I have an older car, 1991, and I understand that it's a more involved process to get a smog check, but the customer experience at Star Smog & Lube was really terrible. TWICE over a month I went down to get a smog check and both times the machine was down, fishy, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. TWICE MORE over the next month I was called by Star Smog & Lube letting me know that the machine / computer was working so I go down the next day and am turned away because the machine / computer isn't working. Ridiculous. If they aren't able to or don't want to smog older cars and they just told me that the first time I'd understand. But all this back and forth, and conflicting information from the techs and reception, and FOUR unsuccessful trips down there is too much. Maybe I should have learned my lesson after the second or third time. DO NOT take your 1995 or older car / truck / van here, Star Smog & Lube will NOT test you. read more

My Prius passed the smog emissions test but Star Smog & Lube refused to issue a Smog Certificate because there was duct tape sealing a rodent hole in the air filter box. The rodent damage has been present when the car passed multiple smog tests over the years since 2012 - never an issue with other test sites. This outfit is an outlier - other shops never had a problem issuing a smog certificate and the Toyota dealer has never recommended replacing the air filter box before - the car runs fine. read more

I've been going to this location for several years now, although the current owner bought it about 2 years previously, which might be a record for longevity. It's always been one of the least expensive, no-hassle places I've been, with friendly staff and a decent waiting room decorated with interesting old automobile artifacts, ads, and photos. They had coffee and water available. The current owner (I believe she was the owner) was very friendly and energetic, working quickly to take care of everything. I had no appointment, so it took perhaps an hour waiting, but I was reading and didn't really notice. The place is easy to find, unlike a lot of places I've been to that are hidden behind other businesses. Also, there's plenty of parking in a big lot for several businesses, and easy access to the freeway. Also, my car, a 2005 model, often costs extra at other places, but not here. They charge extra for pre-2000 models. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place and probably would never come back even though I live right around the corner. I got my oil changed here and it went ok I guess. They said 30 minutes which turned into 60 minutes. I had an appointment but that literally didn't mean anything. Other than that, I kind of question whether they actually changed the oil since it looked pretty dirty when I checked in the next day. They at least took the filter off because they dripped oil everywhere and the car was smoking for a few days later. It's very sloppy for sure. This place is run by a bunch of kids that barely know how to do oil changes and smog checks. Wouldn't recommend coming here if you actually care about your car. read more

