I highly recommend this place for smog checks. I had difficulties getting the monitor/device/whatever in my car to be ready for the actual smog check and they provided me with information I needed to finally get it good to go. Then it passed the smog check which was very nice. 0 stars. This is the worst Yelp review I have ever written. I took my car there for an oil change. We had an appointment, and when scheduling the appointment, the person on the phone told me the filter and oil would be ordered ahead of time. When we arrived, the guy who does the oil changes wasn't there, the stuff hadn't been ordered, and one of the workers had accidentally taken a customer's key to San Francisco. It felt very chaotic. Additionally, he asked me what type of oil I wanted. It's not a choice-your car either takes regular or synthetic. That was kind of a red flag. He assured me the job would get done. Several hours later, he called and said the car was ready. I waited in the waiting room with several other customers. There was no one at the desk. Finally, someone came into the office from the garage. When he rung me up, he said he didn't usually work the register but the other guy was gone. Again, chaotic. And there was no itemized receipt and I left feeling like I don't even think they changed the oil or the filter. I have no confidence that the work was done, I have no evidence that it was done, and I'm pretty sure I have an oil leak. No one mentioned it. I am shocked that this place has 4 stars, I don't know how. I feel like they took my money but didn't actually do the job. Aren't car places supposed to show you old parts or at least provide a receipt of what they did? And the oil change warning in the car wasn't reset. I will never go back there and I cannot recommend it, based on my experience. read more

Ok I generally don't write negative reviews but my visit to Star is worthy. I called around to get a price for a quick smog and have them install a headlight I had purchased since Prius can be tricky. They said the headlight would be $20.00. Went in and gave them the keys and waited. They smoggged it no problem. When the mechanic started to replace the light I tried to give him some advice as I'd seen someone replace the other bulb. Needless to say a few minutes into it he said this is hard and walked out into the parking lot - gone didn't see him again. Stopped in for a quick oil change. They do two things smog checks and oil changes. Somehow the oil filter didn't get changed and yet the full fee for a synthetic oil change was charged. It was deemed to be an "over sight" not sure how that can be. I won't be going back. read more

I took my car here on 10/29/22 for a synthetic oil change. Had been driving the car daily up until December 8th when my car suddenly gave off a strong burning smell. Kevin, the smog mechanic, worked with me, and used his hand-held scanner to pre-check - thereby avoiding the actual smog check until it was ready. Great guy, and the owner is a decent guy, too. I recommend this store due to their integrity. My car was failed for a smog inspection by a technician based on a visual inspection item regarding the air intake. Since I had never had an issue in previous four inspections over the years, I took the car immediately to another shop down the street. The car passed -- and this is just around 10 minutes later. The technician at the second shop looked at Star Smog and Lube's paperwork and said the car had been failed improperly. When I initially reported this discrepancy, the technician at Star Smog and Lube refused to refund the $49.75 I had been charged for the failed inspection. But, Ann was nice enough to follow up with the store ownership and get me the refund. This kind customer service is exactly what I look for. Mistakes happen. Booked an appointment days in advance. Got there early and after about 45 minutes I realized they hadn't even gotten to my car. When the guy at the desk asked me which cat was mine, he said he would make sure they would pull it now. Another 15 minutes went by, and I explained that it was over an hour since my appointment time. The clerk was very helpful but the service was not done in an timely manner. Wouldn't return. When it came time to pay, I had to wait another 20 min cause everyone seemed to go on break. Complete incompetence regarding smog certification. Failed to understand CA Air Resources Control Board orders for approved equipment despite being presented with the actual State documents. The vehicle even has the proper stickers under the hood. Even when the vehicle passed the emission test they would not issue a smog certification because they couldn't understand the documentation. A complete waste of money with no hope for a refund. Stay away from this business. read more

Long lines and terrible customer service from front desk clerk. After I waited in line twice -I had to leave and come back- they couldn't even change my oil because they said they would have to order an oil filter, which would take another 15-30 minutes and since it was almost 4pm they said they didn't have enough time. Previously the clerk had told me that the latest they could start an oil change would be 4:30! So they had time to do it. She also should've asked me over the phone or when I was in line the first time what kind of car I had so they would know they would need to order a filter. (I had also called in advance before making the drive there so she knew the trouble I was going through and could've asked me over the phone what kind of car I have). Finally the mechanic said he had plans that evening and sent me to jiffy lube around the corner! I was in and out in just under 30 minutes for a smog check after arriving at 8:40 am on a Monday. I had made an appointment online for 8:30 but not sure if that pushed me through the queue faster or not. The price was great, especially with a Groupon. They also had coupons available on their website and emailed me a coupon after my appointment. The waiting area is a little dated and small with no a/c but a fan running. If I could give them 6 stars, I would!!! I recently brought in my Mercedes for a smog test, and not only was the price HALF that of others in the area, but they are by far the nicest and most efficient smog testers in the area. My car did not pass smog the first time that I brought it in due to the OBDII system not being ready as I just replaced both batteries. They guys gave me a few driving tips and I brought it back in 2 days later, and boom, it passed. I made an appointment on their online system and I was literally in-and-out within 20 minutes of showing up. When I came back for the retest, instead of wasting time and bringing the car into the shop and hooking it up, one of the guys came out to the parking lot with a handheld unit and checked the OBDII system right there, saying "no reason to waste money if the car isn't ready yet." and then gave me the go-ahead for a full retest once it passed. $10 bucks for the retest is super reasonable. Exact credit for having an amazing Groupon deal. If you need a smog test and go anywhere else, you must love spending more money than required. These guys are top notch!!!! read more
