We've been rather disappointed in the service at the Surprise location as of late and we were hesitant to come by but I am glad we did Granted it is late and we are the only people here on a Sunday night but the service is super attentive. I've been here for lunch quite often, and they have a great lunch menu. That, paired with the beers on tap make for a great Friday afternoon. I've indulged in their salads and sandwiches. My favorite is their chicken salad sandwich. read more

Robert the bartender was one of the most attentive bartenders Ive experienced in Phoenix. It was a busy Saturday night and he acknowledged my fiancé and I sitting at the bar and promptly attended to us. Beer was great- he recommended a hazy IPA. Food was "some of the best bar food I've had" according to my fiancé. We had the carne asade fries- so delicious and a big portion we could have easily shared. I enjoyed this place a lot. Although I didn't get to try the food, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the interior designs and finishes. Definitely a good meet up and hang out spot for friends. They even have games towards the back that people can play. I ordered a well drink and it was cleanly made at a reasonable price. The bartender was very knowledgeable and even shared with me the vegan options and what could be made vegan as well. The drinks were good, the food was okay but the service was poor. To preface, it was a busy Friday night during 'the great resignation'. We walk in and the place is busy at 6pm on a Friday so it's understandably busy. We wait ten minutes for a table which is totally fine and understandable. We then wait another ten minutes to even get menus after being seated, again busy and understaffed, understandable I suppose. Then another five or so minuted before our server asked if we want water. Ten minutes and we get water and drink orders in and food orders since the server is busy and we're ready. We then proceeded to wait until 7:50pm, that is almost an hour and a half to get our meal. Other larger groups came and went, and someone who ordered the same meal as me, seated 30 minutes after us (when we put our order in) received their food well before us. Up until I saw someone else get the same order as me being sat long after us, I thought it was just staff shortages. After seeing that it was obviously human error and not just shortage of staff. When I asked the server what happened she said she had no idea what was taking it so long. I understand that working a customer service job is difficult especially understaffed, however lack of ownership is upsetting. When talking to the manager it was the same scenario. We ended up sitting for almost two hours and still had to take the food and put it in our car because we had a show to attend. I was given high reviews of this place from regulars to the restaurant but for $50 worth of food (and $25 worth of drinks that were removed from the bill due to inconvenience) it honestly was quality not worth the hassle but may have been if I had it hot in the restaurant. Overall, I think the experience was out of the ordinary because this place has high reviews and a personal recommendation but on a busy Friday night you might want to pick someplace else, or only come here for drinks. read more

Went last night the first time before a concert at The Van Buren. The place was packed. After waiting about 10 minutes at the hostess station (which no one ever came over), finally found a spot at the bar. The bar was cleared off with the previous customers dishes but it was never wiped down. There were two women bartenders and my friend and I were ignored for another 10 minutes until someone finally came over. Ordered two drinks, two waters, the Disco Fries and the Hot Chicken Sandwich. Got the two drinks but never got the waters. Had to ask someone else to bring the water a second time. Finally got our food which did come out pretty quickly considering the place was a madhouse. We decided to check out State 48 for a celebratory dinner. We headed downtown and parking was super easy! (The lot right next door) for a Friday night they weren't super busy so we were seated immediately. The front door was a little confusing to find with the sign being on the corner, it's easy to walk right past it! The decor is super cool and gives off an awesome hipster vibe. We decided to sit on the side patio, it was a gorgeous night for it. They opened the windows so we didn't feel completely separated. Big 10 points for the menu! Usually breweries don't have a large food menu. State 48 had a great selection of burgers, apps, pastas and other entrees. I decided on a beer flight ( although it's not advertised as such) the menu offers little 3.5 ounce beers that they do serve as flights! The select was great and I loved the cherry sour I chose! I do not eat meat so being able to sub the burgers for beyond meat was great! The fries are BEER BATTERED and absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back soon! read more

