Hello most gigantic Starbucks ever! Wow. Generally I would not review you because you are a chain, but man you kind of won me over, albeit with much reluctance. First, you are open 24 hours a day for the caffeine junkie that can't make it through the night without a cup of joe and also has no inclination to make coffee at home. Thank you for that. Secondly, you are giant! And since you are so big you need lots of workers. And for some reason most of these workers are totally cute boys! Bravo, Starbucks on North and Wells. Finally, I love your cheese plate meal thing. What is that even called? I don't know, but I do know that it had 4 different cheeses, grapes, apple slices and bread. It was a delicious snack. This 24hr Starbucks is great for a late night pick-me-up or a quick boost after a workout at the nearby XSport. The coffee is made better than many other Starbucks and their hot sandwiches aren't too bad either (stay away from the reduced fat one though... it tastes like... well there is no taste). This place can turn into a meat market so ladies be advised to come here only when among friends. ^_^ !! - Bonus points for the free entertainment provided by some of the more *ahem* colorful visitors of this establishment. The other night some guy in hot pink spandex shorts and sneakers (nothing else) obviously drunk off his ass or high out of his mind (maybe both?) dropped by for a visit. I was lucky to be in a far corner to enjoy the show as this character walked around freaking out the various patrons. This soon eventually turned into an episode of (and queue the Inner Circle music track) COPS - LIVE as a couple of the usually continuous stream of police officers that also come here escort this guy out... and eventually into a paddy wagon. I walk into Starbuck's every morning hoping for what every other single person on location is wanting...coffee...NO! A missed Connection. I roll in to Starbucks on North and Wells for one reason, to see what someone has to say about how cute I look on Craigslist.org. So it hasn't worked yet, but one day, some Trixie, rocking Uggs and a Pink poncho, maybe some Gaucho Pants, and some Gucci Sunglasses. With her BMW parked illegally out front, she will "Flip out" if she gets a ticket. I order my Orange Mocha Frappuccino in hopes of being spotted and missing my connection only to find out about it that afternoon when one of my friends sees it and emails it to me. (Even though I have been checking it all day every 10 minutes, waiting, hoping to "connect.") I wear a nice suit in there every morning, hoping to stand out, even though I have been unemployed for 6 months. I tried wearing a tuxedo t-shirt one morning, and I received a missed connection, but it was with an indie chick who was "misunderstood" and she was just as broke as I am... As far as service, they are grumpy baristas, who loathe the very existence of the yuppie Chads and Trixie's that they serve this Columbian crack like liquid to every morning, but they at least fake a smile, or perhaps they are mocking us internally as they slang coffee like rock. But at least it's tasty! The fact that I get to see cute girls and pet the homeless guys dog every morning, instead of go to work like all of you makes it an OK Place for me! PS - I don't really drink coffee. But I have been known to peruse the MC's when I am bored. read more

Had a double espresso and I know they rushed my drink. On one hand, there was a large line but on the other, it's an espresso and you're a Barista not an automatic espresso maker. It's service like that which makes people not like their Starbucks experience. However, the place is open 24 hours but it was packed when we got there at 10:30 on a Saturday night. The trick is to ask those around you for a chair or two to put together in the ample space. The missing star is for the tall skinny guy who constantly looks like I'm annoying him when I order my coffee. I get it that you'd rather be somewhere else, but it's not my damn fault, now is it? That said, I adore everyone else at this location. They remember me, they are always quick, and one of the women behind the counter even remembered to bring me a sample of the new coffeecake when they got it in. The North & Wells Starbucks is by far the best one in Chicago, which explains why it is ALWAYS busy. It is open 24 hours and you can guarantee it is packed (even at 2 am on a Saturday night). I enjoy catching up on my work or reading here on the weekends (if I can get a seat), but it is very comfortable and the extremely attractive crowd makes for some fun people watching. Even though it's busy the line tends to move pretty fast so it only takes a few minutes to get my daily morning latte! read more

