Decorated with photos from 1901, when the restaurant started.

Not just a meal. It is a chance to step back in time and experience a meal in a simpler time. It has a great American, old time diner feel. It's the real deal. It is California's oldest, continuously operated restaurant. Yeah, the real thing. Hearty breakfasts are their irresistible special. Fluffy eggs, making yummy omelets. I got the veggies omelet with cheese, mushrooms and spinach. Very tasty. I had the golden perfect hash browns and sourdough toast. Oh sweet! Friends had biscuits and gravey. Another had the breakfast special. So yummy! The ambience was Norman Rockwell, meets Americana, old time vintage diner. Service is friendly and genuine. Substitutions are no problem. The pace is slower, friendly and homey. Our waitress was awesome. They have a great tradtional lunch menu, as well. There are burgers, salads and sandwiches. The hot roast beef sandwich looked delish. The grilled cheese sandwich is a tasty, traditional favorite. Don't try the French Toast, as you will be craving it forever. Each bite is paradise. You've been warned. Both the golden hash browns and homestyle potatoes are great! Their soup of the day always good. They do great salads, and traditional sandwiches. It is special to eat something your great grandmother might have eaten. Nothing trendy here, just great food, perfected over 124 years. They are open from 7:15am to 1:00pm. Only Monday through Friday. Closed Saturday and Sunday. Expect to wait, as good things, well done, take time. Step back in time, and experience a leisuely meal. The restaurant is decorated with Americana and photos from 1901. Yes, 1901. Some good things, are timeless and authentic.

If you are addicted to snazzy and pop, go to Denny's or somewhere, but if you want to enjoy the type of America when life was easier, most of definitely go to Star Restaurant in Hanford. A return to an earlier time, and decorated accordingly, with lower prices, hard working wait staff, home cooking - nothing sent from corporate freezers, a look at the past -back to1901, and pancakes the size everyone used to serve is what you will find. Don't be like some of the reviewers who are probably so stressed and hurried, they are looking for a McDonald's experience in a jewel of the past. Stop demanding and enjoy what is there. Just be pleasant, smile and say thank you when being served by some of the hardest working waitresses in the west - the way it used to be mostly everywhere. You will leave calm, well fed, and glad you slowed down a bit to enjoy the finer things in life - your neighbors, great food and prices, and poss some disdain toward our more modern ways. Enjoy this hometown favorite!

First time trying this place. Staff is friendly. Service was good. Food was really good. Ambience is old school diner style. A lot of Norman Rockwell pictures and Coca Cola memorabilia as well as pictures from 1901.

Good basic breakfast, huge pancake, good price for the special, but the day I was there, they only had one waitress and the place was several tables and was getting busier. There were plenty of empty tables when I sat down, but wait was very long, which was problematic for me since 2 eggs, sausage, and a pancake should take 40 mins tops from order to exit and I was there almost twice that, which made me pretty late for my next activity. It was almost 30 minutes before I even got to order. I don't have anything bad to say about this place, but that's too long for me for a simple breakfast.

Nostalgic ambiance, classic dishes, reasonable portions. Personal faves include the Biscuits and Gravy and their Cold tuna sandwich :)

They raised the price of the Breakfast Special to $7.49. Still the best deal in town. Well worth the price.

It is a simple place with good food and good service. Add low price and we have a winner. It is easily one of the best eateries in town.

I've had pupusas before, but this is the first time trying other dishes at an El Salvador…read morerestaurant. I welcomed the opportunity to try something different. I was prepared for "similar to Mexican, yet different". The grilled beef steak(like carne asada) with oiled rice and salad was served with a small side plate of round thick tortilla -like bread. Sort of like a pupusa without a filling. I can tell there was corn meal in it. I ordered the hibiscus tea. It was tasty and refreshing. One of my dining companions ordered a dish that was as somewhat similar to a chile relleno, only filled with ground beef and without cheese. It was tasty and savory, but had no heat, no chiles. It was a little awkward for me, because had no expectations of what to expect. The meat was a little salty, and tasted good. The serving portions were of good size. I do like the heat of Mexican food, so I was a little disappointed the El Salvadoran food isn't. Next time, illstick to the pupusas. Service was attentive.

We tried 6 different pupusas (the best, chicken, pork, jalapeño, garlic, and zucchini), a side order of rice and beans, and two drinks (Jamaica and Ensalada). We loved it all, but our favorite was the chicken, garlic, and jalapeño! We loved it so much... we came back on Sunday with everyone else. The food was fresh and tasty, it came out quick, and they were very attentive.
