I stopped in for groceries around 5pm on 10/13. I had at least 15 lbs of food, primarily heavy liquids and I was told that I could only have 1 bag. I could purchase a reusable bag if I needed another one because the store was low on paper bags. I asked to speak with a manager because I needed to carry all of my groceries 5 blocks and one bag would absolutely break. The manager gave me a really hard time and it took several minutes for me to convince her to give me a second bag. This is absolutely ridiculous. There are about a dozen Star Market stores within a 20-30 minute drive; there is no reason why someone couldn't get some more bags! If a grocery store runs out of bags, it indicates that people aren't doing their jobs. I doubt I'll ever shop here again. read more

I love this place, it's like a trip back in time and a look at what used to pass for a super market. Lighten up, folks...it's been this size for like 40 years. It's not like they can make it bigger in the heart of Brookline. If you people weren't so spoiled, you'd realize how lucky you are to have a supermarket in this neighborhood at all. read more

Horrible. Just horrible. They clearly hire 16 year old kids to save on wages. Unfortunately it took me 30 min to get through check out with 2 people in front of me. The young kid behind the check out had zero interest in processing people. His manager who came by to chat mid transaction also had no interest in processing angry people. Never again. I had business in the neighborhood and saw this tiny Star Market, went in for couple of quick items. I was very impressed as small as it was how tidy the store was. I figured that I probably needed to make a trip to a larger store as I needed to get gallons of spring water, I was wrong. After I got the 10 gallons from the shelves there was still plenty left. Parking lot had a very easy access from main road. There was a plenty of space too. The best part of shopping here was that there was no homeless or drunk hanging on the outside. read more

I don't go to Star Market very often, but when I do they generally have everything I need. I wish they had a bigger organic selection. Overall it's a pretty typical grocery store. For those who drive, the parking lot is a plus. read more

Since the Shaw''s, Boylston St, Chestnut Hill, closed, I was in need of an alternative grocery store. THIS Shaw's certainly is NOT THAT. The aisles are so narrow, just one cart each way barely fits. Elves should shop here. The store is so narrow and they only have a few registers and that is crazy to me. Yeah the store is clean, great. But it shouldn't take me 50% longer to go through the small store but it does. The aisles are so small that you have to literally leave your cart at the end of the aisle, otherwise you can't get by if someone is already in the aisle. And, this is Brookline, these people diagonally park their lexus svus in the parking lot and leave their carts the same way. I don't think I'd frequent this place. read more

Was there around 9 am. The customer service personnel is the most racist, grouchiest person. There was a mistake in the transaction and our presence there bothered her. She fought everything we said. She needs to be retrained or at least not be working at customer service. In a diverse area like this location, you really can't afford to be racist and rude. read more

i hate this grocery store. i won't call it a supermarket because that's giving undue credit. there are several male staff members here that leer and ask me every damn time if i need any help. no thank you, i can bag up my own broccoli, THANKS. it's the closest stop on my way home from work but i always regret not going 5 minutes out of the way to hit whole foods. the entire place is kept at about 55 degrees so i run the gauntlet between elderly women parking their carts across the aisle while clutching my shivering body and trying to ignore being mentally undressed by the stock boys. read more

