules and they treat customers . It's hard to believe their goals to help the needy people . read more

It's ok. I found a nice Adidas sweater for $10...just a lot of random nothing special. No discounts (color tags) & they have a senior discount 1x a week. NOTE: When I showed them the YELP $5 coupon they didn't accept...they said it wasn't valid?? Huh? Yeah, won't be visiting again. read more

Quite small compared to the Fremont location, but with a little bit of digging, you might be able to unearth something. Seemed pretty picked over when I visited today, but that's most likely because the holidays are just around the corner. Seems like housewares were priced better than clothing, especially for seasonal items like winter jackets. My friend Shanna found a North Face jacket without a tag and was quoted $40, even though the other North Face jackets on the rack were $20. I found a vintage beaded mint green silk sweater for $7. Selection does not seem to contain too much vintage, which is more of what I generally hunt. Here, there's a lot of dated fast fashion and business casual. **During Quarantine Review: April 2021** This is a good mid-sized community based thrift shop with a good assortment of clothes (both men and women). There was one small high end rack (Burberry was the only one I recalled) and they were all secured to the rack, but the vast majority of items were in the affordable and mid-tier range (ie. H&M, Forever 21 to Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, etc). They had shoe/boot section, dresses, jackets, coats, pants, tops for women and a midsize mens section. I think during my visit blue tagged items were 50% off, but you can't double dip with promotions. At the time I think yelp offered a $5 off your purchase, so depending on your treasure hunt you'll need to be mindful on which is the better bargain! I would come back again! It's the cutest little thrift shop. A little hidden gem on the edge of the downtown San Mateo area. As it goes with every thrift shop, you never really know what you're going to find. But it's definitely fun to sort through. I've seen my fair share of modern brands and ones that have seen more time. Despite having older clothing they usually have good quality, wearable clothes on their rack. Definitely worth a visit or two! read more

Tried to donate some stuff. But they are very areogant and snooty. They picked and chose thru my perfectly acceptable second hand goods, and gave back the things they decided wernt good enough for them. One was a backing sheet with a soke discoloration. And other were a while set of plastic bowls and cups. Then they gave back the empty cardboard boxed and made me dunp them. Im trying to give you stuff, at least be grateful and say thank you. This is a fun thrift shop in San Mateo. It's pretty large and there's a lot of inventory. Prices seemed reasonable for the most part, at least for the clothing section. They have mens and womens clothing, as well as shoes and accessories. I didn't really see too many high end labels here but still fun to browse. read more

I have shopped there for furniture and found very nice items at reasonable cost. The items were delivered free and they were large. I have purchased a dining room table and chairs, a china cabinet and some assorted glassware. I have never tried to donate anything, I have a nice twin headboard, almost brand new (brass and white enamel), and a colonial-style mirror I might see if they would take. I attempted to donate two large boxes of clothes yesterday. They were high quality, many with the original tags attached. I believe sales value in a thrift store environment would have been a minimum of several hundred dollars. Everything was rejected because (A) "pet hair" was seen on some of the clothes. Also it was noted that (B) some of the items inspected had stains on them. Very few items were examined before both boxes were rejected. (A) there was pet hair on some of the items. (B) I do not retain stained clothes. Any "stains" would have been nothing more than dust accumulated during storage. I was aware of both situations but assumed that the thrift stores do routine laundering of donated items. Apparently not - I was told that donated items needed to be ready for immediate display. That clothes are not laundered before putting them up for sale is alarming. I took my donation elsewhere and it was gratefully accepted. To allow them to be so dismissive of donations, this thrift store must be doing extremely well financially. I have long donated to Saint Vincent de Paul in Redwood City and never received this kind of treatment. I went to San Mateo as I understand Redwood City is not currently open. read more

FOR DONATIONS ONLY -- I feel mean writing this, but every word is true. I STRONGLY caution anyone wanting to donate to St Vincent de Paul through their pickup service. I scheduled with them 2 weeks in advance, and they provided a 6-hour pick-up window. Since I work, I asked them to narrow it down. They said if I called at 10 AM on the day of the pickup, they could provide a 2-hour window. The morning of the pickup, I called 3 times before they provided that 2-hour window. The first 2 times, a very "efficient" woman hung up before I -- speaking quickly and clearly -- finished my sentence. A different lady assured me on my 3rd call that their driver would call me 30 minutes in advance so I could return home from work for the pickup. *After* the 2-hr pickup window, the driver called me and said he would be there in 40 minutes. I confirmed: "in 40 minutes, at 3 o'clock?" He said "yes." At 2:40, I received a call that the driver had left my building without calling me, because I was not there. I explained what had happened, and that I was moving out in under 36 hours. Their response was that their driver's truck was full and he was on his way back to them. If they'd told me weeks ago they didn't want my stuff, that would have been cool. Flaking like this put me in a real pickle since I had just over 24 hours to move out, and I still had to work the next day (Friday). There IS a happy ending. Two weeks ago, I donated the first half of my stuff to Ecumenical Hunger Program. They showed up pretty much on time and were nice. I called again in desperation, and they were thrilled to get my microwave, furniture, china, clothes, etc. to give to needy local families. They leveraged a cancellation to do a next-day pickup for me (unusual and very lucky!). So all's well that ends well. :) ** I've only ever scheduled a pick-up at these 2 places (both found through http://www.hoarders.org/dps.html after searching for "Silicon Valley donation pickup"), and they are night and day. I could see St. Vincent's working out for someone who's home a lot, and who doesn't need stuff gone by a certain date. read more