If Chicago had a Grand Central Station, it would be this spot... I don't know, I guess it's great that this Starbucks is open 24 hours. I guess it's cool that some folks LIVE here and should basically be paying rent....not to mention a monthly charge for internet....because they too are here 24 hours a day. It's always crowded here, always. Even though the store is huge, with ample seating, you'll never be able to get a seat. And the baristas don't seem too happy (perhaps they are working 24 hour shifts!?!?) so in consequence the drinks aren't prepared well. I'm unsure how to make this location better, but until there is another Starbucks in Old Town I will appreciate that I can have my tall extra hot soy steamer at 4am! read more

Just got back from a walk and had stopped in for a drink. Love the fact this place is open 24 hours, love the Chai Tea, and has been my go to spot when I can't sleep for the year I've lived in the city. So why only 3 stars? I'm nocturnal when I have a choice, and this place is open 24 hours. Trust me, there are very few places that I can go to, plug in my laptop at 11pm and starting working on whatever paper I've procrastinated on. The staff here has always been super nice to me, quick service, polite about when they shut down half of the store to clean at night. I usually don't mind, since it's usually when you can tell the true insomniacs and homeless from the dabblers, as the place will weed out a bit, except of course around finals time. I've never had a problem with the drinks/food I've ordered, bathrooms have been clean every time I've gone. The only real complaint I have about this Starbucks is the random dudes that'll try to chat and try to pick me up when I'm clearly working on a paper at 1:30am. Seriously?? Do you think I have 15 cases and a citation manual in front of me in the middle of the night so you can try to hit on me? The homeless dudes are more polite. Oh, and they'll use awful tactics, like looking at my rough draft and saying "it has promise" when they have no knowledge of the topic, or, regaling me with how the water was shut off and he didn't know until he was dropping a deuce and now his apartment has toxic fumes. I wish I was making that up. At times I wish they wi-fi was free, but it does help me focus on the paper in front of me instead of facebook. I don't think I've gone here before 10pm, so no clue what the daytime crowd is like. read more

This place is silly. I wish somebody would open some non-corporate place to compete for all that late night business. Someplace comfortable and quiet with big comfy chairs and employees who are fresh and don't hate all the customers yet. I'd be there every night, all night. That's a promise, because this Starbucks has a terrible vibe. The night staff are all misanthropes. Not their fault, really; they've just had to deal with too many bums and weirdos. They'll process your order joylessly and herd you from one section to another like cattle ranchers with mops for prods. They shout: "Alright folks its 11:30 and we're closing this side down for cleaning...". Often times there are no seats available on whatever side they're trying to move you to and although they insert the time, to lend the announcement some degree of authority I guess, "cleaning time" is completely arbitrary. I used to go there every night but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. The devil tempts with shiny treats like 24 hour locations but, let's be honest, when CORPORATION stole our real coffee pubs they really cut into us and cut us deep. Here's how this place makes me feel: Abstracted. a number having been sufficiently processed, fined and caffeinated, I am plugged into a network of numbers. Being arbitrarily shuffled from one side of the establishment to the other, I am trying desperately to process some numbers of personal significance before my freshness date expires, I am booted from the network and ejected into the ether. Black toothed old man Bucks with his cigarette sandpaper voice, dirty old top hat and case of stolen watches growls: "One ticket, one ride; nothin' personal, kid." You would think that for such a large establishment, they'd have their act together. I ordered a turkey bacon breakfast sandwich this morning and the bacon was practically raw. There was a scent to it that made the already inedible sandwich barely tolerable. Typically this breakfast sandwich does the trick, but this morning's attempt will keep me away from Starbuck's breakfast for a while. As for my coffee, I have no complaints; I tend to keep it simple which I'm sure helps. The only advice I could give to the barista is, when you say "crap" several times while making a drink, it creates a sense of fear in the person drinking the "oh crap" beverage... read more

