This little micromanager, called my father "stupid as f***" , word by word, because they failed to make the order properly according to the website. we ordered 4 different burgers online, 4 of them came incorrect. Plain, nothing on them. we made no edits to anything we ordered, we didn't ask for any items to be removed but all items came with missing ingredients. I called and them and they told me that's how i ordered it, i looked at my receipt and no that was not how i ordered it. so we come in and nicely ask for our food to be made properly and explain what we ordered, showing them the receipt on the bag. the manager tries to tell us the western bbq burger doesn't come with the fried onions or barbecue unless you ask for it. hm, weird. because if i wanted a single stack burger i'd order that right? whatever, after a little bit of bickering he decided he will remake that burger but nothing else. my father tries his best to diffuse the situation as we approached them as nicely as we could to solve the problem (we work in food service too we get it) so he's trying to explain that maybe this is a misunderstanding from both employees side and customers side. Explaining that maybe this was something they need to take to their superiors to fix the website because what was advertised ingredient wise in the picture and caption is not what we got. We were missing bacon and sauces and key ingredients to our burgers. we received bread and meat. nothing else. the crew members decide to step in to argue and interrupt while we're explaining what happened, and call us names, saying we're wrong. The big lady with the hairnet told her manager "they have to take it up with doordash anyways" and the manager was telling it to go away because he can handle it... We did not order through doordash! Wrong order! Let your manager handle it. As the manager was talking to my dad, this girl steps in, reading the wrong receipt and proceeds to tell me that that's how my burger came. pointing to the receipt "that's how you ordered it" arguing with us... i have no idea who's order she was reading but it literally was not ours. and the name on the top was different. "that's not my order" i say "oh..." Wrong order! Just let your manager handle it next time... stop interrupting if you don't know how to solve that problem. You don't even know what's going on! That girl was ready to fight yet so clueless but looking for a reason to argue! she then proceeds to scoff and walk away saying "yall stupid as f***" i'm pretty sure she was just high. Poor poor attitude. Must be her first job or something but i've never seen somebody keep their job very long acting like that. manager was also rude to us from the start and refused to make the order over again until my father explained from his own personal work experience and working in the industry from mcdonald's to fine dining, that he's been in his shoes too. And after explaining about 8 solid times we just want our food how we ordered it on the app, he decided to remake the order. he did not want to help us at all at the start and they went 0-100 raising voices at us when we were SO nice about what happened. took 30 minutes to get out of there the second time after spending 30 minutes waiting for the food the first time. super unprofessional staff. however i gained a little respect for the manager after he finally decided to hear us out after 20 minutes and finally remake our food the way it's written on the menu. however you shouldn't have somebody with that poor of an attitude working the front, some customer service training is needed and maybe wearing press on nails + touching your hair aren't the smartest things to do when you're working with food. Touching dirty hair can easily get it caught underneath the nails. or weaken the nails to where they pop off in food! yuck! her poor attitude is written all over her body language as well. this employee belongs in the back of house not the front. I absolutely love this Steak 'N Shake. I have never had a problem with my order, and the staff is THE GREATEST. Everyone working the day shift seems pretty friendly, but I usually come LATE NIGHT. The Hispanic guy (who has worked there awhile now-might be the manager...unsure) working late night is one the coolest people. He's very attentive and very personable. The food is good for a Steak 'N Shake. You get what you pay for, and then some. I see alot of bad reviews here about 1 experience, but we've been coming here once a week for maybe a year. I'd like to give this place a 5 star but honestly it's only a 5 star on certain days/times. We like coming here and getting in and out quickly. Our favorite server is Veronica. Verconia is quick get your order, get orders going, and get your food when its ready. She is efficent. Every now and then, Mary is our server, she is very friendly and also efficient at her job. If we come here and it's not on a Saturday morning.. Its a very different experience. One time on a weekday, shortly after lunch. Service was slow. We almost left after waiting awhile to be seated then waiting a long while to be even be serviced. It's not all bad though, there are a few notable servers that we have been served more than one occasion. Their names I don't know, but would recognize their faces. We've also been served by servers who show a lack of prioritizing the customer care and general tasks, or failing to multitask easy tasks. Meaning.... I've watched people stand at the door for awhile, watched people leave, watched our food get cold in the window, watched as other people sit and not be serviced for long period of time. Also, there is one server... that if we see them while were walking in, we're like...