Weekday lunch at Star Chaat Cuisine lands somewhere between reliable and forgettable -- which, depending on what you are looking for, is either a comfort or a missed opportunity. The room was half full, clean, and functional. Music at a reasonable volume, nothing that demanded your attention. The kind of setup you have seen in a hundred Indian restaurants along this corridor -- standard layout, standard lighting, standard everything. The restaurant knows what it is and makes no attempt to be anything else. That is not a criticism. It is just the truth. The greeting when we walked in was warm. The waitstaff at the door made a good first impression. The waiter who took our order was a different story -- new, visibly uncertain, the kind of uncertain that makes you wonder whether your order was heard correctly. No confidence on the menu, no engagement on the spice request. When we asked for spicy, he nodded and moved on. The kitchen did the same. We ordered à la carte -- rajma, chole, dal, bhindi. All four arrived hot and fresh, portions generous, nothing to fault on quantity. But every dish pulled its punches. The rajma had body without depth. The chole looked the part and stopped there. The dal was smooth and inoffensive. The bhindi was cooked through but flat. Spicy on the menu and spicy on the plate were two entirely different conversations that never met. This is a kitchen that can cook. The fundamentals are there -- fresh ingredients, proper temperature, decent volume. What is missing is conviction. The spice levels suggest a kitchen calibrated for the least adventurous person in the room rather than the person who actually asked for heat. Where This Could Improve The spice request needs to mean something. If a customer asks for spicy, the kitchen should deliver it -- not a diplomatic approximation of it. The waiter training gap is visible and fixable; someone needs to own that table from greeting to check-back. One more confident hand in the kitchen on the seasoning side would move this from a 3 to a solid 4 without changing anything else on the menu. read more

This is a no frills kind of place. This is my first visit and I'm a fan of chaat, but I've since learned that I like my chaat a bit spicy and that's not really the flavor profile served here. We tried quite a few dishes: - avocado Jalmuri (3.5/5): didn't really feel like the avocado pieces added much to this - chole battura (4.5/5): served hot and the puri and chile tasted pretty good, not very spicy - spicy misal pav (5/5): one of my fav dishes that we tried that night. The misal was very tasty and we ordered extra bread for the curry - rajma (4/5): I enjoyed the rajma but found that my family just found it mediocre. - stuffed gobi paratha (6/5): very very good, and some of the best I've had in a long time. Came with pickle and curd Service was a bit slow and felt all over the place. The inside isn't too spacious and can feel a bit cramped for larger parties but there were a lot of people there for a Thursday night! I would return for the paratha and misal pav! read more

Our April visit, we tried Rajasthani Mirchi Vada April monthly special was extraordinary. Mostly they fill the pepper with potato masala and batter it, thats ut, but this one before battering it they added more masala around pepper and then it was battered and fried, it tasted awesome . Along withat we had the punjabi style saag and panner naan. Of course they were good too. Rajasthani Mirchi Vada was very filling we struggled to finish the naan and saag. Visited Star Chaat Cuisine for a weekday dinner. We started with pani puri and veg Manchurian--the pani puri was refreshing and delicious, while the Manchurian was a bit dry and underwhelming. For mains, we had paneer tikka masala with garlic naan and tandoori roti. The paneer tikka masala was rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced. It paired really well with the tandoori roti. The garlic naan was soft and flavorful but a bit too buttery for my taste. Special mention to our server Garry for being friendly and attentive. Went with my Indian friend as I have no idea what to order there. They serve vegetarian snacks and meals. The snacks are light (relatively) and we needed up eating quite a few dishes there. I don't tend to go for Indian cuisine most of the time, but I wanted to change things up, and Star Chaat had great reviews. I was a little disappointed by the service. The staff weren't particularly interested in explaining things and seemed to take their time in coming by our table. We probably weren't the usual clientele, so maybe that was part of it, I don't know. The food was solid. Some of it was stuff I wasn't familiar with, but was pretty tasty. There were a couple things I'd definitely order again, but overall, I'm not sure I'd want to dine in at the restaurant again. I might just place a togo order next time. read more

