This was a good meal. Place is nice. We were going to a show at the State theater. So it was very convenient. Cocktails were good. We sat at the tables by the bar so the menu was different. It had the burgers. I do not think the main restaurant offers that. I was waiting at the bar for my daughter to arrive and the cheese plate was out. And it did not smell good. Also I kind of felt pressure to order the Wagu steak which is $70. Could have lived without that. On a positive note. Burgers were good. My daughter had the flat iron steak. Wow, wow and wow. First...the place is so quaint. It's decorated tastefully and comfortable. The bar was inviting and sophisticated. The bartender made our experience remarkable. Highly recommend the cucumber gimlet cocktail for those who like me have a sweet tooth and prefer lemon drop, mojito-esque drinks! (Cucumber martini was good as well but too strong for me). Servers were all extremely friendly, and I enjoyed my (huge) burger very much. Sweet potato fries * are * pretty good but bear in mind they are unconventional... large, not too crispy, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. (Even though I liked them I felt like they weren't really a match to order with my burger... felt too dessert-y perhaps?) I also feel obliged to comment on the hilarity of the high scale restaurant juxtaposition to the egregious stain on our waiter's suit. He was so nice I take away no stars for it, but it was indeed amusingly unprofessional. Ditto the paper menus, felt awfully out of place! Nonetheless, we all really enjoyed the food and company. Loved it here! Been here a few times over the years, never had a bad experience or bad food. Nice wine, great bourbon and ryes too. We had a tasty pine nut ice cream for dessert. For the last 8 months during COVID, I've made it my mission to try burgers within the NY/NJ area. I've tried over 100 burgers up and down the area and have a pretty good handle on the quality of burgers within the area. I have never, not just within the last 8 months, but in my life, had a burger of such high quality. Of the last 100 burgers, none of which I felt earned a review. But I went to my computer and made a Yelp account just to review this burger. I have never in my life experienced a burger like this. I'm ending my year-long burger search because I know that this is the peak of that mountain. On top of that, the service was unbelievable, the owners came over to chat and were personable and made sure we were taken care of, the Wagyu beef was phenomenal, the service was top notch and the prices are extremely reasonable for the unbelievable quality. I'm unsure about getting a burger again in this pursuit, as I will always compare it to this place. read more

My husband and I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Stage Left Steak this weekend. We were celebrating a work promotion and knew there was no better way than to partake in their infamous burger. We were so impressed by their new Covid regulations and felt very safe while dining indoors. The service was exceptional as always. My partner and came here for dinner for his birthday last night and had such a nice time (and that is coming from 2 people who worked in the service industry)! Our server Zach was a perfect match for us as he was laid back yet very attentive and knowledgeable! After hearing it was my boyfriends birthday, the restaurant even sent over an extra dessert which was an extremely nice touch. I had the smoked and seared trout which was delicious, however I do wish the smoked trout was served warm. My boyfriend had the strip steak with the fat tasting on a hot salk block which I HIGHLY recommend for meat eaters. It was a fun interactive way to get a variety of flavor combinations. This place is known for having the best burger in NJ. At one time I believe they held that title, but it's just not the same anymore. I used to frequent this place when I was in college and was a huge fan of the burger but it just doesn't taste the same. It was pretty chewy and not as juicy and flavorful as I remember. You also used to get fries with the burger, now you have to order them separately. The fat sliced fries are pretty good still! New places like Agricola in Princeton has them beat with the burger. read more

Came here for a company outing a few nights ago and wasn't impressed with the food at all. Having dined at steak houses such as Del Friscos, Ruth Chris, and Steak 48 stage left is mediocre. For the price, the presentation of the food was not desirable. My steak wasn't really flavorful. The lobster Mac and cheese was burnt and crunchy. The creamed spinach was watery. Wow. What a fantastic experience all around. I took my boyfriend here for our anniversary (he's a big steak lover). From the start, everyone was very attentive and knowledgeable. Our server in particular was great. He answered all of our questions and gave his input on the menu. We went with Caesar salads to start, which had white anchovies on them. If you enjoy a classic Caesar, I recommend this one. We decided to share the Tomahawk steak medium rare (about 36 ounces), which was so tasty! Our server brought out a hot salt brick which works best with fattier meats, searing for just a few seconds to get maximum flavor. Would definitely do this combo again. We did get garlic butter and blue cheese butter to try with the steak but honestly, it had so much flavor on its own! For dessert, we ordered the creme brulee which was delicious. Our server brought us champagne to toast with and the ice cream/sorbet tasting to enhance our celebration! So nice of them to make our night so special. The food is amazing. Service is out of this world. Atmosphere is romantic (very old school steakhouse feel). For a special occasion, I highly recommend going here. We will definitely be back. read more

