After about a year of not getting my hair cut, I decided it was time for a change. With some extensive research, Stage seemed like a trusted place I could try out for a haircut with balayage. Ed was my stylist and I cannot say anything but positive things about him, the staff and salon. Every client that walks out of here looks incredible! The process was a bit long (about 4 hours but they make you feel more than comfortable with complimentary drinks!) and honestly I feel that the extra charges for the toner is reasonable as my total came out to be less than $200. Every other salon I researched (that had some mediocre balayage/ombre pics) costed $300-$600. I can't understand any bad reviews or negative experiences people might have had here because the staff is beyond sweet and I can't stop raving about what an amazing job they can do. I've never faced humiliation and discrimination like I did at this excuse for a salon. Ed and Merlyn teamed up against me to make it seem like my request to bring up my highlights to the crown of my head (because my hair grew over the past two months, of course) was out of this world. They focused on the rest of my colored hair despite me continuously insisting that I only wanted highlights touched up at my root. That's what we're all looking for during these summer months... a blonde highlight refresher. They could not understand this concept and proceeded to try to get me to sign a waiver- basically signing away my rights to respectable service. I've never been asked to sign a waiver to touch up roots. It's really not that hard of a process. They took turns trying to charge me extra for such and such, and even after I agreed to all of their proposed "necessities" Merlyn refused to provide me with service. She not so discreetly removed the 50-year old rag from around my neck and said she could not help me. After an excruciating hour, she decided she could not actually perform her job. DO NOT TRY to get your hair done at this place with a GROUPON DEAL - They will not like this and you might end up like me, out on the street! If it wasn't the Groupon that turned them off, it may have been my ethnicity or even the length of my hair. I just returned home after visiting the salon to let them know about how poorly their dye job was on my hair. I have been getting my hair done for years and never had an experience this bad. My hair naturally is dirty blonde and now is ORANGE. I showed pictures from Pinterest and their yelp photos for what I wanted. I made it abundantly clear which color/balayage I wanted. The parts that were dyed look splotchy, and when I mentioned this to the hair dresser, he used a hair gloss which ended up adding $60 to the bill. After the gloss was applied I told hair dresser I was not happy and it was orange... he said it was the lighting and would change after I washed it. It obviously did not change. As for the hair dresser and his behavior, he was completely aloof and inattentive while doing my hair. He reused foils, and went out for smoke breaks four or more times - coming back smelling horrible and leaving me to be the ONLY one in the salon. I went back today to talk to them and they said no refund... I didn't want to have them try to fix it after reading countless reviews of other people saying the SAME thing happened and their hair got burned. The hair dresser said he was willing to fix it but when I mentioned the small burn on my scalp and asked what they use in their color he said nothing was on my scalp... when I showed him he pointed out my acne and said that's what was on my scalp... NEVER going back. The hair dresser here will burn your hair, leave you alone to smoke cigarettes, and comment on your personal appearance when you go to tell them. read more

I went here with my best friends to get our hair done. I went to get a balayage done. Merlyn did a pretty good job with my haircut. However, my hair had a few light spots and left a large part of my hair pink/red. So my hair turned out red/pink and orange. I called a couple days later since they instructed me to not wash my hair so the gloss could take effect. I noticed the color spots that day and called to see if I could get it fixed. Bevis told me that there wasn't a lot he could do about the color, but he would try to even it out. He kept showing me my hair while wet to which I kept telling him that I couldn't see the difference since the hair was wet, so it looked darker. My hair is curly. He then proceeded to dry my hair in all directions making it into a frizzy afro. I asked if he had a diffuser to which he ignored and continued to tumble my hair and flip it around until there were no curls at all. He said that was it and left me sitting in the chair. I was so embarrassed to leave like that and can't believe that as a hair stylists, they'd just leave someone in a chair looking that crazy. When he saw my shocked face, he had the nerve to ask if I didn't like my curly hair. To which I responded that my curly hair has never looked like that. He walked away and I just stared at myself in silence. I looked much worse than when I came in. It doesn't seem they really know what they are doing. I've never written a review before, but this was so horrible, I hope to spare another. If I could leave zero stars, I would. These people are rude, unprofessional, and most importantly not good at their jobs. They botched my hair in two ways, 1. color, 2. type of highlights, and are now refusing to finish fixing my hair, despite having promised and scheduled an appointment to