I'm really glad I found this little gem located in a little strip mall on Westheimer (in Montrose). I needed to have a blazer and a sequin + net dress altered, and I was quoted a very high price elsewhere. I found Star Tailor was located near me and requested a quote directly through Yelp, to which the owner responded quickly. He honored the price he quoted me at, and I paid $40 for both items. He had a 3-day turnaround, and he did a wonderful job! Very friendly, listens to feedback when you say what you want done, and also gives his input. I will definitely be back when I need additional items tailored. read more

I had a very mixed experience from this place. came here from the yelp search. at first I was happy cuz the owner was very nice, and the price was reasonable. but the the frustration starts from the moment I saw how my dress turned out. my dress was out of it's original shape completely. the useless me decided to just accept it since he tried to convince me that it looks ok. plus his kid was doing hw there and looking all innocent, so I tired not to be a jerk. but I found a whole on the neckline when I got home.. ugh, so I called, he apologized and told me to drop it over again. so I did, but it couldn't be fixed at the same day, so we made a total of 3 "round trips" just for this dress. the worst part? we live an hour and half away from Houston. ya. me and my bf do visit Houston every other weekend. but for fun and good food, not for this. the dress after all turned out ok, if I don't look into details ( rough stitches). i don't think I will be back to this place, but I apprieciate the owner's nice attitude. if you have a simple job like altering length type, I do recommend this place. read more

I'm surprised by all the positive reviews. I had two very simple requests for this place - hem a pair of designer jeans and put the original hem back on, and I had a bow that was falling off a dress that needed a tight sew on (something I should have just attempted myself no matter how incompetent I am with a needle and thread). The jeans were hemmed too short and even a little crooked and definitely do NOT have the original hem on them. I don't think they actually did anything with the bow given that it's still dangling off my dress. I can't imagine having them do something that requires more complicated tailoring given the shoddy work done on my easy pieces. read more

I needed a tailor to hem some new pants and I turned to Yelp. Unfortunately, I'm not raving about my experience.. Basically, Star Tailor was 0 for 3 in my case: I requested "original hem" on one pair and when I got them back - they were just hemmed - no original hem. The second pair was still too long and the third pair, which was supposed to be taken in at the waist is now completed FUBAR'd. I'm always kind of amazed when a tailor puts a single pin in my clothing to mark the alteration...far be it for me to argue with a person's craft! So I didn't question the way he was going to take in my too-large trousers. Anyway, I'm no expert, but he didn't account for the way they were cut because now they dip way too low in the back. Mr. Nguyen is truly a star tailor. This was my first time at a tailor because I needed my suits tailored for law firm interviews - fast. The shirt sleeves were way too long, and the suits were bulky. I didn't feel confident meeting new people and prospective employers knowing that I didn't look my best. Initially, I was worried that he didn't know what he was doing because there are so many tailors in my area. But when I brought my three skirt suits and three shirts, including one that had a make-up streak that I couldn't remove with anything, he was clear about how we needed to alter the pieces and even got the streak out of my shirt for free. What really set Mr. Nguyen apart was the fact that he wasn't greedy about getting as much money out of me as possible. I brought additional suits that were oversized, and he was honest about them being just too big, instead of taking them and doing a shoddy job. There were also two skirts that fit just right, and he was honest about that too. The clothes were done within 4-5 days (brought them in on a Saturday, done by Wednesday). When I went to pick up my clothes, I was still nervous that they wouldn't come out right. But every single piece fit just perfectly. The price was very fair, especially for a broke law student: around $120 for alterations on 2 suits, 2 shirts, and 1 skirt (and free of charge for removing the streak from a third shirt) - basically 6 pieces. I recently went to another interview - this time for a scholarship - wearing a suit and shirt that Mr. Nguyen altered for me, and I felt very confident. The next day I got the scholarship. I came in for a simple hemming job on some new pants based on the Yelp reviews. While he was pinning the pants I asked for a normal break. He replied "full break?" and I clearly said no, I wanted the typical break - meaning medium, which should be standard. Half a week later, I picked up the pants, and lo and behold they go about two inches over my shoes. Full break, just what I flatly told him I didn't want. Don't go here if you have preferences for your alterations. read more

He does a fantastic job!!! He is fast and able to work with anything item of clothing I bring in. I've had him alter many different items from having my pants made longer, fixing buttons or hems, taking in shirts etc. I am so happy with everything I get altered here. The alterations (simple hemmings) were abysmal - you can see the thread and crease where the pants were done. He also failed to address the stain I pointed out on my dry cleaning. Worst of all, he charged an outrageous amount for all the work. AVOID this place at all costs - you'll be happy you did. UPDATE: Less than two years later, most of the hemming work has completely come undone. Do not come here if you want quality work. read more

This review only applies for the dry cleaning service (I brought in button-down shirts and slacks): Pros: Nice guy. Reasonable service (I gave him clothes Saturday morning and they were ready by Monday evening). Clothes were not damaged. Our first time here and we most certainly will be repeat customers! The main attraction initially was that we could easily walk there from our apartment. There were two other tailors who were also in the same distance but we went in and knew they weren't right for us. He is wonderful! I have been going to him for 4 years despite other cleaners and tailors being closer to my house. Very fast, excellent service, and wonderful quality of work. He is also great at tailoring more high-end pieces too like suits, designer jeans, bridesmaid dresses, and silk gowns. u guys, i have never written a review, but this guy is amazing. i have brought him several pieces. they were all reasonably priced and the work was suberb. i brought him my dog's sweater even and said don't worry about it looking good, it's just for my dog, and he did an awesome job. i just appreciate that so much. sometimes his kids are there and it makes me feel good to support one man's business like that over some big corporation. he does an awesome job and gives good suggestions during the fitting. wearing something that fits makes you feel great! read more

Unfortunately I was not happy with my first visit here. I took a $70 dress to get taken in from the sides and it ended up too tight. I can't wear it like it is so it is ruined. I did mention it but I didn't say much because i knew there was no fixing it. The pricing for it was good, if it would have worked out. read more

I have taken about 8 men's dress shirts to Star Tailor to have the sides taken in (I get them second hand from my fat brother). Star does a great job turning regular fit into slim fit, and though I have not price shopped, I cannot imagine the price being better anywhere else. read more

I couldn't be happier. Took in a bridesmaid dress to be fitted, got it back in the same week! And for half the price of the other shops I talked to. It was only 44!! And the work is excellent! The guy is not super talkative but is still very nice. He fixed a broken bra strap for free while I tried on my dress. Going anywhere else is just a waste of time and money. read more

Blown away by my wonderful experience!! I dropped off a very intricate bridesmaid dress with hundreds of folds with the fabric. I needed pretty much the whole dress altered because it was way too big. I picked it up in two business days for $43. The work was unreal!! He did a beautiful job. he is a excellent professional tailor. i have had many pant alterations from him and the most difficult work he did for me was to attach double racing strips up and down 5 sets of professional work scrubs. he did a remarkably accurate and smooth application, even matched the thread colors to my wild colored strips. he has work done in two days and is a pleasant man to do business with. read more
