We went tonight for dinner and clams. The man gave us our table and for the next 20 minutes we sat there. No one offered a menu, a drink or even a I will be right there. A few waitresses looked at us but just walked right passed. I waved my hand to one but she continued walking and didn't return to our table. Very disappointing. Just had another great meal from Stahley's! Due to the virus shutdown, we ordered takeout for the first time in 42 years of enjoying Stahley's wonderful meals at reasonable prices. OK place to go for a drink and diner quality food. Lobster special, black gold steak, chopped sirloin, veal parm all are OK, about what you would expect from your local diner. Spaghetti can be a little soggy sometimes. I got a cheese steak sandwich one time and it tasted like supermarket frozen chip steak with catsup on it. I should say that I grew up in the Lansdale area where real Philly cheese steaks and hoagies are sold. You have to hunt around in the ABE area to find a good Italian sandwich spot. (former Brass Rail raved about their steak sandwiches too, I guess it's what you are used too). Service can be good or terrible. I always try to sit at the bar, less of a chance of being ignored. Service staff is composed of family members and hired help. If you are lucky you may get someone hired from the outside. Family members take turns disappearing out back and sharing their FB posts with each other. I have walked out unserved more than once while watching them giggle to their phones. Try not to look at the kitchen serving window. You may see your order sitting and waiting for pickup for 5-10 minutes. That would be upsetting and would spoil your visit. read more

I live in California and always make it a point to eat here when I'm in town. I was with my family and friends. We were still talking and finishing our drinks when our waitress came up to the table to complain that she did not receive a large enough tip. I understand how hard waitresses work; however, it was inappropriate for her to come back to the table because she felt entitled to more money when we hadn't even finished. No wonder I have a thing for divy bars. I grew up in them. Rowhouse basements in Schuylkill County with questionable liquor licenses got me going at a very young age (but they had play areas and Coke machines in the back!), and then neighborhood bar-restaurants kept me going until I evacuated the old Eastside 'hood. Stahley's, the Eastside institution, was everything you wanted for cheap food, cold beer, mesh bags of steamed clams, video games, pool, and maybe a glimpse at the pantheon of aging high school sports heros bellied up to the bar. Great bar pizza with a thin white flour crust and lots of garlic powder, crunchy and greasy fried seafood, and gooey Italian-style cheesesteaks. The menu updated, slowly, over the years, but never betrayed its roots. Our family probably grabbed a meal here once a month through most of the late 70s and early 80s, and I still have a perfect recall of the layout of the place, the dim lighting, the smell, and the taste of that diner/bar food (which, really, seems to be one thing Pennsylvania has that nobody else can quite match). I also remember one of my last visits, on Christmas Eve '93 or '94, when they still poured pitchers at 11:45 so an old friend and I could catch up while I was in town for the holidays (although they made sure we got out of there not too long after midnight). You haven't been to East Allentown unless you've had a pitcher at Stahley's. Get on it. read more

The she crab soup was not edible. It had a nasty taste to it that was beyond trying to describe. It almost tasted spoiled. Cheesesteak did not have enough sauce. Love this place! With this in mind, its hard to write a good review after tonight. Renee is an awful waitress. She was rude and super distant. Didn't listen to our requests and made us wait for one of the sandwiches. She didn't even apologize for the absence of the order at all. I hate to see this lovely place have such a miserable energy. She spent the majority if our time in the restaurant hootin and hollerin with another table, while we were neglected. When we did ask her for anything she was super short and off putting. As other reviews have noted, Stahley's has been around for a long time and there's a reason for that. They've built a reputation for consistently good food/drinks at ridiculously cheap prices and have a long-established popularity around the area. This place is like walking into someone's finished suburban basement circa 1975, complete with paneling, dim lighting, and red naugahyde bar stools. Lots of TV's as well broadcasting mostly Philly sports. The drinks here are cheap ($3.00 a pint Guinness!), the staff is very friendly, and the food is consistently good. They have excellent burgers, cheese steaks, wings, and other kinds of standard bar fare. The menu is actually pretty extensive, the steamed clams are another popular item. I've been going to Stahley's off and on for 15 + years, and you know what you're getting every time, which is why they get 5 stars from me. I've never been disappointed, it's exactly what it advertises to be and hasn't changed, that's where the real value is. Stahley's is not what I would consider a destination restaurant but rather a very solid standby that anyone would enjoy if you're just looking for something off the beaten path that offers good service and quality food at unbelievable prices. read more

First time here. This place was amazing from start to finish. Great atmosphere, large dining room for the family and large bar for the adult crowd. OK I get it- this place is an institution everybody goes there thinks the food is absolutely wonderful but I have to disagree. But before I say anything on the food I would comment that my waitress was very nice and very busy and very attentive. However the food was unremarkable and for being 53 years old this is the first time I didn't finish a cheesesteak. The steak must've been on the grill for days it was hard dried out and completely without taste. The frozen pierogies were simply deep-fried and doused in a pool of butter for some strange reason. And the hamburger was also dried out with the stale roll. This is a great place to go to and have a bite and a beer. Some great sandwich items are Stahley Burger with their sauce, Mexi Burger, and the Jerk Chicken Breast. Been here many times from when I was 4 until about a few days ago. Holy shit, never will I go back! I walked in and the sign said "wait to be seated" and the waitress was eating a sandwich right behind the bar, and never said a word for about 10 minutes until she said "you can grab any booth you want". I sat my ass down, then she waited until she finished eating to greet us, & took my food and drink order. I ordered a cheesteak WITH JUST CHEESE! It came out withh onions on it. I sent it back, then it came back WITHOUT CHEESE AND AGAIN, FUCKING ONIONS! Then they finally got it right, refused to comp it but this isnt even the worst part. I bit into it, and it proceeded to fuck me in the ass with a sandpaper condom. It tasted like they took chipped beaf and threw it in the deep fryer. The cheese sauce on it was Ice cold and the bread was basically a pocket pussy, the french fries were good and thats it!
