First visit to a Steak 'n Shake since Covid as the one near us closed and never reopened. I remember that I love their fries, thought their shakes weren't bad, but they were overpriced. I was surprised to find that they have no counter service at all, only kiosk, and app to place your order. Their prices definitely have not come down, and in my opinion, are high for what you get. The atmosphere was clean, bright and well-maintained. Our burgers tasted good however $.90 up charge for fried onions, particularly when they are very few, is a bit ridiculous! The french fries were so undercooked, I'm not sure they were actually fried (ask if I could get them more crispy and the answer was no). There are milkshake, exactly that... I ice milk, not ice cream... highly disappointed! Overall, very disappointing! Not likely to return! Felt like they were actually more like 2 1/2 stars, but felt two stars was unfair. On a footnote, their app is also very clugy... it shows the burger, and the items that you add to build the burger, however, when you tap on them, it puts a red box around them. A red box when you ordered it, how does that make me sense! Additionally, I spent over 20 minutes, attempting to reset my password. Listen, steak n shake is pretty high up in my burger list for fast food. I would rank this right behind in n out. The burger is extremely affordable and the garlic burger may be a little too salty but man just a classic cheeseburger is so fire. I also love their string French fries. I've eaten at steak n shake twice and I love it. I don't know why you wouldn't go here instead of whataburger. read more

Show up @ 11:40pm get told a lie that the French fry machine is broken. Which was a clear lie. After investigation they were trying to close early. Which the operation hours are 10am-12am. Horrible customer service. POS didn't want to tell the truth. read more

Traveled from California to review Steak & Shake for my podcast, as they're going to be in my annual Septemburger tournament later this year. My first impressions of the place were that the outside didn't match the inside. It has a fancy signature on the sign making it seem like it'd be an upscale kitchen, but it's not. It's a fast food burger joint. A decent one at that though. You walk in to find kiosks to order with, and the place felt pretty clean. Not too crowded. The customers I did see almost all got confused by the soda fountain, because you have to scan a QR code to activate it? And the scanner wasn't directly next to the dispenser, but over by the ketchup pump. Either way, seems like overkill but I guess soda theft be causing these businesses to drop like flies. The staff were all nice enough, but with the removal of a face-to-face ordering interaction, there's not much to talk about here. There was an odd moment where we ordered our shakes with cherries on top, and they arrived without cherries. We didn't say anything but a minute later, a guy from the back came out with our cherries and told us that most people don't like cherries, so they assumed we didn't want them. Mostly I just found it funny, as the problem was fixed quickly and without us asking. Still worth noting. The food was a mixed bag. The burgers were all pretty decent. My dad and I split a garlic burger, a western BBQ & bacon burger, and a standard steakburger. The garlic one rules if you enjoy garlic. A little salty but overall I'd go 6.5-7/10 on the burgers across the board. The fries were really good warm, but make sure you add their special seasoning salt. I had to ask for it as it wasn't kept out in the opening. The onion rings tasted like freezer burn. The milkshake didn't taste the freshest (but not as bad as some of the other reviews had me prepared for). The chicken tenders impressed me though. Overall, I'm neutral on the atmosphere, positive on the service, and neutral-to-positive on the food. Pretty close to perfect mediocrity, but slightly higher. PLEASE DONT GO HERE. My food was cold, hard, & slightly smelly. I don't know what the hell is up with this place. This was my FIRST time here and it was atrocious. The service was god awful too. Just cause you hate your job doesn't mean you have to be rude. The restaurant is sticky too if that makes sense. The floors has spills, tables had crumbs, and it smells like ass in there. read more

I have had a love hate relationship with Steak and Shake for 20 years. Love their food, hate their service. Many locations shut down over the past few years, which is sad, but justifiable bc of their poor service (every location across the US). I work close to this one and noticed today that it was open. I was very happy yet nervous about how the drive thru of all things would be. I didn't wait long and recieved my food as ordered correctly. It was fresh and delicious. First time at Steak n' Shake, while on vacation. As soon as me and my family got in and placed our order, the card kept declining even though it was still good. Turns out, the machine was broken, so we had to use another one. There was trash on the seats, but overall a decently clean inside and outside. The shakes were good, and the chicken tenders were AWESOME! Though, it was kind of expensive. We didnt have much experience with the staff, but the one guy that gave us our food was kind and tried to help with the whole credit card thing. Overall, I would recommend coming here if you want some tenders and shakes! read more