‍ooh no. I hit this Steak n' Shake when I'm on one of my sin runs (booze and smokes, but you can add groceries to that list with the new and improved Cook County Taxes) out to Elgin. If I wasn't such a sucker for Steak n' Shake, it's unlikely that I would have come here more than once, however, as it's one of the most inconsistent locations I've been too. It's very clean, as all SNS stores are, and the friendly staff is very quick to greet and seat you. Food comes quickly and is reasonably priced. My problem with this SNS is that a) the staff is badly trained, and b) the food is hit and miss. Recently, I was here and I asked for the exact same thing I've been ordering for over 20 years - a single Steakburger Platter with chili, fries, a side of cheese sauce, and a coke. They've recently changed the language from "platter" to something like "meal," and the waitress was incapable of taking my order until I used the new corporate verbiage. Then she asked me if I wanted a single or a double or a triple, with or without cheese, over and over as she kept forgetting the answers. I'm not asking for miracles here and I realize that this is not an upscale restaurant, but still - I've been placing this very same order for years and have never had any trouble at all getting it placed correctly on the first try. This is not an isolated incident, I feel as if I need to write my order out myself each time I sit down as I have gotten the wrong food here on several occasions. The food is a bit inconsistent too - fries tend to be soggy, chili has an odd texture, cheese sauce is often served cold, burgers aren't smashed enough on the grill so they are a funny size and lack the crisp edges a SNS burger usually has, cokes are watery, etc. When they get it right, it's as good as SNS always is, but they really do have trouble hitting the mark on a regular basis here. Dying for SNS and in the neighborhood? Sure, go right ahead, the staff may be hapless, but they are very friendly. Have some time on your hands? I have no clue why the reviews for this location are so low! This is a step up from most Steak N Shake locations. Atmosphere: It is Steak N Shake! They literally all look the same. The consistency is actually quite impressive when it comes to theme. It is a mix of 1950's Diner and an 1950's Ice Cream Shop. Steak N Shakes are usually comfortable to chill out long into the night. This chain is popular with the nocturnal college kids. This location has been consistently clean all four times I have been here. Food: Not really a fan of Steak N Shake food to be completely honest. But my food came out Fresh. Some locations have overly greasy burgers or oily fries, but not this one. Now Milkshakes at Steak N Shake are pretty consistent. They are either kinda Flat or Just Right. This location tends to make them the perfect thickness and does well blending flavors. Service: I have consistently gotten fast and friendly service at this location. My favorite server is a Burly man by the name of Lavonte. He has made us laugh out loud on multiple occasions and works really hard when he has to serve multiple tables. It is a real pleasure when we drop by his night shifts. I wholeheartedly disagree with all of the One and Two Star reviews for this location. When I sat down for lunch here today, I realized that I had not been to a Steak n' Shake for about 2 years.I could eat a few of their Frisco Burgers and some three way chili but after that it's just so-so. Service was bad. She was a nice enough girl but it took forever to take our order, longer to get it and even lonnnnnnnger to get our check.Tried waving her down for a good 10 minutes after we were done. Finally had to call over a different server who told our server that we were waiting for our bill. She still couldn't bring it to us so she had someone else do it. Strange. I told the manager this and she took off one of our drinks (2.99). I told her that it wasn't necessary, just trying to drive the point home that she needs to better train the waitstaff (at least this one girl). I'm starting to think that Steak N Shake is starting to slip down hill some. There was a time when the service at "all" their locations was really good and the quality of the food was also good. The service here is not as bad as the one in Gurnee, but not too far off in providing substandard service. It's not like the menu here is extensive or difficult, just simple, greasy, comfort foods. Seems like the service & staff at the location just goes downhill every year. I went in for a carry out order that I placed at the register. My order was a steakburger meal which comes with fries and a drink. I ordered grilled onion, mustard, lettuce & pickle on my burger, I ordered the unstweened ice tea. I do not live that far from here, by the time I came home my fries were ice cold and my burger was not that warm either. I had to microwave my fries and they are really skinny fries so they all stuck together, I had to microwave my burger as well, which my made the bun really soggy. This location is directly across the street from both a Burger King & A McDonald's, I have ordered food from both of those locations thru the drive-thru and the distance is the same and my food is never ice cold when I bring it home. This makes me think that the food was not that hot when it was given to me at the restaurant. I went to wash my hands and the bathroom was so nasty that I just walked out of there and took my business partner across the street to iHop. The