My boss decided to splurge on good pizza instead of the usual Pizza Hut (bleh) for our Friday meeting. I suggested Pink's but then we agreed on Star since it was down the street. This was my first time ordering from here, I had eaten at the Upper Kirby once before and liked it ok. I ordered 4 pizzas. One pepperoni and one sausage for the nit picky eaters, one Joe's (spinach) and one Chicken Alfredo pizza both on hand tossed wheat ...my choices of course. They quoted me an hour and showed up in 45mins. The quality of these pizzas blew all my co-workers away. (Poor deprived people...they live outside the loop lol) The specialty pizzas I picked out were phenomenal. Cooked to perfection and fully loaded with the fixin's. They gave us complimentary plates, massive napkins and plastic silverware. FYI: If you order with a credit card they will need to take an imprint of it when the delivery person arrives. Favorite pizza in Houston. Their Margerita pizza is so authentic it tastes almost straight out of Venice. Best I have eaten in the States. Mmm...love Star Pizza! I've been going there since I was 12 or 13. I actually had my 14th birthday party at this location. :) Well, before it moved to the building it's at now. I'm a picky pizza eater so give me pepperoni, cheese and now they offer alfredo sauce instead of marinara...and I'm good! This place offers yummy salads too! I really hate when I get a food baby and I really, really hate when I give myself a food baby from terrible food. Houston must really have crappy pizza if people love Star Pizza as much as they do. I went with some girlfriends at about 8:45 on a Friday night. Stress and allergies made me neglect to eat the entire day so I showed up famished. They didn't take long seating us but they sat us in a section where the waiter was clearly in over his head. He handled it with grace and humor so I give him thumbs up for that, but it still took 15 minutes for drinks 20 minutes to order and about an hour for a pizza. I almost ate my arm. We got the baked goat cheese and it came with boring french bread that just wasn't that good. The pizza was doughy, heavy on cheese, light on the meat and light on the sauce. OK, let's get real people...we really don't understand how this place is still open? Why are people eating here? Sure, the service staff were cool when not appearing overly board and downtrodden about having to work in such a place, but it boils down to this - she doesn't think it's as good as a Pizza Hut (which is a bad thing in case you were wondering) and he is pretty convinced this is what you would have if a Pizza Hut and a Gatti's pizza had a child, locked him in the basement his entire life and only pushed frozen, pre-packaged foods under the door. It feels cold inside, like you walked into the place where all shades of pizza possibility are banished for failing to be editable and doing a major dis-service to the word "pizza". The breadsticks were dry and we are pretty sure came from CostCo; the french bread had to have come from the day old shelf rack down at the Sunbeam factory and the pizza - no wait, the thing they were trying to pass off as pizza - was basically a circular metal tray where fluid of some descript collected in a puddle in the center ensuring all toppings, cheese, sauce and some form of grain turned into what I am pretty sure they used in Ghostbuster's II for the flowing river of slime under the city. I loved this place dearly and frequently ordered the grossly overpriced but yummy deep dish Joe's. Last night will be my last order. Won't bore you with the details but myself and my dining companion experienced the joy of it "coming out both ends" while eating Star and watching the True Blood finale. Now, it could have been the show that made us sick but doctors and scientists agree that it was most likely the pizza. After posting rude and grotesque complaints to their Face Book page, Star declines to comment, much less beg for forgiveness or issue a refund. Maybe the staff are busy watching Proactive infomercials or In disposed on the John. That gives me an idea... I've heard great things about this place and have seen plenty of pics of their pies. Tired of salivating over this place, we finally got over to the Harvard St. location for a meal. Seated promptly at a 4 top since we expected more family and ended up with 7 ppl. The excellent waiter promptly pulled up another 4 top and extended our dining environment. I simply wanted to try both their NY style pizza and their much lauded Deep Dish Pizza. My only experience with real Chicago style deep dish was at Gino's in downtown Chicago but I really prefer Giordanos Famous Chicago Style Pizza with the top layer of crust and stuffed with loads of spinach, mushrooms and cheese. The only place around here to get something close is Mangia, in Austin although it's now called Pizza Bistro and has mixed reviews. Split the large Caesar and it came out in 2 bowls, thank you. Crispy romaine and excellent dressing. On to the pizza. Ordered the deep dish Starburst sans the pepperoni, a NY with chopped tomatoes and red onion and a Margherita. The deep dish Starburst was excellent. These pies usually have way too much dough but this pie was just the right combination of dough, sauce, cheese and toppings....delicious. The NY style pizza was good but really pretty average with the Margherita the same. The Deep Dish is definitely the star here, pardon the pun. Yes the crust gets soggy but show me a deep dish that doesn't and I'll show you a deep dish with an inch of