One of the chains I always read about, but can never try since I live mostly in CA. Today was the day. We wanted just snack on the way back from the airport. I quickly googled what is the thing you need to try here "Butter- burger" says Mr Googs, so we went with a double (glad we did - the patties are super thin) and a small onion rings. I gotta say the burger was delish! kinda like a slider taste if that makes sense, the bun was super fluffy and the patties were thin. YUM! - and on the receipt it says if you take the survey - you can get another butter burger. (win-win). The onion rings were fresh outta the fryer and better than standard fast food rings. My buddy and I are passing through here on a 7-Day road trip from New York to California and this was the only decent fast food that we managed to come across during that time. We ordered the garlic butter burger with a side of fries and it hit the spot in a way none of the other places had done so. These reviews need to be updated, I almost didn't go to this location because the reviews were saying the owner was mean and the Irving location was terrible, but I kept at it and came anyway. Mind you, I came alone at 11PM after watching Fireworks in Coppel. The only complaint I have from this place, was that Steak 'n Shake got rid of their garlic Parmesan fries, and replaced it with nacho cheese, but they still have the double garlic steak burger so that's a plus! The manager or owner was really nice, asked if I needed help at the Kiosk, brought my food directly to me, offered seasoning on my fries and opened the door since they were closing at midnight! The location in north Irving is terrible, for one reason. The guy at the window, who I think is the owner, is the rudest ass I've ever met at a fast food place. Been there maybe three times because it's near my house and we are over there a lot. The Frisco Melt (patty melt) is pretty good, if not overpriced. This the reason for the two stars. I couldn't remember what they called it, so I asked for a patty melt at the speaker. The jackass proceeded to argue with me that they didn't have patty melts. After about a minute of this, my eye found it on the menu and I said Frisco Melt. He grunted ok, and gave me attitude the rest of the time. Won't be back. I've been to several steak and shake's With great service in friendly people. With great service in friendly people This One And Irving needs a lot of direction the people atyitude here suck. After sitting 23 minutes in the drive-through a doc to speak to the guy on the speaker who seemed pretty pissed at the world. After pulling up to the window it was confirmed he was a very unhappy mean grouchy person and has no business working in hospitality or restaurants. Attitude was horrible food was lukewarm got my order incorrect but after waiting so long I was hungry so I ate what I got. The little guy was not wearing a name tag so I can not name him. Heavy accent and no smiles is how you will know him. What a huge let down. read more

I received a mailer with some coupons and the pictures of the burgers and shakes looked sooo good. I figured that for $2.99 it couldn't hurt to give it a try. I stopped by in the afternoon around 130 pm and went through the drive-thru. I ordered the double-cheese steakburger and fries. I made some special requests (hold the lettuce and tomatoes, add jalepenos). When i got to the window, I asked for ketchup and ranch. They gave me at least 5 packets which is nice since a lot of restaurants only want to give you 1 or 2 packets. They also didn't charge extra for the ranch. Moving on to the food. I will say for fast food it was pretty good quality. The french fries were hot, fresh, and crispy. They were pretty much gone before I even made it home!! Lol...I forgot to check my burger to make sure they made it correctly but surprisingly everything was perfect. The burger was moist, the cheese was melted, and the bread was toasted. They use long pickle slices which I can't say I loved but outside of that I enjoyed it. Looking forward to coming back and trying one of the milkshakes next. read more

I love this place because it's right down the road from work and the food is generally pretty good. I wouldn't write home about it but it's satisfying and their $5 lunches are always good for when you're on a budget! My only frustration is that you really don't get that much food. Now, I'm not asking for a giant plate of it but when I spend $5 and I'm hungry again 2.5 hours later, I start to question that even though it was a good deal, did it have any value?? Oh well. I've also experienced hot and cold customer service. Some days I go and get great service all around. Other times I go and I'm basically ignored both before I'm seated and then when I'm seated. It's because of the bipolar behavior of this location that it gets 3 stars. Some days it deserves 4, sometimes 2. The food here is yummy, and definitely not overpriced. Steak n' Shake was always a nice alternative to the countless other prevalent QSR burger chains. When I was feeling particularly grim or hedonistic, or both, I would often come here for their 7x7 combo, which sadly no longer exists. Eating one of those monstrosities was inadvisable, but I somehow felt very patriotic doing so. There is nothing more American than throwing caution to the wind and eating a gigantic stack of grease, cheese, and meat. Most remaining Steak 'n Shake locations were recently remodeled. The facelift revealed a much more streamlined order process, without waitstaff. I never understood the need for waitstaff here anyways, and counter service is good enough for me. The menu, while devoid of some of the more imaginative things, remains inexpensive. The fries are thin and crispy, as are the patties. There is something very familiar about the experience you get from eating here. The food is reminiscent of diner fare from a bygone era, not perfectly recreated, but given the cost it's certainly acceptable. While I think Shake Shack and In-n-out are somewhat superior, you won't find the extensive selection of signature burgers or distinctive fries there. I would recommend supporting this location as it's one of the few area stores in existence. Also sign up for their email club with an expendable email address, as they inundate your inbox with occasionally worthwhile coupons. read more