This has to be the busiest Starbucks I'd ever been to. It's in a good location, but its crazy busy and the service is either grumpy and/or slow. It seemed like the staff was confused and kept changing up positions. And it was one of those moments where everyone was getting their drink before me. Of all Starbucks, this has got to be the worse customer service. A few times here and there to mess up is fine (we're all human), but the girls here have a NASTY attitude. On more than one account, I have felt discriminated against, (a couple of other customers that I talked to have felt the same), or maybe their lives are so miserable. So upset at Starbucks. The internet is free for a month if you load $5 or more on a starbucks gift card that you register online. It's friggin' awesome. Yeah it's a corporation and blah blah blah, but it's a corporation that's providing a public studying space with ample seating and free internet at any hour of the day. Corporations can do that, charming indie coffeehouses can't. I have to owe my physics degree to this place. 4 am and studying for a quantum exam didn't happen in my house, that's for sure. read more

BUG ALERT!!! Today I went and ordered 3 drinks and went to the side to pick up my coffee. As I was waiting I noticed a bug crawling on the counter, it just so happens that it was a ROACH! Always pleasant and very friendly staff and a great atmosphere. If you're in the area and looking for a place to kill time, read, get coffee (obviously), relax, use wi-fi and enjoy a great area with lots of good looking people, this Starbucks is a little different. This very wide room is welcoming, with a great ambiance for studying. I also, just learned while writing this, that the countertops used here are made from fallen trees in Chicago and stained with Starbucks coffee. Something abut this Sbux is different from others. It's also a great place to spot Second City stars and staff alike! read more

Best starbucks in Chicago! Love the comfy chairs near the fireplace. Great place for studying since this location has free wi-fi and stays open all night. Tons of seating options: small tables, comfy chairs, big tables to spread out. Lots of natural light from huge south facing windows. Negative - lots of noise and traffic on the weekends so can be a hard place to read or study or have a quiet conversation. LOTS of bum traffic can be distracting. read more

I have to give a shout out to the 24-hour Starbucks because they took me in in a time of need:) I took the Bar exam last summer, and the last three weeks prior to the test, I pretty much moved into the Starbucks. Yes, I was one of those assholes who claimed a seat for hours on end and left my books behind to save my spot when I went to lunch, but to be fair, it wasn't a comfortable seat...and it was the Bar so I gave myself a free pass to be annoying. The employees were extremely nice, kept mixing new creative drinks and passing around samples (mocha strawberry frappucino, for example), and basically kept us all sufficiently caffeinated and (relatively) sane. Minus a star for the expensive internet, but I know that's just a Starbucks thing. read more

I have never been a fan of the coffeehouse scene, as I always perceived it as a sapho environment. I must say, that with the onslaught of Starbucks on the Windy City and beyond, I am pleasantly surprised by the immense popularity of this subculture. Gym bunnies, book worms, MBA's, struggling students, groupies, neighbors and theater-goers, make for an interesting mix of eye candy. One of my favorite Starbucks in Chicago. This Starbucks open 24/7, great capacity (inside and outside), the coffee's actually better than any other ones, excellent music selection, and love the warm feeling this place provided. Sometimes when me and my friends want to find a place just to chill at 3am in the morning, this place is our 1st choice. The reason why I give this Starbucks 4 stars is because it is really hard to find parking around this area. First star - For it being open 24 hours a day. Second star - For it being in Old Town at North and Wells. The staff is nice and the place is quite large. Third star - For being my go-to study place. It does get quick packed at times but usually I get there right before the rush. Fourth star - The Spinach and Feta Cheese Egg White Wrap. I can't believe I just discovered this awesome awesome wrap. It doesn't need ketchup or salsa, the flavors are already quite tasty without any additional condiment. I'm going to have a lot more of these in the future. I do not think it deserves a fifth star because it's Starbucks! You can find better coffee elsewhere. read more

Eh. I'm torn on this Starbucks. I only feel this conflicted when deciding what pumps to wear in the morning. And believe you me, that's conflict to the umpteenth degree! They're open 24 hours - plus points. Their bathroom smells worse than that of a nursing home - minus. (Seriously. I don't think it's been cleaned in weeks. That, or one of the area salons dumps its bikini wax remnants here.) Free wi-fi and plenty of seating - plus. Slo-o-o-o-o-ow service, even for iced teas - minus. (Though this seems to be a result of under-staffing.) Super friendly staff - plus. Lack of area parking - minus. Easily accessible location - plus. Do you see why I'm so torn?