The service was excellent starting with the hostess to the bartenders, waiters, bus boys, and owner, Francis. This was truly a wonderful dining experience. The food was delicious and the service was incredible. The owner is a very gracious host and lovely conversationalist. The appetizer was stuffed, fried squash blossoms. They came out piping hot. The crust was crunchy and the cheese inside warm delicious. Dinner was the strip steak. It comes barely seared and sliced for easy cooking at the table. A very hot salt brick cooks your steak to your desired temperature right at te table. I had the gravy and horseradish butter with it and I can not explain how fantastic the gravy was. It is something right out of my grandmas kitchen! Sides were a stuffed backed potatoe and asparagus. Dessert was a crème brûlé made perfectly. The atmosphere is very elegant inside, and outside is delightful this time of year. It can be a little noisy due to inconsiderate motorists but the whole experience was worth it. I am a customer for life. read more

We went here for our anniversary on June 1, 2017 it was a Thursday night we have gone here for dinner several times before and it was a beautiful place that was not the case tonight. First they close the beautiful back dining room and we had to eat in a loud bar area the music was so loud we asked them to lower it they said they would, they never did. The had a lot of workers but no one doing a thing but standing around talking. We where never asked how are thing. We asked 3 times for a dinner roll when we got one it was over cooked and dry. I went to stage left steaks with about 8 people after a bait and switch at harvest moon for restaurant week. I called them and asked if they could seat about 8 people in about 5 minutes the person who answered the phone ask if they couple put me on hold so they could speak with their manager and came back on and said yes. We walked over and were seated promptly at a large table. Some of us were a little under dressed in my opinion but they didn't give us any trouble. We sat down and had a few rounds of drinks and just had a great time. The bread they made was out of this world there was a plan roll and a roll that was a special roll. I forget exactly what was in the other roll but I remember wanting to order it for the next special event I have. The staff here was helpful. The food was pretty amazing, they had a few drinks specials that we tried that were good. The desserts we had were amazing, I had the bread pudding and it was spot on. This place is a little pricy but I would definitely come here for special occasions and for restaurant week again. read more

Hitting a Show next door at the State Theatre in New Brunswick we decided on of the 2 upper end Steak Houses close by in this case "Stage Left". Which is directly next door and easy walking distance to the theatre. Under what is I assume temporary construction scaffolds from the building next door we are promptly seated for our 6pm reservation. Place is in my opinion a little bit on the don't know what to call it so i will say Dingy though some people would say old feel I thought it needed an upgrade. They have bar area and seating to the left as we enter but we enter the dining room on the right. 1st off the table top is rocking back and forth like its off its axis which took several staff to figure out how to fix it. The tablecloth was not refreshed from the previous patrons or it wasn't washed properly as it contained "ROCK SALT" which is part of their signature. Salt thing they do with their steaks. Last but not least the chairs at the table we not all of the same style which either represents a lack of coordination or a design look that makes no sense whatsoever. I might also point out my chair was broken and needed to be replaced so I go back to my original concept the place is 'dingy". Wine list is completely, and utterly overpriced and ridiculous value is nowhere to be found. A "QUARINO" no clue what that means later explained a larger than regular pour house Cabernet is $20.00. Hot rolls very good with butter presented nicely. NO WATER offered during entire meal guess we are camels. Menu is steakhouse and all that it entails though there are some specials, and fish and non-steak options even a pricey burger. We start with house cut applewood bacon $12.00 two slices of bacon cooked well done not ordered that way. It was VERY GOOD BACON but on flip side it was. Strips of bacon no sauce so though tasty completely price wise overrated. 2 entrees 8 oz Flat iron $28.00 "Ridiculous" topped with garlic butter plus $6.00. For what it is, it's very good but again price points make this hard to swallow. 12 oz dry aged NY Strip was very thin, cooked properly and good not great. Was very gamey and I like dry aged meats. Though again at $42.00 a tough pill to swallow. $12.00 side of whipped potatoes were delish, but I keep going back to the issues of value vs price. Passed on coffee as we were off to the play. Service was solid all evening aside from the water missing or offered but In short place needs a cosmetic makeover and value for quality simply doesn't get it done as I have no problem spending it when it is worth it, but this knee capper does not warrant a return visit no matter how convenient it is to the theatre. dinner at Stage Left surprised me- after reading the mixed reviews on yelp, it wouldn't have been my first choice for eats in new bruswick... but luckily, i wasn't the one picking the place. talk about being blown away by yumminess. we skipped wine (unusual for me, especially on a thirsty thursday... but i've had enough bevs this week. gotta leave room for the weekend), and opted for sparkling water instead. next time will definitely attack the wine/cocktail list. started with the mushroom salad- it was delicious. the crisped carrots on top added a great textural component to the dish, and the flavors worked very well together. main course was wagyu flat iron steak with polenta on the side. the steak was a fantastic cut- probably one of the best i've had. came seared barely-rare and sliced, with a salt brick on the side so i could finish it to whatever doneness i wanted. the salt brick gave the steak an awesome flavor, so i didn't even touch the sauce that came with the steak. playing with my food at dinner? always a win. the polenta was creamy but bland, which paired well with the flavorful steak. the mushrooms were decent too. the portion size was perfect- not too much, and not enough to feel overstuffed. the 16oz strip came out perfectly cooked to a medium, and the whipped potatoes were a good pairing. the steak was seasoned well and didn't need a sauce to mask the taste. desserts were creme brulee and a mixed berry gratin. the creme brulee was perfect, but the gratin was way too sweet for me. we split a pot of earl grey tea, which i found to be disappointing- but maybe i'm just picky with my teas. Stage Left mostly loses points for the service- our waitress had a bit of an attitude and it felt like she was doing us a favor by telling us the specials, taking our orders, etc. The other staff were friendly though. the ambiance is pretty outdated, which is a shame- it's a little uncomfortably stuffy. an upgrade in these areas would bump Stage Left to 5 stars. read more