doughy crust. I'm just fine with a knife and fork, thank you. Crisp and very accurate service to a tricky bunch with a lot of special requests, nice atmosphere with outdoor seating and the best Deep Dish this side of State Street makes Star Pizza a stand out in this category. We fed 7 ppl for around a hundred bucks so it's not expensive either. I hear that the lunch buffet is really good as well but it's a pretty long way to go from Austin for lunch. Recommended to me by several people I had relatively high expectations coming into lunch when I visited. Table was dirty, sat is in the very back corner on a not-so-crowded day, while being waited on by a waitress that was working off what appeared to be a steep hangover. While I like eating food in clean, well run establishments, tremendous food trumps all. Unfortunately that was not the case. Ordered a Chicken Alfredo deep dish pizza and a few side salads. Side salads were fine but the pizza.... when I order a deep dish pizza, I want a deep dish pizza. This is the age of the internet and cheap two way plain tickets. If you don't know what deep dish pizza is, google or southwest yourself to Chicago and learn. The pizza itself was pretty decent, but lacked the overall depth and crust characteristics of a good Chi-style pizza. Perhaps Star #1 is that much better? I wish I could respond to all negative reviews of this place and springboard off of all the positives that really resonate with me. But alas, there are simply too many of us with too many opinions ;-) This review is WAY overdue. Also, please keep in mind this is for Star #2 on Washington & Harvard. I've never been to the other location and am sure they differ at least slightly. I've lived all over the US, and have had many, many different types of pizzas; everything from restaurants to big chains. Although I've not lived in Chicago or NY (personally where I've found the best pizzas ever), I've eaten at numerous places in each city. Truly, I've eaten more pizza and pizza-like products than any person should be allowed. That said, Houston has long been a pizza disappointment for me. Fuzzy's back in the early/mid 2000's had what I thought was the best until they changed their sauce and cheese and overall quality dropped (just my opinion and I won't complain if its the most convenient place to go). I then found Barry's pizza on Richmond and thought I'd found the best. It wasn't very close and wasn't the best I'd ever had, although quite good. Then, I moved to the Rice Military area and discovered Star Pizza #2. I had a couple different pizzas (never with deep dish as I consider that too much bread) and was pretty impressed. I came across the Starburst with whole wheat crust and fell in love! I add fresh jalapeño (yikes! I know it's a sin for you purists!) and try to never leave any leftovers...funny thing, this isn't the best pizza for the next day. Not sure why, but it simply isn't that great warmed back up??? Again, not the deep dish, but hand-tossed. Anyway, had to add to the long list of reviews since I truly find their pizza (and spinach salad/ranch) to be the BEST in Houston. As Ken W. says, Star Pizza is the "Best deep dish pizza in Houston outside of Chicago." Not a good thing in my eyes though. I'm glad it's there, Star is where I go when I crave a deep dish and it's fine pizza--I just don't think it's great. It certainly doesn't rival Chicago deep dish's. That being said. I recommend the Salsa Verde pizza if you don't mind a little heat. The Salsa Verde is one of their more unique inventions. Other than that we tend to build our own pizza when we're there. *Dislcaimer: Review for Delivery Only* Nothing says "join us for a house party" quite like pizza & booze. Or at least that was the angle my friend went for a few months back. It worked, since quite a few people RSVP'd, so she called up this place to deliver while we enjoyed some adult beverages & avoided driving. Despite it being a hectic holiday weekend, Star Pizza came thru and delivered on time & for relatively cheap. We ended up with 4 large pizzas of varying toppings & had enough to feed everyone that evening and several hungry stayer-overs the next day. I was particularly a fan of the pepperoni & the supreme - both were absolutely loaded with toppings and the sauce was perfection. I'm not big on crusts to begin with, but this stuff was pretty darn good. Definitely a fabulously made & well-rounded pizza (no pun intended... ok, maybe a little bit). I can't bring myself to do 5 stars just yet because I haven't dined in here. I'll make sure to get off my duff next time & go to the restaurant itself for the full Star Pizza experience! read more

Ok I'm sure a bunch of people will think I'm being too hard on Star's pizza but I don't see anything special about this pizza! We came on a Sunday night and wanted something different than Pink's because that's what we always eat. Well, that was a mistake. We should've stuck with Pinks. Service: slow. Our waitress had too many tables and we needed to track down others to get refills. Caesar salad- tasty. Small size was bigger than I expected. Pizza - we had half starburst and half spinach/garlic pizza. I don't think it tasted fresh. The crust and bread tasted like it was pre made the day before and the bread was hard. The spinach/garlic was actually more flavorful than then starburst which was really surprising. Would I be back? NO Way!!! There are much better places in Houston to get your pizza fix. Also, read about deep dish in other reviews and we saw a deep dish be