I've been a customer of Rick for nearly 10 years and never had issues in the past. Unfortunately, my recent experiences have been very disappointing. I brought three of my vehicles to his shop, and in two cases I spent a significant amount of money without getting proper results. On my Honda Pilot, the engine mounts were replaced, about a year later I was told it was the same issue again and that there was no warranty. I don't drive the vehicle excessively, so this raised a serious concern for me. The bigger issue was with my Ford Transit. I took it in three separate times for the same problems, a coolant leak, AC not working, and noticeable vibrations. Across those visits, I paid over $3,000, yet none of the issues were resolved. In the end, I had to take it to the dealership, where they properly diagnosed the problem, costing me an additional $2,500. It's disappointing to lose trust in a service I relied on for so many years. I hope they improve their quality and accountability moving forward. read more

This place is incredible! As an admittedly stereotypical Asian gal who has so much anxiety around cars and not the best driver, THIS is the place to go! My car is a 2010 Lexus Rx 350 that I had not taken in for car maintenance in 4 years (I know, I'm so bad), and the brakes have been making an awful noise for like 4 months now... Right when I arrived, I felt instantly relaxed immediately when I walked in the doors! The owner Destiny calmly and carefully walked me through everything, even though she was so busy, and I knew they didn't up charge me because I compared prices to all over where I live in west LA - and I truly did not trust anyone there on that side of town. I took my car in first thing around 7:40 AM, and they found a list of things (I thought it would be more!!) to work on: 1. Cooling system flush 2. Dirty brake fluid is dirty 3. Bad Front brake pads & rotors 4. Back brake pads & roaders 5. Bad cabin & air filters (engine) 6. Broken rear light 7. Car oil maintenance 8. "Bumper to bumper" full car inspection And they got it ALL done by 2:45 PM - I was shocked!! In summary, customer experience was phenomenal, pricing was fantastic, and the quality and value are off the charts! Took my car in for a coolant leak thought it was the thermostat so they changed the thermostat and did not notice it was still leaking coolant unless I paid a $160 dollars diagnostic fee. You would think that after the repair as a courtesy they would say your car is still leaking coolant but no unless they get there fee they will not check for any other issue. We'll $300 down the drain. I will never go back to this shop again they are the worst in customer service. But my fault for trusting them. I did not supply the part I supplied just the coolant. But don't go out of your way to check the thermostat if it's bad just replace it and don't check that it's still leaking coolant. Your kidding your a rip off just so you can charge $160 diagnostic fee like I said a waste of $300 and terrible customer service. read more

As you can see from my lack of bad reviews, I really hate leaving a bad review. But I feel compelled to leave a review in this situation. This is the worst I have ever been treated by any company. So, about four weeks ago I bought a 2006 Honda Element EX in Portland, Oregon and I drove it home to Southern California. The car only has 145,000 miles on it and it is in absolute pristine condition. The engine compartment is so clean, I would eat dinner off of it. But, the first day I drove it to work it stalled when I came to the first stop sign and pushed the clutch in to change gears. It does it on a regular basis now. It only stalls in about a two minute window after the choke mode shuts off and before the engine warms up. I took it down to Rick's Japanese Car Care and I talked to Rick. He told me that the car is in excellent condition and that I made a good purchase. I told him what was wrong with it. I asked him what he thought about doing a valve adjustment. He told me that he can tell if it needs a valve adjustment, without checking and he's the only one in the area who can do that. That was a little bit of a red flag for me and another red flag was, he was extremely fidgety, like he could not stand still in one position. To the point where it made me very uncomfortable. I should've listened to my intuition and left. But, they seem to have good reviews. I told him that I would drop the car off the next afternoon at 3:30 and that I'd have to wait for my girlfriend to pick me up. She gets off work at 5 o'clock. He said he would be there and give me a ride home, as I live fairly close. When I got there to drop my car off, Rick was nowhere to be seen. So, I had to Uber home. After the diagnosis, they called me and suggested that I replace the idle control valve and clean the injectors. Also, he said it needs a new belt and a motor mount. So I okayed that work. When I went to pick the car up, they charged me an additional $330 because the gasket was hard to get off the throttle body and that there was a lot of corrosion. I never authorized that, and if they called me and asked, I probably would've had the motor mount and/or belt done at a later date. So, they gave me no options. On the invoice it says they called me for authorization and even had a time that they called me. But, they never called me. So I went ahead and paid the bill. I got in the car and started it and the check engine light was on. Which tells me that they never took it for a test drive. They took the car back into the shop, did a smoke test and the throttle body gasket, that they replaced, was leaking. So, I had to leave it for another day. The morning after I picked it back up, on the way to work, the car stalled again three times. So, the work they did, did not solve the problem. I called them back to let them know and I told them I was unhappy about the $330 up charge that I didn't OK. Rick's wife said they would give me the $330 back. But to get that back, they had to refund the whole bill and recharge me minus the $330. Which means I had to wait four days for the refund to hit my account. I brought the car back for them to do further diagnostics, hoping that they would work with me on labor, since they misdiagnosed the problem in the first place. They called me and now suggested that I have a valve adjustment done. Oh surprise, surprise. That's what I suggested in the first place. I said OK. But I told Rick's wife that I've spent $900 trying to get the problem fixed, you guys missed diagnosed the problem and did not fix it. I asked her if they would do the valve adjustment and pay for the labor if I paid for the parts. She told me no. I asked her to meet me half way. She said no and proceeded to tell me that my pristine Honda Element was in poor condition, that it had been repainted and "prettied" up to sell. I let her know that before I purchased the car, I had it inspected by a Honda Element expert and he told me it's the cleanest Honda Element he's ever seen. It has zero rust on it. It has definitely not been repainted or "prettied" up to sell. Also, Rick told me that he was going to do the work on the car. His wife told me he did the work on the car. But when I talked to one of the technicians, he said that he and someone else worked on the car. Also, I asked them if they could put my car into the garage at night. One morning I drove by a half hour before they opened, on the way to work, no one was there and my car was sitting outside. To add to all this, I was never asked or given the chance to see or take the old parts. I can't even believe I've been treated so poorly. Nothing but lies and incompetence. I will not be taking my Honda Element or any car for that matter back to Rick's Japanese Car Care. Because really, there's not much caring going on there. read more

Had a very good experience with Rick's in the past servicing a 2009 Camry. Asked if they work on Lexus SUVs - answer "Yes!". Brought in my 2005 Lexus GX470 for a brake inspection and oil change. Their $39.00 brake inspection was performed. A few hours later I was advised that I needed $2,950 in front brake work and $740 in rear brake work for a grand total of $3690.00. A bit shocked, I asked why so much. "It's a Lexus" was the reply. Many parts for my old Lexus, especially brake parts, are Toyota. I was sincerely hoping Rick's would be my new "go to" repair shop for my two vehicles. $3690 is near half the value of this vehicle. I mentioned this and they suggested I apply for a loan to finance the repair. I told them I'd be taking it elsewhere for repair, which prompted the service rep to advise that I shouldn't drive anywhere - have it towed! She repeated this three times, as if to scare me. I had to sign a release to confirm I was "taking my life into my own hands" (her words). Drove home 14 miles just fine. Went to another shop. Full brake service on all four wheels, $765.00.