do so. They just called to say they won't be fixing the chunky highlights, which they promised to fix after a 2 week wait (due to processing). I trusted they would make good on their end of the promise but whatever, it's probably better for me not to come back here and just pay someone who knows what they're doing to fix my hair. I have been getting my hair highlighted for 12 years, and have never had a worse experience. I asked for thin+natural ash blonde highlights, and stated that would like to avoid chunky + streaky highlights. What I got was thick, yellow, chunky highlights. I was very disappointed after we finished, so they did another round of gloss which turned my hair grey. It was better than yellow, but still disappointing. This whole process took 5.5 hours, and these guys were rude rude rude. Their dingy, stinky towels, reused foils and paper-towel-less bathroom also get notable mentions for being unhygienic and stinky (the towels smelled like used gym towels). Since we're on a roll, I'll also mention that the girl who washed my hair managed to soak the back of my shirt and to splash purple shampoo into my eye and then stick a dingy towel on my face. And the guy who botched my hair, Stage, didn't even stick around to discuss how to proceed with a fix, and instead sent over a colleague to convince me that my hair wasn't yellow and that they can fix it by adding a gloss to make it more blue toned + then I could return for the second part so they could add thinner highlights between the chunks. Blah, this kinda sucks but whatever, I guess you live and learn and sometimes pay $150, and spend 5.5 hours to learn a lesson. For me, lesson learned: never return. read more

I purchased a Pulsd deal for balayage + haircut and will never buy a deal like this ever again. I'm honestly still rattled from my experience at Stage NYC. I showed pictures of what I wanted and the end result was not that. My hair turned out to be this streaky brassy orange color even though Eddie said it was ashy. When I went into work the next day all of my coworkers were shocked. So I went back to try and get it corrected a couple days later but it wasn't much better so I told them I wasn't happy and they said I could set up an appointment with the founder to get it right. All of a sudden the person helping me puts his cell phone up to my ear and its the founder on his phone. He starts telling me that he has cameras in the salon and watched the tape and I picked the hair color and it's my fault and he doesn't want to help me. It was such a horrible experience. I was visibly upset but they were so set on being right and proving that everything was my fault that they totally disregarded me as a customer and just attacked me when I wasn't even being combative. I come here because of Ed Tong. He has been my hair stylist for many years and follow him as he changes salons/locations. Ed is very friendly, honest and helpful. He listens and gives you what you ask for. He takes time to explain and advise you if you have questions. Because of his skillful cut, it allows my hair to look and feel good when I leave the salon but, most importantly, it allows my hair to grow out very nicely. The layers just fall into place nicely as they grow. I usually get compliments on my hair. He takes his time to cut people's hair so you will have to wait a bit longer but it's worth the wait. There was a time that Ed changed salon and didn't notify me because he lost my number. I was devastated. For a year or two, I had to try SO many different salons and all could NOT cut like Ed. I came here back in March to get a complete transformation. My hair is dark brown naturally and I wanted to change the color to silver. Keep in mind that this was not my first time doing this so I knew it was possible with the proper hairdresser and treatment products. The hairdresser which was a guy, I do not remember his name came and offered me the service. He did two treatments on my hair and it went terrible. I will add photos to demonstrate my traumatic experience. Since the photos are self- explanatory I will add that the hairdresser left the bleaching product in too long, about 30 min at least each time, and I told him it hurt a lot. He told me not to worry and that its going to be fine, because my concern was that I didn't want my hair to fall out as I've heard horrific stories salon stories from hairdresser that have had employees that had no idea what they were doing. However, I trusted this guy because he presented himself as the colourist of the salon. At first, when he finished he was telling me to leave the salon and leave my hair to air dry, I insisted that I wanted it blow dried because it would look smoother after such a process. He insisted again on me to leave the salon with my hair wet, then again I told him no and that he needed to provide the full service I was paying for. When he started to blow dry my hair I could tell by his body language that he was trying to cover something up in the back of my head. Luckily, I had my friend there to inspect the outcome and all of the sudden he just screamed. He saw that the hairdresser had burned off half my head, and all the way into my scalp!! It was horrible and the worst thing was that the hairdresser was insisting on having me paying for this service. He showed no remorse or empathy or guilt for what he had done. It was a horrific experience and I do not wish this upon anyone! It ended with the me having ti shave half my head off because my hair was so extremely burnt and damaged. His