I was in the area visiting family and wanted to grab some coffee before the road trip home to South Florida. A local business is better than a Starbucks. Bonus is it's my favorite bakery in Orlando so I'm here for it. This Light on the Sugar is located next to the Regal Cinemas in Waterford Lakes. Squished between Charley's Philly Cheesesteaks and Zen Dumplings. What I dislike about this location is the wooden gazebo they built directly in front of these stores. It totally hides the name of the stores and it's not appealing. This made it hard to find too. They should honestly get rid of the gazebos, these poor stores may be losing potential business because people can't locate it. This bakery is the smallest one compared to the original two locations I've been to. It's ok because they still sell most of the same items, just less of a selection due to limited space. They offer the popular cream puffs, pastries, tarts, merch and drinks. On this particular day, I only got the Pistachio Latte and an Americano. My husband likes a good simple coffee with no bells and whistles. The other stuff is too much for him. Ha. I really debated getting pastries for the road but I was just at the Winter Park location yesterday and got an assortment so I was good on pastries. My Pistachio Latte was good, but it was a tad on the sweet sweeter side. I had my husband mix some of his Americano with my latte so it balanced out a little bit more for both of us. We tried the red potion and the carrot cake latte. The latte was the star of the drinks with cream cheese foam and the perfect cinnamon and spice flavor. Creamy texture with little crunch from the candied walnuts. Their guava cheese croissant was incredible too. Lots of spots to chill, we noticed a lot of students studying so it's fairly quiet inside. The ambiance here is very comfortable and really adds to the overall experience. I would definitely recommend this particular coffee shop and in particular, their pistachio latte. But they're not really like any empanada I've had before. Granted I feel like I've only ever really had Cuban empanadas, so that makes sense. And while I like the flaky breadiness of those, I really enjoyed these too! The outside gave more of a crispy cornbread vibe which was delicious. I thought I would like the beef empanada the most, but I ended up liking the Hawaiian one more. I love the sweetness of the pineapple, and it was just a lot moister than the other meats. But really, everything was so good. The pandebonos, buñuelo, tequeños - all delicious. But I do wish they were served a little hotter. They do stay warm behind the counter, but I think it would have been even better if they were heated up again before being served.
