i had my first stand up open mic about a year ago. the group was very friendly and supportive. I came back to do another set a few months ago and had fun! Have you ever walked in on a private conversation and not been able to escape without being rude? Lol that is exactly what happened with my friends and I at this comedy club. The only truly funny thing that happened was we didn't know what was part of the show vs. what was backstage drama that was being brought in-front a live audience. Now was this show worth the $7 ticket? Eh maybe. It was like watching a group of people who had intimate inside jokes, and you're the stranger who politely laughed to avoid the uncomfortable atmosphere of not know what was going on. Overall, it wasn't a terrible night! Very clean bathrooms, good energy from the room as a whole. I would come back here (perhaps for a different show) but at the very least to redeem my opinion of this place! read more

STAB! is great for standup, improv, and sketch comedy shows!!!!!! It deserves more than a few confident exclamation points. I had no idea what to expect as far as this venue was concerned when I attended a recent Scumbag Alley show, but I knew Saul, the comedian hosting, from his other shows at Punch Line and Laughs Unlimited. He's an old friend of my BF's brother, and he's hilarious af. There's a joke he does comparing himself to the Lady Who Killed Selena, and it makes me guffaw like a complete dumbass every time I hear it. So anyway, STAB! is a very intimate venue in that it is smöl, with enough chairs for I'd say about 25 people and a bit of extra standing room. They did announce they are working to expand the space and get a license to offer more adult beverages coming up here in the not too distant future, and that's always exiting to hear! As for refreshments currently offered, I noticed sweets, sodas, and waters for sale at a small kiosk next to the stage. The folks that work here were all very kind and knowledgeable about the various shows and schedules. Scumbag Alley ran about an hour, with sets scheduled before and after it, and a very good time was had by all. We had a group of 4, and the chairs were mostly filled by the time the show started. I would recommend getting there early before your show, and be prepared to be called out by comedians. There are so few chairs in the room that the odds are ever in your favour. Been here a bit recently. There's a wide range of shows both in the theater and the ones they host on their twitch stream. Not all were my taste but the effort put into everything is commendable. The shows that I enjoyed were killer though. I was in actual tears laughing so hard. My favorites are the titular STAB Show on Friday nights and Scene Kids winch I believe is 2nd Saturdays. Over all a theater I'll be returning to for quite sometime thanks to the humor, COVID awareness, Good pricing(you can get a ticket for the whole night!) and general good vibes! read more

We were part of the audience on a Friday night which runs a little late for us but we'd like to go back sometime. Seating is limited but they said they're trying to expand. They have coffee and concession-type snacks to purchase or you could bring your own, I believe. There are different segments to the show; you could stay for one or all. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon STAB! Comedy Theater on a Saturday night while looking for something to do. They were hosting an improv troop at 9 PM for $6. There was also a podcast being recorded afterwards at 10 PM (but we didn't stick around for that). The theater itself is small - maybe no more than 20 seats and a stage that couldn't be more than 15 feet wide and 10 feet deep. But the intimate setting made it that much more fun. The performers were funny and you can tell they take their work seriously (while still having a good time). This is the coolest little comedy venue ever. A truly hidden gem (a bigger sign or flag, or a spotlight would be cool to more easily see from the street maybe?). Now that I know about this place, it is definitely on my every-time-i'm-in-Sacramento must visit list. Visited family in Sacramento this past weekend, so I looked up Sac events on yelp and came across 2 events that looked cool at STAB!. One was live music and then a stand up comedy hour involving apples--lol! We ended up going to the apple event and it was so hilarious, charming and interesting. 2 comedians go head to head trying to get 3 judges, each with an apple in their mouths, to drop the apple while laughing, each drop is a point. The comics we heard were so funny but only 1 point was given out!! The venue is cozy! You might be like us and wonder why they don't let anyone in a few minutes before the next show--there is literally no way for crowds from one show to mix with incoming crowds for the next, you get in through a narrow walkway through an art gallery/studio/store? so don't get miffed by being told to wait---go to the brewery at the corner and have a beer (very cool place, they had a band playing, i had a good tasting pale ale). Regular folding chairs for seating and very cute/rustic vibe, string lights, a little counter where they sell snacks (no liquor--yet) and just a very cool handmade, homey vibe. STAB! Comedy Theater is the brick and mortar version of a comedy writing panel podcast of the same name. If you've never heard of a comedy theater version of a podcast, you probably live in Ohio or the Southern part of Montana or you grew up without a Dad. STAB is the most intimate of theaters, not quite a blackbox as the backdrop is multi-colored tiles that you're certain the owners slapped up themselves. A few rows of likely donated chairs and circles of smoking comedians out front make it feel like a creative epicenter; a spot filled with performers who have funny ideas and two owners who seem committed to nourishing them. It's fucking cool. This is definitely an alternative comedy type theater, so if you're coming planning to see a high energy comic talking about hating their wife you'll be disappointed. The shows are different, eccentric, provocative and sometimes just weird. The comics are depressed, autistic, angry and very, very funny. Since I'm a fan of weird that comes in all those shapes, it's important to mention that when it's packed, and everything is aligning as planned, and the audience is laughing- the spot feels pretty special for everyone. They don't serve alcohol (I think maybe BYOB is in their future), but heading next door to New Helvetia in-between shows almost adds to the fun of the experience. Nothing about it is normal; from the comedy, to the people, to the owners, to the lack of food and drink- and that's why it's worth going. If you bring a date, your family, a gaggle of co-workers, they will think you are INSTANTLY cool. Don't do it for the shows, do it for the alt hipster clout. Going to STAB! is PART of the Sacramento experience now. You