After being let down repeatedly by my local smog place (Marin Smog on San Pablo Ave were never open when they said they would be) I found an alternative in Star Smog Check and boy what a refreshing contrast! I called ahead to make sure they were open and JL picked up to say he'd happily take me in for the test. As soon as I rolled up to the place JL was outside, saw me coming and signalled me to drive straight into his garage. He literally had his OBDII plug at the ready and no sooner had I stepped out the car he was in there getting started. I was in and out the door in under 10mins. I called on 1pm on Sunday and got an appointment at 1:30pm. The appointment took 15 minutes. Mohammed told me that two recalls on my car were holding up my DMV registration. I've successfully gotten other recommendations/smog checks at other locations in past, but based on positive Yelp reviews, I decided to give Star Smog Check a try. Since I was making a trip to the Trader Joe's in Corte Madera, I decided somewhat on the spur of the moment to see if Mohammed by any chance could make a same day appointment for me, which he did. As others have noted, Mohammed was both hospitable and efficient, easy going and friendly. He sent me a text with directions and a photo as well - which was very helpful, as the first time I accidentally drove past the entrance! (The building is unassuming looking if you haven't been there before.) He also gave me a bottle of water and some dates while I was waiting in the air conditioned waiting room, which was very gracious - but - The real point is that I was in and out with my smog certificate and receipts in very short order, at a reasonable price. I realized my smog and registration was due in a couple of days. I looked for Smog places in the area and called Star Smog first, the owner answered and stated he was busy and would give me a call back in a few minutes. These are the types of small businesses that are a delight to go to. Mohammed truly cares about his business and customers and clearly takes great pride in delivering top notch service. This is also because he clearly knows what he's doing. My appointment was easy to book and Mohammed on both occasions took care to confirm, ensure I had directions and on the re-check, called me back to book a sooner appt. The check itself was speedy. Much shorter than I had settled in for his well-AC'd waiting room. While I had to do a re-check due to fluid in the line at the time of the smog check, Mohammed helped diagnose the reason for the fluid (a last minute detail on my part) and how to clear the problem before the free re-check.