co-workers knew something was wrong too, but nor did they say anything or check up and with the process. They even knew that the bleach was in way too long and instead of recommending me to stop the process to not damage my hair by getting it burned off they just let him proceed. They were also there for the whole time it took me to complete the process and was paying attention. If these are professionals and properly trained then why didn't anyone say anything? As a customer you trust professionals and especially because you pay for their service and expect it to be completed properly. Worst hair experience of my life! I came to see Merlyn for subtle light brown highlights and a cut last week and came out with bright orange hair and an unfinished haircut. I showed her pictures of what I wanted, but she didn't pay much attention. When I saw my hair after she had colored it, I was shocked to see almost all of my hair was orange! I told her I didn't like the color because it was too orange. She said it was because it needed a gloss so I agreed. The gloss didn't make much difference. When I said it was still too orange, she became really angry and rude and walked away and never spoke to me again. She didn't finish cutting my hair. Her coworker Ed tried to help and was nicer, but he kept trying to convince me that my hair wasn't orange and that it was just the lighting in the salon so I let him put lowlights in it. It did not fix it. At this point I realized I was only damaging my hair the more they tried to fix it so I paid and left. They charged me for every fix that didn't work. I got home and realized my bangs had not been cut because Merilyn had stormed off so I had to trim them myself. The color was still so orange that my coworker started laughing the next day when she saw it. I realized I should never have paid after they did this to my hair so I called and emailed for a refund and they never called me back. I finally called again and the manager was very rude and refused to refund me the $200+ and insisted my only option was to return for them to try to get it right the FOURTH time. Eddie did my wash and blow dry and he did a very great job, But the salon itself was very bad, i.e., 1. They are not now - temporarily as they renovate their other location - in same location they were when I had prior wash, blow dry done. They told me this location is only temporary as they renovate prior location. I think this temp location isn't good. unlike their former location on Ave B, this location today was truly very, very, extremely dirty & there seemed to be no ventilation. 2. regarding not enough ventilation AND too many people in such a tight area, even through masks I was breathing in what smelled like heavy ammonia like fumes from all the color clients going on at the same time I was getting what was supposed to be an aveda spearmint and lemongrass wash, blow dry with scalp treatment but definitely was not. There are no windows in the back room they have for Stage NY Clients, I truly got sense there is no ventilation at all. i.e., I got a headache fr the fumes within about 10 min (thankfully once I got outside in fresh air it only took about 10 minutes to go away but still ..) I spent the whole time breathing in what seemed like ammonia when, again, the Stage Head Spa experience I was signed up for & used to get would have me taking in nearly all natural spearmint and lemon aveda products. I also was charged a few dollars more than the price listed on the website which is just odd. The stylist himself, however, was great, def talented and did better than anyone could expect given the condition of this salon itself. I hope they're own space is renovated and they're back to their much healthier, and very much cleaner salon space soon. read more

I've lived here for two years, and have tried a couple places, but left feeling meh about my hair, also incredibly poor. My hair can be really annoying about lifting color, so I've had my fair share of truly terrible hair dos (anything from a bad cut, color, and even having to cut 5 inches of hair off because my stylist was talking on the phone through my entire visit and left me under a dryer for too long). Needless to say, I've developed a bit of anxiety when I get my hair done! However, I can sincerely express I have never felt more comfortable and safe than when I visited Stage Salon. Eddie did a fabulous job with my hair. He was an excellent listener, and I could tell he really paid attention to what I was going for. He walked me through the plan without me asking, and checked in through each step, which was incredibly appreciated and eased my nerves. My hair looked great, but stayed true to it's annoying self and didn't quite lift perfectly the first time, so Merlyn fit me in in very short notice to tone it again. I want to be clear: this was not due to stylist error - my hair clings on to red like crazy. There was no point during my visit that I questioned Eddie's ability or knowledge. When I came back in, there was no judgment, just complete kindness and patience from Merlyn and Eddie. It was also complimentary, and I find that level of customer service to be very rare in the city. Eddie toned my hair to the perfect color. Merlyn styled it, and gave me great tips for curling, while also cracking me up - she's quite funny! I'm so happy I finally found a salon I love, and I will never go to another one as long as I'm in New York! I live just a few blocks from the salon and decided to try for a walk in today and was not