I ordered a double garlic steak burger and a double steak burger with everything on it for carry out. There was a wait, but that was expected. I got to see them grill my burgers from the swivel chairs by the check out. The food quality was great for $4.00 meals. My only real complaint was the fry cups not being full and the wait. I don't understand the concept of fry cups anyway. Why not boxes? That way they don't spill or anything. Will be back. I haven't dared to go beyond their burgers. Although the taco salad is $4.00 too, and I might give that a go. Their shakes are generally superb, but I suggest always getting a to go cup (just my preference). Am I really going to write a review about Steak and Shake? And what got into me that I should even find myself eating in one?? Ok, so my experience was so bad and so laughable that I cannot resist. I actually thought I was on a John Quiñones episode of "What would you do?" Family road trip on the way back to Chi. It's about eating time for my wife and daughter, and it's definitely nursing time for newborn son. We HAD to pull over. And S&S was our best option. Not good. Sunday afternoon. Not very busy and plenty of staff. Someone comes in ahead of me to order takeout. Guy takes her order and starts working on it. I wait about 10 minutes and he finally looks up from the grill at me and asks, "have you been helped?" No, You're the only guy near the register! So he takes my order - just three simple burgers. I still have to drive 160 miles - can't risk it. A few minutes later, he comes back with the previous customer's food, but she's missing her shakes. He shouts out to the back. Confusion! He starts ranting and talking crap about his colleagues. She didn't get her shakes for another 15 minutes. Meanwhile, i'm still waiting and just observing the dysfunction of the staff frantically trying to get orders right. Then a woman from the drive thru comes in complaining that they messed up her order. "I ordered a triple cheeseburger, not three cheeseburgers," she says. I lean over and say to her, "those are probably mine." She is so mad she doesn't even hear me. The manager comes over and takes her wrong order (aka, my order) and tosses it. Doh! And then she starts reaming her staff. Eventually, I got my burgers. And before I left I quickly stopped in the restroom. As I was walking in, one of the servers was walking out after cleaning the bathroom. And as she opens the door, she's taking one last check of her bangs in the mirror while aimlessly spraying her cleaning bottle in front of herself....All over my pants. Y husband and I went to eat at this Avon steak and shake Sunday. Only one girl was working the floor trying to do everything. The manager would help when she could but it was a mess. People waited a long time to be seated, place was a mess, and we seen our food and others just sitting in the window getting cold. One person cannot do it all. When my husband paid he mentioned the long wait and the Mgr never said sorry. She claimed she was by herself. I know it's hard to get help but the mgr did not need to be so rude and ugly. After waiting for like ever to be seated, then to be treated like we had the plague, I hope to God that I never ever have to visit this place again. And then, as we were sitting there eating our food I look up to see one of the waitresses take a towel from another waitress to clean a table. My last few experiences have been absolutely terrible. The first time my boyfriend and his best friend went to pick up some food and waited in line for an hour. Finally get their food and there was no apology and they didn't offer any free food. On top of that, they got the order completely wrong. There was only 1 or two other cars in front on a late night on a Saturday, so i dont know why it took so long to make the food. Then just recently, we decided to try again and only wanted a few milkshakes. Waited in line for 20-30 mins. Finally got to the window to place an order and no one answered. Not one response from anyone for another 5-10 mins. So we drove off and left. Will never go back to this Steak n Shake. Don't waste your time. read more

We got to this steak 'n shake at about 11:20 on a Friday and waited about 20 minutes to be acknowledged. Not a single server would look us in the eye. Tables that came in after us were being served first. It was just my boyfriend and I, so it's not like we were going to be a hard table. I used to work at Steak 'n shake and our table was seated in plain sight of the server station, but the servers just kept walking past us and were clearly not going to take our order. We were one of two tables on the side closest to the kitchen, so they knew we were there. We started to get upset, until the cook, Darrell, walked up and asked us if we had been helped. We told him that we hadn't been helped and asked for a manager. He instead asked us for our order and went ahead and got our drinks and started our food immediately. It took him about 7 minutes to get everything out to us and it wasn't even his job. The manager knew the cook was taking care of us, which really concerned me because why wouldn't he make his servers take the tables when THAT IS THEIR JOB. At the steak 'n shake i worked at before that would NEVER be allowed. I truly hope Darrell gets a raise for going above and beyond and serving us, when that is clearly not his job. We will only be returning to this location if Darrell is going to be there so that he may give us exceptional service. read more