ordered at table next to us... Guys, that is NOT deep dish. My first and favorite salsa verde pizza! So good and spicy. Excellent crust with a whole wheat option. Good salads as well! Overall solid option for pizza. I've been going to Star Pizza II since it was still a tiny hole on Waugh Dr. The little pac-man game that now sits up front used to be a regularly used table in the restaurant. I thought it was the coolest, hole in the wall mom and pop pizza out there. Since then I've lived in Chicago for five years and returned to find that it has moved to another location that finally has more parking and better lighting. One of the first things I ate when I came back was Star Pizza's chicken alfredo pizza and found it just as delicious as I remembered it being. It was a relief to find that after five years in what is arguably the country's pizza capital, Star Pizza still held up. I usually get it with the wheat deep dish crust and have never been disappointed. I also get the veggie fairly often and it too is consistently excellent. For a starter try the gorgonzola and walnut salad with sun dried tomatoes, or the goat cheese and baguette. It's interesting that in Houston, if you get mom and pop pizza instead of Pizza Hut or Domino's, it's as though you're splurging on better pizza. Whereas in Chicago, if you get anything other than your local pizzeria pizza, it's like you're a cheapskate with poor taste in food. The one thing that hasn't changed for the better is the clientele. It seems that the young, cool, artsy, and hip people who used to eat here have now gotten married and have had kids. I suspect they think that they are still cool and that their kids, who seem to not have any training as to how to act in public, are cool by extension. Guess what? They are no longer cool, they are lame with kids, and their loud kids sure as hell aren't cool. Folks, this is not a FAMILY restaurant. Hire a babysitter and leave your kids at home. Because the next time I go to my favorite pizza place and have my dinner ruined by the obnoxious little kid at the next table with parents who have failed to teach him table manners, I'm going to let you know. This is by far my favorite pizza in Houston. The "starburst" pizza, which is basically a meat-lovers pizza is a cut above anything else I have found in Houston. Every other place feels like glorified Pizza Hut compared to this place. The salads are massive, you can definitely split one if that is not your entire meal. They have baked garlic and goat cheese for an appetizer, and you really can't go wrong with goat cheese and garlic as far as I am concerned. They have a great beer selection with lots of local beers, and they even offer beer flights, if you have a hard time making up your mind, or just want to try all the beers like me. Hands down best pizza in Houston. Interior is clean and well kept, it has a nice warm homey feel to it. We were quickly greeted and sat immediately (party of 2) on a Sunday evening. Staff was friendly and attentive but didn't hover too much. They have an extensive menu with pastas, soups, salads, appetizers and of course pizza! At least a dozen different types of pizza you can order from, chicken Alfredo being among these options. You're given the option to create your own pizza as well. We opted for the deep dish pepperoni pizza. They served it hot and ready to go. Pulling up the spatula, long thick strings of cheese lift with the slice and it is positively beautiful. Been here 2 times before and honestly never like it. My partner suggested to have pizza last night and after looking thru Yelp, i decided on Pink's Pizza and was excited to try them after reading those rave reviews... Well, we had the goat cheese for starter while waiting for our pizza which were told takes 30-40mins... the baguette were divine, very soft inside and crispy outside, as for the cheese, eh, nothing special really eventhough they were soft enough to be used as spread but just lack the flavor and ummph! I believe that the simplest and yet best way to prepare grilled goat cheese is to top them with some honey afterward, now thats heaven! On with the pizza, we ordered combo, half Chicken Alfredo and half Veggie, thin wheat crust! I attacked the veggie first, now that was yummy. Very generous mixture of fresh veggie that are slightly roasted and still crunchy with just enough melted mozzarella. Eventhough its slightly blend but the flavors from the mushroom, broccoli & cauliflower really mixed well and enough to tease your taste buds. Then i moved on to the Chicken Alfredo, after one bite, i stop and wonder, it tasted the same with the Veggie, the only different is the pieces of chicken & the fresh basil, i did not taste much of the gorgonzola (which is one of my fav cheese)... so, i devoured another 2 slices of the veggie and my partner finished the alfredo! Wide selection of pizza, fun selection of beer...I like this place. It doesn't quite match the level of delicousness that Chicago-style deep dish pizzas have, but they certainly put forth the effort. I had ordered a few deliveries from Star's on Harvard before, with *pretty* decent success, but the last one was, literally, the worst purchased food I have witnessed in my 55 years of existence. The pizza was *just* disgusting. I opened the box and my jaw dropped at the very sight of this.....thing. I picked up the entire pizza by the crust on one side and it just dangled there fully intact. I took, between thumb and forefinger, one edge of the toppping, and peeled the whole thing away in