First of all, I was expecting to see Joe Hisaishi perform but, instead it was a quartet performing music by Joe Hisaishi. Did I feel scammed? YES! Did I enjoy the music though? YES! Fortunately, the musicians were all top notch professional musicians with peak level musicality other wise I would have walked out... MUSICIANS: Professional and their playing was very soothing. They even performed an encore at the end which was the Legend of Zelda... SERVICE: C+ I felt like I was entering TSA check in at the airport. Phones must be silent. I couldn't even have the screen on. Too strict for a small theatre... AMBIANCE: 7/10 you could hear fire trucks passing by in the background. Do they plan to leave the theater doors open throughout the entire performance? This is definitely very different from Carnegie Hall... I should have known better. A friend and I attended the Candlelight performance. I had been to this theater years back and forgot how convenient the theater is and what great performances they have to offer. They are very organized as far as getting the attendees to their seats. They are also very friendly. We found the place to be very clean and the chairs pretty comfortable. Our tickets were for the C section which was seated further and higher. I thought this was perfect for the performance we were seeing. I will have to keep this place in mind for future shows. I would recommend the theater. Street parking is available and not too far away is a parking garage. Be aware of where you park, watch for timed parking signs. read more

We went to the Star to see Queen by candlelight; a string quartet that played Queen while surrounded by candles. It sounds kinda strange, but it was very cool, relaxing and different. The Star theater is an old movie theater converted to host different events; the folks working there were very pleasant and the theater was clean and well maintained. I'm glad to see it being used instead of having it gutted and a Starbucks moving in. read more

Where do I start? I am an actor in the community, and out of the numerous companies I have been a part of- this one is the worst by far. They treat their actors terribly and have little respect for ensemble. They preach diversity, yet draw the line when it comes to representing different body types. I've seen the last few youth shows too. The exact same issues- little to no diversity in cast, poor management and set design, and the same 3-5 people being cast in every show. Our granddaughters preschool put on a musical play here in May. From the outside it looks like a classic movie theater from the 50's, and maybe it was! The stadium seating was comfortable and could seat a lot of people. Considering maybe 400 people including kids, the sound was not overwhelming. The stage was of a generous size, curtains and all. The lobby and bathrooms were clean and stocked with necessities. No food allowed, I'm sure that helped. If you need to rent a theater, this would be a great option. We thought Parking was tricky, but we missed seeing a parking structure half a block away. Another thing, it's an easy drive from Fallbrook area, San Marcos, and other far out places. read more

Great little theater...we recent watched our fourth musical play here recently. So far we've watched Peter Pan, Annie, Guys and Dolls, and Little Mermaid. It's a small venue so there really isn't any bad seats. Although I prefer to be in the middle and a few rows behind front row. ;) Parking was easy. We generally park at the city hall and walk over about 50 yards. We did take the Metrolink train to Oceanside to watch a play once. The theater is about a mile from the train depot in case you are thinking about doing this. It's really a great outing for the kids, especially if you couple it with lunch somewhere with an ocean view! Bring some coloring books or an iPad for the train ride. They are a non profit theater. They sell drinks, snacks and raffle off prizes at each show so bring a few dollars and support a good cause. :) read more

The level of absolute incompetence displayed by the staff was unbelievable for the Continuous Signal concert. First, seating was 40 minutes late. Second, nobody had a clue as to where reserved seating ended and GA started. We were moved multiple times despite being told by the staff where we could sit. Not sure I would ever consider returning to this venue unless they completely replace those currently running the event. I've seen more efficient work when staffed by grade schoolers. read more

Saturday 730pm. I had stumbled upon the theater at my first foray into Art Walk in downtown Oceanside (held the first Friday of every month) and had made plans to come back for the next production. As I suspected, the theater was sparse even on a Saturday and I was able to enjoy prime seating in the middle of the row and move at liberty, when my ticket was barely bought at 720pm. The Star Theatre Company is a 440 seat community based theater that showcases a variety of professional and art groups, providing affordable opportunity for such use by the public. Pricing for this particular show*: $18 General admission $12 seniors, military $7 children * Probably doesn't change The theater itself was roomy and appropriately temperature controlled, unlike the fickle weather outside. The lighting, sounds, interior could be modernized and updated a bit, but the homeliness is part of the charm. Parking on the streets or the civic center is free and aplenty. Opportunity tickets to support the theater are available in the lobby for $1 (1 ticket), $5 (8 tickets), $10 (20 tickets) to score prizes like alcohol, gift certificates and other local flavors; drawings are held each night at the end of intermission. Check the website for happenings like an opening production night pre-celebration, or the October 10th and 11th comical production of "A Pair of One Acts" featuring A Few Good Women and benefiting Breast Cancer Research. The particular play I just attended was called "A Few Good Men," and in searching for a phrase that would capture the essence of what I felt I decided "struck dumb" was appropriate, followed closely by "blown away." This play features military men and women facing moral dilemmas, with all sides shown from different points of views, different ranks and different personalities. On top of the brilliant script, the cast did a stunning job with the acting, from the leading role of LT JG Danny Kaffee to the distressed Mrs. Santiago with two minutes of script time, each showcasing enough emotions to bring the tears, the anger, disbelief, and the chuckles. Some scenes were just executed so fantastically the crowd was clapping at scene changes, and I couldn't agree more. I usually take my sweet time in writing reviews, but I was determined after leaving the theater tonight dazed and awestruck that I have to share my review ASAP and recommend others make time in their schedules to treat themselves to A Few Good Men produced by Star Theatre before October 5th. My 4 year old daughter and I just saw Peter Pan last night. Wow! What an amazing performance! We loved every single second of the over 2 hour play. For $26 ($18 adults $8 child) front row seats we will definitely be back! There is a lot of free street parking right in front of the theatre and the side street next to it. The theater is a bit old and could use some paint and new carpet, but that did not take away at all from the amazing cast and delightful show. The staff were all very nice and inviting as well. One post mentioned $1 refreshments...they are now $2 each. For a bottle of water and m&m's it was $4....and that's ok...all the money goes right back into their next performance. We give our experience an A+ and can't wait for Annie coming in December:) read more