don't really KNOW Sacramento until you know this place. You don't KNOW the comedy scene here until you've seen their shows. And FYI, you can still see the STAB! writing panel show most weekend nights there around 10:30 p.m. (a nice little cherry to the night) which, in my opinion, is still the most stellar thing they do there. The one complaint I have is that the mirror in the bathroom is too high for people who just happened to be short. What if they have crumbs or something more vulgar on their face? If I gave it any less than 5 stars, I'd be lying to myself. Last time I lied to myself, it didn't go so well. You're like "I'll grow to love this person," but then 3 weeks later, you're wishing you listened to your intuition. It's hard out there. You don't want to over-commit, but you're still trying to impress your grandmother, who may not have much time left. Every time you visit the old folks, they say "why aren't you married yet?" Went to me second and third shows tonight -- and they were great. The intimidate showcase of talented writers and the funny family vibe made for a light-hearted laugh hearty evening. From discussions about meat to martini cigarettes, a was thoroughly impressed with Stab's improv show and follow-up podcast recording. I needed to update my review. I was at a show recently and noticed that NO ONE was vaping during any of the performances. I did notice that someone in the audience left very quickly after the show ended and I proceeded to follow him. I noticed that he quickly removed a VAPING DEVICE from his pocket and proceeded to HUFF AND PUFF on the vaping device. Very happily, NONE of this nonsense happened inside (for lack of a better word) STAB! I remain pleased that their commitment to a vape-free comedy scene continues and prospers. Come and buy all the tickets y'all. I want the owners to be able to supersize their value meals because they are so flush with cash. I do hope that they continue to book more alt-comedy. I'm glad they have resisted to booking puppet comics because, as most people know, they are a bunch of looney-bins who don't understand how to properly BUMP, SET, SPIKE a good comedic story. One note for improvement: If you had bottlecap soda candy (remember those? The flavors were so good - root beet, cola, grape, orange, and strawberry. The sweet, chalky taste always made my tounge wet itself a little. They should sell bottlecap soda candy. The name implies what will eventually happen to you if you stumble into this "comedy theatre" more than a handful of times I got accosted on the sidewalk and refferred to as a "pasty mothafucka" and robbed by more than one of employees. Some say that title has already been claimed by the American River but don't believe everything you hear on TV folks. THIS is it. It doesn't get better than this. Come for the laughs and stay for the intimacy. This is a great, intimate theater that consistently showcases interesting and unique comedy. There is a spacious and warmly lit outdoor space in the back to socialize and get some air before, between, and after shows. During my last visit at the theater I saw local improv teams The Licorice Boys and G4G, and a live recording of the STAB! Podcast. Both improv teams were hilarious and an example of the great talent coming out of Sacramento. The STAB! Podcast live recording is truly an experience that is worthy of a night out. Went on the soft opening weekend. The place was literally still under construction - and probably will be for a few more weeks. Ownership is clearly invested in making this theater a success and it shows. We caught the stand-up show. There were a number of solid local comics, some of whom you'll recognize from various shows at the Comedy Spot and some you won't (like the 19 year old kid who had a surprisingly solid set). They don't have a license to serve booze yet, so you'll want to hang out at New Helvetia for a bit before the show (just a couple doors down). We're very excited to see where this theater goes. Sacramento finally has intimate theater!!! This is a really unique space in a special part of town. Stand up, improv and podcasting all in one intimate space. (Seriously, it only seats like 30.) It's surrounded by awesome restaurants and an amazing local brewery. There is a killer little art gallery up front. This area didn't have a space like this and it's so exciting to finally have one. I don't know where all these positive reviews are coming from.... I was there last week with my mother and a larger man wouldn't even acknowledge us as we entered, instead interrupting the guy who was helping us like we weren't there. I was told to speak with who I suppose was in charge there about my issues upon leaving, but before I could speak to him I witnessed him belittling others around him. FOR ASPIRING COMEDIANS/OPEN MIKERS: I went there and signed up for the open mic and it was a nightmare from the very beginning. You should know a few things if you are going to go to it. For one, the regular open mic people are extremely competitive and hostile. The first person kept asking for questions from the audience and not even telling jokes, so I asked one to get things rolling, and she's like "oh if ur so funny why don't you take the mic!" Super indignant. After that, almost every "comic" proceeded to go up, stutter about the low energy in the room and how they forgot their bit, and then proceed to take unfunny potshots at my appearence or just outright insult me until their time was up. It was no exaggeration stuff like, "haha. You have a comb over. You look wierd. Ur weird." Like, I would've laughed at myself if it was clever (and I still did in an act of good Will) but it was all just stuff like this. It was bizarre. But here's the kicker: after all that, I go up and do my set. I'm prepared. I hear and see some people laugh. I feel good about it. Next thing I know, I see the host standing side stage and I take that to mean my time is up, so I thank everyone and begin to exit the stage when he mutters under his breath, "yeah, none of us wanted to go home or anything" and I had no idea what he meant. Well it turns out that he shines a cell phone light in the air when your time is up. He made no point of that so I had no way of knowing. So later, this guy comes up, and of course forgets his material, and then turns to me and literally starts verbally assaulting me about "going over the light" which is going over your time, which is when I began to realize what had happened. He literally didn't tell a single joke, and it was so kinda violent that I'm pretty sure everyone might have been uncomfortable for a little while. I went to this place pretty prepared and with a good attitude, and I was unfunnily insulted and shouted at the entire night by people who either forgot their material, or even apologized for their own material as they spoke it. In conclusion: this establishment is an enemy of the arts. read more