one intact rubbery sheet. It was a flattenned disc of thick, rubbery, plastic-like...stuff. It looked and felt like fake vomit. The chicken sandwich I ordered with it was an unrecognizable, flattened, cold, amorphous, disgusting blob. I've only tried Star delivery, so don't know what the atmosphere is. But the pizza is tasty and..garlic-y. Good thing I'm a garlic lover. I'll be honest, it tastes better than it looks. Slices are big, cheese can look a little plasticy after sitting out a bit (but what kind of cheese doesn't?), but one bite into the spinach tomato pizza erased my suspicions. Crust was a tad hard, but i could taste the garlic bits still, cheese was fresh, perfect amount of tomatoes. The disgruntled employee who took my delivery order by phone said it would be about 40 minutes. EXACTLY 40 minutes later, the doorbell rang with our pizza- hot and ready to eat. The whole wheat crust was wonderful and didn't even taste like whole wheat- which I think is a good thing. We got the margarita pizza (plus chicken) and even though it went pretty heavy on the garlic, the flavor was amazing. Meh. Too quote Jim Carey, "I've had better." Nothing horrible, but definitely not how I like my pizza, and I LOVE deep dish pizza. Seemed like a hybrid btwn regular pizza and a deep dish because the back of the crust was pretty tall like a deep dish, but the rest of the pizza was pretty low like a regular pizza. I prefer more like BJs Pizzeria style where everything is big a fluffy. Also, there was a horrible cheese to sauce ratio. I prefer more like 2:1 cheese:sauce and this was more like 1:2 (too much sauce and not enough cheese). Also had a small caesar salad which was pretty disappointing. I ususally avoid star pizza because it takes sooo long to get your pizza! The food is great, I recently drove by at lunchtime and decided to go in for the pizza buffet. It was awesome, the pizza was fresh there lots of varieties and they also included a salad bar and iced tea for under 9 dollars. Pizza and beer go together like PB&J in my book. So when your pizza arrives and you and your boyfriend have had empty beers for at least 5-10 minutes, I'm not a happy camper. Our waiter had way too many tables last night and had a hard time keeping up, and that's not too impressive on Wednesday night. That being said, our deep dish Starburst was delicious as always. The original Star Pizza has been my go to for pizza in Houston for years, but now that I live right down the street from #2, I figured we had to give it a shot. Everything on the pizza is fresh, and the deals they have on pitchers of soda is great :) The staff was super friendly and helped my then boyfriend and I agree on a delicious pizza with his brother and sister-in-law... We each wanted something different and they actually made us all happy by only putting certain ingredients on certain halves...Truly helpful! The crust was awesome too....my favorite part! I have been in Houston for 15 years and this is my favorite pizza. I'm actually a bit of a pizza snob and until I found this place I was convinced you could not get decent pizza south of New Jersey or west of Ohio. I looked for years for decent pizza and could not find much. I found Star about 6 years ago and have been going ever since. I took my gf here when we started dating 2 years ago and she was astonished that such a good place was so close to her apartment and she had never been there before. I like the thin wheat crust pizza but you can't go wrong with anything here. Parking can be a pain on a Friday or Saturday night, but I usually get take out so I use one of the take out parking spots so its not a problem for me. This place always comes up in the "best of..." lists so I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said except to offer my endorsement. read more

Star Pizza serves the best pizza I've had in Houston, but that's like saying you've had the best Mexican in Des Moines (sorry Des Moines, nothing personal). It just doesn't stack up to what you can get in other cities. So I give it 4 stars, though effectively I am becoming the yelpers I loathe...those who write things like: "This joint serves mediocre bar-food and watered down drinks at outrageous prices, but what do you expect from a tourist trap? ***** 5 stars!!!". It is good pizza, though, and I do keep coming back. I've tried some others in the Loop, but they just don't compare. I prefer thin crust pizza, which Star is able to make a reasonable approximation of, though it is a bit on the doughy side. I really like the wheat crust option as something different. The biggest draws for me are the quality of the toppings. The taste really shows there. They tend to lean to what I consider traditional, tried-and-true topping options, but of course you can mix and match (but it ain't cheap). The cheese is very thick and melty, and delicious...though it tends to slide around a bit during delivery. And they are pretty good about delivering it hot. Then again, so far I've only ordered it in the summer in Houston--not hard to get that one right. We'll see come December ;) read more

What can I say about Star Pizza that isn't great. Whenever I want amazing pizza, I get in my car and drive 25 miles to Star. They have 2 locations but I must say you can't tell the difference! Star has great beers, especially local brews, like No Label and Shiner. Pizzas are made any way you want it, white crust or wheat, white sauce or red or choose one of their amazing pizzas, like the Salsa Verde. Also their Baked Goat Cheese is to die for!
