Nothing left to say that hasn't been said in previous reviews. My car failed the test and I came back for a recheck and a hose repair. I have no clue why the management would leave the shop in the hands of a bunch of teens. I was underquoted by $70, time underestimated by 2 hours. Why? Because "Brandon is only here on weekends and he usually works in Berkeley so maybe he can get the part cheaper there but it's not cheaper here and it's still a good deal for you because it would cost even more if you bought it yourself ". Not really understanding the justification here. Just now leaving the shop after spending four hours waiting with a bill three times what I was expecting to pay. read more

After reviewing ad the lady says no problem she will honor ad. Wait my turn. Tech comes out hands me my keys and says either pay $108 or leave. I took my 2006 Honda S2000 into Star Smog & Lube (SS&L) for a smog check and was informed that it didn't pass because the sensors weren't working. The woman running the desk asked if my battery had gone dead? I told her it had and she told me that the sensors needed to be reset by driving the car for 50 to 100 miles. I was skeptical at first and thought something more serious might be wrong. So, I took the car to Walnut Creek Honda and asked their technician if this was possible. He confirmed what the woman at Star Smog and Lube told me. He suggested that I run through the Honda provided series of driving steps which included warming up for a minute, driving at 65 - 75 mph for 10 seconds and then to 50 mph decelerating to around 50 mph five times and then driving at 55-65mph for 10 minutes with the cruise control on. I did all of the steps that Honda suggested and rescheduled the smog check at SS&L. When I went back, the woman in charge said she's have the technician check the sensors before trying the smog check. Unfortunately the sensors were not all working, AGAIN. The technician said I could try driving for 50 miles at 55 - 65 mph, without the air conditioning on and to bring it back. I went for drive out to Brentwood and back, a little over 50 miles and came back an hour or so later. SS&L took the car right into the bay and EUREKA it passed! Mind you it was a Tuesday morning at 10AM, but I was literally in and out of here in ten minutes for a smog check! They honored the yelp deal, and I walked out paying $50 (2007 year car and certificate). The waiting area is equipped with a television, soda machine, and coffee machine. The waiting area is a bit dated and can get a little cramped. While I was there a man was talking loudly on the phone and the employee behind the desk was on the phone the whole time as well. All in all you can't beat the wait time, I didn't even have a chance to finish my complementary coffee they were done that fast. read more

Our pickup truck needed multiple times before it would pass the smog because we had recently changed the battery and this office patiently checked it 7 times before it would pass the catalytic converter section. They were always gracious and each time gave me tips to improve chances of passing it the next time but it was just a matter of putting up miles on the truck. read more

I love this shop! The manager, Ann is so nice. They have the best price around for a smog and/or oil change. I took my older BMW there the other day and Ann and Juan, the technician were kind enough to check if it could pass a smog check, since I replaced the battery recently. They discovered there was something wrong with the communication between the OBD (On Board Diagnostics) and their tester. Ann went and Jaun went beyond the extra mile by testing several fuses and Ann got the mechanic/owner of the neighboring BMW shop to run over and attempt to diagnose the problem. Brought my previa in to have it smoke tested for leak. They found the issue and also did an oil change while they had it. Great customer service and communication. Parking can be hard around here. It was easy to make an appointment online. Appointments were readily available. When I showed for my appointment, they took me right in, and my smog check was finished within minutes. And afterword, the technician even pointed out a couple places where some hoses were showing wear and advised that I have them replaced when I next service the car. read more

I set up an appointment online for 8:30am after receiving an offer from them. I needed a smog check done, so I thought the timing was perfect. I showed up at 8:20 and waited till 8:45am. NOBODY showed up. The office and the rollup doors never opened. VERY POOR. This is after they sent me two separate "remember your appointment" emails. I would never recommend our use this company ever again. I ended up finding another place not too far away and had a fine experience there. Took my car here for a smog test in order to renew the registration for my car. I contacted them via yelp and they responded quickly with a quote for the cost. I made an appointment using their website hoping to take care of this rather quickly. Apparently making an appointment does not mean anything. When I showed up they were friendly and courteous and the lady at the front desk said it would take 20-30 minutes. Although I live close by, I decided to wait it out based on their time estimate. 45 minutes later I checked in on my car they said there were 3 more cars in front of me. First off what is the point of making an appointment and also how can the estimate be that far off? If they provided a reasonable estimate I could have left my car there and picked it up later. The overall smog check was fine when they finally got around to it, but based on their lack of respect for people's time this was an overall disappointing experience. Total time took 1 hour and 30 minutes of which the actual smog check was 10 minutes. read more