manager comes outside with the wrong order in the rain and asks what is wrong with the order. It was wrong and I asked the girl to remake it. Just finished up with our visit and will not be back anytime soon as my boyfriend and I were extremely disappointed with our experience. The staff were too busy arguing (loud enough that I could hear them across the restaurant!) and talking amongst themselves to provide any service to us or any of the other customers. Our food was cold, our milkshakes were completely melted, and we were missing parts of our orders. Our waiter did not give us straws, napkins, or silverware until we asked for it and she acted like us asking for these things was making her go out of her way. She also never came to check on us after bringing our food and never asked if there was anything else we needed. This is now my second terrible experience at this Steak N Shake. Read on for the explanations as to why. The first time was a few weeks ago when I came with my parents on a Sunday afternoon. I had ordered the Parmesan N Herb fries and when I got my meal I had regular fries. When I mentioned it and they took them back they literally just threw some of the seasoning on and brought it back. Meaning a portion of my fries were smothered in the seasoning and the rest had zero seasoning on it. Oh, did I mention they were cold too? Now, a few weeks have passed, it's 10pm, I'm driving home and I haven't had dinner. I decided to go through the drive thru. I ordered a #16 (Chicken Fingers) with the Parmesan N Herb fries and a regular sweet tea. I got to the window, was handed a drink and asked if I could pull forward to wait for my meal. I did, and when I tasted my drink it was unsweet tea (by the way-my receipt said sweet tea so I know they heard me correctly). There were no cars behind me, so I backed up to the window and once I finally got someone's attention, told them it was wrong. They took it and I waited about 5 more minutes while they "fixed" my drink and handed it to me with my food. Well, as soon as I got my drink, I tasted it and it was terrible! Did you know that sugar granules don't dissolve in cold drinks? They had literally taken the unsweet tea and thrown a bunch of sugar packets in it. I got a mouthful of sugar when I took my first sip. It was disgusting. I pulled into a parking spot, went inside, and literally asked if they just threw sugar in unsweet tea. I said I would take something else if they didn't have sweet tea ready. Without answering me, they took my tea and while "fixing it" the staff giggled and continuously looked at me (we all know when someone is talking about us). Did I mention the manager was standing right there and did NOTHING when he saw that I was obviously a upset, dissatisfied customer? When I got it back it, they had obviously put some simple syrup in it or something and put WAY too much. It was like drinking pure sugar. I was so pissed off I just left. I knew if I went back in I would have caused a scene because I would have gone off on them. I couldn't drink any more of the drink and just threw it away when I got home. I don't live far enough away for my food to get cold on the drive, so I expected my food to still be warm when I got home. Well, I get home and my fries are cold as if they have been sitting out on a counter for 4 hours. At that point I called the store, asked to speak to the manager, and complained about my service. He took my name and told me they would cover a regular shake, a large drink of my choice and a large fry with the seasoning upgrade on them. I honestly wish I could say that redeemed them but after that all that I really just wanted my money back. I will give the upgrades to my friends and family when they are with me because I don't ever want to give that place my money again. Honestly, the WORST customer service. Tell me why they promote "24 hours open" online AND on their windows OUTSIDE OF THEIR STORE, but close the store down at 10:30 pm or maybe even sooner?? (Stating just ONE of the THREE incidents) I was waiting at the drive-thru for 15 mins with 2 cars in front of me and 1 car behind me on a Wednesday night at 10:30 pm. NO ONE was getting service. So I took it upon myself to see that maybe they meant dining inside was open. It was 10:45 pm as I tried to open the doors, but they were locked, the chairs inside were up on tables, and it looked like the staff just ended their cleaning. So irritating. read more

It's a Steak 'N Shake...so you think, why not? HAHAHA...that was your first mistake. Your second was actually walking in the door. Being a chain restaurant, I don't expect much....but I do expect the waitresses to actually care about their job. We went on a weekend and were seated right away....at a table that was dirty. Of course by this time, the girl who sat us was gone and along with everyone else. So I ended up having to clean the table off. Eventually the girl who sat us came back and said she was our waitress. She took our order and came back with the non shake drinks right away. The shake didn't show up until AFTER our meal was served and only when it was asked about. There were 3 waitresses working that day and only 1 was attentive to her tables. Our waitress and another one just seemed so laizze-faire about everything. We sat for an extra 15 minutes AFTER we were done with our food to get our check because no waitress to be seen. People who came in after us, and were served by the 1 waitress who did her job, left before we even got our check. And we're not slow eaters. Food wise....eh...it was fine. Nothing super special.
