We've driven by a million times and finally decided to stop in for lunch. It's open 24 hours and there's a parking lot out front and seating at tables and at a long counter. Spacing is a bit tight as it's a small footprint. Not sure how a wheelchair or similar would navigate, but I assume they know how to make it work. The stars are mainly for the staff and service which was great. We had steak and egger breakfast with pancakes and a steak dinner. The food was just okay. Pancakes were a bit dense and the steak was a bit more well done than we asked for (medium). The veggie on the dinner platter was canned green beans, but you do get lots of food. Everything is decently priced. Note there's a sign at the register that essentially says 4% surcharge for credit cards and if you order after 10pm they make you pay first - probably a lot of dine and dash people late at night. We don't need to go again, but I appreciate what they offer and maybe when I have a hankering for inexpensive comfort/diner/cafeteria foods, I might try again. read more

I was on the hunt for a brunch-type steak dinner but was unable to locate on within the area. This place showed up and my husband I decided to give it a try. The location was an easy to find spot. The place looks like it used to be an old Waffle House style layout. The restaurant had its own parking. The inside was clean but gave an old restaurant feel and could use a slight update to bring it to current day old cafe style. The dining space was very small so to be 8 months pregnant I had to eat sideways. None of the tables moved and the place is a tight. So if you are a larger framed person or pregnant like myself - you won't eat comfortably at all. The food was hot and fresh to order. I played it safe and ordered pancakes with 2 eggs and Turkey sausage patties. They won me over with having more than pork as an option. Th food tasted as if it were prepared at home very good on seasoning and flavors. The staff were very kind although many hardly spoke much English which made the entire experience of communication a little hectic. They charge an 18% gratuity for 4 or more people which is a bit much. You don't have to force tips if service is good and their customer service was very nice despite the communication barrier. I think it was maybe 11:00 pm when the munchies hit and me and my friend took a short walk to this lil gem. I know everyone has mixed opinions about neighborhood diners. However, do you know how cool it is to have a 24/7 diner that's a 5 minute walk from your front door? I legitimately said I wasn't super hungry and proceeded to order a club blt (untoasted.) Our server," Chunky" was very sweet and super helpful with little tweaks and tips to make sure you got exactly what you wanted. She had the best energy and we even hugged when I left! Super chill vibes from her! My friend ordered the chili cheese purger with seasoned fries and it's your typical quarter pound burger topped with chili, cheese with onions . It comes on a toasted bun and he had seasoned fries and a side of bbq. As mentioned I ordered the blt club and that was bacon, mayo, lettuce and tomato's on white toasted bread. I had a side of regular fries. Everything came out super hot and so fresh. Those fries were so perfect! Crispy on the outside with the most decadent soft inside . So so so good! It was clean plate club for me ! No leftovers lol! If you're up late, early or you just need a quick meal, go give them a shout! Tldr: get an itemized receipt! The food was alright, typical cheap diner food. My review is for the cashier. We got up to check out at the register and the cashier input our stuff without going over what we got and said the total for us was $160. I was shocked because that def didn't sound right because there was only 4 of us, but I was tipsy and just figured that maybe the included gratuity was high. I swiped my card and my friends were like hold on, that doesn't sound right. The cashier starts rattling off what we had and we all said yeah that's what we ordered, but that total is not right. She prints the itemized receipt (attached) after swiping my card and it shows we ordered 10 meals. Like there was only 4 of us, how does that even make sense? We start telling her what's wrong and she gives us the new total of $60 and expects me to swipe my card right away. I had to ask her for a refund on the previous swipe, since she hadn't even done that yet. No apologies or anything taken off for "accidentally" charging me triple the price. The walls behind the servers have menu items along w/menus on the counter you can order from. They have a bunch of cool memorabilia on the walls of items from a different era Like the old diners they advertise w/some of their specials. Today I ordered a good old standard breakfast of 2 eggs over easy, 2 sausage Pattie's, 2 pieces of bacon & 2 pancakes. The old 2-2-2-2 special for $8.88. Add in an order of extra crispy hash browns & you have a simple basic meal. This diner is open 24hr a day so if your in the area & have a hankerin fee sum vittles stop on in. I went for breakfast on a weekend morning and it was busy but not overly crowded, which was nice because it's a small place so you run the risk of not finding a seat. Finally, we got a receipt here, and at that point another server left because it seems others were getting their tickets ahead of ours. All I know is this service has gone from good, to bad, to worse. Maybe, a bit of over communication would help: the cook is the day cook and he is used to a different rhythm--let us know, there is some delay--tell us, you forgot the toast--apologize and, I don't know, provide some extra item or a discount for the exorbitant delay. I don't know who the manger is, but please make this the place it was before. Hopefully, people won't walk out if you service people right. I only have experience with carry-out here. My sister came last year after the 'The Other Art Fair' and we both did carryout here after the same show in May 2019. I was struck by the signs on the wall; there are so many you can read them all day! A few tvs were on as well behind the counter. I guess there is not much of a view, and after dark there's really nothing to see! The service was friendly and informative, esp when I asked for decaf coffee to go. We got the open faced turkey sandwich, salad, hash browns instead of mashed potatoes, and apple pie. The Styrofoam container was HUGE and big enough to share. The turkey did seem like a deli type rather than fresh sliced but it was fine, and the hash browns were great. Only thing I did not care for were the canned veggies on top, potatoes/carrots/peas. They remind me of the veggies you get in vegetable soup, mostly salt, no flavor or nutrition. The pie was good heated the next day. I'd go again if I'm in the area. It's got that kitchy dinner feel to it. They are also open 24/7. I like to get breakfast from here because well 24/7 breakfast is awesome! I like getting the Mexican chicken because I like all the peppers and grilled onions that come with the chicken. I sometimes order the pork chops because you get a good helping of those! I think you definitely are filled up well for what you pay. 10/5/24 My cousin and I both African-American women stopped by the Steak n' Egger diner on 1174 W. Cermak Rd. Chicago IL 60608 around 4pm ish in hopes of a turk burger we entered the diner the older Hispanic waitress said that can sit anywhere, my cousin polit asked the waitress "Do you guys serve turkey burgers here? The waitress said "yes we do" now the place was empty the only people there were the waitress, caucasian male cook and one gentleman sitting at the counter, so I know for a fact the waitress heard the question clearly, my cousin asked politely "Is it OK if I use the restroom? the waitress said "yes" |stayed in the front looking at the menu, I don't see turkey burgers so I asked the waitress "are the turkey burgers on a different menu? she said "no we just have turkey sausage and turkey bacon" I was a little perplexed, 10 seconds ago you said you guys serve turkey burgers but I kept that thought in my head, so I walked to the bathroom to tell my cousin they only have turkey sausage & turkey bacon here no turkey burgers so when my cousin came out the bathroom, she also looked at the menu and said "well let's just go somewhere else because we really want turkey burgers" so we politely thank the waitress for letting my cousin use the bathroom and we started to go out the front door. We have been coming here for years now when ever we can, but today was not it. First of all, 5 dollars for the smallest cup or horchata is a robbery. Second, the portions, especially in the early day or morning are terrible. More then half the bowl was empty, and the portions are never consistent. Finally, the employee taking care of us was using her BARE hands to grab the toast and handle all of our food. No sign of hygiene. I Didn't even let my girlfriend eat the toast after that.