Time for an updated review! This is the place we frequent the most when craving North Indian style chaats, over the past year or so this has become our favorite over chaat bhavan. Menu and monthly specials are kind of similar to chaat bhavan but the restaurant managed to maintain consistency in the quality of their offerings. Given their large menu, one will definitely hit some weak dishes once in a while but for the most part the dishes are pretty good. Gary was out of the world. You enter and you can smell the authentic curry aroma of Indian food. We ordered the thali a were si happy. I also will give some credit for our server who literally looked quite busy but maintained a smile and good attitude. The reason i am taking off a star is the following... a. A few friends met up here for lunch. Let me start with decor, it's jarring with the rust color that they have everywhere. The light fittings were beautiful. The service was great. I've driven by this spot so many times and was excited to finally be able to try it. The space itself looks renovated but still a bit dated. Regardless we came in craving chaat and my friend and I got to try both the Dahi dev puri and the ragda Patties. Both were delicious- only note is the dahi sev puro plate could have been cleaned up before serving to us. We also tried the saag chole with onion kulcha and both tasted great. One of the best items to order to try a variety of flavors was the Bhel-Sev Thali, which started out with a chaat of bhel (puffed rice) mixed with a tangy, herbaceous mint chutney, sprouted moong beans, chickpeas, pomegranate seeds, shredded beets, and cilantro, all topped with sev (chickpea flour noodles)--a festival of crunch! Then there was the House Thali itself, a round metal platter with aloo gobi matar (potatoes, cauliflowers, peas cooked in spices), paneer makhani (paneer cubes in a creamy tomato-onion gravy), dal, kadhi (yogurt soup), raita, kheer, gulab jamun, two rotis, rice, papad, and chaas (spiced buttermilk) to drink. My favorite parts were the soft rotis and the paneer makhani, but in general, the combination of hot, cold, spicy, savory, sweet, and tangy components made for a balanced meal. The restaurant also had a menu of October specials, and we tried the unique Sundried Tomato Kofta with Chili Thyme Naan. The kofta were veggie balls (made with tomatoes, potatoes, and herbs) served in a spiced tomato curry, along with soft and crispy naan flatbread flavored with chili and thyme. The service was SUPER QUICK and we went during dinner time. We did not need a reservation and were able to get a table quickly. I would definitely recommend their weekly special menu - they have some interesting recipes to try on that menu. Also their chaats were really good! I was slightly disappointment by the daal makhni because it was Maa Ki Daal instead of Daal makhni and lacked the creamy texture. Would give this place a try once again! read more

My personal experience dining at this establishment was disappointing to say the least. As we first walked in, it took a minute for an employee to even notice us and me along with my boyfriend stuck out like sore thumbs. They first asked if it was fine that they served all vegetarian food to which we responded yes that is fine and they were hesitant to seat us given our response. Then after we were seated, it took a good minute to be served water and to take our orders. The waitress did not put our order and drinks in correctly, on top of other guests who came in much later being tended and received their food before us. This was my favorite Indian restaurant of them all for 3.5 meals. On visit #4, it sank out of sight! What I liked best: the monthly special menu and food items!!! I'd seen this when I was shopping online for a new Indian restaurant, but apparently they didn't have the November special menu ready for our first meal--a dinner--and I totally forgot about it because I usually order saag paneer as my first meal at any new Indian restaurant anyway. And their saag paneer was totally to die for! So, Meal #1 was totally fab even without the special menu! Meals #2 and 3 were both lunches, which we ordered off the November special menu, which was ready by then. I was totally smitten with this place after those two meals! The special items were so unusual, they were so fabulous tasting, the menu included a special chai (another to-die-for item), etc. I thought their desserts were not as fabulous as everything else, but I was still totally into this place! And then meal #4. It was December by this point, but they still had their November special menu out. Major disappointment because I'd already tried everything on the November special menu that I wanted to try during Meals #2 and #3. And then the service was beyond laughable! I tried doing seated half-jacks to get some waiter's attention at one point. There was a young guy standing near the cash register, facing the dining area, who saw me, and continued scrolling through his phone! A woman at a nearby table commiserated when she saw me as she'd been totally unable to get their attention either. So! This place has a brilliant chef and a lousy manager, as far as I can tell! Im happy they opened a location in the South Bay. its in the middle of Gandhi nagar (central to all Indians, every city in India has a Gandhi nagar) and poses a good competitor to Chaat Bhavan. The food, service and ambience are good. The wait staff are very energetic and helpful. They opened this new location recently and so the crowds are not large but its has a great ambience. if you need chaat or North Indian food this can be your goto place. Also the prices seem reasonable. 4 of us ate one dish each for a total of $52. So please go and enjoy and review. Almost all the dishes there are very good.