Anne is great at the front desk. Friendly as all get out! I made two separate appointments, two different days, for my vehicles. The planets aligned, birds were singing, it wasn't too hot, because both smog checks were in-and-out. Around 10 minutes each. No one was ahead of me. Probably better to make an appointment rather than dropping by. There's no absolute guarantee there will be no waiting. Glad they still send the coupons out in the monthly mailers, because I brought (1) each time. They are one of the most economical smog shops around. ( Suggestion: Provide bottled water. WARNING: Walnut Creek Smog Repair & Oil seriously damaged my car from a botched oiled change! I was in need of an oil change so I looked online for a shop offering a coupon. I found Walnut Creek Smog Repair & Lube's website, which offered a synthetic oil change for $22.95. I walked into the non-air conditioned shop on a warm Sunday afternoon where I waited about 3 - 4 minutes for the receptionist (Andrea?) to wrap up a personal phone call. Once finished, she greeted me and was fairly polite. When I presented the coupon she explained the my car's big engine takes extra oil (it's a 2011 2.0 Jetta?) and that it takes a more expensive oil filter. Both upcharges. My oil change came out to $39.73. The shop advertises quick oil changes. However, it took 1 hour and 45 minutes from start to finish. The real issues began a few days later. Wednesday of that week I was driving to work when my oil light came on. I pulled into a gas station and checked my oil. It was bone dry and I could hear and feel a faint rumble. When I looked under my car I noticed that I was leaking a lot of oil. I immediately called the shop, but no one answered and the voice mail was full. I elected to not drive my car back from San Rafael to Orinda (35 miles) as to not cause any engine damage. After calling the shop multiple times, I finally reached a person. She put me in contact with a technician named Brandon. I explained the situation and how I was very concerned that damage was already done. He suggested that I drive to Walnut Creek (45 miles away) to have it checked out. I explain that would be insane and would probably cause serve engine damage. He brushed this and the knocking noise / vibration off by saying that he had special tricks to repair such damage. He proudly exclaimed that he gets knocking engines to pass smog all the time. Remind you my car is 3 years old, not a 70's clunker trying to limbo under the smog test. We eventually agreed to have my car towed to a local shop in Marin. I took my car to Sonnen VW in San Rafael where they addressed my concerns of engine damage and inspected the car. They determined that the original oil filter was pulled out improperly, tearing the filter and leaving the rubber gasket deep inside. The new oil filter was then installed on top of that O ring, which did not create a proper seal and also damaged part of new filter. The inspection, new filter, cleaning out all the oil from the engine bay (which was covered from 5 qts of oil and now smoking) totaled $225.03. They were unable to determine if there was damage to the cylinders without measuring the cylinder tolerances. Sonnen believed that this was probably unnecessary since the faint knock had subsided. A few days later when I finally got a hold of Brandon, he became very argumentative and accusative. He yelled through the phone that there was no way his shop could have done that. First he claimed that I was trying to scam them, stating "we're not just going to open up the cash register and give the money!" - which was not what I was asking for. Then he claimed that Sonnen had planted the gasket inside my car. He also stated that unless I was on the shop floor when the car was on lift and had filmed the Sonnen mechanic removing the part, I couldn't prove it was their fault, thus I had no case. Over the course of half a dozen calls, I constantly asked to speak to a manager or the owner, but he and refused to give me anyone else's name. I finally threatened that if this was not resolved I would seek legal council and take the business to court. At this point he said "I'll see what I can do" and hung up. The shop began ignoring my emails and not returning my calls (which I left with the receptions because there was still no voice mail set up). Meanwhile he still insisted that this whole ordeal was my fault. I ended up filing a complaint in small claims court. I also compiled all of the necessary documents, which I also sent to Brandon via email - who never responded, despite saying he would. This included Sonnen's report, the service receipt, the original oil change receipt, the gasket they forgot to remove, and the damaged oil filter they installed. Still no response. FINALLY, on 7/17 after calling under a different first name I got Brandon on the line. He agreed to write me a check for the total amount of $280.76 (the amount of the service, plus a refund. This did not include the tow and the many hours of my life I wasted). I was skeptical, but he insisted that "he would personally take the check to the post office today". Three week later the check never arrived. Once again, I called and called. I finally spoke to someone in the office who assured me that he had just put it in the mail (26 days later) and I should be receiving it any day now. I have yet to receive that check. I will update if I ever receive it or if I ever hear back. UPDATE: 8/21 - I received a check for the full asking amount ($280.76). read more

Got a notice from the DMV that my vehicle needed to pass a smog check. I found a coupon for cheap and decided to use it. The lady at the front desk was talking on her cell phone, and judging from the conversation to her friend, and decided to wait. Three minutes passed before she finally decided to end the call. After filling out the paper work, presenting the coupon, and handing the keys over, I asked how long the wait was. I was pressed for time and 45 minutes seemed like a long time, but I rationalized that it was better than coming back again. 45 minutes later, I was walking back and saw my car just being pulled into the garage for service. The lady at the front was literally cursing at her friend on the cell phone. Not wanting to get involved, I waited another 5 minutes for her to get off the phone. 'It'll be ready in 10 minutes.' She said before getting up to head to the garage and slamming the door. Due to lack of anything better to do. I decided to draft this review. The lady from the desk came back and was now crying on the phone. Fast forward 10 minutes, I could see my car being pulled into the parking area. It was finally done, but the lady was still crying on the phone, talking to her mom. The whole Smog check ended up taking over an hour. Where do they get these people? This place is the best! Steven the owner is so awesome. So my car battery died a few days ago and I was referred here through a friend. Not only did Steven (the owner) see me the same day, he also had me out of there super quick, was totally professional and great to deal with. I felt like him and his team worked together really well and were able to get to the bottom of the problem quickly and fix it fast. As a young single girl, I have had a lot of really bad experiences at repair shops in the past where I felt like I was being totally scammed (at a Honda dealership in Scottsdale, AZ: the guy said that some special belt needed to be replaced so I brought my boyfriend back to talk to him more about it and it turns out that the type of belt he told me was broken doesn't even exist!) so I really appreciate a place like this where I know that I can trust my mechanic and his team. Maybe it stemmed from being referred from someone I trusted already, but I felt comfortable bringing up some other smaller things that had been bothering me over the last few months (like a weird notification light on the dash, some electrical issues with the radio etc.) and they were able to diagnose those issues quickly as well and offer some great solutions at a super reasonable price. Their waiting room is super clean and comfy, the receptionist was really friendly and they also have this really cool water system in their waiting room called FloWater which was really nice. Parking is pretty easy here too as they have their own lot. I have already been referring friends to this shop and will definitely be back soon as I have officially designated Smog Repair & Lube as my go-to shop for all things auto!
