Road to Hana is a unique experience that involves driving down a long road (most likely from the…read morenorth side of Maui) down to the town of Hana. Along the way there are a variety of attractions like lush rainforests, waterfalls, hiking areas, and beaches. There are many so you'll have to do your research to find the ones you want to stop at. You will usually drive down the road, stop briefly for the attractions, then get back on the road to the next one. There were many windy and narrow roads and the driving isn't for the faint of heart. Some of the bridges are one lane so you'll have to constantly keep an eye out for cars around corners. I personally wouldn't drive at night and you really have to ensure you don't veer onto the other lane. Driving at slow speeds is a must and requires a lot of concentration. One of the other notable attractions that the road has to offer are the plentiful banana bread shops. We went to Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread which was delicious. It was pretty cool and I'm glad I got to check it out but I wouldn't do it again.

The answer was Yes, one can change into swimsuits during lunch before the black sand beach visit and then change out of them at a stop after the waterfall stop to be dry for the ride back to the hotels. A few days before our tour I received an email confirmation that included other useful information, such as bring along swimwear, towels, water shoes and a light jacket for the air conditioned van. I had not considered the A/C and I'm always cold, so that is a very welcome heads-up. On the day of our tour we received texts that the driver was on his way. Pretty close to the scheduled meeting time the van pulled up to our resort. The van was spacious with huge windows. Our tour was full with all 12 passenger seats occupied. Our driver/guide was Travis. He was born and raised in Hana and was a wealth of knowledge about Hana, Maui, and Hawaii. He seemed to be related to all the locals he passed on the road. There was not dull moment. Among the stops along the way were Maui Tropical Plantation for breakfast, Auntie Sandy's Banana Bread stand for those that wished to purchase, Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach, also with a lava tube and a blow hole), Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park (usually calm enough to swim but the falls were roaring due to rain earlier in the day), and Ho'okipa Beach with turtles on the beach. Travis was an excellent driver and guide. We got great value from the cost of the excursion. One minor thing did bother us. We are Jewish and were uncomfortable during the praising Jesus sing-along. Regardless, we recommend this tour and especially Travis as a guide.

We had a plenty of time to float and observe the fish. Lunch was delish and they prepared some tasty gluten free noodles JUST for me. On the way back, one of our daughters helped hoist the sail and we were able to catch the wind of a bit. My wife, Kari, broke her foot 2 days ago so we modified our excursions and eliminated hiking to attractions. Kellen quickly came up with some alternatives and explained/described them perfectly. Kellen's knowledge of the area, the plants, the trees, and the sights were full of insight and knowledge that only a local would have! We throughly enjoyed it. His driving was superb, professional, and cautious (complete with short horn honks on the countless 1 lane blind turns). We enjoyed the small independent farms, stands, and choices for lunch too. As a side note, Kellen's personal relationship with those owners opened the door to Kari being able to use a non-public restroom. There was no one else on the tour except one couple, whom we had no issues with. The 7 people on the bus was my family of 5 and one couple. 1. There was a hiccup in your booking system, you allowed us to book a tour because you did not close your online reservation window. If you were sold out why did the website allow us to make a reservation? Hence the "hiccup". After we booked the tour, we did move a flight around so this person could make the tour that we had a confirmation email for. Very unprofessional to email the next morning saying you were sold out AFTER we made the booking. Yes we did book late but if you were sold out you shouldn't have allowed us to make the booking plain and simple. We called multiple times because we were asking about pick up arrangements and were told to keep calling back to see when/if the tour filled up, because only then would they be able to tell us what pick up rotation we would be in. I wanted to know what hotel would be the first pick up, etc. I didn't care that our two parties were not on the same bus, which was why I didn't mention it in the booking. 2. Since you claim to have the proof that he wasnt speeding, why dont you show it? It absolutely does corroborate with the Google maps picture. I did move the camera to get a video of how bumpy the bus was DUE TO HOW FAST THE DRIVER WAS SPEEDING! I asked for a Spanish translator due to the fact only ONE person in our party spoke Spanish. He even mentioned how the rangers loved him and when HE chose to make the illegal stop in front of the waterfalls, the ranger allowed it bc they told him make it quick. And "If you could let me know.." at 7:56pm. For my safety, I should NEVER have received text asking about a TIP! Even if he was wondering about the tip because he wasn't used to electronics, you still should never text someones personal cell phone number. We skipped the pricey farm tour (we did coffee farm tours last year and are farmed out) and went straight to the chocolate café. They will give you a five piece tasting for free, either a dark, milk, or sugar-free flight. But why would you come here and just take... When you can also give back to folks in Lahaina rebuilding? So we got two free flights, one milk and one dark. My sweetie added on a drink, a pastry, and some very tasty chocolate and salted caramel gelato. I went with a make your own alcohol pairing, which was so much fun and very reasonable. For about $17, I got a shot of coconut rum with two chocolate pairings and a shot of premium Martiniquan JM volcanic rhum Agricole with another two chocolate pairings. And then I still had my free five pieces. What an amazing taste adventure, for cheaper than the price of a cocktail at a hotel bar or even a locally owned foodie place? I don't want to mess up your tasting - so you pick your favorites! But I normally don't like rhum agricole - and the pairings were such an amazing flavor adventure. Honestly, this is my number one recommendation in West Maui. Give the folks some business and have an amazing time! Oh, and they have jazz on Sunday nights' but I'm sure it's more crowded than than popping in during the day on a weekday. And also: the second floor tasting room has panoramic views of the ocean and around Lahaina. Check them out!

It starts at their building in Lahaina, which has a little café/coffee shop, plenty of chocolate for sale, and a rooftop experience that looked interesting but we didn't get to try. By the time we finished the tour, the kids had reached the "we have successfully experienced enough things today" portion of the vacation. Fair enough. From there, you take a fun little ride out to the cacao farm, and that's where this became much more than "let's go eat some chocolate." Our guide, Andrew (I'm about 95% sure I'm remembering his name correctly!), was fantastic. He seemed genuinely interested in cacao, the process, the company, and what they are doing there. That makes such a difference. He talked about how cacao is grown and processed, the history behind Kuʻia, and a little about founder Dr. Gunars Valkirs and his rather fascinating path to chocolate. Then, of course, there was the tasting. Lots and lots of little squares of chocolate. This is educational work I was willing to undertake. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which particular varieties were my favorites because apparently I was too busy eating them to take adequate scientific notes. What I can tell you is that there really wasn't one I disliked. What surprised me most was how much flavor there could be in chocolate that wasn't buried under a mountain of sugar. The differences and complexity of the cacao actually came through, and it made me think about chocolate completely differently. The chocolate sample they gave us back at the counter was also fantastic, as was the coffee drink we ordered. My only regret is that we didn't buy more chocolate before leaving. Be warned, though: apparently this tour has side effects. I went in expecting a fun Maui family activity where we'd learn a few things and eat some chocolate. I left wondering about cacao varieties, fermentation, processing, climate, chemistry and several other questions that absolutely nobody in my family asked me to investigate. It's been a few weeks and I'm still going down the rabbit hole. Five stars.
