Thank the heavens for Ayuthai!!! We moved recently from West Haven to the Middletown area... and let's just say it's taken us since August to find Thai (and many other things) worth ordering twice! And this is it!!! Also if you know me... my greatest compliment is to forget to take pics of on first visit!!! Sorry... the combo of hunger and deliciousness was too much! So... I'll take pics during any of our many visits to come. This place hits all the requirements!!! Delish, timely, friendly, fresh, AUTHENTIC (which mid-state places seem to not understand!!!) and reasonably priced. We met my friend for dinner at this thai restaurant he recommended. Says the owner is his friend. Food was delicious, he went to the kitchen and cooked it for us. He even gave me some pad thai to try, that was also delicious. Restaurant is bigger than it looks. Ayuthai as a place used to be one of the good Thai places. Now don't get me wrong the food at their new location is still tasty and well made but some of their magic is gone. The environment is taken over from maritime grill which a lot of the signage, menus, and decorations are still up. The question being are they Thai or American cuisine? Additionally they didn't include some of the expected items like a side of rice, salad or soup with our meal which was said in menu was included with our drunken noodles and pad Thai. On entry we stood awkwardly in entrance before being greeted and took us a while to do our basics for ordering. Overall not the same for me as it was. Ps they now offer tours to Thailand, are they making pad Thai or a travel agency? Seems like a little to many focuses read more

Mixed feelings. I've been to Ayuthai few years ago before they moved to a new location and merged with Maritime Grill. This is where mixed feelings begin. Well before the merge it was obviously Thai cuisine, very good, very friendly and accommodating staff. After merge it is Thai and American cuisine, as well as grill and also (get ready) a travel agency! The inside and outside kept the looks of Maritime grill. As we came in we had to wait a while to be seated since nobody was greeting us. You are given two menus - Ayuthai and Maritime grill. I got myself lunch Pad Thai which was tasty. In the menu it says the dish comes with rice or soup, or salad but nobody asked me what I want to choose with my entree hence nobody brought the additions that come with it. I think Ayuthai serves great Thai food but it has lost its identity. read more

I've never been to the old location so can't compare. Driving here on the back roads from N. Branford was so beautiful; the Fall colors were spectacular. I ordered Green Curry with pork. Comes with jasmine rice. There's a lot of pork with red & green peppers, zucchini, eggplant. Pork was a bit over cooked; but still tasty. The heat was mild but I didn't ask for spicy so I enjoyed it. The restaurant is large with tables & seating at the Bar. I'm glad I finally got here. Definitely coming again read more

Decent authentic Thai place. They weren't open for dining in when I was there but they had delivery and pick up. I chose the pick up option. Seamless was easy and quick. Small Parking lot but it wasn't busy when I was there. The inside was sectioned off and the pick was easy and fast. The food was good. I went with the Pad Thai and the Fried Rice. Both were good but the Pad Thai was better. The restaurant and the food had an very good authentic feel and taste. I will be back when I am in the area again. read more

Pretty bland tasting and our takeout order was wrong! I ordered 3 dishes, 2 chicken, 1 veg, through YELP, so no room for human error on the phone. Sure enough our receipt indicated the correct order, but all 3 dishes had chicken. I really wouldn't go back anyway though. Didn't enjoy the bland noodles. We just went here tonight after not coming in a while! The food, atmosphere, service, everything was incredible... I'm very pleased because last time we were here, they were "merged" with Maritime Grille. It was odd and wasn't the same. That is no longer! They're only Ayuthai, from now on. I'm so incredibly glad to see they got their "magic" back. Also, they fully renovated the inside and made it feel more authentic to their cuisine... very cute and cozy. So, we've been going for years and decided to go to the new location,which I don't think is an improvement at all. It really feels like you are eating in a straight-up bar, not a restaurant, a family even left before ordering. The peach color wainscoting and general decor needs to be changed. They should hire a professional decorator. We were also the youngest patrons and we are in our 40's. We are vegetarians and found the options okay, not that interesting/creative compared to other Thai restaurants in CT. We got the po pia sod and vegetable spring rolls. Both were good, not great, and portion size was small-medium, so we were glad to get two appetizers. Then, we got the pad Thai and the broccoli and tofu dish. The pad Thai was good, but the broccoli tofu dish's sauce was great! I think it was a garlic sauce and we loved it. I think Bangkok Blvd in Hamden is way better though. I will only probably go back if they add more interesting vegetarian dishes and improve the ambiance. read more