disappointed! I wanted to have a balayage and trim but figured since it was last minute I'd just have to stick to the cut for today. Diego agreed to do both as well as partial highlights to give it a natural look and it only took a few hours in total. I stumbled upon this unassuming salon on Groupon and I am so glad I did! I was in the area and had a bit of time to kill before I had to go in to work, so I decided to go for the balayage & blowout deal. I was so grateful they accommodated me as a walk-in and let me know they would try their very best in the 3 hour time constraint I gave them. Megumu, my stylist, was very sweet and professional, listened intently about the look I wanted to achieve with balayage and explained how the pigment of my hair would look with such an effect. I was hoping for very bright highlights, but because of the dark tone of my hair, the balayage would only achieve honey/caramel highlights. So that I would be able to make an informed decision, Megumu offered to do the balayage on an inconspicuous test strip of hair. I was so grateful she did, because it helped me to decide that I wanted to stick with my natural hair color and forgo the balayage process altogether. Instead, I opted to get my haircut. Megumu washed/conditioned and massaged my scalp, then cut and blew out and styled my hair. She consulted with me carefully on the look and length I desired and meticulously trimmed away. I could tell she was professionally trained as she took her time and clearly aimed for perfection. I was floored by how affordable the entire service was, a fraction of the price charged by other swanky NYC salons for the exact same service and treatment. The first time I went to her, my hair was orange and uneven from a dye disaster, and she was able to not only even out the dye but also re-do the color entirely to something ashy and sophisticated. Ever since that first appointment, I've not gone to anyone else and, as long as she stays in this country, I will follow her for many years to come. Like her namesake, she's an absolute wizard at anything hair and color-related. Even my thick, hard-to-color Asian hair is not a problem for her, and I always leave the salon super happy about the color and cut. My baby sister tried this place out about a month ago, and came home with a bomb-diggity haircut. I decided to follow her lead, and made an appointment with Merilyn when I came home to NY for a visit. Called Sunday afternoon, and got an appointment on Monday. Awesome. When I showed up for my appointment, Merilyn told me that I actually made an appointment for the Hells Kitchen location. Merilyn was super apologetic for my mistake, and we made another appointment about an hour later. I felt bad for making her feel bad, which says something about their customer service (which is pretty dayam good). So at around 2pm, I went back to Stage for my haircut. I showed her two really different cuts, and we went over the pros and cons of each one. The really short cut would require an annoying amount of maintenance, so we opted for a choppy medium length bob that would only require 3 steps: 1) decide which way to part your hair; 2) blow dry upwards, 3) then give it a bit of serum. Her hair cutting method was unique, to say the least. It was one part Pollack, one part Kandinsky. She went at my hair at interesting angles, and a part of me began to panic. The panic was for naught, because when she was done, my hair was really freaking amazing. It was exactly the way I wanted it to be. A lot of hair stylists cut your hair because they want to leave an artistic mark on your head. Merilyn cut my hair to my specifications, and did it incredibly fast. Prior haircuts at other stylists required a certain grow-out period for the look to settle. This one was great out the door. The haircut was ridiculously affordable for the East Village ($35 for wash and cut), and if it means flying back 4 times a year to get a cut, then so be it. She's really freaking good. While this salon doesn't provide drinks for free, it does provide prompt service, a smile, and respect for how you want your hair. Brava all around. read more

Came here post-COVID during phase 2 of reopening in NYC for my second time getting my hair done with Eddie. Eddie did such a fantastic job brightening up my blonde and did exactly what I asked to enhance my grown out old balayage. He is so professional and the salon did all the appropriate measures for social distancing. Everyone was stationed more than 6 ft apart and they were constantly constantly cleaning the space all day. I found this place off of Groupon and then I called to make an appointment I showed up at 1:30 I didn't leave until about 6 o'clock. The end result is my curls are completely killed because he left the bleach on for at least an hour. I asked for a balayage and I ended up getting more of looks like an ombré. I just hate it. read more

Down to earth, non pretentious hair salon downtown. I stopped in as I needed a hair cut badly just to see they had time to take me. Right away Merlyn helped me. Great hair massage and wash as well as exactly what I asked for in a cut. I am pretty easy when it comes to my hair so it was great that it came out exactly as I asked - long layers cut off the dead ends. She didn't push any extras on me and made me feel like I have been a client for years. It's no frills when you walk in but the service is perfect without making you broke by the time you walk out the door! Not sure why simple haircuts for women in nyc cost an arm and a leg!