I had heard about this place from friends, but didn't expect to go, as it's downtown. I don't travel much into downtown. However, for a concert we were attending, it was a good place to try. It was kind of quiet for a Saturday evening but had a nice vibe overall. Our server was funny and suggested a couple good beers. I was utterly amazed that the giant bowl of fried pickles that we ordered. The batter is completely delicious but paired with house made ranch it's like a taste explosion in my mouth. Ive been here several times now and have enjoyed each visit. Solid food and lots of excellent beers. The tots are a great change from fries. My only my complaint is they don't seem to wipe down the bar after people leave. We had to change seats due to a large blob of "bbq sauce?" And then the next spot had some type of goo but I could slide over enough to not be affected. These spots weren't cleaned while we sat (2:00). You would think she would bring water since we had waited so long - but NO. We had to ask for it. At that point, I was ready to leave but my friends talked me into staying. Then we waited again to place our order. Honestly, I'm​ so irritated​ at the lack of service that I was ready to go punch in our order myself. She was the WORST waitress that I have ever had. NO refills without asking, NO box for leftovers without asking, DIDNT clean off the apps or plates to make room for the main course - our table was so crowded that it was uncomfortable to eat. Came here this evening with a good friend, and had been here before and it was pretty good. Not tonight! Order a burger, and then a caesar salad with grilled chicken. The burger was warm, and super greasy the lettuce was swimming. The salad was rusty, the waiter came over and said he would yell at the kitchen staff for it and left. Then he came back with a bowl... We assumed to put the rusty lettuce in? About 15 mins later he finally comes back and asks if we want the kitchen to try again. Hostess was really snotty, when we arrived she asked how many, we replied 2. She asked if we wanted the table by the door or a high top, we opted for the high top. When we got to what they were calling a high top it was more like a bar than a table. I went to the host stand and asked for a proper table, she was really short and animated but moved us to a table in the end. Our waitress was really kind and quick although maybe a little newer and not real knowledgeable about the menu. The food was excellent! Although the menu description was confusing. I ordered what was listed as a wedge salad with chicken. When the salad came it was green leaf and not iceberg like I expected. The blue cheese was not too strong and creamy, the ranch was made with dill, the chicken was juicy and flavorful, the flavors blended really well together. My husband ordered the the royale with cheese (burger) and had no complaints. The beer battered fries were good enough that I wanted to order more and would have if I hadn't been so full. We also ordered several beers off their list of beers made in house. I ordered a cherry sour, which was more sour than it was cherry flavored but on par with other cherry sours I've had. My husband ordered a kolsch which was a smooth drink with a slight kick of hops at the finish. Got my follow up drink I ordered the orange cream ale which was spot on but finished with a medicinal taste, I certainly didn't want to drink the whole pint. The hefeweizen was citrusy and refreshing by far the best beer we had and went down very easily. I'd say that I'd go back for the food for sure! Overall this was a pleasant experience. read more

One of the worst establishments I've ever walked into depending on what time of day you walk into this particular restaurant you could walk into a really dark gloomy atmosphere or a nighttime life atmosphere where things are kind of grooving it comes to the workers they are great but the owners of the company I wouldn't speak so highly of nor am I going to publicly disrespect but I will say this they could run their establishment a lot better and it would add stars and more positive reviews more customers more business in general if they had a more positive outlook and were more about the enjoyment and customer service versus being about the money This is only one of 14 businesses that they own it's better when you do something you love it's not a job it's a hobby that you're paid to do to me or just seems like these folks are just about the money and that's all read more

This place is legit! I was trying to decide where to go for lunch so I hopped on yelp and searched "burgers", lo and behold State48 popped up. I had completely forgotten that they had opened up a downtown location! Their location is perfect by the way - right between Crescent Ballroom and the Van Buren so I'm sure this place gets packed on show nights. I ordered the beer cheese burger and my brother got the fried chicken sandwich and we split the sausage platter to start. It was WAY too much food for the both of us but it was all delicious. They also have a great drink menu, lunch specials, and happy hour. The only reason this place isn't 5 stars is because the service was a little slow and their food is on the pricier side ($55 for a burger, a sandwich, and the sausage app) - I would prefer smaller portions for lower prices. All in all, we will definitely be back! read more