To My "Love the Theater" Peeps ... Just saw the best show this weekend at the STAR Theater in Oceanside. Old theater - renovated, mom and pop feel. Inspiring speech at start about how critical it is to support local arts - w/ shout-out to patrons from beyond the texting age ... who get why being literate in the world means reading a book, seeing a musical, extending oneself out into the world where real human beings reach out and communicate face-to-face! OMG was The Addams Family the best show I have seen in years! Anywhere! The choreography is amazing - even acrobatic at times. Full stage dance numbers to intimate tango sequences (gotta love the Morticia and Gomez spice)! The actors get it dead-right on the characters of these odd family members, down to facial expressions, intonation, etc. All the things I loved about the movies and my parents loved about the t.v. show are right here in the mix to enjoy. The script writing - current and modern references with incredible humor! The singing amazing - goosebumps on your arms type of range for the singers! My family and I debated our favorite characters/actors the entire car ride back from the show and ended up without a decided winner because there were too many reasons to love them all! Wow! Wow! Wow! If you can, I'd say go see the show. And if you miss this one, go to the next. The STAR Theater is now on my list of places where I'll be checking the venue each month to see what looks fun for a night out for the family at a ridiculously low cost! There is nothing in the world like community theater and this theater proves that. We have seen both the Spelling B and Godspell and each time we have loved the connection to the audience. Attended the Star Theatre Saturday Night and watched a play by the name of " Fools". I must say I was quite impressed with this production. The quality of acting was excellent and the play was really quite funny. I strongly recommend this show to those looking for a quaint evening full of laughs. My husband and I have attended two musicals at the STAR Theatre and have thoroughly enjoyed each performance. The cast is talented, the music and singers are excellent, and the stories are fun and entertaining. Definitely an excellent value! In addition, the lobby is warm and inviting and the staff is friendly and engaging. All in all, a very nice experience. Tickets for shows don't go on sale until 1hr before the show, unless you buy them online for a fee. 3. Some shows are really inappropriate for kids and I found it hard to gauge without a rating. I can't say enough about the Star. We originally went on a field trip with my daughters school and she was sold within minutes. She has since participated in performances and Star Kids (show choir) The people here are amazing and inspiring. As an audience member you can feel the connection that the cast has with each other and the theater itself. I noticed one review about the "staff" and I would point out that the Star is rented out for events so it is most likely that persons issue was with the people running that particular event not the Star staff. Old, falling apart, poor air circulation. No diaper changing stations. Seats are cramped, missing arm rests, and in some areas, entire seats are missing. At least twice I saw a metal folding chair inserted in the space where a theater seat used to be! "It is best to believe the worst; because the worst is only half bad at best and the best is no worse than expected" That may even make sense to some, but not about "The Curious Savage" at the Star Theatre in Oceanside. I know the "The Curious Savage" well because I delivered that line in the senior class play in high school in 1954 [no, that's not an error]. Last night my wife and I saw an outstanding performance of "The Curious Savage" that got better and better and funnier and funnier by the minute. "The Curious Savage" may also have propelled me into a career as a mental health counselor. As an actor [high school level] in this play I learned an underlying lesson about mental health. If you are reading this on February 11, 2012, before 7:30 p.m. call the theater to reserve tickets immediately for the final performance and find out what that lesson is about. AND, as senior citizens we paid only $12.00 apiece. If it is too late, call to find out about the next production--it's a talented group of actors. read more

I purchased tickets for my girlfriend and I to see the production of South Pacific the other day. Based on the other yelp reviews, we were expecting a high quality performance. Instead, we felt like we were watching a high school play. For me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of watching a play or a movie is when you can lose yourself in it and become completely immersed, forgetting that you are watching something and instead just experiencing it. There were no such moments at this show--the timing of the jokes and dialogue was often off and there were numerous times when several seconds of silence passed by after someone's line. It wouldn't be fair to say that these occurrences took us as viewers out of the moment, because the performance never created that immersive "moment" to begin with. I debated for a couple of days before posting this review because it felt mean. But reflecting on how misled we felt from reading all the other positive reviews, I decided it was important to express the very different experience we had from previous yelpers. Maybe it was just one bad show, or maybe our expectations were just too high, but it was a disappointing enough experience that I felt compelled to write about it. read more

The Women In Black was the play featuring this past weekend. I have very mixed feelings about my experience. The play itself was ok. However, I probably would have enjoyed it more if it weren't for the dust mites attacking me. I was not the only one itching up a storm. I don't know if it's an Oceanside thing, but on more than one occasion have I come up against this problem. One word for these business...Vacuum. For $10.... yes $10 for live theater??!!!.... we thoroughly enjoyed A VERY WICKED REVUE! The voices were amazing, as good as anything I've paid $75-150 to see at the Civic or other venues. What a jewel this theatre is.... I also was lucky enough to see Thoroughly Modern Millie a few months back, again....just like seeing it professionally done but for $15 instead of $100!!! Not a bad seat in the house, clean, good A/C on a hot day, reasonable concessions.... Feels like I'm supporting something that needs supporting..... not paying some already rich overpaid entertainer.... I just wish it was in Carlsbad/Encinitas.... not a lot of dining opportunities in Oceanside on the 101.... read more