Just went through the drive up at Steak n Shake here in Avon. I don't eat a lot of fast food anymore but felt like splurging. It was 17 minutes after I ordered until I received my food and that includes waiting 3 minutes after paying. Ok great I was expecting fresh hot fries. But no - I got barely warm fries that tasted like onion rings. The bacon cheeseburger with everything is good. Not worth the wait though. I won't be going back. read more

We were on our way home from the Indian's game, awesome game by the way. It was close to midnight and like in most places you always think of Steak and Shake. When we arrived, there was about 25 people in the restaurant. A man who appeared to be a manager was at the cash register with 2 employees around him assisting him with carry out orders. There were several staff members walking around but no one came over to assist us. We stood there for at least 5 mins and was about to leave when a staff member brought a shake out for a customer and finally noticed us and came over to seat us. He said he will look for a table and the reason he was looking was because most tables hadn't been cleaned yet and he found one in the back and put the menu's on it and looked over at us and pointed to the table for us to sit. We sat down and a staff member came over immediately to take our drink order and we were ready with our food order too. She took it and brought our drinks to us shortly after. About 5 mins later a refill showed up. (Cool) Tables were being cleaned off and additional customers were arriving. 25 mins later NO FOOD!! everyone around us was getting their food but not us. When someone did arrive with some food, it was the wrong order and we responded as nice as possible that our food had not arrived for at least 25 mins and he responded with, I will look into it. That order was for the customers that just sat down 10 mins ago. After an additional 10 mins, 35 mins total, still no food and no one came over and said one word. We stopped to pay for our drinks and complained to the cashier and she said that's ok and she said not to pay. As we sat there we noticed that the staff members looked like they didn't want to be there and no one smiled. On our way out about 20 people were on their way in. I feel sorry for them. What has happen to their quality control, loved the chilli and double hamburger until now. I tried their new Prime hamburger and a cup of chilli: both terrible. Besides being extremely dry it had enough lettuce one could build a nice salad. Not exaggerating the lettuce was almost 2 inches high. The chilli was really a cup of beans. I sent it back and in its place I received a bowl of watered down tasteless greasy soup. I might add I experienced the problem with the chill the last time I visited this store. Talk about humor, read my review about the location at Holt and Washington, the idiot franchisee, terrible management and service. That location and 38th street had been open decades before stupid bought in. The franchisee, regional manager, and GM, should continue to stick their heads in the sand, and not reply to all these reviews, not answer the restaurant phone, and just close another location. Literally everyone working looked directly at me and my sister and fiance and completely ignored us. They didn't even say hi. Eventually after about 10 awkward minutes of waiting when it wasn't busy someone came over and said "just sit there" and didn't even give us menus. Where to even begin? This was probably one of the most terrible experiences that I've had at Steak 'n Shake. Though I'm not surprised at the lousy customer service that I usually get when ordering with Steak 'n Shake, tonight's experience was unacceptable. The customer service that I received tonight was not even subpar. When I got up to the window where the problems began. The person who walked up to the window was laughing at something, opened the window, said: "$4.35" (that's all). I handed him the money, where he then just handed me back a dollar. There was no greeting, no rereading back the order, anything. When I said thank you, he shut the window in my face. We didn't even get a receipt after asking for one. We waited at the window for 3 minutes, before they told us to pull into the first spot where our food would be brought out to us. Once