I'm a huge fan of Stage Left. The Cosmopolitan here is one of the best you will EVER find. The chocolate martini has a life of it's own. The wine list is a force to be reckoned with and their recommendations are always spot on. Start there. The foie gras is really good. I had never had it till I tried it here and it was so delicious! I have tried it since and never been as happy. The fillet is a great "never fails" type dish. It's nice and smoky and so tender! Pretty much anything I've ever had here was amazing. Last time I came here I splurged on the tasting menu and was absolutely delighted. I really recommend this! I'm a sucker for a lava cake but theirs is outstanding - Valrhona chocolate with Tahitian vanilla ice cream. How could you go wrong? The cheese course is to DIE for and I always order it. In closing, I will say this about the staff. I've never seen a staff so well trained and so absolutely knowledgeable about their jobs. Every plate hits the table at the same time followed by an explanation of exactly what it is and how to eat it if there is a perfect way. I have respect for a wait staff that knows what they are doing and how things should be executed properly. I've never once received anything less at Stage Left than the utmost care and attention and it is the reason I keep returning. read more

I have had a lot of good meals, many really good meals, but how many truly great ones? I can think of five including a truly amazing experience at stage left. I consider myself a bit of a foodie, and have dined at notable restaurants from coast to coast. The experience I had here is equal to or better than any of them. I would not say it is a "chef" driven restaurant (although food was simple ingredients prepared well- just how I like it), but instead I would say it is a passion driven restaurant. From the owner to the busboy, to the server the passion amongst all is palpable. You can hear it in the way the food is described, you can see it in the service provided, you can taste it in the food and even smell it in the amazing selection of cheeses ( from all over the world inclusive of one of my all time favorites from Texas of all places). In short if you are in New Brunswick, scratch if you are within 100 miles of New Brunswick, stop in and enjoy a truly special dining experience. read more