This was our favorite restaurant in the area when we lived on the CT coast 7 years ago - and after just revisiting it, I'm very happy to report it's still completely excellent. We remembered our old favorites, Massaman Curry and Pad Ped Chicken - and both were fantastic. We asked for it extra spicy and they brought it with real heat, which was appreciated. The massman is cooked perfectly with plenty of meat, potatoes and, uniquely and deliciously, carrots. The carrots are softened enough that they go great with the flavor of the dish. The Pad Ped has great vegetables in it, and the flavor of the dish is dead on. Service was fast and pleasant for lunch. Highly recommend! read more

The first time I came to the restaurant I had a pretty good experience. Minimal wait time. I ordered summer rolls and instead got the rolls that were fried, I think spring rolls. No big deal, they were good. I really like the curry and my daughter had Drunken Noodles, which she said were good. Second visit was for lunch. It was like night and day experience. Ordered Summer rolls, got the right rolls, but it took a long time to get. Definitely more than 15 minutes wait for them. When we got them, they were cut into pieces like sushi roll. Now for anyone who has not had Summer rolls, they fall apart after the first bite. I always make a mess. Trying to eat them when they were in smaller pieces was quite the challenge. After a even longer wait, my husband's meal came out and mine was about five minutes later. The Pad Thai was such a disappointment with no peanuts, barely any veggies, plenty of tofu, which I like, and too much of the sauce in it. I took a few bites and decided to take it home to add what was missing in it. In the end, it went to the garbage. I don't know if the person who was cooking the lunch menu had a clue on Thai food cooking. There are a few good places in Branford, and will be going there instead. The place could use some updating. New ownership? I would give the restaurant a C- for food and service. The new location is hard to pick out on the highway, there are two conflicting signs out from t, and customers aggressively compete for parking space in the small lot in front for an admittedly very lively take-out business. The new steakhouse-Thai combination isn't an ideal formula--at least in this location. The curry puffs were dry and tasteless, the chicken satay dry, and the Thai Steak confused--somewhere between a soup and a salad--and gloppy. And finally, the prices are not commensurate with the quality of the food. read more

IMPORTANT: ADDRESS ON THIS LISTING IS WRONG - They are now sharing a restaurant building with Mariners Grill(?) - Only about 1/2 a mile from their old location. Call the business directly to confirm address with them. 1. This is more like "Chinese-Chef Infused Thai Food" - The food is OK, but this is not your traditional Thai, and much more like chinese-infused thai food. Nothing wrong with that if you like chinese, but we don't - we love thai. 2. The Food: Skip the traditional Thai steamed dumplings and buy the frozen ones at Trade Joes (better than these), and the pineapple vegetable fried rice did not taste right/not sure if it was the freshness of the vegetables or what they cooked it in. 3. Shared Restaurant - While this makes good financial sense, they are sharing the restaurant with an american/italian type setting with a very large bar at the center which is OK for adults, but not sure if it is the best for children. Hope their chef returns to traditional thai style cooking, and when he or she does, we will return. read more

Recently ordered takeout from here of shrimp pad Thai and crab Rangoon's. Their pad Thai was flavorful and a nice portion size for take out. The crab Rangoon's were unfortunately burned on the top but minus that the flavor was good. I would definitely order from here again and try other menu items. read more