in the parking spot, we waited for around 10 minutes before the food was finally brought out. The person that brought us our food, literally SHOVED the bag through the window and didn't say ANYTHING. It was probably only watching us look at the bag before he asked what we ordered. Seriously? You're going to hand us the food AND THEN ask what we ordered? Where's the login in that? After we confirmed our order, he proceeded to turn to the car right next to us, while our window was still down, and literally sucked up to them. He said "Hi guys! Here's your food...I hope you have a great night! Oh and please don't forget to take our survey and check out our social media page. Do you need anything else? No? Have a good one!" Were we not worthy of a simple greeting, conversation, or smile? It's not over... we then proceeded to CALL the inside of the restaurant and asked to speak with the manager. It took asking twice before one came on the phone. When we explained to her the issue, and how we felt very much disrespected, she didn't seem sympathetic at all -- very uncaring, or at least preoccupied. I think this experience was just what was needed in order to solidify my decision to stop my family and me from coming back to this location. On Friday, September 18, 2015 I went the drive thru to order breakfast at 9:45am. I waited two minutes before anyone even acknowledged I was at the drive thru. I was told to, "Hold on a minute." I waited two more minutes for someone to finally take my order. I ordered a breakfast bowl and a large iced tea. I pulled around to find one other car ahead of me. After waiting 10 minutes (still behind the first car) I left. Yesterday evening Wednesday, September 23, 2015, my friend and I went there for dinner. The dining room was dirty. The floor was so awful, sticky and slippery. There were hand prints all over the paritions. The service was very slow. The restroom was a mess. The whole place and the staff need to be spruced up. Do not eat at the Avon Steak n Shake. Poor service. Waited 5 minutes to be seated. Waited 35 minutes for our food to come to table. Never was offered a refill on drinks. Was about to leave. Had to go to counter to find out when our food was coming out. Our first sign that we should of turned around and walked back out was that about 10 tables needed to be cleaned. In the entire hour we were there only 2 of those tables got cleaned. We watched numerous people wait to be seated and then walk back out because no one helped them. Me and my family just ate at the Avon steak and shake. We ordered and we're ready for a good visit. Well, we were wrong! It took another server 25 minutes to get us WATER! That is unacceptable!!! Why 25 minutes? That is stupid! Next, my mom wanted her burger crispy, and it wasn't, of course! But wait there's more! They took it back and it sat in the window for 1 hour! Why? That is also unacceptable!!! Then it took 25 minutes for the manager to come to our table. And our waitress tried to look good in front of the manager by brining our shakes an hour and 10 minutes later. Why, again why? And we got two dirty spoons and no plate under my dad's chili. We have gone to Steak and Shake, Avon, IN about midnight three different times with another couple. Twice we had to wait over 15 minutes to get seated and have our presence acknowledged by any of the workers. The last time was 3 weeks ago and about 15 people were waiting to get seated. Less than half the tables were occupied and everyone was being ignored. We finally left and went to Sonic to get a shake (much better & thicker than Steak and Shake). We were immediately waited on with a smile at Sonic. Bottom line; we're done with Steak and Shake in AVON, Indiana -at least the night shift. They better reorganize and get some employees on the night shift who show a little motivation and don't look annoyed when customers show up. read more

Terrible. Stood in the doorway with 3 other families for 10 minutes to be told that they're closing the dining room because they were understaffed. There were maybe 6 tables with people at them in the dining room, an the rest were left filthy! Seems the 3 waitresses they had couldn't handle serving some tables and maintaining the dining room! I used to be a Service Trainer at a Steak N Shake that's atleast twice as busy as this location, and we were able to manage. My managers would NEVER allow us to turn away business. Just left Steak n Shake after waiting 20 minutes in drive thru. They weren't even that busy. Called and talked to the manager. He said i chose to go thru drive thru and I was wasting his time by calling him to let him know of my dissatisfaction of waiting so long and burning up gas. Really?!? At least he was getting paid. Like he wasn't wasting my time by his slow service! 2 employees were just sitting on the ground puffing on cigarettes blowing smoke in my car. This place is run like a zoo.
