If you're looking for an encouraging community of people passionate about getting stronger this is the place to be. Weightlifting or barbell training can seem overwhelming and intimidating at first, but the starting strength coaches and members make everyone feel welcomed no matter their experience, age, physical ability, weight, etc. They are focused on getting you stronger no matter where you are starting, or the pace it takes you to get where you want to be. They focus heavily on proper form, technique and gradual increases in weight, which is critical to prevent injury and increase your strength. This is a plan you can stick with! I'm not the type of person you picture when you think of weightlifting, but the term 'starting strength' got me to walk in and inquire. I'm so happy I did! The workout is inddividualized and you WILL see results! This is a program that will build you up in more ways than you can imagine. The coaches are very friendly and knowledgeable. Coach Luke has been my coach for some time now, before she opened her own place, Luke's Barbell Club. She's the only coach I've had (and I've had a handful over the years) that actually analyzes a person's physique utilizing her certifications and extensive experience to develop a program for her clients/athletes that allow them to make real life changes. She does offer private sessions, but I attend the classes. They provide a great environment that is welcoming, positive, motivating and supportive. Coach Luke works with everyone (all ages) on a personal level to ensure personal goals of strength and fitness are achieved and that evolve as personal goals evolve. Some folks look to get off medications to improve their own healthy lives, some look to support sporting activities in their personal lives, some are there for rehab, some compete in weightlifting competitions and some are just there to maintain their well being. It may sound daunting to many, but in essence, Coach Luke gets back to the basics of building strength with no frills to train smart. I feel bad that five stars is the most I can give. Luke's Barbell Club is, hands down, the most phenomenal gym I have ever had the privilege of attending. I came to Joyce a little over six months ago. Since then, the strides I have made in my health and fitness are incredible. What's even more astounding is she doesn't get these results by making you run laps or work you until you are so tired and sore you can't move. She believes in leaving "some in the tank" so you can heal, rest, and actually want to come back. She is concerned about how you are doing as a whole - are you sick? Stressed at work? Not getting enough sleep? Not eating right? Joyce then tailors your workout to fit your individual goals and for how your body is doing in that moment. It's not "everybody squats today!". Instead she may have one person squatting, another working on kettlebell exercises, and somebody else just stretching.This individual-specific programming ensures that everybody is making progress in the ways that best fit them. Since I joined Luke's Barbell Club in February I have "only" lost 10 lbs. Not a whole lot, but my physique has definitely changed. Even more importantly, my health has improved as a whole. My resting heart rate has gone down by nearly 20 beats per minute and my squatting weight has gotten more than 50 lbs. heavier. I am also continually impressed at the small changes that keep occurring in my everyday life, even if it's as simple as sleeping sounder, walking up a set of stairs easier or carrying all of the groceries in at once. This is not your typical "meathead" gym. Everybody is incredibly kind and supportive, and I look forward to going to the gym after a hard day at work to discuss the latest news and politics while lifting and getting healthier with some wonderful people. This gym is definitely a community - try being gone for two weeks. You will get bombarded with messages asking when you will be coming back! Do yourself and your body a favor, and just give Luke's Barbell Club a try. Regardless of where you are in life - a college student trying to keep off the "Freshman 15", an 80 year old doing physical therapy, a marathon runner, whatever - it doesn't matter. I've been lifting at Luke's Barbell Club since July 2016 in group training. I was lifting at my apartment gym for a year prior to trying out Luke's. I wasn't sure about my form and wanted to get it checked out before I pushed myself harder. Joyce tailors each person's programming according to their goals, how they feel that day, whether they are well rested/sore and their form according to their physique. I've had sessions where I've done nothing more than roll out tired muscles. Initially, I was more inclined towards private coaching over group training until I actually tried group training. I'm so glad I did! This is hands down the most supportive atmosphere and diverse group of lifters I've run into. I love working out with those in their 70s, 20s, etc. at varying strength levels, those twice as big as me, or half my size (okay, so the last one hasn't happened yet!) who are all equally supportive and encouraging. It is so refreshing to work out in a co-ed gym with people who have been lifting much longer and heavier - and have them cheer you on! It's a welcome change from some other gyms where I have to seek out a quiet time to work out, for fear of some guy offering me unsolicited advice on how to lift properly, tell me I shouldn't be lifting because I'll look "manly" and other obnoxious crap. More than anything else, I love this about the gym - I'm much more confident in my form/lifting and that gym confidence has transitioned into other aspects of life. I love working out here. The coaches are present for my whole workout, highly encouraging, and eager to coach me through every one of my work sets. The coaches are knowledgeable and insightful when I have questions, and I feel like I've made more progress here than I have at any other gym.