I can not say enough about my experience at Ayuthini. I called to place a LARGE Order for my Mom's 60th BDay for pickup The owner personally handled my order and was super accommodating with the pickup time and hooked us up and made sure it was a special occasion. We had a Feast like it was Thanksgiving. Left overs for all. And Everyone was happy to take the leftovers because the food all tasted amazing. I actually just finished eating again I would be lying if I said I remembered the entire order but I have a picture of the feast. We had appetizers, rice dishes, noodle dishes, Thai Iced Tea and Much More and ALL OF IT WAS a 10/10. Highly Recommend to the Upmost Level. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing meal after not eating here for a while. It is unusual to have such uniformly bland and unappealing food but our four dishes were not worth saving as leftovers except for the dry and tasteless chicken satay which we saved for our dog. The Fish Chu Chee was breaded and in a thick coconut sauce, the broccoli in the dish was better than the fish which had one very fishy piece - we worried about eating it - maybe they mixed tilapia and catfish in the same dish but doubtful. The Pad Ped string beans were in a gloppy sauce without much flavor too- made worse by the elderly beans. The Basil Shrimp also shared the gloppy sauce without flavor- the shrimp was not over cooked but did not have the flavor of the dish. We requested medium hotness for all dishes but found them without any appreciable heat. This was an expensive disappointment we will not repeat in the foreseeable future. read more

Thai is my favorite type of food, and I will eat and enjoy generally any Thai. But this is terrible Thai. Idk what happened, but it was decent before, and now it is awful. Maybe it was the move? Unsure of what to expect as we are from out of town and it's always hard to gauge what an unfamiliar place in an unfamiliar state is going to be like. Ayuthai far exceeded any expectations that my 16 year old daughter and I may have had at all. I would have easily given 5 stars if only the decor had been a bit more " exciting " and less " A Christmas Story" restaurant dull. Exceptional Thai food deserves to be showcased in a fairly modern and decently lit room. The menu itself was familiar yet interesting. No photos. Foods grouped under their protein sub type or rice/noodle and the last page dedicated to Chef Specialties. I once wrote in a review how the specials were listed first and how smart that was... allowing the diner to contemplate these extraordinary dishes while considering the mundane. These speared last, more like an afterthought. All seemed delicious, especially the honey bbq ribs that I showed to one server and she replied that those take a long time to prepare.. too bad, I was set on them. I like to order the whole fish and without Lee or a refrigerator to store leftovers I knew I would be on my own. This fish was really spectacular... the sauce a red curry fixed to my liking of very spicy and adorned with fresh peppers, onions and some greens. Fantastic !!! Crispy, fresh veggies, delicious spicy sauce and a great fish. Loved it. Price was right at 28 dollars. Mele loved her Drunken Noodles w vegetables. One bite and she looked up at me and said " OMG... this is better than Tum Thai", our local favorite. Service was a bit on the slow side, though when anyone came by they were friendly and enthusiastic. I was interested in the large bottle of San Pelligrino listed in the menu but informed that they were out of it. There was a large table of regulars behind us who were a bit perplexed by the slow service as well. I asked for the check before anyone offered dessert or tea... who knows, maybe something was up. All in all, an excellent meal and if we lived closer, it would be a favorite, though I would always wish for a redecoration of some sort. read more

Went for dinner yesterday. No one there on a Friday night. We were regulars at the old location, which was usually busy and very enjoyable during jazz night. Ordered a curry which was watery and a bit bland, and a wide noodle dish which was overcooked and overpowered by fish sauce. Leftovers were inedible. It was not inexpensive. Very, very unfortunate as the owner is very nice and we want to see him succeed. I don't think this location / incarnation will make that happen. read more

We went to there new location and was completely disappointed. The hostess is extremely rude, no wine list, our waitress overcharged us and we were given a surcharge because we used a debit card. Food: We ordered the Tom Yum Soup for two and Drunken Noodles with Chicken. The Tom Yum was average size and had much more of a tomato broth flavor than the traditional galangal, fish sauce, and lime flavors that are iconic in Tom Yum soup. The only plus was that there was a fair amount of shrimp in it. The Drunken Noodles were among the oiliest I have ever had; it was like one of those "do you want some noodles with that oil?" moments. Experience: We went on a Sunday night around 7:30 pm and it was decently busy in the main dining room; however, it seemed like most tables were actually finishing up their meals and just enjoying the complimentary jazz entertainment. We were told to sit anywhere, which was fine, and then were brought menus. The problems began when we basically didn't have a server assigned to our table and I had to flag someone down to put in an order. The Tom Yum Soup came out about 15 min later and it was a solid 35 min wait before I had to flag down the manager to tell him we have been waiting almost 40 min for our entree. He comes back shortly to tell me they are firing it and it came out about 8-10 min later. I'm thinking it was probably drenched in oil because the kitchen was rushing to make it for us. My version of decent service is being assigned a waiter, having the waiter check in a few times throughout the meal (which never happened...probably because no one knew who was responsible for our table), and ensure that we are getting our food in a timely manner. I don't think these are unreasonable standards; if you are running a sit down restaurant and can't provide these basic services, you probably need to reconsider your profession. Value: The soup was $9.99 and oily noodles were $13.99, both of which I thought were fairly priced. read more