They need to make the most of what little space they have so lots of things hanging above eye-level that have seemingly little or nothing to do with the rest of what is in the aisle. But that is not why I'm giving this place 2 stars. I'm giving this place 2 stars because today I went to buy LESS THAN A WEEK'S worth of groceries, ten items total, and it cost me almost THIRTY DOLLARS. And almost everything I bought was marked down so I can't imagine what paying full price there is like. One of a few too many in the area, the Beacon Street Star Market is a dinosaur; a tired, yesteryear-entrenched compact supermarket chain struggling to stay relevant in a changing world much less Boston, to which the chain has had a tight grip on for decades. Star Market serves the fairweather grocer crowd much like Stop & Shop and a general market share that hasn't jumped on board with Whole Foods vision of the world. Reasons people stick with it may be ease of parking, proximity to their stop or drive-in or dorm, distance from city traffic and can't imagine much else. Upon walking in, the store is dimly-lit and somewhat bunkered in its array of oppressively towering and often odd-shaped aisle arrangements. Unlike neighboring Trader Joe's a mile or so down the street and a leading example of how grocery shopping can be a fun and a necessity-driven experience, Star Market mimics a compulsory need to eat rather than to experience shopping and with it, new things within. With prices often higher on often comparable and or what's deemed "fresh" at Star can be had upon an always invigorating TJs run, even if frozen. Time after time the prepared meats area near the back corner look uninviting. Flies permeate the bake racks which look as if they are a day old daily. Produce typically looks above average for a city chain market but should be considered a second stop to somewhere else. You'll come in if you need a something brand these stores tend to have almost exclusively and maybe get it on weekly special. Workers here tend to carry a mirrored unhappy vibe whereby workers at TJs seem 24/7 hyped up. As with Shaw's, Star Market exists only under the authority held and its stronghold on Boston's suburbs for ages. If the ugly Stop & Shop on Harvard Street makes you sad enough to come here, you may need some intensive shopper's therapy elsewhere. Try the vibrant Copley Star (bit of a hike for Brookliners) or better yet, have I mentioned Trader Joe's yet? read more

Since this is the closest grocery store to our place, we generally pick up things from here. I don't always find the freshest produce here but it does cover our staples. I usually can find what I am looking for but I do also shop at Trader Joe's and Roche. It is always crowded though and people do not know how to navigate the aisles! We try to get in and out as quickly as possible since a lot of older people just stop in the middle of a row or a bunch of college kids huddle in a group. read more

The rudest "cashier" I've experienced in a long time! As I read previous comments, I now understand. The woman (older, black hair)is racist! I visited this store on my way to work totally out of necessity. I had another incident with this same cashier a few months ago and decided that I'm not going to spend my money in a store that has this woman as it's "face". As the cashier in this store.. she represents Star Market when she's behind that register! So I stop there on my way to work this morning...to pick up something for an office party. I grab my items and get in line. I observe this woman being as friendly as can be with customers ahead of me.. She gets to me...says nothing... proceeds to pretty much throw my items to the bagging area as she "rings them up".. then she decides to slap my receipt on the counter rather than in my hand as she did for the previous customers. I'm done. I will never visit this store again and will definitely discourage anyone and EVERYONE I know in the area from going there... read more

They have a great butcher with excellent cuts of meat, a decent seafood section, and a bread slicer they'll use if you ask them to slice the Iggy's bread in the bakery department. It doesn't have everything I need, but those three bonuses above make me like this better than the huge Stop & Shop I used when living in Brookline Village. Not a fan of the customer service desk, but the employees on the floor are very nice & helpful. read more

This is the worst grocery store you could possibly visit. The only way it stays in business is that is in the middle of a residential area and some people don't have cars. Avoid going here at all costs. They got rid of their self-check out line so now you have to wait in a line of 3-5 customers (between 15-30 minutes) even if you are only grabbing a carton of eggs. Their produce is atrocious and more often than not spoiled. Their meat selection is a grade above what you may find at a 7-11. They also consistently run out of things and stop carrying items for no reason. The staff all have an enormous chip on their shoulder and are unhelpful to say the least. I would rather drive in the middle of rush hour to the four other wonderful grocery stores located in the brookline/chestnut hill are then walk the one block to this one. The new renovation is a DISASTER. They have turned a good small supermarket into a giant convenience store. It is now loaded with high-priced prepared foods and unusual groceries and they have removed lots of the basics. Anyone who really cooks is unlikely to find what they need here. The produce and fish departments are still excellent, but the groceries look like the selection at CVS. I've shopped here for 33 years, and now I have to go to other stores. read more