We had wagyu on a salt brick and being I had read so much about the burger, we tried that too. Both were very good. I would absolutely have the wagyu on a brick again. So my brother and my girlfriend conspired sort of behind my back to take have a a dinner out. My brother choose Stage Left because he hears it advertised on the radio at his grandmothers house. So as soon as I found out where I was going I pulled up yelp and started reading. I want to correct something's other people wrote. 1: The decor is NOT outdated. It's a 20's Art Deco theme. I'm not sure how stupid you have to be not to get that. 2: Some spirits and cocktails may take a few minutes to come to the table. The owners also own the restaurant upstairs and some of the high quality expertly crafted drinks have to made there and brought downstairs. 3: The staff was amazing and accommodated our every desire including creating custom menus with my birthday on them. WOW! The bartender Mike, although he looked 18, was incredibly knowledgable and had plenty of great recommendations at hand. I had a great time. The mushroom salad was awesome. The burger got great reviews. I had the salt brick beef. It was great. I got a free desert. The 9 cheese plate was amazing. Everyone tried and liked and disliked different cheeses. It was very funny. The ice cream taster was great coffee was served in this oversized mug and it was great. I had a fantastic time. We came to Stage Left for our anniversary and for my birthday. It was a very nice summer night so we sat outside, which was nice. To my surprise, the inside of the restaurant was empty on a Saturday night...so we definitely did not want to sit inside awkwardly by ourselves. Here are my thoughts: Cocktails - they appear to have an extensive selection of fine cocktails, liquor and wine. I got one of their specialty cocktails called The Algonquin. It was good, but not great. The food was good - some of it was very good and some of it was uneventful. My $69 bone-in fillet that I asked for medium-rare was served medium-well. I was not happy about that. My truffle mash was very good, but that's hard to mess up. My wife ordered the scallops for her first course and they were the best part of the night...they really were excellent and flavorful. She ordered salmon for her main course and it came over a salad - it was fresh and nice, but there was nothing special about it and it was bland to say the least. The service was somewhere between poor and just OK. For a high-end restaurant, we did not feel like they were attentive or engaged in showcasing the menu, offering recommendations, and just lacked energy / enthusiasm. They didn't serve us bread until we asked for it and they never once over the 2-hrs asked us how our food was or if everything was ok. And then at the end of the meal, I had to ask for the check because they never came by to check in on us. Mind you - the inside of the restaurant was empty, so there was no excuse for the lack of attentiveness. Also, one drawback of sitting outside was that there is a lot of foot-traffic in front of the restaurant. There was a homeless man harassing another couple for money during their dinner and no-one from the restaurant intervened even when it was clear that they were being bothered. It was embarrassing and we felt bad for them. Dessert was very good - we had the chocolate molten cake and some type of coconut custard dish...both were very delicious. Cost - we knew going into the dinner that it was going to be very expensive and we were ok with that. It was a special occasion and we don't mind paying for exceptional food and service...but this place unfortunately did not offer either. It ended up being one of the more expensive meals we have had in NJ. All in all - it had potential but it fell short. My boyfriend had been wanting to try Stage Left for quite a while, so we naturally decided restaurant week in New Brunswick would be a great opportunity to try some of their dishes without breaking the bank. I have to first note that we were not impressed with the restaurant week menu (only two choices for each course except dessert with one measly choice!) but we figured "how bad could they be?" As we looked over the menus, we inquired about perhaps doing a wine pairing with the restaurant week menu, as the similar tasting menu had one. The waitress told us that there was no sommelier on the premises which seems bizarre for a restaurant with a wine store and $2000 bottles of wine on their menu. So she recommended a $50 bottle of wine that would pair well with steak and pasta; her "favorite" bottle of wine. As she left to put our order in she greeted another couple in the dining room with the specials of the night. Apparently we were not worthy of hearing them. Another waiter brought us bread and butter. Both pieces of bread were hard as a rock and the butter looked like previous diners had reached their knives into it and buttered their bread first! According to the bread waiter that is how they "pack" the butter in their fancy butter dish. First course: Shibumi Farm's Mushroom Salad - mushrooms are unique and high quality but lacked flavor. I could not taste the bleu cheese or the leek puree. After every bite I took I felt like I was eating weeds from the garden on top of mushrooms. The daily soup was a Corn Chowder with Bacon and Truffle Oil. This was very good. Second course: Wagyu Flat Iron Steak (this was a $20 upgrade). It came out very rare with a salt block that we could "cook it to our liking" on. I would have preferred that the chef cooked it how we ordered it with a little salt and pepper. The steak had no flavor whatsoever. Baker Farms Garlic Chive Pasta. This should have been called Baker Farms Parmesan Pasta. My first and only bite tasted only of parmesan cheese and extremely undercooked pasta. We promptly sent it back and ordered the Grass Fed Flat Iron Steak (what other choice did we have?) About 15 minutes later, we received the steak and it was seasoned so heavily with pepper it was inedible. They also slathered steak sauce on half of the steak - the dish looked very messy. The waitress could sense we were unhappy and took back the second dish of the night. We requested the check as we were no longer interested in the ONE dessert they had to offer. Berries Gratin. Overall, the service and food was exceptionally subpar. IF the manager had come over to us and offered us a free meal to make up for the terrible dining experience we had that night we would have definitely declined the offer. read more

