Slow, dirty, and they have went completely kiosk. No one will engage or even speak with you at the counter. There were employees in the back playing on their phones which was annoying when I was at the counter trying to get assistance. I tried to get ketchup for my kids hot dog and was interrogated. "what table are you at?" "What did you order?" Then an eye roll and she just threw 4 ketchups on the counter and walked off without any further comment. Not sure what I did, but damn. We found hair in our food at 10635 E US Hwy 36, Avon, Indiana 46234. They regularly don't wear hair nets and weren't tonight. We have seen them with no gloves and with masks down. Came and bought a Nutella Shake. The price is pretty extreme for a company that is on the verge of collapse costing $6. They only offer 1 size for their shakes and after a 10+ minute wait time they finally called my name. Upon receiving the shake my cup was only 3/4 full and the whipped topping didn't even reach the rim of the cup. I asked if I could get more since it's a pricey item, the employee gave me a dirty look and said that they don't control anything the machine does it all for them, turned around and walked away. Oh gosh I was so impressed by the service that our group got at this location during our most recent visit to Steak 'n Shake. I mean I love Steak 'n Shake as I adore the shakes but this place was the most efficient EVER at making our shakes (we ordered 4 child sized shakes of various flavours) and one person in my group, who had never been to the USA before, let alone to Steak 'n Shake asked for extra maraschino cherries. Well, he got what he requested: a full cup of extra cherries FREE! We totally enjoyed this and loved our shakes. Mine (the chocolate covered strawberry flavour) was one of the best I've ever had. This location was super clean when we visited, and it wasn't terribly busy (but wasn't empty either). There was ample parking, and we had no issues picking up our order! Entered the establishment and instantly had a dirty feeling. The counters were sticky and the screen on the kiosk was gross. Tables were almost all dirty, and looked like they hadn't been wiped from cup marks/spills in days. The food came out fairly quick, and all correct. Although I asked for ketchup and got a snarky look, followed by, "You can only have 2." I didn't think it mattered. I just wanted one anyways. When another customer was having an issue with the kiosk, an employee snatched the card from her hand and swiped it herself, and when it wasn't working she shrugged, apologized cockily, and walked away. The workers were very unfriendly and did not seem to have any regard for customers. Many weren't even wearing gloves while handling food. I normally love Steak and Shake. Not this one. They missed part of my order...they didn't charge me, but I didn't get it, so I went inside to get my fries. It took fifteen minutes to be acknowledged, after which they went to the people who got in line most recently. I pointed that out, and they said they'd get to me in a minute. When I think of Steak N' Shake in other areas of the Midwest, I think of good food and adequate service. I had heard about some bad experiences at Steak N' Shakes in Indy and in particular this local place but my wife and I decided to stop in for a meal late one evening after doing some shopping. A wrinkled sign on the door said, "Minimum 20 minute wait". My gut instinct was to simply turn around and walk out but we didn't because I believe in giving places a chance. One of the staff tells us that there is a long wait (even though the dining area is nearly empty) so we asked if we could sit at the counter and order and we are told we could. So we sit down and a minute or two later a manager approaches us and says that he doesn't have ANY service staff so anything we order would need to be take out. So we agreed to just order take out. As we were sitting there ordering and waiting for our food we noticed the disrespectful and employees who appeared like they wanted to chat rather than work, a manager who simply didn't care, and an employee who would rather argue with a customer rather than work. This is BY FAR THE WORST Steak N' Shake experience I have had and I would highly recommend that you avoid the Avon, IN location at ALL COSTS. read more

It was my first time trying out Steak N' Shake during my trip to Indiana last week. Went around 10pm on a Thursday, party of 5. We all ordered a burger each. I got the White Truffle Prime Steak burger. It definitely enjoyed it. It had a good amount of both onions and mushrooms. Besides that I HAD to dry one of their milk shakes. Great tip for future/current customers - Download the Steak N' Shake app and set up a new account. You'll automatically get a $2.99 off coupon. I did this sitting at the table inside the restaurant and ordered a Kit Kat milk shake and asked our waitress to bring to the table when it was made. My .98 cent milk shake was delicious! We have been here several times and not had this kind of day. Today, they were struggling. Today the bathrooms needed a lot of help. There were paper towels on the floor even outside the bathrooms. I know patrons can be messy and it isn't Steak and Shakes fault. The neon sign above us was heavily dusty. We ordered grilled chicken salad and it took about 35 minutes to get and had to remind them that we also had fries. A lot of the lettuce was brown and the bottom of the bowl had a lot of water. While it was quite busy he was sat 3 times in a row right after we were sat.