The remodel look is great. There isn't a long wait time like before either. I never understood what took the back of the house so long to bring food to the front of the house. That makes my little chunky self happy. I had the Garlic Burger with a Turtle Carmel Milkshake. The meat is seasoned very well. So big a big applause for that. Don't forget the milkshake, you will thank me later. Oh! Please use the fry seasoning as well. Why am I giving this place a 3. The chili! If I wanted to make my own chili from a can I would have went to the three to four grocery stores within a mile radius of the restaurant. Bring back the chili! At least have it as a seasonal option. It is a great place to get a cheap meal and it is way better than a Burger King or McDonald's option. read more

Went to Steak and Shake for the first time today after hearing about it for years. I was in a little bit of a hurry and I did not realize you could sit inside, so I wish I would've had more time. I walked inside and was taken back to the 1950s. Tons of red, white, and black colors decorated the walls, booths, and chairs. I walked directly up to the counter and I was asked a little rudely if I was eating in or taking away. I replied that I was taking out and he showed me a menu. I told him that it was my first time here and asked him what he would recommend. He told me everything was good, but most people like the guacamole and mushroom burger. My eyes went to the Portobello burger and I asked about this. He replied that it was okay and quickly took my order. For the fries they had two options of Cajun and parmesan garlic for an extra .29 cents, so I got the parmesan. I thought I was done until the man mentioned that their regular flavored shakes are half off--it was 3:45pm. So, I got the orange freeze. My total was only $7!! My shake came out first and I was pleasantly surprised by the size! It was around 12 ounces of orange heaven!! It waa super thick, so I took my time drinking it. The fries were small, but packed full of flavor. I am so glad that I got the parmesan garlic for an extra .29 cents! They were very yummy!! Now to my burger, not so good. I was expecting there to be some tomato, onion, or at least lettuce--there was none of that! Literally it was just two plain buns smashed together with flat meat, mushrooms, and onions in between. I was not impressed at all and the best thing about it, if I can even say that, was the garlic sauce. I am going to do my best to finish it as I hate wasting food, but if the location was not so far away from where I was I would return it. Being used to a horrible Steak 'n Shake near home it's not hard to be outstanding. This one knocked it out of the park though. The first time I came to this one we had gone to Applebee's to find it closed, sat at a not busy ihop with three waiters for an hour with never getting a refill and being forgotten. So we left $ for our drinks and walked out; which at least two other tables did as well; particularly after watching a party get food after 1 1/2+ hours and it be wrong. So we came here; waitress was awesome! Lots of refills, food was decent ... we ordered got food/refills, ate and were ready to pay in 45/50 minuets to the just getting drinks next door. Then we had amusing drunk guys come in from a lift/Uber ride after us which was a plus. We came again another time and it was great as well. Now this is our late after gig stop vs the two that failed us that faithful night! read more

It's been a while since I've had Steak n Shake, and I can say with confidence it's pretty underwhelming. The service was okay. The staff was friendly and accommodating, just the music in the restaurant was so loud that I had to repeat my order for them to hear it, and yet still had to go back to the counter to order again because they hadn't heard half my original order. I got the the Steak burger and it resembled that of something I would taste at a McDonalds for twice the price. My husband ordered the White Truffle Prime which comes with so much Aioli sauce that it looked more like a Bukakke Buger (Don't google it). Long story short, its meh. I'm sure this restaurant was amazing back in it's prime maybe 50 years ago with food that warranted naming your restaurant after it, but now it's just any otherfast food chain with thin burgers and mediocre milkshakes. I'm not mad at it, it just won't be my first choice when picking a restaurant. read more