I needed a oil change, so i called them this morning and told them make and model of my car when they asked. They told me it would be $28 total for my car. So i just went there and the receptionist, a chubby girl kept telling me the price is 80 something $ or regular oil is $49 something+ tax lol. I got my keys back from her and left. Summary: -Small family owned shop. -Did the job. -Two minor pricing issues. Detail: Oil Change I had a friend recommend this shop for an oil change and emailed me their oil change coupon for $18.95. Since all these places seem to fail at real pricing, I called gave the office person my make model, etc. She said +$10 for synthetic blend and +$4 for another quart of oil. It ended up being $36+/- due to oil disposal fee, etc. I can understand a promotion to get new business, I can. But as I sat there, I heard time after time the office person telling new customers that the $18.95 did not include this or that. For goodness sake people, just be honest. It reflects poorly upon you. -1 star. Transmission fluid change When I got pricing on the phone for the oil change I asked about changing the transmission fluid at the same time. I was quote $160, I knew the dealer was $209 so that sounded right. When I got there she informed me she had made a mistake and it was $40+/- more. She was gave me the option to not get it, I made the decision to go forward. I don't hold that against them. It ended up being $210 +/-. I was curious about the price so I called 2 high 4 star rated yelp transmission shops and asked about the price. They both said typically $100 to change the fluid, my vehicle was the more expensive one at $160. -1 star. They must have done 8+ smog tests while I was there for 2.5 hours, they might be good for that, don't think I would go back for service. Just OK. PS. I took my car for smog check and it passed the computer test but didn't pass their "visual inspection" whatever that means. They sent me to mechanic shop that quoted $1000 for the repair. Before spending all my money I took my car to a different smog check place and it passed with no issues. They totally tried taking advantage of me. Don't go there. read more

Not sure why there was so many negative reviews but I had no issues. I was recommended to this place this by a friend so I decided to try it out. I needed a Smog check before I registered my 2002 Chevy Silverado. I found a coupon on their website for $22.95 plus certificate. I have a truck so it cost $10 more but that wasn't a problem. The total out the door was $41.20. That's a great price! I went there and everything went smooth. Truck passed and it was ready in 15 minutes. The receptionist was professional and I over heard the owner talking to a customer and he seemed was very nice. He told her he guaranteed the oil price he is charging is the absolute lowest for Synthetic Oil and if she finds it cheaper elsewhere to bring in the coupon or ad and he would refund the difference to her. That's pretty cool. I do my own oil changes so he was correct when he told her the prices just for oil itself at the store not including the labor. I recommended this place to my manager and would to others. Seems legit and the showroom is really nice. Its decorated with old oil cans and automotive signs, etc. read more

All I wanted was to get the smog test on my car taken care of... I called around and decided to go with this place because they said they could take me right away without an appointment. I drove there from my house immediately after hanging up and when I arrived, the man at the counter asked if I had an appointment. I explained the situation and he apologized and said that they couldn't take me for another hour and a half. There were three people waiting ahead of me. I walked out irritated since I literally had just called and he could've cared less. An annoying inconvenience. Went somewhere else. Got out before I would've even been seen by these people. I found them in an ad. I have taken four of my vehicles here for smog checks in the past three months and they are the BEST! They don't over charge you and they are honest so don't waste your time shopping around I've already done it for you. It does cost a little more for SUV's and trucks so keep that in mind but that's how it is eveywhere. Each time I didn't wait more than 30 minutes, they are pleasant to deal with and they are located a block away from hwy 680. I highly recommend this business. read more