Deserves no stars, rotten produce most of the time. They have no qualms about selling produce and other goods that have expired. If you try to return it or anything else they are rude rude rude. God forbid you don't have your receipt. Even if it is under $5, you would think they would have to close down to refund you--never an apology.I am 67 yrs old and have a good income but I won't throw away my good money and keep bad items. They used to refund you double with a liberal return policy, now they want you to eat the bad food! Rude old lady with blonde hair told me I drank half the juice....it was about 1/4 at most. What happened to the customer is always right? I asked if I should have poured the glass of juice I spit out that was spoiled back into the container. Bottom line, a real hassle to return with or without receipt. They must be desperate for money and I bet they will close. Rude customer service, poor selection, unexperienced and ignorant people in fish, meat and deli, seems they are always training people, can't they keep their employees?, and outdated and rotten items are just the tip of the iceberg. Find another place to shop. WF, TJ or Wegmans in CH. The Star up there is much better if you like Star. The only reason I go to this store is for it's convenient location because without a car, sometimes I have no choice but to shop here. I've never left a review for a grocery store, but only because I've never had so many complaints about one. I can't say how many times I've had to go to another store because of inconsistent stocking. There was one item in particular that was out of stock for about a month. I've purchased yogurt here on a few occasions that I didn't realize was bad until I took an unpleasant spoonful. I've seen food on the shelves that are expired, but still being sold. How is that even legal?? I've had to return so many items, unfresh produce, stale bread, rotten yogurt. I try to stock up on items at Whole Foods now because the price is the same, and the food is 100 times better. On top of everything, the service is atrocious. I consistently see people hanging out and chatting while customers are waiting to be checked out. It takes forever to get through the line, especially since they got rid of the self-checkout for two express lanes that are frequently not even being used. The customer service here is incompetent and unhelpful and sometimes rude. There's a guy who bags here who literally looks down into the bag as he suspends the items above and watches each one as he drops them into the bag, bananas first and everything on top. I have lived down the street from this store for about a year and half now. I love that it is so close but as others have expressed in their reviews, it is not worth it. More times than not the produce at this store is not fresh. I have pointed out to the employees fruit with mold and have had to return rotten brussel sprouts. Just last night I bought some bacon only to discover a LARGE BLACK HAIR in the unopened package. Now I understand this falls under the responsibility of the inspection team for the product's brand however, the hair is so big it is impossible to miss. I am surprised they put it on the shelf to be sold. This definitely ended up being more inconvenient than convenient. Shame on you Star Market. read more

Grocery store aisles? More like an obstacle course. The way things are arranged makes no sense. You have to go PAST the cashier area to get to the drug store/toiletries section! The only good thing used to be that they had self check-out scanners so I could do it myself, without having to deal with incompetent staff. But they took them away! read more

The staff is friendly, but the produce does not seem as fresh as at other Star Market locations (not sure why this would be - its the same chain of stores, right?). Also, I've found expired items in the dairy section and on the shelves on multiple occasions. Once I found chocolate pudding that was expired by a couple weeks - after I pointed it out to customer service, they took care of the problem and the item was promptly removed. read more

I don't recommend buying their fresh fish-I had a nasty allergic reaction after eating some (fully cooked) fish from this store, most likely caused by improper storage. I've also bought produce at this store several times that turned out to be spoiled when I brought it home. The prices are also high, even compared to other stores in the area. I like Star Market. It's convenient, the food is fresh, it has a small but nice selection of Jewish/Israeli food which I am fond of. They also have a small 'natural' food section with all that stuff that whole foods has. Their apples are a million times better the Whole Foods and they always have what I am looking for, be it parchment paper or dill. They have a tiny selection of cookware, but again everything I like. Some of the staff is a bit odd I but I kind of like that. Sometimes the check out person can take forever but they have self check outs to balance that out. I enjoy going there after work if I need something. There is never a lot people, it's clean and just a pleasant place to be. It does not stress me out. read more
