This is an independently owned and operated automotive service garage. I've had several experiences with them and they've helped me with necessary repairs. My experience is that they were trustworthy with good advice and told me exactly what I needed to keep my car running and roadworthy, without "running up" a big repair bill. Mr. Parsons actually advised me on not proceeding with an expensive repair once. His advice led me to scrapping a vehicle that was at end of life and to my purchasing another new car. Some mechanics might do otherwise in order to make a buck, but the long term goal here I feel is to build and keep the trust of customers. This place came highly recommended by a family member when I was in desperate need of an oil change. I was tired of that annoying little "maintenance" light blinking at me when I turned on my car and it was really close by. I finally called in and made an appointment for an oil change during the lunch hour. It was the easiest transaction ever! A gentleman running the counter instantly greeted me. After a brief explanation of the type of car I had and what I needed, he replied with "it'll be about 20 minutes." I took a quick walk around the block and after working up a sweat, I made my way back to the office. I don't think I was sitting down for more than three minutes when he came back in and said I was good to go. Fast and easy, can't complain about that! He also advised me that my front tires were about due for some replacements and that my breaks were about due as well. I knew this was true as someone told me this same thing about 1.5 years ago. I appreciated his honesty! He even gave me a rough estimate of the price and said that I could likely last until my next oil change. I was glad to hear that it wasn't anything urgent and the time frame he gave me was super helpful in terms of planning for the work. He also explained how long it would take for them to get the work done. To my surprise it wasn't as long as I thought. He said I would be in and outta there in a half a day. He also said if it was under special circumstances and they had enough notice, they could complete everything in an even shorter amount of time. I was super satisfied by my first experience here and I'll definitely be coming back to get the rest of my car worked on. My oil change was about forty buck and was so fast, the staff was overwhelmingly friendly and honest, and I left feeling like I was prepared for the soon to be needed upkeep on my car. Couldn't say enough good things about this place. Convenient, quick, affordable, great customer service. I dropped off at night and it was done by end of day the next day. Obviously this varies depending on what's wrong with your car, but they were on top of it and kept me in the loop the whole time. Appreciated their honesty and really felt like I could trust them. Update.. First I would like to apologise to Don, JAMES is the mechanic that helped (?) me, the one with the shitty attitude. The NEW battery is less than 1 month old. Today received warning number 2 that the voltage is declining. JAMES was asked to please check the alternator and the battery cables, before and after he took the car back. After the battery install, I inquired about both..his response was that they were okay. No mention of either or charge on the bill. Roadside assistance is needed to tow the car to a shop. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this shop. . read more

I started going to Star and Northwest after searching for an even better local alternative once many of my mechanics left where I was going before. I decided to follow one of them to Star & Northwest, where he hangs his hat now. After some due diligence and research it became abundantly clear that this was a reliable, honest establishment. I got to meet the nigh-infamous Don, the owner. Nice guy. Clearly had truckloads of experience under his belt. What intrigued me the most is that this place operates somewhat like an independent barbershop - the mechanics each have their own bays and portfolio of clients, and all walk-in business is shared. Mechanical acumen and know-how is also shared between all of them, which leads to a really cool wellspring of collected knowledge between all who work there. The prices for labor are extremely competitive, and the parts are reasonably priced. I highly recommend this establishment for the care AND upkeep of your vehicle. This is 100% the most honest and efficient auto shop in the area! I used to take my car to the dealer for it's oil change and what-not tune ups, but I grew tired of them telling me i needed to fix 100 things so I took my friend's advice and tried this shop! Best decision ever. Since then, I've used them for all of my oil changes (which typically take less than 20 minutes) CRAZZYYY compared to other people! They're also extremely friendly and honest. They will give you a timeline on items to think about which is helpful if you're maintaining your car on a budget. They also give the option of staying and waiting or dropping the car off. Another thing that might be helpful, I once got a flat tire later in the afternoon. I quickly called and they had my tire there by the next morning! I came in once they called me and they had it swapped out in no time. So glad I finally found a shop I can trust and depend on. :) read more

Took the mighty minivan in and asked that they replace the brakes and check to see if my suspension needed repairs, as the steering seemed off. (I has a broken spring , it turns out. Very dangerous and quickly repaired.) They called back to tell me, after I authorized a full brake replacement, that no work was needed on the brakes at all. Speedy service? Yes. But being told that a $300 repair they had been Ok'd to do was unnecessary? Brilliant. Honest and fair. I'll be taking cars here from now on, and so should you. read more

I've been coming here for years ever since Tilton's couldn't fix a simple rear trunk lid issue, and have always gotten effective, quick, and courteous service. I can't really speak to their prices, but they've always addressed the various issues with my car. They have also made recommendations that didn't benefit them in the short-term, like recommending I try the dealership for a seat buckle issue and declining payment on wonky starter issue. I don't think I'm ever going to be knowledgeable about cars, and I'm glad that these guys are around. read more

My tire was low and I noticed a screw in the tread. They got me right in. $25 bucks for a plug seemed a little high but I got right in and out. Went and got gas and noticed the exact screw was still in the tire. Went back and informed them of situation (obviously didn't inspect the entire surface). Again, got me right in and showed me both plugs. No apology and hit me with another $25 charge. So $50 to get a tire plugged. Did get in and out (after 2 visits) but can't help to feel that I was overcharged and the service wasn't thorough the first time. read more

Mr. Parsons and his team have the best auto shop in Columbus. I found Star & Northwest Auto care by recommendation of a friend, after receiving a $6,200 estimate from Firestone. I was told they were honest, hard working, and have the best value in the area. I dropped my car off at 10PM on a Monday night, and received a call by 8:30AM the next morning detailing the issues and cost with my car. They were able to fix it for $1,000. Yet again this shop did the right thing. Our engine coils kept failing in our Audi A4. Don was able to replace them and get us back on the road in a short amount of time. The next day our car was shuttering again. This time engine coil number 4 went out. Don replaced that coil and got us on our way only charging us for the part and not the labor since he just replaced coil number 3 the day before. Great staff and great service!! I had an unpleasant experience here. I brought my car in to fix some brake issues. They told me the car need to change a new set of brake pads and rotors and charged me 300$ for that. However, it didn't fix the braking issue. So I brought my car back to their place to check it. This time they say it's the brake caliper that caused the problem and that cost 420$. It seems like they didn't really care the cause of the issue at all. Just want me to change a lot of new stuff and charge me for that. read more

Recently had an issue with the car where the check engine light cane on and the engine was misfiring. After getting it diagnosed at a nearby Auto Zone, discovered that cylinder 1 was misfiring and so I changed the spark plugs and the ignition coil. About a week later the issue reappeared which meant that there's probably a bigger issue at hand than originally thought. I took the car here to this shop and they got to it right away. They checked it out but couldn't it to misfire and didn't see anything wrong...other than a couple loose spark plugs (I guess I didn't tighten them enough). They told me if it does come back that to bring it back right away and that I was free to go at no charge. I think that's some pretty good customer service, and I'll definitely bring the car back if the symptoms reappear. read more