Was up from South Florida the past week-I found this gem of a restaurant in Guilford, Ct.-Absolutely the best restaurant I found in a long time amazing Thai cuisine and staff super nice and accommodating! The curry puffs with sweet potatoes, chicken and scallions were the best I've ever eaten along with the chicken with broccoli, shrimp or scallops with broccoli just sensational! Oh, no no--Ayuthai, were you injured in the move? I'm not sure why you chose to pair up with Maritime Grill, but it is not successful. Your food has always been on the high side of acceptable cost for Thai, but since it was good I didn't mind. Tonight's meal was...not good. The dumplings were really obviously not fresh, my entree was soupy (it wasn't soup), and the rice was mushy and overcooked. MOST confusing, however, were the holdout Maritime waitstaff, hobbling around in their orthopedic shoes, clearly befuddled about the entire (non-Maritime) menu. I've been going here for years and can't believe I haven't left a review already. Often I get take out but occasionally dine in The food is always fresh, very flavorful and quite delicious. Being a basil fanatic, I always ask for extra and they also accommodate me. I mostly go for the curry dishes but recently tried the beef and eggplant from the chef's specialty section. It was was delicious, clearly I need to branch out from the curry section. The staff is always friendly and attentive. They have live music most Sunday evenings and I think reservations are suggested. Tip: I also love the spicy heat. After asking for "really spicy" a few times, Cy the owner suggested I ask for "Thai spicy." That did the trick. They are very accommodating on spice levels. read more

Revising my review- they gave us all a free entree and showed empathy. I would recommend in the future offering a refund option if the wait was known to be longer. Normally I'm pleased with Ayuthai - the food has always been good and no issues dining in or take out. I don't know what happened this time around but I'm waiting with 5 additional parties for our takeout orders. If it's going to take an hour, please just estimate accurately. We were told 25 minutes and I'm passing the 45 minute mark. Based on us and the several complaints I've observed from guests in the dining room, I'm assuming they are short staffed or something unexpected happened. My husband and I, for several years ate out at both Ayuthai AND the Maritime Grille. At the Maritime Grille, we put up with the rudeness of one crabby waitress and the owners wife until they crossed the line when we had a family Christmas gathering there. They ruined it. We loved going to Sai's place. Had birthday parties there etc... Great Thai food. There, once a week. We stopped going due to Covid and other issues. Walked into the "new" place a couple of months ago. Relieve to see Sai there. Very shocked that he passed us 2 menus. One for Thai food and one for the Maritime Grille. My heart sank, when he told me that Pete still cooks there and that his wife helps out. My advice, Sai. Out with the old (and crotchety) and in with the new, otherwise you won't make it. read more

Update- Ayuthai has moved. I had lunch there recently. They still have a lunch special menu, and the food is as good as it ever was. There's plenty of parking, too. They took over an existing restaurant, which gave them more seating and more room. Recommended. read more

If you want to place an order for pickup, be prepared for an extremely long wait. The restaurant had zero people in it and they were just on their phones. My food was expected to be ready and I stood there for 15 extra minutes. When I politely asked for an update, the owner was extremely rude and told me I didn't have to wait and that it would be 10 more minutes. read more

One of my favorite Asian restaurants in the area. Food always tastes fresh and delicious. These crisp appetizers hit the spot. The live music is always a fun aspect to the atmosphere of eating in. Need a palate cleanser...try their amazing coconut ice cream. I love that they deliver, though time for take out and delivery are both usually a bit of a wait. read more