This store is mostly clothes and the majority are outdated and worn. There is a house hold section but it is not stocked with much and it is a mess. If you're looking for a random plate or glass you'll find it but there is nothing special. The art is ghastly and overpriced. They have shoes but they are worn and cheaply made... seems as if a lot of merchandise is directly from China with Chinese price tags and extremely low quality. It's strange. read more

I recent found a love for thrift stores and while we were in San Mateo, my boyfriend decided to take us here. People talk about how smelly this place is, but I honestly didn't notice a single thing. I dunno.. and plus, each day of the week, they have a special sale! We went on a Wednesday and that was the day for 10% off adult clothing! First impression: This place is full of furniture! It's actually a pretty nice thrift store. Lots of space to move around with things everywhere. Only real problem is that some things had no prices on 'em. I hate to go up to the register and ask how much something is only to decide it was way too pricey for me to buy. :( Now, thrift stores are a hit or miss. Either you find something or you don't. Now this thrift store has become one of my favorites. They have a LARGE media section. Lots of video tapes and CDs. DVDs = not so much. However, it was my find that got me so excited. I had found two DVDS (Kiki's Delivery Service & Spirited Away) for only $14 altogether! And there were barely any scratches on the discs! (: Also, they have a lot of Disney videos like Mulan and Pocahontas. Some prices on things are kind of crazy, though. There was a wooden table that had scratches and marks all over it and it was priced at $200! Outrageous!... But we must remember, the money is going towards a good cause. read more

I have not shopped here but I have made several donations it's quick & easy ! Highly recommend if you have clothes or stuff you would like to donate. All the stuff I've donated have only been worn a few times or are new. I've read other people's comments saying they would not take their donations well it was probably junk , so throw it out & don't make someone else throw your trash away for you. read more

The main entrance and room has clothes, some bedding and a bedroom set, next door is the housewares stuff, next room is the furniture and they last room is their backstock area. Clothes are tired, didn't notice much designer wear. Do carry bridal gowns. Place has really fallen off since the TERRIBLE manager came in. NOwhere near the same amount of items in the store and most of the stuff is now clothes. When I was looking around the store, I noticed an autographed picture of Gordie Howe (hockey player) with the picture frames for 5 dollars (clearly written on back of photo). I am a big hockey fan so I take it up to the front to purchase thinking I was going to go home with a cool item. As I am pulling the money out of my wallet, the manager snatches the picture out of my hands and says "this was in the back office how did you find it?" I was very disappointed when I tried to donate 4 large bags of clothes to this location. Unlike going to a Goodwill, the woman insisted on looking over each item before accepting anything. I was a little surprised by this, but I guess they need to ensure that it's not just a bunch of garbage. Nothing, in any of these bags, was more than slightly worn, at most. Anything old or damaged would've been thrown away by us. The woman went through the first bag, and pulled out a pair of almost brand new tennis shoes (which my daughter no longer wore). I asked her why she took them out, and she said that they were the only thing acceptable. I questioned what she meant and she replied that if items couldn't be sold for a profit then they wouldn't be interested in them. With so many people in need of clothing I could not believe that that would be their stance. I stopped her from looking through any more bags and told her I'd find some other way to get them to the needy. She seemed relieved that I lessened her workload. Shame on you St Vincent de Paul! You should be doing whatever you can to help the needy, not just what is necessary to make a buck! I will never donate to you again! read more

