The Big Y has been around for a long time, but it still feels fresh and interesting. Both their dry goods and their produce is wide-ranging and we find what we need to stock up for a week of meals and snacks. I particularly like that they have plain (unflavored) Kodiak oatmeal which for some reason not all stores carry. They have become a little pricy, but so far I am willing to pay given the reliable quality of the wares. read more

It's a very nice, clean store, with a wide variety of packaged, fresh, and prepared foods. The seafood counter is impressive, with a few types of fresh oysters, and other seafood. They carry tomahawk steaks; that could feed 4-5 people. The meat looked fresh and well trimmed. Plenty of domestic and imported cheeses. read more

Very good and clean grocery store. Good variety of everything, from vegetables to meats. They have also decent sushi available (which are discounted on Wednesdays!) and pizza. Everything is fresh. I have a nickname for Big Y. I call it the Big Ripoff. Let me share just one example. On Ash Wednesday of this week - I stopped in for shrimp cocktail. I got there very late and the fish department was closed....all the fish had been packaged and put away. Normally I ask Leslie or Mark for a few shrimp .. (Big Y Naked Shrimp brand) - and the price per pound is usually around $8.99 ...give or take. I spotted a prepackaged container of the same brand shrimp which had 12 shrimp in it - 6 ounces for $8.79 Later that night at home, I was shocked to see that the shrimp in the container were priced at $23.44 a pound. Those shrimp if handed to me by an employee would have cost $3.37. But because it was prepackaged in a black circular container - it ended up costing me $5. 42 more. In other words, I paid $5.42 for a plastic container and some cocktail sauce. i called the day manager Chris to discuss who referred me to Bob the night manager. Bob told me, "that is the way we unit price it. Next time you might be better off buying a bag of frozen shrimp for $8.99 and just running cold water over it." Lovely. You want a second example. Triscuits at Big Y are approximately $4 a box. The same item at Walmart are about $2.25. The examples are many. Big Y is overly pricey on many items. Let the buyer beware. I will be going more often to Stop and Shop in Branford and only Big Y when I need to. read more

This grocery store is the worst thing to even happen to the town of guilford. Big y corporate has blocked several businesses over the years from coming to town and the plaza it is in such as Costco, job lot, and they are the reason Walmart left the plaza bc they complained Walmart wanted to sell food in their store. They also pushed several small businesses out during their expansion years ago. They are nothing but an over priced store that has no respect for the town or the wants and needs of its residents. read more

Tight aisles, high prices, not enough checkout registers open, not the cleanest store, marginal produce. Just a disappointing place that is convenient to my home (being a Guilford resident) I shop elsewhere that is a hassle to get to by comparison, to this particular Big Y but the prices, produce, are worthy of the out of the way hassle. read more

This review is not about the Guilford, CT store. The Guilford store is great.This is a review about corporate response to a complaint I made to corporate regarding a senior discount that was offered on dairy products. The 25% senior discount last week was for dairy products. I purchased 3 different cheeses (blue, Manchego and St Andre). When I checked the receipt there was no discount. Big Y classified them as "Deli". I did not get them at the deli. These cheeses come from cows, goats and sheep. What can be more dairy than that. When I complained to corporate this was their response: " Hi, thank you for reaching out. Our International Cheese Dept is part of our Deli department. We do have many prepackaged cheeses available in our dairy cases as well. We apologize for this confusion and going forward we will be sure to be clearer that purchases made in that deli section are not included in Dairy. Thank you." I responded: So cheese is dairy in one part of your store but not in another. Your definition is exclusionary. Your response is not what I would expect from Big Y. I would have expected authorization to return the cheese of authorization for the 25% discount. Customer satisfaction is important in a retail relationship. Misleading advertising is unconscionable. So for $4.50 they choose to lose a customer? read more

big y has deceptive advertising!!! They advertise family fish dinner. You show up and want to order one. They say no there is no such sale. You show them their sale flyer and the item. They say well that's not haddack or cod but I can give you polluck or tilapia. I don't want polluck or tilapia, they say well have a nice day good bye!!! Basically Big Y does a lot of deceptive advertising. You show up and they deny having such a sale or they ran out or some other excuse for not having the advertised merchandise. Also they do lots of substitutions with less expensive ingredients. Been shopping there more than ten years but sick and tired of their BS. Only reason I go there is they are close to my house. Went to the bakery at Big Y today & stood there being ignored while several employees joked & enjoyed hanging out, behind the counter, NOT asking myself or the other potential customers if we needed any help. You can't get the items in the case yourself so it would he nice if they at least acknowledge the customers standing there even if it turns put they were just browsing. I would've bought a few things if they had asked me if I needed help or even just looked at me. So thanks for saving me the money & calories w/your bad service. read more

Amazing customer service. Great atmosphere. Good place to be all together. I would recommend the hot bar and the pizza. The party pizza is to die for, especially the pieces without the crust. Prices are affordable for the most part, but always reasonable. Wide range of products and a terrific card selection. Much better than the other Big Ys I've been to. Stop by any time it is open to pick up a pizza, some sodas, and some wings and enjoy your time in their world class eating area. read more

I am a person who likes honesty, and I trust people too much. I will like give my opinion about this market because I bought a lot there, unfortunately I do recognize the prices are a little high, but on the other hand people working there are nice, no all of them....Today I bought a piece of meat because I have plan to cook for my friends, unfortunately the meat they gave to me was full of funk,and full of fat a lot. Nothing make me so disappointed when people try to take avance about me, the person who took my order told me "come in few minutes" what I did, and never check anything I bought until I am in my house. It is not the first time this happened to me, few months ago was with a piece of turkey what I have to put on the garbage. Hoping this no happen anymore. read more