I don't even know where to start. I have been coming to this restaurant for years have always loved their burgers, up until last night. I ordered a burger medium well and when it came out, I cut into it and it was mostly rare. I sent it back to only again receive a rare burger. At this point I had sent my burger back twice. This is when the manager came over. I was so disgusted at how I was treated by this arrogant man. First of all you work in the customer service industry, sir you really need to brush up on your skills and learn how to better service your customers. He told me that he would not take my burger off the check even though I didn't eat it because it was undercooked, twice. The kicker was when he then proceeded to tell me I shouldn't come back. I was appalled! Aren't you supposed to make sure your customers are happy? If i like my burger medium well, I don't understand why I can't have it cooked that way? I chose to come to this restaurant when I could have easily gone somewhere else, which is really what I wish I did. But then, instead of trying to diffuse the situation and make sure I would enjoy the food, the manager was just plain disrespectful and nasty. Maybe you should have spent less time sitting down at the table with your friends and actually tried to do your job and make sure your customers were eating and were happy. I have been to this restaurant on several occasions and today was by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had!! I'm being extremely generous by even giving them two stars today. I decided to have burgers with my girlfriend and the night started with the waiter spilling water on us. Then it got even worse when our order was screwed up. We ordered our burgers Medium well and they came out rare!! Now how does a place that is known for its delicious burgers mess up on that one . Then to top it off we were treated like we had the plague . I know this somewhat an upscale restaurant but it isn't nice to treat your guest like they don't matter especially to those customers that keep the business alive. I will start off by saying I have not eaten here but instead hosted and dinner for 70 people. Working with Stage left leading up to our event was a breeze as our attendance numbers grew in size they were able to a third space to accommodate us. On the day of the event we had a few young ones that needed to eat while the cocktails were still being passed around. The staff were able to put the extra order in and have the food to the kids before the adults even sat down. Wow, wow, wow. I dined here this week with a friend. I had bought a gift certificate at a charity auction for a dinner for two, including an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Sometimes when you show up to redeem one of these, the staff treats you like a second-class citizen (or worse) - but at Stage Left, there wasn't even a hint of this. I had a filet mignon that was cooked perfectly, and the molten chocolate cake for dessert that was bar-none one of the best desserts I'd ever tasted. The staff was phenomenal - we did not order drinks, just water, and the staff attentively refilled our glasses regularly. The various courses were presented oh so nicely by the staff - and the chef brought out a "tasting" of tuna tartar for us before our meal! What a wonderful dining experience. read more

We came here to celebrate the end of my summer internship last year and had a great dinner. Everyone got the tasting menu with the roasted organic chicken (quite suculent and not drowning in olive oil), roasted fingerling potatoes, goat cheese salad (love the walnuts and arugula!), salmon tartare (received compliments of the chef! very fresh and perfectly tender), and hazelnut bread pudding (just the right amount of sweetness and hazelnut flavoring), topped off with a cappucino. This place is really top notch. The service is great which you would expect. They are letting you order from Catherine Lombardis also which is nice for family members that don't love steak. We had a special app cornbread that was out of this world good. We also split a wagyu so everyone could try. This was amazing and it being on a salt rock to cook was fun. Split the tomahawk that was cooked to perfection. Parking is a bit of a walk. A block or two. But overall worth the money. read more

Ambiance is great, waitresses attentive, and nice paintings. Wine list is extensive, but all also expensive - could use more budget conscious choices. However, greeter came across as a little snooty/dismissive when we excitedly said we were going to a play.... she snipped that they normally require 2 hours before a play, but they sat us anyway. We heard great reviews about their burgers, so we ordered those. When they came out they LOOKED great. However, ordering a medium (and 2 med-rare) - all three were very very uncooked - thin outer shell of each mini-oval loaf looked great but surprisingly 90% inside of the each was raw, wet and cold. While the restaurant did offer to cook them more, we have a play to go to so we left 90% of 2 burgers untouched wet red masses on the plate as the 2 people just could not stomach it. Also, only cheese choices was only cheddar and blue, could have more cheese choices. Wont ever order burgers again here. read more

It is rare that the owner of a restaurant will help you determine what you would personally enjoy at their restaurant. Here both owners are very friendly and extremely food and beverages knowledgeable but also fun and approachable to all levels of customer. Everyone that works there is personable and fun to talk with and they know exactly when to leave you to your conversation. The bar 10! The food 10! the service 10!