I had the worst experience trying donate clothes here. The two ladies working the donation center were extremely rude and only took two things out my bags of clothes I had. They basically just look at the tops of my bags and basically said no sorry we cannot take anything else. They told me they could not accept any of my clothes after I asked them "why can't you take the rest of my clothes." That was all. No real reasons. The clothes I was trying to donate were nice clothes too, nothing dirty. The lady behind me ended up just leaving and taking everything back into her car because "it was a waste of time" and honestly it was. I was trying to donate some clothes and that's all. Worst customer service ever. I literally stood at the fitting room for 36 mins (I clearly had a lot of time on my hands) till someone finally came and unlocked the door for me... When I was done, the lady at the front who was flirting with some guy the whole time took one of the items (3) off my hands without saying a word and retagged every single one besides the one that was marked for $24.99. I'm not sure how to rate this place as usually there are rude people taking donations. Back when my mother died we essentially gave them almost her entire apartment and all really nice stuff but we were told we were bringing too much and to not come back. As far as my stuff, if it doesn't look like you just pulled it off the rack in a store forget it. One cat hair and it's all rejected. Approved of clothes during Covid was fine but not lamps and shelves and things like that which you would think is more sanitary. This time instead of the usual grumpy woman I got a younger girl who was pleasant and asked me if I wanted a receipt. Of course I gave her 11 shirts that were never worn, fully buttoned and price tags on some of them and an Ann Taylor jacket. I didn't want to go through any drama so I took my leather coats, cashmere coat and bags and bags of other clothes & unworn shoes to the Goodwill who was happy to take them. They have a drop off location in Redwood City with an attendant and I filled up an entire large rolling bin. I would've been happy to give them to Saint Vincents as they try to help people get back into the working world etc (hence the button down business type shirts and Ann Taylor jacket) but I didn't want to take the time to have someone pick through every piece. read more

What is up with Thrift Stores these days? I stopped by here for two reasons: 1) I love thrift stores and 2) I needed to search for a white elephant gift for a party I am attending this weekend. I saw a lot of overpriced merchandise.....not quality vintage clothing for cheap, but just JUNK priced high. I saw a dirty, cheap, fake fur coat here priced at $45....$45 for a gross coat? No way......Who buys this stuff priced this high anyway? A person looking for vintage certainly wouldn't because it doesn't qualify and someone looking for a deal would be better off buying a new coat at Old Navy or Target. At least then it would be clean and remotely stylish. read more

I like St Vincent de Paul charity and have donated here before albeit the hours of when they take donations are not convenient. There have been times when I have found some very beautiful things-but still pricey, such as a suede Ferragamo handbag that was practically brand new and in beautiful condition. I paid $125 so it was not a bargain, again figured it went to a worthy cause so I was ok with it. Some items are way overpriced. I noticed things I have donated in the cabinets still sitting there after many months for this reason. Not too sure I like the new set up. The store does not seem as full as before and there has been more than one occasion when a customer goes up to the register and there is a price discrepancy. I can understand if I had only seen it happen once, but it has happened several times. I don't blame the sales people, it is the management's fault in my opinion. read more

Regarding donations, they pick through items and make all sorts of comments about the things you bring in. One would think they would be happy with receiving donations but they are picky. I prefer to donate to Goodwill, which doesn't have the same grumpy attitude or sass that the volunteers at St Vincent have. Also the receiving hours can be erratic and leaving things/dumping when there are no attendants around is against the law. Regarding shopping, now given that they are so picky about what they will or won't accept, why is their store so full of crap and overpriced junk? It's a little bit like what came first, the chicken or the egg...but I seriously don't understand how they can move their merchandise when the prices are over-inflated. You would think they would sell them cheaply since their cost for these items is zero. Their kitchenware items are overpriced -- I needed measuring spoons and measuring cups for one of my projects, and the price difference was so slim that it was better to get those items new at Target. Outside of furniture and big ticket items, I'm not sure who is shopping here because prices are better at the dollar store or target - they need to seriously consider who their demographic is. Sorry people i cant give my favorite thrift store a good review after my last vist a week ago.I guess theres been a change in management because the store didnt look or feel right. The prices were way off . It took all the joy and fun out of the experience. Anything cool was 29 dollars to 500 dollars. WHY DO THEY THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA? I left feeling sad with one pathetic item from the $1 rack. I feel responsible for my last review which was so positive . The store is OK. To start the art work is completely overpriced and really ridiculous. They have a lot of pieces marked over $100 dollars and it is ugly and ill-fashioned. Next, they have piles of merchandise lining the clothes racks. None of it is organized and it is just heaped on top of the clothing and you have to randomly pick through it to even know what it is. I've seen popsicle makers, random toys, as seen on TV items, tennis balls etc...its just a mess. The women's clothing/shoes- it doesn't turn over that well and you see them same items week after week (if you frequent like I do) I don't think I've recalled a sale in the place. The same can be said for their shoes. No turn over the same pairs are there every time. Purses- basically an unorganized mess of cheap stuff...lots of used makeup bags and really poorly constructed bags that are inexpensive made in China freebies but they are charging $8 dollars for. I found a vintage Italian bag there once and it was over $25 Men's has not too many options, 2 long racks...again doesnt really turn over. Housewares is really sad...it is a jumbled mess.
